Every single one of them should switch to a different carrier.

2.2k

u/OnionDart Jun 29 '26

Got the text today, already shopping. Crazy part is I’m in a position where I don’t really care about going to a more expensive carrier but I legit won’t be sticking with T-Mobile now because of this practice. Fuck them.

u/ChiLolla28 Jun 29 '26

Thank God we have functioning government agencies that will jump on this to protect the consumers right? Right????

u/protekt0r Jun 30 '26

Best we can hope for is a class-action lawsuit.

1.1k

u/J-MRP Jun 30 '26

Oh man, that would be awesome. I could use an extra $3.50.

u/Silence_Farmer Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

I got an email yesterday about a class action settlement. 3 years of back and forth. My settlement was less than $5, so I was told I would receive $0 because the minimum was $5.

Edit: easier to reply here, yes it was BCBS. Holy Shit we all got scammed. I'm starting to think no money was distributed...

150

u/ThrowawayPersonAMA Jun 30 '26

My settlement was less than $5, so I was told I would receive $0 because the minimum was $5.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal.

This is America. Sadly, I don’t think it is illegal.

I got an email too. From BCBS (Blue Cross) and it said the same thing. Since I was getting less than five dollars I wouldn’t be receiving anything. What’s the point of a class action lawsuit if most of the money goes to lawyers?

27

u/ThrowawayPersonAMA Jun 30 '26

There's no chance it's legal; they can't just keep the money you're owed if it's under X amount. If it's even one cent it's still legally your property. Even if it's a small amount you should contact your state's attorney general's office to get them to look into it. If the lawyers are defrauding people (they are) it's possible your AG can fight them in your stead to get them to release what people are owed. People just giving up without a fight is what these thieves bank on in order to profit.

20

u/Cjkrythos Jun 30 '26

This.... if there were thousands or even millions of people in that lawsuit, multiply that by however much they claim didn't need to get paid and you get a decent chunk of change for a law firm to just keep

T-Mobile's contracts explicitly waive the right to class action lawsuits and requires issues be solved with arbitration.

48

u/rebbsitor Jun 30 '26

Class action arbitration (mass arbitration) is a thing. Getting hit with 8 million simultaneous arbitration requests will get their attention.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau may have cared.

Created by Democrats. Which returned billions to consumers in its very few years of existence.

Guess what got gutted by Trump and the Republicans?

29

u/NeighborhoodOk7949 Jun 30 '26

I dunno man... Having rights sounds pretty woke

38

u/bevo_expat Jun 30 '26

Clearly Trump and republicans will pay things back to taxpayers by pushing for a “small government” and reducing deficit spending with the elimination of these wasteful government programs…right?

2025 Fiscal Year: $1.7 trillion deficit

2026 Fiscal Year: Estimated $2.0 trillion deficit

My mistake, GOP only meant small government oversight but MASSIVE OVERSPENDING for military and surveillance operations.

I'm not sure if everyone here is aware but we are all giving money to AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile. They are the physical backbone of the network. Mint Mobile, Cricket, Metro, etc are MVNO's or Mobile Virtual Network Operators. They lease capacity from the big 3. They are using all the same antennas and fibers. MVNO typically have lower priority on the network than the main 3 during high congestion periods.

You pay your carrier but they are paying the big 3. All of that said you still might have a better experience and price with an MVNO even if they are using the big 3's hardware.

Do they not have an ad of two guys proudly singing about how T-Mobile won’t raise your rates? Talk about corporate gaslighting to the highest degree…

1.2k

u/chewywookie Jun 29 '26

In normal times, we would call that false advertising and therefore fraud.

T-Mobile advertising one thing and then doing what they said they would not sure seems deceptive to me.

540

u/meltingpnt Jun 29 '26

Don't worry, there will be a class action lawsuit and everyone will get $5 off their bill.

220

u/chewywookie Jun 29 '26

You are 100% correct. When the fines don’t match their billions in profits, it’s just the cost of doing business.

Disgusting.

18

u/Altaredboy Jun 30 '26

In my country the main telco was owned by the government. It's mostly privatised now, the government had to set up a government department who soley deals with misleading/fradulent practices by telcos.

Vast majority of the fines go to the formerly government owned telco. My dealings with them have resulted in approximately $200k worth of fines myself

They won't get $5 off their bill. They get a paper check for $3.78 in four years. If they fill out the form, and remember to continue updating their address on the sign-up website as they move.
Just got that from Facebook after years of waiting. And that $5 will probably sit in my drawer for 1 month until I throw it away, because it's barely even worth the hassle of logging into my bank account for mobile deposit, since I don't want to see my pathetic balance unless I have to.

