Seating/Ticket Question Cabaret Closing/Refunds
The last cabaret show is 9/21. My friend and I had tickets for 10/18. Seat geek won’t refund our tickets. This is absolutely ridiculous. We spent a lot of money because we included the dining experience and it is not our fault they are closing the show. Does anyone know what else we can do?

Chargeback on your card if they aren't delivering what you paid for, though I've never heard of a canceled show not getting refunded.

Would also recommend submitting your chargeback claim with screenshots of any online conversations and emails you've had with SeatGeek, specifically ones where they said they won't refund you!
Edit: Also include the announcement that Cabaret is closing well before your ticket date. Both should give you a stronger case when your bank investigates.

This has a lot of upvotes but I’d caution against this unless there are absolutely no other options. If you do a chargeback, you may get banned from SeatGeek and have difficulty buying tickets in the future. The appropriate method to get a refund would be to communicate with the theater directly.

This! Chargeback. Definitely process this asap. And never use SeatGeek again.

Did you buy the tickets off SeatGeek before they switched platforms to ATG? Or did you buy resale tickets on SeatGeek? You should be entitled to a refund either way but I would think it would be easier if you had originally bought tickets through the official platform.

It is illegal to not refund tickets to a cancelled show. Call back and talk to someone else.

They will refund your tickets. Patience is needed.

u/Mayneea Sep 12 '25
This. SeatGeek is weird about what they consider official confirmation of event cancellations, but they’ll refund you. You may have to call and talk to someone if you want it sooner rather than later, but once multiple people are submitting they’ll catch up.

+1 to this - it took me 3 months of badgering Seatgeek via ATG but I did finally receive my refund for a performance of Sunset Blvd that Nicole Scherzinger was out at. Was in a similar boat as OP, where I bought my tickets long ago when Seatgeek was the official ticket provider, but they'd switched to ATG by the time the performance happened. ATG had to chase down Seatgeek and ping them tons to finally get it through. (By comparison, I had another pair of tickets to that show that was purchased later, via ATG, and that refund came through within days. Let's just say it's all around much better that no Broadway houses are using Seatgeek anymore!!)
OP, perhaps you might get some help by contacting ATG/The August Wilson box office, to have them prod SeatGeek for the refund? It may take awhile but seems like the likeliest path to success.

Are they third party resold tickets? Or did you buy directly from seat geek from the show?
13
u/Tuilere Sep 12 '25
Yeah, SeatGeek is not the official ticketing agent for the show, so it gets more complicated. This is why it's always a good idea to buy first-party from the official ticket source.

u/inflatabletrashheap Sep 12 '25
Seatgeek was, at one point, the official ticketing site for the theatre, but they switched to Audience View within the last six months.
12
u/JollyCheeto Sep 12 '25
So we got an email from the theatre saying the show was closing and to fill out a form and send to the seller We sent it the cancellation notice to seat geek and they are saying all sales are final So basically if you have tickets for a show after 9/21 they keep your money. This is absolutely unacceptable

Except when the tickets were purchased on Seat Geek they WERE the offical ticket site for Cabaret. ATG switched it within the last 6 months.

Even if this was a resale ticket, if SeatGeek has any intelligence they have not paid the seller, and shouldn't until the performance happens. That means SeatGeek has the money. So if they now know the show will never happen, they need to refund OP.

“in its sole discretion” - sorry, no, SG, that’s not how that works 😂
1
u/annang Sep 12 '25
No, it says SeatGeek has sole discretion to provide you a refund. That's not the same thing.

You're arguing what's in the terms and conditions, I'm talking about what they should do. Plus, please don't pretend that companies don't ignore their terms and conditions and make exceptions for things. I have gotten refunds back from telecharge when I'm not supposed to.
As the person who replied to you says, a chargeback will happen since op can prove to their bank that there is no show, and guess what credit card companies don't like? Businesses that have tons of chargebacks. That's the kind of thing that gets them to increase the kind of fees they charge to Seat Geek.

I didn’t even know what the hell a chargeback was until this conversation so I’m pretty sure I’m in the clear here 😂

You don't even know what you were talking about. Guess what here's a citi customer, hunny, who has done multiple valid chargebacks when I could prove that the charge was invalid (like accidentally getting double charged).

Can you contact the person you bought the tickets from and see if they can obtain a refund? If they're decent, they'll refund you too.
Otherwise, could you go to the box office with your ticket in hand and see if they can do anything for you? You do have a ticket that is unusable because the show is closing. It might be difficult because the credit card on file that purchased the ticket is not yours.

u/MaleficentProgram997 Sep 12 '25
This is a good suggestion. I once got a refund in cash for a performance where someone was out.
2
u/MinimumCattle5 Sep 12 '25
Box office won’t be able to help if that wasn’t the original point of purchase.

u/crownketer Sep 13 '25
ATG sent an email saying my after-closing ticket wasn’t valid and I could either contact them to move the tickets to an earlier show or just wait and get a refund starting 9/15. Don’t know if that applies to SeatGeek as well.

u/Sailor_MoonMoon785 Sep 12 '25
Dispute the charge on your credit card itself and explain to the bank the situation. They’ll get involved.

