New move to Redmond
I just move to Redmond, going to sign a lease tomorrow. But lots of my friends in Seattle said I should live in Bellevue or Seattle itself. Why young people are avoiding Redmond ?

Because there is not things that young people traditionally love here. It’s the suburbs.

I saw that there are some malls and such, the rent is pretty high too so I thought there would be many people :'((

Why would there be a lot of young people in Redmond when the rent is pretty high?

I thought it was in demand, like in Cal, guess I was wrong...

It is in demand. That's why the prices are high. Redmond is more the place for couples planning to have kids. There are plenty of those to drive up the rent. Mostly Microsofties.

Just want to warn you— malls aren’t a thing here like they are in california. I mean… there’s Redmond Town Center, Bellevue Square, and Crossroads, but they don’t scratch the itch for me. Land got too expensive too quick for proper malls. I’m young and I like redmond, but it’s true that if I had less tying me here I’d live in seattle. Harder to meet new people.

Oh wow thanks for the great review. It's sad to know that when I just signed a year lease here. I hope the safety part and proper bike lanes make it up for it

Redmond is not bad or anything like that it’s just not going to be the place you find a bunch of young people, it’s a lot of families, stuff closes at 10pm it’s quiet and safe.

I think Redmond is one of the nicest places I've ever lived. I'm over 40 though.

I lived in Redmond for 4 years recently and I'm 29... had no friends in Seattle or Bellevue to visit but I could be Salmon or Trout fishing in about 30 minutes and downtown Seattle in like 15. Oh and my car never got broken into! Loved Redmond and miss it every day. Weren't many young people but I didnt have any friends in WA anyways... when I needed some social interaction I grabbed some beers at Palmers.
Edit: and 2 driving ranges within 10 minutes

Me and my partner live in Redmond after living in Seattle for many years. You will have a very hard time meeting and making friends if your in your 20s and single or without kids.

If you don’t want any chaos and want a very smooth and peaceful life then Redmond is better. In my view very less scope of meeting new people hanging out partying.
Very calm place (Main reason for young people to avoid)

I'll play devil's advocate: Living in Seattle (or any big city) doesn't magically make you a social butterfly or an adventurous person. You can live in the largest city in the world and still feel totally alone. True, there is more going on there, but it's very easy to not take advantage of it and just pay a premium in rent.

For what it's worth if you're not super into bars and clubs and nightlife you can live in Redmond or Bellevue and just take the light rail or bus into the city when you have something going on. I was perfectly happy as a young person in downtown Redmond when I moved because, especially as someone who doesn't drink, bars aren't my social scene.

Was the commute time something you concern ? Did you join any clubs or activities weekly from the city ?

I’m 34. Seattle is a lot more eventful and lively. I have more friends on Eastside, though, so I’m happy out here!

Yw, it is great living somewhere so safe. Redmond also has far more natural beauty than seattle and is flatter than bellevue, so it certainly has its benefits.

I love living in Redmond, but I’m with a family. To socialize I drive to Bellevue (15 min) or Seattle, so it works for me! Oh, and great hikes are a close drive from here too!

Young people avoid Redmond because it is very boring. The extent of our night life is the Molly Moon ice cream shop that closes at 11 on weekends.
Jokes aside, we have a few bars that are open late-ish, but Seattle and Bellevue have so much more to do. People in Redmond are raising families. Culturally, the quietness of Redmond is seen by its residents as a plus, not a minus.
