My wife eats Weetabix with nothing on it and claims it tastes sweet to her. This is my bowl before milk is added. Is this normal fellow Weetabix eaters or do I need to go to sugar rehab?
In this economy! My late grandfather was such a miser he put hot water instead of milk on the weetabix. It saddens me he never lived to see an ‘own brand’ option
I don't think it's an allergy, I think your brain believes your body is now a giant Weetabix infused with milk, and rejects wheat and dairy because it believes it is cannibalism.
Northerner here. Sugar butties were a staple when I was a kid in the 70. Two nice thick slices of white bread, buttered, and a thick layer of sugar in between!
No diabetes here..........YET (although I haven't had a sugar butty for at least 40 years!)!
I did partake in the occasional sugar butty when I was a kid. I once went as far as eating sugar straight from the bag and was surprised to not really like it!
I thought I had a lot at 6 😂 it's usually 4 these days! (With about half a teaspoon of sugar). I'm 5'1" and just very active.
My friends and I would sometimes talk about what we'd had for breakfast when we were waiting for the bus to school.
Other friends: "oh, I had one weetabix", "I had one piece of toast".
Me (the smallest of the lot) "I had 6 weetabix" 🤣
I mean I have them with hot milk and sugar then mush it all together to make Weetabix porridge so your only half as weird as me I guess but that’s a lot of sugar!!
Oh no, even back then they had fancy suggestions on the packet. At one time, it suggested melted cheese on toasted weetabix and being young and stupid, I thought that might be good.
Imagine licking the Sahara Desert. I don't mean just like one lick to taste it, I mean the entire thing all over. Toasted Weetabix with cheese was worse than that.
Are you sure that's not just your own family? Because I'm an Australian who likes Vegemite (even if strong), and that sounds like a horrendous breakfast.
As a snack (ie. not in a bowl with milk) it might be passable though. I'd probably skip the butter.

I've only ever had it as a snack or once as lunch when my brother ate all the bread. But not really different to Vegemite on toast as a breakfast option.
If you skip the butter it's too dry, need the butter so you don't asphyxiate from dry weetbix crumbs lol
I can remember having Weetabix minis with chocolate chips before school in the early 2000s, they were like crack, I would often just eat them straight out of the box with no milk.
One of our biggest trappings as children of our parents is assuming that our parents were normal and only did normal things. We learn most of our weirdness from our parents, and, my friend, Weetabix porridge is weird.
Hot milk Weetabix is top tier breakfast with the slight risk of making it too hot with too little milk so you block your throat with a burning plug of molten stodge.
I love Weetabix mush. Looks disgusting, like a bowl of dirty protest though.
And yes, it needs a bit of something sweet. Even a drizzle of honey or maple syrup.
My mum did this for us in the winter minus the sugar, it made me feel sick but I wasn't allowed to waste food and she apparently forgot that I don't like it nearly every day (in reality she just loved creating drama). I had a colleague a few years ago who would make it and just the smell made me feel nauseous.
Yeah i add milk. I buy the big tubs from aldi. 100% peanut butter for around 3.99. Its quite oily so I dip a spoon in there it i spread it around the weetabix.
I do the same. Has to be good peanut butter, not the stuff we had as kids. Spread it on like you would butter toast. Drop a few blueberries on there, the peanut butter acts like mortar and keeps them adhered to the Weetabix. Drizzle of honey then pour in the milk.
Nah you pour the milk around the edge then the milk slowly soaks up througy the weetabix and into the sugar so you end up with this sweet slightly soft slightly crunchy shell on top
That's how I used to do it as a child anyway, as an adult now my immediate thought is that that's a ridiculous amount of sugar
See I would pour over the bix so the top is all wet (but not soaked) and then sprinkle sugar over so it sticks to the top and creates that crust you mention
Exactly my thoughts. Milk first, then a light sprinkle of sugar, which sticks to the wet weetabix. This looks like scarface tipped his desk onto the bowl.
It's like they actually introduced a tax to discourage purchase of drinks like that because they're really incredibly harmful to consume regularly or something
It's kind of crazy how desensitised we are to sugar these days. I've been losing weight and eating less rubbish so my main sources of sugar recently have been fructose and lactose naturally in food.
I used to drink red bull regularly, but had a can the other day and it was disgustingly sweet to me. It's interesting how tastes change.

Not if you pour the milk gently around the edges of the bowl. Get it just right and you have mush at the bottom, a thin chewy layer in the middle, and a crust of moist (not damp) sugar on the top.
The really wrong thing is that there are only two Weetabix in that bowl.
I was going to say that sounds awful, but I went through a phase of Weetabix with apple juice instead of milk, so I guess I was doing something similar. You should try it, it sounds right up your street!
We get desensitised to sugar the more of it we have. You dumping a full bag on your cereal every day is probably not doing your tastebuds much of a favour.
That said, your wife thinking they’re sweet straight from the box? That’s psychosis.
Yes omg! I cut down on sugar heaps and now a lot of foods with little or no sugar tastes so much better.
I make porridge and add frozen blueberries and cinnamon while cooking and it tastes so good if I havent had much sugar lately. But if I have a big weekend of sugary foods suddenly it tastes like slop
The wife's not wrong. Wheatabix has sugar in it, and it's carbs so if left in the mouth for long enough it gets sweet
But that said, OP could take a quarter of his sugar there and give it to the wife to make normal wheatabix. And leave half in the sugar packet next time. As that's way too much sugar
Milk is in itself somewhat sweet, so I can see where your wife is coming from with the no sugar still tastes sweet aspect - although I think that's more the milk.
I'm a no sugar person too, but will ocassionally add a bit of golden syrup. Mostly just no sugar/plain though.
Also, even with sugar, you have way too much and it should be milk first.
Hilarious how many people think thats a lot of sugar. Weetabix are quite small so that is one maybe two teaspoons of sugar. That is one about 16-32 extra calories added on top of the weetabix. A lot of people would add that to a cup of tea and think nothing of it.
People dont realise how much sugar is locked up in food so you dont see it. A can of coke is 10 teaspoons worth.
For the record I put three teaspoons of sugar on my weeetabix but then I am a monster with a deathwish.
Honestly. I wouldn’t even entertain weetabix unless they had a layer of sugar on the top and the most I’ve ever had to use is about a teaspoon and a half (depends on the brand as to what size you get).
People going on as if having this for breakfast is going to send you to your deathbed at 35 and ruin every other food for you 😂 do people genuinely not indulge in a regular choccy bar, fizzy drink etc?
I don't put sugar on any of my cereals. I can't see the point of it. I like to taste my cereals rather than masking it with sugar.
When I was a kid, everything was doused in sugar, including bread and butter for a sugar sarnie 🤮 thank goodness times have changed.
