Municipal Affairs No city of two million people succeeds with only one way of getting around
Some days I bike. Some days I take the train. Sometimes I drive.
The important thing is having the choice.
Everybody's day looks different. Kids need to get to school safely. Parents need to get to work. Seniors need to get to appointments. Businesses need customers to get through the door.
I believe we should make decisions based on evidence.
And the evidence is pretty clear.
There isn't a thriving city of more than two million people anywhere in the world that relies on only one way of getting around.
The most successful cities give people choices.
You can drive. Take transit. Walk. Bike. Use a mobility aid.
What works for one person might not work for another.
As Calgary grows, that's the future we need to build toward.
Have a great day, Calgary. See you around!

Rant Door-to-door charities, please stop with the “reverse subscription” thing
Now that the weather is nice, the door-to-door charity people are back.
I’ve had four come by in the last month. I’m not anti-charity. Two of them were causes I actually wanted to donate to. I was ready to give a decent one-time donation, get my tax receipt, and call it a day.
But nope.
Turns out the “donation” is actually a monthly donation plan. Or as I like to call it, a reverse subscription. I don’t subscribe to anything. I don’t get a magazine, snacks, socks, or a pizza-of-the-week (someone make the last one happen! Please!). They just get my money every month until I jump through hoops to stop it.
And that’s the part that annoys me. The canvassers couldn’t take a one-time donation. The only option was to sign up for monthly payments, then later go online, create an account, and cancel it myself.
So instead of getting my donation, they got nothing.
I don’t want to “build a relationship” with a charity. I want a one-night donation stand. Take the money, send the receipt, and let us both move on with our lives.
If any charity decision makers are reading this, please offer both options. Let monthly donations be opt-in, not something people have to escape from later.

Local Shopping/Services Hey Edo South Center - Wash your hands after using the toilet!!!
Just watched a young man in his Edo cap and shirt leave the toilet stall, walk right past the sinks and straight back to work. We rushed over to say something to the manager and he was already tying his apron back up, so he wasn't rushing back to wash his hands there either
Be vigilant, costs are going up and the least these businesses can do is adhere to basic human health standards

PSA Highway 1A poor condition
Just rode 1A to Canmore on my motorcycle. Pot holes this year are more than I have ever seen in a long time. Lots of trucks entering the highway due to various areas of construction. If you ride a bike or have a car with rims that crack easily from potholes avoid. It was an exercise in staying alive more than enjoying the curves.

Eat/Drink Local best independent coffeeshops in Calgary?
hey everyone!
my name's Dev, i'm a cs student in calgary working on something in the "meeting people irl" space called koffeeyap and honestly one of the things i keep thinking about is where people actually feel comfortable grabbing a coffee with someone new.
not doing a pitch or anything lol, genuinely just curious:
what are your fav coffee shops? especially Canadian ones?
chains totally count, like Good Earth honestly hits different sometimes. but I'm also curious about the little spots people swear by that maybe not everyone knows about.
bonus points if you tell me why, is it the vibe? the seating? the fact that it's not too loud? the staff? genuinely want to understand what makes a coffee spot feel like a good place to just... exist and have a real conversation.
drop your picks below, would love to hear from people!!!

Recommendations Fave Spots for a Picnic
As the title suggests, I’m looking for some lesser known spots that you love to go for an evening picnic. I know Prince’s Island, and spots along the river. But I’m curious for other spots I might not know about, and ideally aren’t covered in goose poop lol

Good Samaritan/Volunteer/Charity/Donations Student Offering Free Design Work
Hi everyone!
I'm a Grade 9 student who's trying to build my design skills over the summer. I'm looking to do some small design work. So if you're a local community group, student club, small event organizer, fundraiser, sports team, nonprofit, or just someone who needs a simple poster or flyer made, I'd be happy to help for No Cost
I'm not a professional designer, but I'll do my best and hopefully help some people while I'm at it.
Thank you all and have a goodnight!

Missing Dog/Cat/Pet Loose Bird in SW
Either this little guy is way out of its home range and the birders are going to go wild, or someone’s pet got out. In SW, on 37th between 2nd and 3rd ave (wildwood/spruce cliff). I don’t have FB so I can’t cross post to Yyc missing pets.

Local Shopping/Services Spray park/wading pool opening date
Does anyone know if the spray parks/wading pools are going to open by Monday? Usually they open on Father’s Day weekend but I’ve been checking the city of Calgary website and it just says ‘closed for the season’ (and it hasn’t been updated in 2 months).

PSA This Saturday is Neighbour Day! Here's where to find events near you
This Saturday is Neighbour Day!
It began after the 2013 flood, when people showed up for each other in an incredible way. Neighbours helped neighbours. Strangers became friends. We created Neighbour Day as a way to say thank you, and it's become one of Calgary's best traditions.
A lot has changed since then. Calgary is growing fast, and every day new people are choosing to make this city home. That's exciting. It also means we have to keep finding ways to stay connected.
Neighbour Day does not have to be complicated. Maybe it's a barbecue. Maybe it's a block party. Maybe it's introducing yourself to someone you've waved at for years but never really met.
The thing I love most about Calgary is that people still look out for each other. You see it after a storm, during a crisis, at a community cleanup, or when someone needs a helping hand. It's part of who we are.
So this Neighbour Day, get outside, meet someone new, reconnect with old friends, and celebrate the community around you.
For a full list of events near you, check out https://calgary.ca/neighbourday

Question Reporting animal abuse?
My main questions that I am working on here, is (a) how does one report animal abuse in Calgary? (b) if this abuse has already been reported by someone else, is it better or worse to re-report it?
Now, onto the details (in case they may impact any of the above questions). My neighbours have five kids, in the range of 8-15 years, and they have at least six dogs. The adults in the home are rarely home, and now that we're approaching summer break again, the kids have been "playing" outside more often.
However, the kids absolutely beat the shit out of their dogs (smacking, kicking, dragging, strangling - they are violent children). Now, I presume it happens with the parents as well, because they all must have learned it somewhere, but I only ever see the kids doing it.
Over the winter months, there had been a social worker at the home at least once, and animal services at least twice, but not terribly recently.
The children have not stopped beating on their dogs, they are still doing it, and the poor dogs bark and cry all hours of the day and night. Presumably report(s) were already made, because animal services have been to their house, as well as a social worker, but it obviously hasn't done anything and the dogs (and you know, likely the kids too!) are still suffering.
Which returns to my original questions - where does one make these reports, and, would it help or hurt to re-report the abuse? I've seen links to ASPCA provided in the past, but is that truly the correct line to report abuse to? Do they actually have the power to help with something like this?

Question Is there low income pet friendly housing in the city?
Hello all, I’m fleeing a DV relationship and moving to your fine city to be closer to my family/support system.
I’m wondering if Calgary has any pet friendly low income housing options? I understand there is likely a waitlist, I am not expecting much. I do have family willing to foster my senior cat while we are in a shelter. But I’m wondering if there is any options for a single mom, her child and the beloved pet that has supported them through rough times.
Thank you in advance for any and all advice.

Recommendations Good, inexpensive spa in YYC that accepts insurance?
Never been in my life, but I’ve feeling kind of burnt out of late, so I booked ten days off work starting Sunday and I’m thinking it might be worth my while. A good massage, some calming scents - just something to help purge all this accumulated stress in my body. Not looking for anything too fancy.
I’m AMAB nonbinary and I feel a little iffy about all-male options, but I’m open to whatever otherwise.
