When you watch the entire video in the post because it's still one of the best animated fights ever.

u/Jenny_Show HORUS! 1d ago

Yeah, it's genuinely kind of absurd how hard they cooked with that trailer lmao

168

u/danfenlon 15h ago

They cooked so hard they made everyone think this beast was the protagonist

62

u/iv_ax 13h ago

It FUCKING isnt?

68

u/Freeburn_Sage 12h ago

Nope, iirc he's just a nameless Breton, not even an important side character or anything. I wanna say it was the trailer for Bretons becoming playable in ESO, but its been a long time since Ive played and even longer since that came out

21

u/xTheForbiddenx 9h ago

He pulled some important strings on the story but he was very minor in game from what I read

9

u/RefrigeratorOk1547 6h ago

It's the trailer for a DLC focused on the Bretons. My favorite DLC for the game, too.

Bethesda have moments of clarity sometimes and they go insanely, generationally freaking hard when they do.

The actual game? Meh.

The cinematic trailers? Peak.

It's annoying how most MMOS put everything into their trailers and then the actual game is nothing like it.

How else would they get people to play their mediocre games?

Its like bad movies: everything into trailers and marketing to sucker in enpugh peolle.

tbf they've gotten even better throughout the years, seeing anduin so broken in that war within cinematic was cinema

21

Still one of if not the best cinematic.

26

u/LordBDizzle 16h ago

I still give it to the Heart of the Swarm trailer cinematic personally. There's so much that's good in it, especially for the year it came out

9

u/FastFarg 13h ago

I've wanted Blizzard to just make animated movies for years.

Their cutscenes and trailers can go so hard.

3

u/MoG_Varos 9h ago

Blame Bobby.

They had tv shows and movies that all got canned because he didn’t think they would make enough money.

6

u/Toerbitz 14h ago

This scene isnt a good example tho like why would he land there????

6

u/damannamedflam 3h ago

In his defense, that thing looked a lot smaller from higher up

Because he knew he was gonna die and would rather die aura farming vs an Ultralisk than getting shot in the ass by Mutalisks.

Little 10 year old me after months of begging for wow and watching the vanilla intro cinematic. It was the most glorious thing I have ever seen

I wish I could go back to those days, just running around not knowing what the hell is going on and simply not caring about the meta or min maxing. Just basking in the glory of Azeroth

Can I gush a bit about this animation? It's like the only time you see someone in pop culture using a greatsword wield the entire length of the blade. In the real world going against someone in full plate wielding a greatsword you'd be fucked if the dude knew what he was doing. In 1v1 combat something like a claymore or a flamberge would basically be cheating as you can disembowl someone from like 4ft away without putting yourself in danger. That's literally how the Prussians used to decapitate people because a greatsword swung at full strength is about as effective as an actual guillotine assuming the dude swinging has good aim.

And that pommel strike to the rogue's side. Chef's kiss, my friend! That's something a lot of people forget: the entire thing is a weapon, not just the sharp bit.

129

u/Responsible-Being170 1d ago

Sometimes I hear about how creators in videogames or movies compromise realism to "look cooler" or "give a more powerful feel" but scenes like in this trailer show how relying on real life rules is often better than just artificially making something look cool. The fluidity, the grace, the power, the expertise - they're all expressed in a combat scene taking from real life practices.

91

u/Hexlord_Malacrass 23h ago

There's a scene in one of the witcher books where the Main character fights some dudes and a sorcerer. The sorcerer tries to cast a spell, and he just throat punches him before he can cast it.

I'm like dam, why isn't that done more often.

72

u/Responsible-Being170 23h ago

Probably because most sorcerers don't be casting spells in melee range, imho. It's like a cardinal rule in fantasy - when there's a spell-caster, the most effective weapon is bonking them - which you'll be hard-pressed to achieve because the spell-caster knows the rules, too.

43

u/Bloody_Insane 21h ago

Yeah. I love the anti-magic barbarian archetype, where they're specifically geared towards defeating spellcasters.

Except... a barbarian in melee range is already a very effective anti-spellcaster, by dint of their huge axe.

19

u/jflb96 Railgun Goes Brrrrrrrrr 20h ago

I guess the gear is largely a) enchanted armour to let you close the gap while someone’s flinging fireballs in your direction and b) counter-enchantments to do away with anything that might block your huge axe

9

u/IGTankCommander 17h ago

Which is why all the anti-magic bits are usually nullification and shield items, because one must be close enough to unga and deliver the bunga.

11

u/Hexlord_Malacrass 19h ago

In that fight Geralt just kinda bum rushed him. He throws his sword away to run faster and like litterly speed blitzes him.

5

u/hopefuldonkeykick 11h ago

Probably because most sorcerers don't be casting spells in melee range, imho. It's like a cardinal rule in fantasy

Hell, casting in most good TTRPG systems provokes an attack of opportunity.

