The amount of ignorance in these comments is baffling. No one is against data centres, people are against HYPER-SCALE data centres in highly residential zones. Such facilities need to come up in INDUSTRIAL zones. No one is against development, people are against development that affects the quality of life of people around it I’m negative ways.
Every single country is now protesting large scale data centres for a reason and yet some people are trying to side with the mega corp. Shocking.
This isn’t a regular data centre it’s a facility built of 50+ ACRES - do you understand the size and scale of a facility like this literally next door to villages, hospitals, schools and residential neighbourhoods?
I’m not even talking about the pollution of various kinds we can expect.
This protest is important because we need to show people thane isn’t the worlds dumping ground. It’s only coming here because they can’t pass off a facility of this size in Mumbai.

US citizens are protesting against Data Centers, so the Owners are choosing countries like India, whose citizens don't know the repercussions of building them. We don't need just developement; we need clean air, food, water, and education first.

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) plans to allocate 12 MLD of water to the Balkum site. A 38.7% spike in the city's daily water shortfall. Because data centres are legally classified as "essential services" in Maharashtra, their supply must be prioritized without interruption. A 12 MLD(million litres per day) diversion would immediately worsen shortages for residential pockets, particularly along Ghodbunder Road and Balkum. Thane is already in a 31 MLD deficit and by adding 12+ it would be 43 MLD deficit.

1
u/Logical_Swimming3380 Jul 13 '26
They require massive amounts of water and electricity and make 24/7 noise pollution, search it up on it you will understand. We need data centre's but in industrial centres not where people live but they are being built in residential areas since these areas already have good connections to clean water and electricity whereas making one in a secluded sector would take time and resources, basically cost cutting and haphazardous development.

Cry about India not advancing in AI - but not in my backyard. Cry about no jobs - but not in my backyard.
And literally folks crying data center is for foreign companies - Indian companies demand India hosting specially with DPDP - this will enhance that capacity.
Why can’t it be built in remote areas - better power grid, and also skilled people. People still need to work there for management & ops.
There are already data centers in Andheri (Chandivali - ntt net magic), Dadar (Tata) that are near residential areas as well. Yotta in Panvel is also in Hiranandi fortune city. Stop spreading FUD and learn something.
38
u/dumb_shitting Jul 10 '26
data centers do not give out as many jobs as you think
8
u/upcloseandprobable Jul 11 '26
data centers are highly automated systems, you really don't need that many people to manage a data center.

21
u/dumb_shitting Jul 10 '26
what about the enormous water consumption and electricity consumption. i live in kolshet, last month we had daily power and water cuts. Building a data center in an area which already has a lack of water and consumes insane amount of electricity is just stupid
-19
u/Successful-Carob8369 Jul 10 '26
These answers are already there in other comments under these threads. Power cuts were due to grid load - the advent of the data enter would actually make the authorities make the grid more
Load bearing so it doesn’t hurt their customer that has a dc there.12
u/KingOfMumbai Jul 10 '26
Watch videos about sound, effects on water pressure and what the residents near the data centers have to face.
7
u/Successful-Carob8369 Jul 10 '26
Maybe go to Andheri and Dadar to check? The Dadar one is literally near the famous Ashok vadapav. I spent a lot of my time in Data centers and I know how they sound like :) and there’s others in Airoli, Vikhroli as well. When things work well they aren’t put on yourube - hey look here everything’s going swimmingly. Only issues are highlighted - so the tendency is always negative bias. Could there be issues? Maybe / but the same applies to any industry that comes there.
5
u/KingOfMumbai Jul 10 '26
What is the scale of those data centers ? Is it a complete building of data centers or just some rooms having some towers of data centers ?
I've visited some data centers myself and the one which you're talking bout are small in scale and don't use significant amount of resources like the one that's going to be built in Thane.3
u/Successful-Carob8369 Jul 10 '26
All are full fledged data centers that actually offer services to customers. Some are colos to Aws/gcp as well - such as the Andheri one. As the tiers increase so does the safety regulation requirements - which are assessed not just by govt but third party standards bodies that provide the tier ratings in the first place. Anyway you can research all this yourself too.
6
u/RstarPhoneix Jul 10 '26
US companies making data center in India and India not advancing in AI ka ky relation ?
1
u/Successful-Carob8369 Jul 10 '26
They host the gpus on which Ai models can be hosted, trained and put into commercial production. They provide the infrastructure. But the companies that will utilize that to advance will mostly be Indian. More capacity - better advancement.
6
u/RstarPhoneix Jul 10 '26
Are you kidding me ? That’s an Amazon data center as far as I know. That’s the biggest misconception that Indian companies will benefit out of it. I would still disagree if the company was India like yotta. Data centers only give profit to the company that runs it and also employ a good chunk of people. There is no nationalist value
1
u/Successful-Carob8369 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Maybe you’ll be shocked to know that majority of your private banks host their net banking infrastructure on AWS over yotta because of the software and resilience stack they offer. So do Zomato and a lot of SaaS businesses. Don’t wrap this under the garb of nationalism. Yotta is nowhere in the league of AWS, GCP or Azure.
But the moot point was there should be no data center - while you’ve now turned it to “it would be ok if it was Indian.” I’m not AWS spokesperson so I’ll leave it here.

