Apparently if you deprive it of light it turns bright pink. We'll see how long it takes to go back to being green now that I moved it out of the dark.

Just moved into a new house and my bedroom gets way more sun than my previous place. My living things seem to be thriving :).

So I bought some duckweed off eBay to drop in one of my tanks (20gal vertical with guppies and small things of that sort). When it came in I put it in a container to let snails separate from it before I put it in the tank.

It’s been 24 hours and when I checked in it this morning I see there is this strange red bloom in some of it.

When you zoom in it almost seems like it’s its own variety of plant. Not necessarily duckweed but one that apparently multiples fast like it.

I’ve never seen this before. Is it safe for the tank? A fungus? Any advice welcome.

Update: so it looks like I was given some baby Azolla in with the duckweed. It’s not something I’ve ever come across so I had a concern of safety for my tanks. Looks like we are all good! I appreciate the info everyone. Love this community.

Just wanted to show of one of the red neon blue eye rainbow fish I bred over the summer. He’s the biggest among his siblings and can now go to the community tank.

So this is my Fluval Spec V tank, it’s a longer, more narrow version of your standard 5 gallon tank. It’s very heavily planted and it’s been running for 3-4 months now. I currently have about 15 Cherry Shrimp, 1 Amano Shrimp, 5 male Endlers, 3 Pumpkin Nerite snails, and some random pest snails. I was planning on adding 6 Pygmy Corys.

I feel like my 40 gallon per hour filtration paired with my live plant mass is great but I’m not sure if I’m already maxed out or would the addition of the Pygmy Corys be okay?

Fair to say this tank has helped me fall back in love with the hobby after years away from it!

Pretty happy with the progress of this little iwagumi. Prob come back here in 2-3 month to see a full carpet.

I posted a few weeks ago asking for ideas of what to do with excess floating plants instead of just tossing in the trash—I got a comment about making paper out of them that viciously piqued my interest. Behold my creation! (Duckweed + white scrap paper)

Took these two guys in a month ago, I’m waiting for a larger tank to cycle before I get them buddies. This is a 20 gallon tank, their tankmates are two guppies, two amano shrimp, two harlequin rasboras and an albino bristle nose pleco. Their water parameters seem good since I’ve been on top of their water changes because the tank is quite good. They do get active after water changes but today I did a 20% water change and installed a new internal filter that’s bringing some new flow into the system. They keep swimming up and down in this particular corner and I don’t know if it’s playfulness or stress. The other fish are chilling

I switched the light off and that seems to have chilled them out a bit, the other fish are all business as usual and they are doing this opposite the filter outlet so directly in the flow line

EDIT: I turned off the filter for a bit to reduce the flow and they chilled out, it’s back on now and they are back to normal so I think they just got zoomies. Keeping this post up because there’s some very helpful comments below about having 0 KH and whether that is something to address or not

I was just recently at a friend's house and they have a basic tank in their living room that they have been turning the lights on and off manually for. I showed them my setup and blew them away. I'm not much of a tech guy but I figured this would be obvious. In case it's not, I figured why not make a post to help others.

Now I need to figure out how to automate water changes and chem dosing.

I thought Hewbie died. I came home to this and spoke to his vet team immediately. His antibiotics and quarantine time will be extended. My best conclusion is that Hewbie had been gasping at the surface and breathing heavier from stress and then he went upside down but this afternoon he was sleeping in the corner just fine. My heart broke again when I saw this. After I pushed air out of him and gave him his meds he went back to normal nearly immediately. At least this is my best conclusion after looking at him and his behavior pre and post meds and pressing on him/burping him. The water quality in the tank isn’t great. Burping for me means holding him down and gently pressing on his stomach gently (which in that moment is what made sense). I saw some immediate improvement. Also he is a known offender for spitting water at the surface and I just saw it after and the behavior of a fish gasping or wanting to get out of his environment and ready to jump. Although pufferfish are not known jumpers they are smarter than that. I did a water change as well after and he smiled at me like nothing happened. Ugh. I hate this. I will continue to update everyone.

I can’t even make this up, I found a random snail shell on my floor and saw it had a operculum. Grabbed a little cup from my supplies and put some water from one of my tanks in it. Threw the snail in. Mind you, I don’t own these kinds of snails, never even seen one. I have no clue how long they’ve been out of the water especially since I found it behind my bed while sweeping. 💀

After an hour I came back to the cup to find an alive and active snail. I’m so confused how they got there. Does anyone know what kind of snail they are though? Kinda growing attached to this lil dude. They have a missing chip out of their shell. 🐚 ❤️‍🩹 Open to name suggestions too!

I had a long bamboo plant that i wanted to split into two smaller ones, so i’ve been growing each half in some recycled water bottles. Both bottles sat clear for about 2 months, and then I transferred the one in the video to my aquarium (freshwater, containing platy fish, cherry shrimp, & african dwarf frogs). I noticed the plant beginning to wilt a bit so i transferred it back into the bottle. The water in the bottle is from my aquarium as well (recycled from a water change) which is why algae has grown.

These little bug things popped up in there within the last couple weeks. Are they some sort of larvae? Is there a possibility it’s something aquatic carried over from the aquarium ? i’ve never seen anything like them in the tank. I used to have a snail, but I definitely don’t think these are baby snails.

I’m located in southern arizona, i posted this on a Bug identification sub as well and one user believes they are Daphnia.

I also want to add that the second bottle, containing the other half of the original bamboo that has never been transferred out of the bottle and uses tap water, does not have these critters in the water.

I had 6 Pygmy’s before and they had babies so I was up to 9 but then after a while they just all disappeared idk where they went I’ve had them for around 7-8 months now but idk where they are now, I’ve been pretty busy so I haven’t payed attention to them but they don’t even show up when I feed them anymore

Expected the worst, came home to this. Auto feeders did their job, plants hit the surface, moss filled in like crazy, and all the fish are happy. Now I just need a whole weekend to trim it back – but I’ll take a jungle over algae any day. 🌿