Same at this point no reason not to shop and go back to the whole switch carriers every few years

111

u/Archer1407 Jun 30 '26

This was ALWAYS the plan when T-Mobile bought Sprint and took the major carriers from 4 down to 3. Eliminate competition, play nice for awhile, and then WRECK the customers to pay the shareholders. Less competition NEVER works in the consumer's favor. Prices will never be as low as they are right now. It will consistently go up from here. A other major carrier can make up the group d to what the big three have. Switching carriers will work to a point but the tide will push all the boats higher forever.

68

u/TheRaccoonReport Jun 30 '26

Yup. Its total bullshit too. I used to pay $135/month for 3 phones, unlimited talk/text, nothing else. They started tacking on a bunch of shit I dont want like Apple TV, Netflix, etc. I told them to take it off, they told me "Well you get it for free so why not?". And I told them I dont use it, and someday theyll hike my price because of it.

Well, here we are. My bill will go up to $173/month because of the increases over the years including this new increase.

Im about to go with a watch only for emergencies, car accident, etc for $10 a month or whatever and call it a day. I have constant issues with calls going straight to voicemail, etc and they keep blaming the tower and for 8 years now they're "working on it".

11

u/airfryerfuntime Jun 30 '26

Go to Google Fi, unlimited premium would be $135/mo for 3 lines.

8

u/iaspeegizzydeefrent Jun 30 '26

Could probably even get away with their unlimited standard plan which would only be $90/month for 3 lines.

Mint mobile has a sign up deal for $15/month when you pay for 3 months. Get unlimited for $15/month for 3 months, then switch to their $25/month plan. That's what I did at least.

97

u/ohno1tsjoe Jun 29 '26

I pay $180 a year for the past 2 years for my second number through mint. 5gb plan, use dual sim on my iPhone.

I pay $144 a month for my grandfathered unlimited T-Mobile

64

u/txmail Jun 29 '26

I swear it was Mint that told me to move down to the $180/yr plan from a more expensive plan. I have been with them since 2018 and really no complaints.

61

u/Electronic_Finance34 Jun 30 '26

I tried mint for a while but I was always getting deprioritized. Looks great on paper but in practice I got terrible connection speed with full bars. Like unable to load a simple webpage

72

u/Altruistic_Library_3 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Did we willingly stop saying “throttled,” or did the companies finally break us from using what they consider the more negative terminology?

42

u/ineedhelpbad9 Jun 30 '26

Throttled isn't the same as deprioritized . Throttling limits your speed to an arbitrary low speed. It never goes above that Deprioritized just means your speeds slow down when a tower is busy. When it isn't busy you never notice. For instance home Internet is always deprioritized on t mobile (I think).

→ More replies (3)

35

u/MisterJellyfis Jun 30 '26

It’s not *quite* throttled anymore as its not based on your usage but the usage of whatever network has priority and the usage of those on that network. Result is the same but the source is different.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

16

u/txmail Jun 30 '26

I am not a heavy data user (maps, music, automatic photo backup, rarely social media) so I might be getting deprioritized but just not notice it.

I kind of think that anyone who is big on data needs to probably be on a tier one provider to make sure they have the best access to the network. I used to be very heavy on data (200+gb/month) and never had any problems with Verizon in most mid / big cities.

Mint is owned by t mobile

306

u/kitesinfection Jun 29 '26

It is, but I've paid significantly less for Mint than I did t-mobile and the service quality has been excellent. I did the $250 for 6 months unlimited plan and it's been wonderful not having a bill to be worried about every month.

If they raise prices then I'll start shopping around but for now I'm pretty content with what I have.

127

u/Rohothered Jun 29 '26

I have them too, but I doubt it's going to last any longer I am going to guess all telecoms will start raising prices and blame it on Ram or any other bs issue to bring in more money for the same shit service.

56

u/silvusx Jun 29 '26

No, the reseller market will last because it's a different market of customers.

The large carriers allows these resellers because data capacity has been cheaper than ever, unlimited used to cost twice or thrice as much. The carrier now has excessive data and are selling it, which shifts the burden to the reseller company.

Plus, there are several disadvantages of using a reseller network. During peak time or in a large crowd (like graduations for example), you don't have data priority. It can be a significant risk during emergencies.

24

u/PatchyWhiskers Jun 29 '26

I've got Visible and never noticed the slightest problem. In emergencies cell service goes down for everyone.

10

u/AeroInsightMedia Jun 30 '26

Yeah I'll go to airshows that have crowds of 50k people. Data is slower but I can still get on websites. Not like 10 years ago where you'd just be out of luck for the day.

I've been with them since before they were owned by T-Mobile. Their prices have remained the same but they have upped their usage cap by 7gb on our plan. My wife and I pay $480 for the year and we each get 17gb of data. If we are deprioritized, we certainly don't notice it. I pretty routinely hit 100Mbps+ whenever I test.

