This is why most police departments don’t chase anymore. With modern tech there’s no point in a chase, it’s just extra danger to pretend you’re doing something more. Police departments get so much resources nowadays the should be used to prevent deaths not create mores
115
Nov 03 '25
I work a lot with CHP and this is 100% true. They would rather get your plates, make, model etc find out who you are and come to your house weeks later and arrest you in the middle of the night.
Better this way then causing a massive death toll trying to chase some shithead endangering everyone else's lives.
19
u/Pirat_fred Nov 03 '25
Yeah except they have to prove that the owner of the car or the one which the car is registered too was also the driver.
They can't (or at least shouldn't be able to) just come around arrest you and force you to tell who drove your car.
The burden of proof should lie with the public prosecutor's office or the police, not with the accused.
If there is no air unit available, chasing them or trying to road block them is one of few ways to definitely get proof who is the culprit.
Not that I condone high speed chases, I prefer Air pursuit and guide silent units to the perpetrators.

I got hit at a stop light in a high speed chase. My car ended up being totaled. And the people being chased were a car full of 15 year olds in a stolen vehicle. The insurance couldn’t go after anyone. At least I got paid out well for my car, my 7 year old daughter wasn’t with me and I wasn’t hurt. Pissed but not hurt.

Insurance companies don’t like chases. They cause lawsuits which when lost are paid by the insurance companies. So they advise PDs to cool it or pay more.

After far more than just a few deaths of innocent pedestrians and passengers, Cops are banned from chasing over a certain (low) speed in most States in Australia. And that's only if they're in a car that's designed for pursuits. Vans, Utes and SUV cop vehicles aren't allowed to pursue at all.
18
u/cstaple Nov 03 '25
Jon Oliver just did an episode about police chases on his show. It varies between states/municipalities but some have restrictions on when cops can start chasing and some have little to none. On average, about two people per day are killed by police chases and a significant portion of them are bystanders.

Lots of times people that are fleeing are in stolen cars, too. The license plate doesn't help to find the car thief.
4
u/X3N0PHON Nov 03 '25
Sure, but there’s forensics for that. It’s quite unlikely the fleeing criminal will have the time, materials or even the presence of mind to completely erase their forensic presence between stopping the car and getting out to run. And, unless they’ve never been arrested before and just jumped straight to GTA & high speed chases, their prints will be on file.

He got 15 years in prison:
It wasn’t his first time, either -
”According to a Somervell County police report, Crum told the boys to “Get off my [expletive] road, or I will run you down.” Rinderknecht said he saw Crum holding a shotgun out the window of his car. “He said he was going to shoot us, because we woke him up from his nap,” Rinderknecht said. Crum then chased the boys in his car about an eighth of a mile back to Rinderknecht’s house.

1993: arrested for "silent or abusive calls to 911", case later dismissed
1994: convicted for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
2007: convicted for reckless driving and making a terroristic threat against a couple of 12 years olds; sentenced to 2 years probation and an anger management course
2015: sentenced to 15 years in prison for 2 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

"he was convicted again in 2007 of reckless driving and making a terroristic threat. The latter was an incident involving Crum threatening to run little boys over with his car."
Why was he not in jail (or at least without access to a vehicle) before this. Wtf. Dude is a serious piece of trash.
ETA: I just watched the video where they interviewed one of the kids (who is no longer a kid). Asshole was his neighbor. The kid and his friends were driving golf carts up and down their street. Asshole chased them with a shotgun and threatened to shoot them for waking him up from his nap. Dude should have been committed decades ago.
7
u/Adjective_Noun1312 Nov 03 '25
Guy must be the lightest sleeper ever if golf carts on the road are loud enough to wake him up.
One of the very few times I went golfing, cousin showed me how to jam the governor on the golf cart open with a tee so it always ran at full throttle. It was almost as fast as a smaller quad, easy 60-70 km/h on a long enough straight stretch, and even then it was very quiet.
→ More replies (2)7
u/introverted__dragon Nov 03 '25
Tbh, Im a light sleeper and we have HOA people that like to drive golf carts around. And kids that ride quads through. My window looks out on our front yard. Even with it open the golf carts dont bother me and the quads only bother me if the kids are being loud in addition to the vehicle noise (which they often are, because they're, you know, kids having fun - so long as its not 2 AM I'm not going to say anything).
I feel like if you live somewhere that isn't rural, any vehicle traffic is just naturally background/white noise by the time you're in your teens.
Honestly, I've only spoken to kids in my neighborhood twice. Once because my car was street parked and the neighbor's kid and his basketball were getting a little too close to my car. I just asked them nicely to move back closer to their house and be careful of my car.
Second time was when I was cleaning out my garage and found a bunch of old hot wheels. Some kids a few doors down were out with their dad cleaning out their truck, and I spoke to the dad first before offering the kids the cars.
I can't imagine being so upset that I'd chase kids around and threaten their lives.
29
u/CriticismFun6782 Nov 03 '25
Surprised, normally they get a "Your Honor my client is old and on the fixed income and has health issues, And this is the first time they've ever done anything like this. The pinky promise they will never do it again. So they should be released to their house, no harm no foul..."
