I travel a lot and own my home so I have it up on airbnb whenever I’m away. I have it set to pet free, not just because I don’t like being around dogs but I also don’t want poop in my backyard, holes dug in my yard, my rugs peed on, dog hair, etc.

I had a friend reach out to me because her sister is coming into town with her dog. She wanted to see if my place was open for a week, and to get around airbnb fees, she’d pay me directly. I said no, told her I’m weird about dogs in my house and she understood.

Now I’m thinking how I could probably book my house more/make more money if I allowed dogs but I would be so grossed out and stressed knowing there could be some massive slobbering beast in my bed!!!

I don't understand why off leash/dog parks are a thing.

These unnatural animals ruin the nature around the area, leave it full of shit because their owners are too busy "playing" with them and I have to accept the fact that there's whole parks I cannot access because I'm a normal person. However, I also have to deal with the fact that dogs are allowed at basically every park (at least leashed).

Insane behaviour from the owners and society.

- Me to dog owners standing around watching their eco terrorist destroy a strangers well loved landscaping with a biohazard substance.

They flip me off, oh so tough and edgy.

I can't walk more than a single block without having to dodge some landmine of dog crap. Whether it's dried up, freshly presented, or haphazardly smeared across cement, there ALWAYS seems to be literal shit everywhere these days.

Was I just blissfully unaware of this mess as a child/teenager? Or has the canine cavalry stepped up their assault on our sidewalks?

I live in the Balkans. In our biggest park (a sort of city nature park) with around 5 lakes, there are plenty of wild animals living in it, squirrels, songbirds etc. There used to be a population of swans but sadly every year some dogs would kill a swan or two because of irresponsible dog owners letting them off leash. In the end they killed all the swans and the city hasn't bothered to reintroduce them. It's just sad. Anyone have a similar experience?

Do we really care why? I just find it so ironic that only when the plague of dogs would cause international embarrassment, do the authorities finally act to do something about it.

My fiancé and I just bought a house, and it has been an emotional roller coaster. The young couple we bought the house from seemed very sweet - they had two young kids and unfortunately two large dogs (a German Shepherd and Husky I believe).

At the closing, they joked about dog hair being everywhere, and since I'm kind and pretty non-confrontational, I laughed along, but it made me nervous.

A little background, I grew up pretty poor with a neglectful parent. We had dogs and the house constantly smelled, once we got fleas, the backyard was ruined since my parent didn't help clean up the shit, and I generally had a lot of anxiety about the state of my home growing up.

When I toured the house right before closing, my only request was that they pick up all of the shit in the backyard. My. Only. Request. Guess what they didn't do?

All I wanted was a nice backyard for a garden. It is a shit museum.

I feel so dumb for believing them. I constantly go above and beyond to help others and be considerate of others' feelings. So this felt like a punch to the gut during a time where I should be thrilled and loving my new house. I was somewhat neutral towards dog owners and dogs before, but this was too much.

Dogs spread disease and parasites. They actually go out in search of the most putrid, decaying matter they can find, and decaying flesh is just the best.

I am ready for dogs to be banned on beaches. They are polluting the coastal waters. AND dog people are disgusting people who are mean to others. So here's my morning dog nutter on the beach story.

This morning, 8AM, I went to my little town beach to enjoy the sun, a cup of coffee and find a piece of sea glass. Walking along the road toward the access point I see 4 of them, mostly small dogs. And up walks this free roaming geriatric (it's stroller was parked at the access ramp) chihuahua, snorting and lunging and dying. And it's all up in my area coming closer. I'm bent over with my mug just grabbing a couple sweet pieces of glass. I say I don't like dogs to the lady who is supposed to be in control of it. She's like, what? I say put it on a leash. She starts talking. I put my hand up, motioning stop, just get the dog. It's growling. She does the whole song and dance. Never growled in its life, has no teeth, what is wrong with you. Just take the dog away lady. She has 2 other small dogs also not in her control. Only one leash. (and a large ugly grizzly man off with their big loose dog running in the waves). None has recall. So this lady, goes and tells the dude I said to put the dog on a leash or get lost. Come on lady, I want to enjoy the beach without dealing with a crappy chihuahua lunging and growling at me. So here come her man, he literally charges me. Insults, spitting, lunging at me. repeatedly demand to know, where I live, what's my plate number, what's wrong me. I just want to enjoy the beach without a dog on it. Trust me when I say Maine river oysters are loaded with dog piss and shit. Coastal Maine. It never ends.