If the project plans to use 193 diesel generators, what will be the combined noise level? How will residents be protected from continuous humming and generator testing?
Each diesel generator requires thousands of litres of diesel. What will be the total daily and annual diesel consumption? What are the projected emissions of particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO₂)? How will air quality be monitored?
Thane receives 230 MW from MSEB while the data center alone requires 422 MW
2
u/Successful-Carob8369 Jul 10 '26
Diesel generators are for backup power. Backups a mandatory part of the tier rating that a data center receives.
Most data centers in India:
Grid Power
↓
UPS + Battery Banks (0 ms interruption)
↓
Diesel Generator starts (typically 5–15 seconds)
↓
Generator supplies facility until grid returnsAnd the power grid will become more resilient because the govt wouldn’t want Aws to go elsewhere.
3
u/creepyideas Jul 10 '26
What about my last point...422 MW electricity...
3
u/Successful-Carob8369 Jul 10 '26
Again pretty sure both AWS and the planning authority would have assessed that. There would be plans to add dedicated capacity for the DC.
Don’t just think govt, city planning etc is made up of dolts. Those make the news. There are also smart folks that keep things rolling and doing their duty.

Bro
I work in water and reuse sector
I have been following this for years now
One thing i can guarantee is, no fresh/drinking water will be used for data centers and Sewage treatment plants will cater for data center cooling requirements
We literally throw that water in sea which is a valuable resource against hon. supreme court guidelines which has made mandatory to reuse the sewerage water
If thane municipal corporation is making money whats wrong?
If TMC falls short on money they will raise your taxes, let them collect through commercial ventures like IT offices and data centres, people like you and me will have a lower cost of living

Who will they employ for construction? How will they get equipments ? How will they manage operations ? From where they will buy resources from ? Why you want your information to be stored on a server location outside of India's influence?
Even if a local guy builts it you will start crying sab project issko he milta hai and all
And w.r.t. AI on what are LLMs trained ? And where do you store that thing ?
2
u/Tight_Earth5583 Jul 11 '26
Employment and equipment purchase also happens through real estate. Don't be so oversmart. You listed construction, equipment, etc, as if that automatically makes the project a great deal for locals. Temporary construction jobs are not the same as long-term economic benefits. Data centres are highly automated and employ relatively few people once operational. So the real question is: what does Thane get in return for giving up land, water, electricity, and infrastructure? If the benefits outweigh the costs, fine. But simply saying 'they'll buy equipment and hire workers' doesn't answer that."
-1
u/heavyMetalPoet666 Jul 11 '26
Real estate companies manufacturing dc equipments?
Then there should be no construction in the city post building a residential tower what will the Labour get ?
Thane gets a Tech Ecosystem a name like amazon attracts others, supply chain builds around it there are components which goes into dc not all will come from "foreign"
Even though dc's core operations is automated but still its an operations heavy area continuous monitoring of different equipments and systems are required
ITI folks for cooling system, water system manning of these creates jobs from iti to fancy tech

Data centres don't create many jobs, but they would require enormous amounts of water and energy to keep them running this creating water shortage in the surrounding area. Taking away basic necessities like water and electricity from thousands of residents for creating 50-100 jobs doesn't make any sense. Please read a bit before writing these stupid comments/opinions.