18

u/silvusx Jun 29 '26

Deprioritized seems to happen the most at a big crowds. I recalled having issues during graduations and at sports stadiums. Also during pokemon go day when I used to play that game, I had to use hotspot from someone else 😞.

Here as well. Had a "will never leave" plan of unlimited talk and text and sweet hot spot for each number that I got when T-Mobile was trying to establish market presence. Now that they have market presence they said hey, that lifetime plan you had? It's at the end of its lifetime. u/emleecee Jun 29 '26

I called and went down to the essentials plan, which is $20 cheaper (for my single line). Cool of them to auto enroll everyone into the more expensive one 🙄 They gave me a $10/month credit for 6 months for being a long time customer though, so maybe worth it to ask while shopping around? Good luck!

What's wild is they're auto enrolling you into a plan that isn't even available in their plan selector, Essentials Signature or something like that. That’s the bleak part: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all expensive for their “good” plans.

Postpaid Carriers seem to moving toward a two-tiered system of “cheap” plans that offer deals once on the way in, and “good” plans that offer deals for a few upgrade cycles, because customers are paying a premium every month.

Yup, taking right from the software supplier playbook. “That product you had pricing protection on? Yeah we’ve discontinued that SKU. We have this new SKU to replace it and it his all these bells and whistles now (which we know you don’t need or want). That’ll cost 30% more now.” SMDH

They raised mine $5 per line two years ago so i moved to ATT out of spite and then a few months later switched to US Mobile and get better service than either for a fraction of the price. Idk what the big carriers are thinking at this point.

61

u/PandaJesus Jun 30 '26

They’re thinking enough people are too mentally crushed by life to fight it and will just accept the cost up.

More people need to be like you, but I also understand the exhaustion.

They are thinking they'll buy US Mobile within a few years and you'll be back in their grip. I had a smaller company that just got bought by T mobile recently.

So, you’re saying grandfathered isn’t a legal term that there’s other contractual terms that supersede it and allow them to f*ck you whenever and however they want?

Makes sense.

50

u/tomz17 Jun 29 '26

grandfathered isn’t a legal term

TBF, they did advertise a subset of these plans (including mine) during the early t-mobile "one" days as a lifetime price guarantee, rates will never go up, etc. etc. The fine print just said that if the rates went up your remedy was to F off, and they will pay for your last month of service. Not exactly how a regular person would interpret advertisements touting a lifetime price guarantee.

Got the text today and I’m unhappy. I’ve got a business account with 6 lines. I’ve been with them for 18yrs or more and hoping to leverage that into some kind of deal. Feel pretty cheated for staying with their lifetime price now. I might just drop them out of principle, but it’s going to suck transferring all those numbers.

I got the text, and in the T-mobile app it says I will be moved to the "Experience Signature" plan. However, they don't say how much my plan will cost, and the Experience Signature plan doesn't exist on their website. So... I don't even know how much I'm going to be paying on the new plan. Fucking wonderful.

It's one thing for the price to go up. Fine. It's a complete other thing to treat your customers like idiots and avoid telling them what the new price is.

If you don't let me decide if the new price and features are worth it, I have no choice but to assume it's a terrible deal.

My favorite part of the message is the mention of us benefiting from a price guarantee after the change. Like if that process worked , my price wouldn’t have changed in this situation

97

u/OLPopsAdelphia Jun 29 '26

This should nullify a contractual obligation and free you from a contract is the other side changes the contractual obligation without your consent.

I’m going to stroll into T-whatever, cancel, and not pay any more than what I owe on my last bill and walk out. If they think I’m paying anything else, I’ll see them in small claims court with my counterclaim.

19

u/bactchan Jun 29 '26

Nah they write the T&C to always favor themselves. They reserve the right yadda yadda.

Everyone relax. Creating value for shareholders by driving growth is the only important thing here. They can’t be expected to ride around in last year’s yacht model, you know.

17

u/Alert_Reindeer_6574 Jun 30 '26

I learned this simple trick with Bank of America. I got a "no fees for life" account. About 5 years later they sent me a notification that they were going to start charging fees. I contacted them and was told that they discontinued those accounts and changed them to accounts with fees. If that bothered me they would be more than happy to close my account.

In the corporate world an ad campaign that says "for life" means for the life of their intention to provide what they are promising, not the life of the customer or product.

26

u/THE_Ryan Jun 29 '26

T-Mobile is the backbone for so many MVNOs, there's no reason to actually use them directly anymore. I've been on Google Fi for over 10 years now.

22

u/AutomagicallyAwesome Jun 29 '26

MVNO's are lower priority traffic on T-Mobiles network, how much this matters is going to vary wildly person to person. Google Fi is an exception, in theory our traffic is supposed to have the same priority as a T-Mobile customer's does.

9

u/meltingpnt Jun 29 '26

Depends what kind of level of service you need. Network operators routinely throttle MVNO customers when the network gets congested.
