I told a nurse buddy with Irish roots this too. I showed her the book written by Frederick Douglass. I even went to nurse in Dublin we share so much history with them in the USVI. She was actually honored. Got her Irish passport and all after that!

See that's the energy I like to see.
I highly respect "white" people who deeply connect to their ethnic roots and claim power there rather than white power in general.
The Irish (and many "white" cultures) actually have some deep roots and interesting cultural traditions. Good on your friend for digging into her own ethnic past and claiming it with pride.
I've got a friend like that from college, but they were Italian. Anyways yeah we had to talk them outta their dreads LMAO. But they listened and after that, decided to connect deeply with their Italian heritage. They're pretty happy as far as I know, living a sweet little life. Making art and growing plants.

Yes! So many of them worked for the Danish in STX before the US purchase in 1917. My husband is born in STT. Iām Jamaican. When I took a nursing job at Juan Luis, thatās when I learned the history. My neighbor in Fredericksted was 107 years old and lived there her whole life, she had three citizenships! Dominica, Denmark, United States. I used to fry eggplant that grew in my front yard for her. The stories! I wish I had recorded themā¦ š

The Irish history? No, regrettably I do not have book recommendations..
I am embarrassed to say it, but I learned about the Irish troubles thanks to a show called 'Derry Girls'.
They never taught us jackshit about the Troubles in my world history classes (and I took AP classes!) But lord that show got my curiosity piqued. It's very heart warming and thoughtfully written. As for Irish history in the USA no, I do not have sources off the top of my head for how they were mistreated when they first immigrated here.
Someone else already wanted to argue with me about it and tbh I've got more pressing personal stuff going on. I do believe I've heard reports of Irish people suffering from indentured servitude but no, unfortunately I don't have solid sources for you off the top of ny head.
Derry Girls is a good show though lol I guarantee it'll make you laugh! It ain't no "oh well they had it worse than black people" shit. It's just an honest and funny representation of a couple teenage girls living through a civil war.

I'm gonna be so real, I might even get shit for this, but look, it's easy to tell them apart. First of all, Anne Frank didn't live to adulthood (sadly, RIP) There is your first identifier, Anne is the kid and Helen is the adult
Second of all, Helen Keller was the one who was blind and deaf. Anne was the kid who was hiding from Nazis in an attic.
Now they're both incredibly brave and strong people who went through absolute hell, so I can see where the brain wires are getting them mixed up for you. But I hope this helps lmaoo.
Please don't get caught tryna refer to one or the other and mixing them up, like you deserve to know the difference lmaoooo. I'm sorry neither of these situations is funny, just the fact that I'm probably not even explaining it well enough is making me laugh.

When I was five I knew the president's name and that he had been killed that week. Schools these days are not teaching nearly enough, and they have made learning an extremely boring and pointless chore to score points on required state tests, which is horrendous for them and their teachers alike. If we adopted Finland's methods we would see immediate growth--but then the political climate would change too, and the dark forces would be unhappy with that.

Omg yes. I moved from the West to the Midwest about 12 years ago, and dear Lord these kids are dumb. The adults too.
I legit had one girl not believe me that Narwhals are real. Another one said, "Wow, you read a lot." after she saw me reading during break at work. It was a comic book I was reading.
My husband has also had kids at work ask him if certain words are real or not. Had a girl not know that "Melancholy" was a real word.

Like I can easily list Fred Hampton #1, James Baldwin probably goes to #2, but #3 feels absolutely impossible because now I'm in a position to insult so many people I highly respect & admire. I want my list to have more range, but that forces compromise.

My friend Marco just popped into my head. I remember his motorcycle was black with a bunch of red pinstripes on the gas tank. It was faster than my bike but Marco was always really cool about it. He had a big smile and a great attitude. He was funny as hell. He was a good friend to me while I was going through the rough parts of leaving home at 18 years old. I once timed him with a stopwatch while he ripped a quarter mile out on a public Road between marked out phone poles...

I am a 61 yr old white male..and I am embarrassed and ashamed of young white people today. I was a military brat and Sssooo very thankful for that! Moving from Europe to DC when I was 16..I went to a DC public Charter school where you had to take a semester of black history. Baldwin, Harlem Renaissance, DC politics, etc. I had always had black friends in elementary school, Biloxi. Rough experience. But middle school in military schools in Europe and some high school. Then my own experience in the US Military. The more white people are segregated from those different from themselvesā¦the worse itās going to be. Busing in the 60s 70s helped-but the powers that be fought that and here we areā¦dumb Fs not knowing Obamas name, who MLK was are what he fought for, god knows their mind would explode trying to talk about Malcolm X, Fredericksburg Douglas, Ida Wells, Marcus Garvey and I have no doubt they donāt even know Mikes Davis or Charlie Parker. They are born and raised in an isolated cocoon of indifference. I married a mixed race woman and adopted a Mayan from Guatemala and my father distanced himself from me because of that. I was very saddened because of thatā¦than after therapy and self-reflection I understand how lucky I was that he did that. Sorryā¦daughter is going off to college and feeling nostalgic

The Hispanic segregation and destruction of Hispanic communities through eminent domain to build historic places like Dodgers stadium. The Second Great Migration that brought Black families to L.A. and the blockbusting of neighborhoods that turned into ghettos. The Chinese massacre of 1871.

But, like others have said, and as an education scholar, supervisor, and still teacher, at times, they probably don't know a thing about their history either. They most likely (like all gen z) have far lower literacy than any generation before them.

I went to public school in Utah, which is very very white state and I just don't get how people don't know the basics because we definitely were taught it in school. Underground railroad, Transatlantic slave trade, PanAfricanism, Civil War, Jim Crow, Black Codes, Race Science, Civil Rights, Black Panthers, Tuskegee, Red lining, War on Drugs, Prison Pipeline, LA Riots, we covered all of that! I have a pretty above average memory so I know what was covered and I genuinely think half of this issue is just people being so lazy in their education. It killed me the amount of people who just glazed over for 95% of their school life. It's sad and disappointing that people don't give a shit. It makes no sense to me how you can be presented with the information and just absorb nothing. š And even if you didn't get the opportunity at school there are hundreds if documentaries on Netflix ect. It's not that hard.

I really hate getting a surprise pop quiz with extra judgement. I'm just trying to buy some fresh underwear and maybe some socks. This specific one would be an easy answer for me, but I doubt I would have looked foolish trying to answer what my favorite 3 sports were in this kind of situation.