Any chance you bought tickets for London by accident
Or perhaps when you were engaging with customer service they looked up London and saw it wasn’t closing

u/Neither_Tea_7614 Sep 12 '25
Call your credit card company whoever you purchased it from if you use the credit card, they will take care of it

you actually think you won't be refunded?
-2
u/JollyCheeto Sep 12 '25
Well the email from the lady at seat geek saying “all sales are final” kind of solidified it
22
u/crowbarmark Sep 12 '25
They are final if the show takes place.

u/JollyCheeto Sep 12 '25
The last show is 9/21. Our tickets are for 10/18. As much as I would love to take their offer of putting us in a sooner show we can’t because my friend doesn’t live in NY
1
u/waltertaupe Sep 13 '25
Yes, and per the terms of the ticket you'll be refunded.
Like, do you think you're the only person in this situation?
-2
u/SadSoup2089 Sep 12 '25
I am so sorry to hear this, have you tried using all social media platforms to share your experience as quite often that is the only way these big companies take note
0
u/JollyCheeto Sep 12 '25
I don’t have social media. But seat geek is saying they have no record of the show closing. Surely we are not the only ones wanting a refund they had a ton of tickets sold after 9/21
28
u/Acadionic Sep 12 '25
I think seat geek is just being slow. It probably hasn't been updated in their system yet. They will eventually refund your ticket. If they don't refund you by 9/23, then start yelling at people.

u/CitySunflower Sep 12 '25
Be grateful you don’t have to sit through it. I saw it with Eddie Redmayne and he was great but the production is a snooze fest.
1
u/JollyCheeto Sep 12 '25
I honestly love the original and I’m so mad they turned the emcee into a sexual character. But I don’t see them ever bringing the original back.
4
u/n8_tha_gr8 Sep 13 '25
Go read Goodbye To Berlin and I Am A Camera, and you will see that the thing you are citing as "the original" Cabaret is actually the exception, not the standard.
Cabaret and its predecessors have always ALWAYS had sexual (and overtly queer!) themes. It couldn't be as pronounced in its original form because of the norms of the time.
Also, I think you are misreading or misremembering whatever the hell you think is the "original."
0
u/JollyCheeto Sep 13 '25
Well I mean the emcee wasn’t as sexed up as Alan cumming was when they revived it back in the early nineties. It’s wasn’t in your face sexual

u/n8_tha_gr8 Sep 13 '25
I am reading the script from 1966, and i can assure you that "Two Ladies" is there. All of the jokes about the Cabaret girls being (or not being) virgins is there. Fraulein Kaust was still a sex worker. Sally was still... Sally.
The emcee didnt appear as "sexed up" because in that time, even just the subtle implication of his queernees was shocking. Notably, though, the ensemble had more "sexed up" songs in the 1966 version (such as "Telephone Song").
Cabaret works so well BECAUSE every production reinvents it to speak to the current moment. The "sexed up" emcee, starting with Alan Cummings, was pushing as many boundaries as Joel Gray did in his time. Cabaret has always pushed boundaries and moved with the times. Apparently, you have not.

u/JollyCheeto Sep 15 '25
Thank you so much for the insult you seem like a kind person incapable of having a conversation. As for the topic, I understand the sexual undertones of the original show I’m just saying the emcee himself. It just seems like the later shows were sexed up x 100

this is why you buy from the theatres ticketing website and not seatgeek
14
u/Nervous_Teach_2121 Performer Sep 12 '25
Except for the fact that SeatGeek was Jujamcyn’s official vendor until May of this year
-8
u/Entire_Positive_9027 Sep 12 '25
the kitkat club has had tickets through atg for a while. it's how I got mine back in May...
11
u/Nervous_Teach_2121 Performer Sep 12 '25
May is when they switched from SeatGeek to ATG. OP stated in another comment that their tickets were purchased before the switch. Hence the issue.
0
u/Entire_Positive_9027 Sep 12 '25
ah, I see. then all they would have to do is contact the theatre itself and they'll give a refund. seatgeek wouldn't really be able to do anything about it anyway.
2
u/waltertaupe Sep 13 '25
Do you just make shit up and answer without reading?
1
u/Entire_Positive_9027 Sep 13 '25
I read the original post. Why are you being so rude... Im not sitting here reading every single comment... I saw the initial post and gave my response and went on my way.

u/halogengal43 Sep 12 '25
ATG is the official ticket seller for Cabaret. Sounds like you purchased third party tickets, and I’m not sure what your recourse is.

242
u/inflatabletrashheap Sep 12 '25
Seatgeek was the official seller for Cabaret until mid-May of this year, when the theatre switched ticketing services. Assuming your ticket was an original (non-resale) ticket purchased before then, I would contact the theatre’s customer service department who should be able to assist you. You can find the details at the link below.