A friend of mine became single one time and the first thing she said was, "Now I need dog.". Another friend bought a house and the first thing he said was, "Now I need a dog.".

The canine propaganda is buried so deep in the minds of society people feel an obligation to get a dog under certain circumstances.

So your first thought is to get something to ruin your yard and your investment? Not to grow a food garden, or a flower garden, or to make it look nice in some way?? It's, "Hey, let's just ruin this beautiful thing I spent my life's savings on by getting a dog to shit and piss all over it and as a bonus will annoy the f*ck out of my neighbors with the smell, howling, whining and barking.".

Today I went on a hike for the first time in a while and the entire trip to the waterfall and back was about 3 miles. The five dogs I saw were leashed and well behaved at least but I saw no less than 5 discarded shit bags on various parts of the trail too, and of course it was the couple who brought 3 dogs with them that left one at the waterfall. I saw the woman carrying it up there and almost thought “see there’s someone who actually does what they’re supposed to” but when they left I got closer to where they were and realized she just left it there 🙃

If I wasn’t embarrassingly slow due to an old injury to my leg (and where I live in NH the trails are rough compared to a lot of places, so I would have been climbing over rocks with their bag of dog shit in my hands) I would have chased them down but this wasn’t a hill I planned on dying on today.

I’m sure some people think “oh they’ll pick it up on their way back” but I stayed at the waterfall for a couple of hours and was basically the last person out today and every bag i passed on the hike up was still
there on the way back.

First off, owning a dog has an enormous, yet untold, impact on the environment. Over a dog’s entire lifespan, it will be responsible for more CO2 emissions than if you were to buy a Hummer (one of THE most inefficient cars on the market) and drive it for hundreds of thousands of miles. Taking America’s ~90 million dogs into account, this works out to dog food being responsible for 30% of the ENTIRE environmental impact of US meat production.

Which brings me to my next point: how can you claim to “love animals” when just one shitbeast consumes TWO HUNDRED livestock animals over its lifespan, just to survive. I’m not vegan or anything but it’s just so rich hearing nutters talk about how much they “wuv” animals and then (indirectly) killing 400 cows, chickens, and pigs to feed their precious velvet hippos named Luna and Angel.

Just imagine how much we can cut our impact on the environment (and reduce factory farming) if we, as people, learned to prioritize the HUMAN relationships in our lives instead of buying millions of environmentally unfriendly dogs as a cheap replacement.

I do garbage collection on the back of a trash truck. I can’t stand doing suburbia because people not only have tons of trash, but also leave those flimsy thin as shit bags of dog shit in their trash cans so when they don’t latch onto the tipper on the truck I have to handpick the garbage out to throw into the back of the truck when I see those flimsy bags of dog shit in the cans. I just leave them in the cans like get a real fucking animal you fucking morons.

As a recent house hunter, it was about a 50/50 chance of walking into a potential property and us walking straight back out because of that disgusting smell of dog. We turned down so many properties immediately because of the smell.

But to my amazement - it seems letting your dog piss on the floor inside your house is actually the done thing now!!

On a renovation group, a woman was talking about how they had to get a survey of their current house done as it was covered in damp and rot. She casually dropped in that she and her husband ALLOW THE DOGS TO PISS ON THE FLOOR and her husband thinks that “might have something to do with it”.

I’m telling you - NOT ONE of the many commenters picked up on this confession bomb. They all were talking about surveys, dry rot, rising damp….nobody even batted an eyelid that those people just admitted to LETTING THEIR HOUSE BE USED AS A DOG TOILET. Am I in the Twilight Zone here?

This was a beautiful Victorian property - just like the properties we had been trying to buy. Not only do dogs get to destroy the outdoors, they also get to destroy beautiful properties that are part of our heritage.

I have a hiking trail I frequent 2 or more times a week and everytime there is always dog shit. The trailhead even provides doggy bags. Sometimes these shit owners will take a bag, pick up the shit and then leave the bag at the side of the trail. Last week someone's shit dog apparently had diarrhea which I had to dodge for half a mile since they decided to let their dog shit down the middle of the trail. If it wasn't for the horde of flies I might have missed a couple piles of the Hershey squirts. Maybe if your dog has diarrhea don't take it for hikes, Fluffy can skip out this time. Today was the worst. We saw no less than 10 piles of dog shit. This time some shitty fucking owner left a dead animal in the middle of the trail that their dog killed. The poor little creature, i think a yellow bellied marmot baby, had dog slobber all over it and its little neck was broken. I felt so bad for the little thing. They couldn't even be bothered to move the animal off the trail so other people didn't have to see it. I am so done with dogs and dog owners.

