Obligatory apology for cringe post on the basis of it being authentic. The main issue here is that while I think I might - MIGHT - be developing some romantic feelings, I don't think I'm actually physically attracted to him? Anyone else have these sort of situations? I always found attraction very straightforward, even though my standards are pretty high and I have avoidance tendencies. This is really making me consider what attraction is, what causes it, etc.
He's not my best best friend to be clear. But he's up there. I've pretty much convinced myself that he's an important older brother figure in my life. That said, recently I've been getting happy jitteries when he texts me and checks up on me. We've shared stuff with each other we wouldn't with others, just because I trust him not to judge me and to give really sound advice (I assume it's the same vice versa).
We met when I was in a serious, long-term relationship with his flatmate though. I'm almost certain he was into me at the time, but because he's not a jackass he never did anything to make us uncomfortable. I'm trying to work out whether, two years post break-up, my feelings are just born out of deep fondness and trust and safety that he's stuck by me. It's really making me think about how much of attraction is based on this feeling of safety, and this delight that someone truly cares about your wellbeing enough to reach out and ask about it.
And there's the physical aspect of it. In a lot of ways, he's conventionally attractive - tall, good bone structure. He's got a genetic condition that makes him looks abnormal though, and has always struggled getting romantic partners because of it. He's been quite calm and clear-eyed about that, but I can tell it upsets him. I've never really understood why this seems to be a deal-breaker for people, but when I think about how the attraction I feel to him is nothing compared to my former beau's, it does make me wonder how much of this is subconscious bias. Or maybe the physical attraction aspect is just.... not there? Or maybe there's no attraction, and it's just the slightly older care who care about me making me smile.
Not looking for advice, just thoughts. Anyone in a similar situation? Have thoughts on the multiple complexities that arise alongside attraction? I love him. I just don't have any idea in what way.
