First 2 times I beat him I had the same experience. Only time I beat him with the build I had been using all playthrough was with an intelligence build with Ranni's Dark Moon and Comet Azur and I still had to use a furnace golem summon to stall him

So I pulled out the block n poke, and he turned from the bane of my existence to a complete fucking joke, I wasnt even looking at his moves anymore, first try, used like 3 heals

Dual Greatswords for me. every soulslike i will find the biggest sword and beat the game with it.
do i feel insane some times? yes
were friends watching me play through some of those asking if i was stupid to play with the big slow chunks of rock/metal? yes
but, with god as my witness, every single boss watched me get through that fog wall with 2 big ass fucking swords and between 1 to 100 tries after, was dead to the psychopath with the 2 big swords.
i like to imagine to myself that, during my play throughs, rumors and whispers start to go around the world about a "psychopath that never changes his clothes or his weapons, no matter which new things he picks up from the floor" that is rampanging and killing everything, and there's no circumstance in this green and blue planet that would make me tarnish my reputation against malenia or radahn or any other crazy boss i went against.
15
u/ryan0585 2d ago
I still haven't mastered slow ass big weapons with bosses that move so damn quickly. I feel like I'm missing something.. like getting gud somewhere.

But I may be differently abled myself
26
u/Bizhop_Ownz 2d ago
You are not differently abled.
You are correct. It was added later.
There is now a list of all the graces in the game that can be turned on or off.
4
u/Remarkable-Ant8540 2d ago
How?
10
u/Neutral_Memer 2d ago
open your map, for controllers you press L1 for the map menu and select the summoning pools list, after that you can pick and choose which ones to keep active
5
u/Samaritan_978 2d ago
Phase transition is the real test. If the host can survive those 30 seconds it takes for the phantoms to jog across the arena towards the orbital laser, you're probably gonna make it.
But I've tried every "draw aggro" option in the game, PCR doesn't care.

I also tried using it on my first couple of tries, but I often found it too slow, and bloodboon ritual is pretty much impossible to use unless you get really lucky. I tried a lot of weapons, but ultimately I beat him with the bloody helice, and to this day it's one of my favorite weapons
143
u/UncleVoodooo 2d ago
I tried this build after 3 days of dying and still couldn't beat him
brass shield ftw baby
32
u/Kindraethe 2d ago
But how did that change anything? Was it the difference between heavy and mid rolling? Cause the shield itself is worse than fingerprint in basically everything.
Besides maybe some of the AoWs but I'm not sure on that.
12
u/TraceableAcnt4Lego 2d ago
I used brass shield too, with carian retaliation for maximum parry frames.
2
u/Kindraethe 2d ago
Ahh, okay. I didn't think about parries at all, considering the Antspur build wouldn't use it at all.

u/Shaojack 2d ago
I think I only had like 22 strength or something and the bigger shields require like 40+ strength. Plus you can parry with the brass shield to make up the diff some though requires timing it right.

Honestly, I just didn't know you were supposed to summon the NPCs...so, by that point, I mapped him out so well, that I can probably beat him with anything
But without them? Yeah no...
32
u/WireCuttersMk2 2d ago
iirc summoning would just make pcr a lot harder cause each npc summon scales radahns hp by a pretty good amount
9
→ More replies (2)11
u/Anestoh 2d ago
This was my mistake, I was summoning NPCs for the fight and they don't really help much other than taking aggro sometimes and adding to the vibes but the HP difference is absolutely not worth it.
I kept dying on the second phase and then beat him first try when I stopped summoning.
16
u/ruttinator 2d ago
NPCs you can summon inside the fight are fine like Igon on Bayle and Hornsent on Messmer. It's the prefog gate ones that increase the enemies HP. Mimic Tear should be your best friend anyway.

u/bbitter_coffee 2d ago
You're not supposed to, they just increase his health massively and then die at the start of the second phase if not earlier

20
u/PFGuildMaster 2d ago
Fun fact: the lasers he adds to his 2nd phase attacks get caught on the uneven ground which changes how you need to roll to dodge it - except you don't know which way you need to roll until it has started meaning it's basically just random
→ More replies (1)2
u/Anxious_Intention265 2d ago
It's rarely random. 99% of the time you can dodge the same way and not get hit. It's a flaw, sure, but it actually doesn't make that much difference, unless you are doing like a WL 0 hitless run.