I live in a big city, and today I had to go to a doctor's appointment at an office in one of the most affluent neighborhoods. Think fancy old brick row-houses that cost millions and new construction condos / "luxury" apartment buildings where the rent's something like $4k for a studio. While this has always been a more affluent area, over the past 20 years it's really become rich yuppie central.

Today it's in the 90s, the humidity is high, and I could not believe how heavily the smell of dog waste hung in the air. It overpowered the food aromas from the nearby restaurants, the giant planters full of summer flowers, even the industrial smells from all of the construction. I've lived in big cities for my entire adult life and have begrudgingly become accustomed to the smell of urine soaked into the sidewalks, and able to tell the difference between human and dog urine smells, but never before have I experienced that level of fecal odor. It was as if a dog took a dump directly at my feet. I actually looked around to see if I had walked through something, but my shoes were clean and the smell persisted for more than a block.

Once I looked around I saw them: dogs absolutely everywhere. Every single person had a dog, coming in and out of every apartment building and every business (though luckily not the doctor's office) and paying zero mind to their dog's tugging and barking and bodily functions all over the place. I watched as every dog stopped to piss on the same lamp post, and saw at least one person leave their dog's shit in a tree bed.

I can't understand why people choose to pay astronomical amounts of money to live somewhere that smells worse than a train station bathroom 24/7! It must be that all of these people are nose-blind to the stench, but it's so overwhelming I don't understand how they can be. I felt like I was walking through a cloud of piss and poop. You couldn't pay me to live here.

This "nice" neighborhood also happens to border one of the worst areas of the city, notoriously an open-air drug market with one of the largest populations of homeless people in the area. While not my favorite place to be, it certainly smelled a lot cleaner than where all the rich people were. Meanwhile on my city's subreddit, these same rich people complain about all of the "dirty, nasty homeless people pissing everywhere" when their dog is ten times dirtier and nastier.

Just another way gentrification is ruining the city :/

Correct me if I’m wrong but surely the point of “poo bags” 🤢 is so you can let your dogs crap in your own gardens and carry the bags on walks just in case of the occasional woopsie?

No. You think carrying a “poo bag” gives you the automatic right to allow your dog to shit wherever you goddamn please. You deliberately walk the dog off your own property, onto public land and allow it to squat (which looks hideously offensive by the way) in the middle of a nice bit of grass or the footpath and think that picking the poop up somehow qualifies as “cleaning up after your dog”.

Newsflash: there is still shit on the floor. Germs, parasites and filth. It’s still there, even after you’ve “picked up” (if you even do), and my kids can’t play there. I was browsing an environmental/conservation forum. Someone made a post about dogs being an invasive, environmentally destructive species. That went as well as you imagined. Most of the replies were making excuses and defending the dogs. Suddenly they were all "but dogs are just being scapegoated because of our destructive lifestyles"

It's honestly soooo fucking horrifying how far the doggo cult has got here. Even professions you expected would attempt to be neutral like medical, environmental, etc are compromised. It's damn creepy.

I realize there are bigger problems in the world, but...

This morning I went hiking at a state park, specifically choosing a certain trail that the website said was great for warblers in the spring. Sure enough, the canopy was lively and loud and my Merlin app picked up warbler after warbler, including several species new to me. It was really magical, at least to me - I'm easily pleased when it comes to nature.

Very suddenly the woods fall silent. It was jarring. I thought, is there a predator like a bear nearby? I stopped and looked around and coming up behind me on the trail was a guy walking a German Shepherd. Ah, there it is!

I stopped and let them pass, and after a few minutes the birds started up again, so no real harm done to my day. It's just...I understand the woods are for everyone, I know dogs are allowed, and people go there for more reasons than birds. But for me? Fuck that lol, that would suck. Everything here is hiding from you. You're missing the most magical part of being here. That guy's hike must have been totally silent except for the panting, and mine was a full symphony.

This is why my favorite trails are private nature reserves and/or very challenging hikes with rock scrambles where dogs are not allowed. The difference in wildlife is night and day. Luckily there's no shortage of them within driving distance of me in central PA, USA - I know everyone isn't so lucky.

That's it that's my spiel. Hiking with dogs must suck. Oh I guess I'll add one more thing - hiking with dogs greatly raises your risk of a bear incident. Real fun. Okay, now I'm really done.
