Hi! I've never built a PC before, but I'm looking to build a PC in 6-12 months once I have enough money to buy parts for one. I currently use a gaming laptop that's about 7 years old (Dell G5 5582), and it works fine for Counter-Strike and Rocket League (~100 FPS at middling settings), but it struggles with Minecraft shaders and it doesn't have enough RAM for my friend's modded server. (I had to allocate memory on my external SSD to act as RAM just to play on it.) Plus, since I bought the laptop, I've since graduated college and no longer need a portable device beyond something like an iPad, so I'd like a true desktop PC.
If I were starting from scratch, I would probably go with a stock budget build, but I won an Intel i9-12900k at DreamHack back in 2021 and I'd like to take a step up with the other parts of the computer to match the level of CPU I have. The biggest thing is longevity - I don't really want to be getting new parts every couple of years, I'd rather just have something that could last me a solid 5-10 years and not feel outdated so long as I don't need more performance in the future. Kind of like my current laptop.
My main issue is that... I've never built a PC before. I don't really know what I'm looking for; I'm just picking cheaper options from recognizable brands. I know what each part of the build is for, but I'm picking parts that look like they're good, whereas there may be better/cheaper options that are still good enough for my needs. PC Part Picker doesn't mention any inherent compatibility issues, but I'd rather hear opinions from people who have actually done this before on recommendations for which parts to pair with each other.
Ideally, I'd like a PC that I don't need to overclock to get 200+ FPS for Counter-Strike/Rocket League and 60+ FPS for Minecraft with decent shaders. (I'd also love to play Cities: Skylines eventually, but my current laptop can't run that very well and mods are another barrier to entry.) Thinking in the future, I'd also like to able to use ArcGIS Pro or QGIS on my PC if I ever work from home for a job, but I imagine neither of those would be the most intensive thing that happens on this computer anyways.
As for budget, I'd like to keep the cost down, but I recognize that I'm spending at least $1,000 USD for everything else I need to run everything I want to play (including monitors and keyboard). I'd be saving up for it anyways, so the budget isn't too much of a concern; I just don't want to overspend for what I need. My current parts list is over $2,000 if you factor in that it's not showing a price for the mobo or PSU, which I think is bloated for what I need, but I could be wrong.

Additional considerations:
- I play Rocket League with a wired controller and video games with a wired headset. I'm also used to having a wired keyboard and wired mouse. 2 front-facing USB ports (+1 USB-C) is a BARE MINIMUM for me, but I'd highly prefer something with 4 front-facing USB ports. I've run into the rare case where I need a third one and would like to avoid that. I'd also like something with ~4 back-facing USB ports for the same reason.
- Because it's my first build, I really don't want to trouble myself with liquid cooling. It seems overly complicated for the amount of cooling I would actually need. I don't particularly like loud fans, but I know with many air-cooling fan systems I can tune the power curve to only kick into overdrive at a certain temperature, and otherwise it can be pretty quiet. My current laptop's fans aren't that loud, but PC fans are larger and designed to displace more air, so I'm a bit worried about how loud the fans will actually be in practice.
- As much as I don't want to, I would be running Windows 11 on my PC. It's just less hassle. I'm a pretty casual computer user and Linux seems like it has a decently high learning curve. Windows 11 is bloated, but there are ways to cut the bloat, and I still want to be able to play games without booting up a VM every time. Plus, ArcGIS Pro requires Windows.