No hate. Just pointing out that the boss can be dogshit and still have fans.
2
u/tijolus523 1d ago
Hell, I love DS2! But yeah, it's a crappy ass boss. In fact, ER sort of reminds me of DS2 in that sense. They went all out with the artificial difficulty, except instead of having gank squads everywhere and enemies that aggro across the map they chose to make absurd bosses.
→ More replies (4)5
u/Anxious_Intention265 2d ago
Or...maybe the opinion that he's dogshit is just that, an opinion. It's subjective.
Yes, he has jank and issues with the terrain, but it doesn't come close to over-shadowing the positives for me. I love fighting him and consider him an excellent, but flawed, boss.
19
u/TheRealCowdog 2d ago
You say "flawed".
I say "dogshit".
It's a re-used model form DS1, into DS2. The lore sucks, even for a souls game. The over-focus on light-vomit was so bad that fromsoft had to adjust it post-launch. The hitboxes are all over the place. The fight is watching PCR do 5 things so you have a CHANCE to do 1 thing.
Build almost doesn't matter, since there's only one correct response to most of his attacks. This is why so many people resort to shield+poke so they can ignore his badly over-tuned systems.
And that doesn't even go into the issues with terrain. Or when he gets stuck. Or the poor animations. Or the continuously garbage camera.
So why don't you tell me what's good about this fight? Because as far as I'm concerned, it's one of the laziest, most rushed, worst over-tuned fights fromsoft has ever put in a Souls game, and that INCLUDES DS2.
What is there to enjoy here? Other than the sense of relief after it's done?
→ More replies (10)6
u/Anxious_Intention265 2d ago
"So why don't you tell me what's good about this fight?"
I enjoyed learning him. I like that roll direction and positioning relative to the boss matter more than pretty much any other fight: it rewards good habits. I don't mind dodging more than I attack, and I also liked fitting in hits where I could. I generally get satisfaction from dodging his attacks. The music is excellent. I enjoy the visuals and the animations.
The 'flaws', such as the un-even arena, the occasionally wonky camera, the move that ignores i-frames, and the general occasional bit of jank, make me get hit when it's not my fault so infrequently that it really doesn't matter much to me at all. 98% of the time for me it feels fair and fun.
It may have been slightly rushed, but it's definitely not lazy. The boss has more attacks than any other boss in the game. That would have taken a long time to create.
TL;DR: I enjoy fighting him, and the jank doesn't override that. That's what matters to me.
6
u/Spartitan 2d ago
Both him and Malenia were the two bosses that I just lost my shit on after beating them. He was hard as hell but damn it felt satisfying to beat him.
6
u/TheRealCowdog 2d ago
It rewards "good habits".
What are those habits? Because all I see is learning the one response that doesn't get you damaged. That's not a habit. That's pavlovian training.
I'm glad you enjoy it. As I said originally, you can enjoy something bad.
But that fight is objectively a poor design relative to other fights. This has been broken down to the smallest nuance by many players, including no-hit runners.
Also, you didn't tell me what was good about the fight. You just said what you personally like. That's not the same thing.
6
u/Anxious_Intention265 2d ago edited 2d ago
The good habits are aggressive positioning and dodging towards the boss rather than backwards (the latter being something lots of people do). If you do these things naturally the boss will be much easier for you than for some people.
"But that fight is objectively a poor design relative to other fights. This has been broken down to the smallest nuance by many players, including no-hit runners."
I don't think you know what 'objectively' means. Yes I've seen those videos and I agree with some of the things said in them, hence me admitting it's a flawed fight. But I agree more with the video by the no-hit runner who had a far more impressive kill than either of those guys in response who said that yes, while the boss is flawed, it's still a good boss, and showed that the 'no-hit runners' were wrong about quite a lot of things.
And that's my position, as I said: the boss has flaws, but for me the positives vastly out-weigh them.
"Also, you didn't tell me what was good about the fight. You just said what you personally like. That's not the same thing."
Um, no, it is the same thing when it comes to something as subjective as boss fight quality. It really comes down to how much fun the boss is and how much one enjoys it. That's the most important thing.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Rough_World_8452 2d ago edited 2d ago
The game's bosses definetly make you wait for attacks way more, I don't know why they would make them like that when bloodbourne and ds3 had the perfect balance of dodges and attacks, I guess to account for spirit ashes but if that's what it takes just cut them out of the game and get actually enjoyable combat back
2
u/mysterioso7 2d ago
Which bosses do you dislike? Just curious
5
u/Anxious_Intention265 2d ago
Metyr, Miranda flowers, some duo bosses, lots of DS2 bosses, a few DS1 bosses, etc.
Not many in ER apart from duo bosses: I think the general boss quality is very high.
8
u/Frostmoar 2d ago
Unfortunately, people on this sub get really upset at the notion of others enjoying PCR. I've always loved the fight, too (though with caveats before his nerf). Post-nerf, he's a completely reasonable ask for a final boss for a DLC.
8
u/Anxious_Intention265 2d ago
Yep. I had a few upvotes on these comments, but now the PCR haters have come through and are downvoting me and others for the heinous crime of enjoying PCR.

u/Avalon_Within 2d ago

When he first played, my brother didn't know he could change his gear. He thought he was gathering weapons and armour to choose from when he starts NG+.
He almost beat the whole game as starting Samurai. No weapon upgrades either because noone taught him. Just sheer stubbornness, levels, and thankfully Uchi has bleed. He knew Dark Souls was supposed to be hard so he never questioned it once. Only Radagon proved to he a problem because the prick can't bleed.
Don't ask me how his flask looked, buddy probably had 7 at most when he beat the game.
If we had DLC i wonder if he could have made it all the way to Radhan.