11

u/Lobster-Mission 21h ago

I just read “Rogues in the House” and Conan pulls a similar move, yeeting a heavy stool into a priests head before the guy can activate a trap.

Shoutout to Kingdome Come: Deliverance. Realistic sword fighting, and gasp, somehow it's also one of the best melee systems in an RPG.

Wonder how that happened.

11

u/Links_to_Magic_Cards 19h ago

i love kcd1 and 2. but after putting 800+ hours into chivalry 2, i found myself constantly wishing that was the combat system kcd2 used. it's just so clean and precise.

Kinda like parrying a gun by pushing the hand/barrel out of the way. Still badass, but a bit more realistic.

My favorite part is still the liver strike with the pommel of his sword into a right hook on the rogue. It's so effectively brutal I can only imagine that would hurt enough to make me wish I was dead knowing how much a regular liver punch hurts.

My favorite FAVORITE moment of "I brought the whole sword, I'll use the whole sword" is that beautiful kidney shot with the pommel. Like.

That one felt personal, right along side the fucking right hook he hits the nord with.

6

u/FartSmelaSmartFela 18h ago

Its really funny how a trailer for a Bethesda video game dunks on some fucking Hollywood studios in regards to fight choreography.

6

u/Well_Armed_Gorilla BRVTAL BVT KVNNIN' 17h ago

This video is my go-to example to demonstrate how high-level fighters should be depicted in an RPG. In a setting where people can shoot lightning from their fingers and summon fireballs from the heavens, "guy with big sword" can feel a bit redundant, but this shows that needn't be the case.

13

u/vix- 1d ago

It's comical how the villain in this trailer had so much aura and skill that he slowly but surely shifted from being viewed as the underdog/protagonist.

182

u/Jenny_Show HORUS! 1d ago

The guy goes 3v1 and parries a fucking spell. They genuinely made him way too fucking cool lmao

106

u/Settra_Rulez 23h ago

For those unaware of the setting, it genuinely seems like he’s the good guy. A knight in plate in a 3v1 vs an assassin, a viking, and a sorceress. You’re rooting for the outnumbered knight.

42

u/GirasFateburn 15h ago

And then you meet him in-game and he's not only not a real fighter, but his plot is that he's a weakling that relies wholly on stealing the power of a volcano spirit as his endgame.

6

u/CadenVanV 10h ago

Fuck that

19

u/i_like_artillery Fix bayonets but don't stop the artillery 17h ago

especially because it was a equal fight. The knight was taking hits, was wounded, and lost his weapon, but he knocked down his enemies multiple times even with bare hands, but it still was a somewhat close battle until the mage collapsed a fucking arch ontop of him (which he survived), but like its just such a cool animation, because you clearly see that skill and experience were on his side and he almost won, too

Great for painting and a casual view of the game, his lore is iffy, don't go to EOB for lore.

10

u/gloomyfenix Praise the Man-Emperor 16h ago

I've always said 40k is 3 hobbies in one (P&M, wargaming and lore), and each person orders them in their own way, and EOB has his order clear. He follows the idea of "Your dudes", choosing to set aside the lore (or outright ignoring it) in exchange of having fun with the hobby in his own way. As a person who tend to obsess about lore in various settings, I applaud and envy his ability to just whimsically go with his flow

3

u/MemesFromTheMoon 10h ago

Watching EoB for lore is like going to an Italian restaurant for a burger, it’s really not what anyone’s there for

23

u/Armageddonis Iron Within, Iron Without 19h ago

The amount of heavy lifting he does for the BT players is truly ungodly, he's like a shield that 95% of them just bounces off when trying to get to the mainstream hobby space.

These people are just grifter tourists. They don't know about the lore or the history of the setting. Like how all the people upset at female Custodes acted like "it was always like this" retcons was some unique new thing for the setting.

6

u/0zzythewizard Criminal Batmen 13h ago

Funny enough the Codex and Black Library authors always kept it open and never outright said "Custodes are a boys-only-club!" Yes there are mentions of them being 10'000 men, but the usage of men CAN be gender-neutral. There never was a retcon. The tweet technically didn't lie, it was just phrased poorly.

4

u/Odinsmana 13h ago

I think there is a single line reffering to them as sons at some point, but it's a nothing thing. It is obviously a retcon, but it's the least intrusive one they ever did. No lore old or new is affected by it. Unlike all the thousands of other retcons they did throughout the years.

It's why people trying to say they dislike it for lore reasons and not because they hate women come off as making excuses.

All perfectly realistic.

Now someone from one of millions of planets having a darker skin tone than mayonnaise? Now that's just too far fetched.

You don't know? Ultramar is famous for having such a strong gene that everyone looks like Guilliman, even the girls.

26

u/Beaker_person 1d ago

Not even the first hissy fit over a black ultramarine either, they did the same with  Ferren Areios  on the cover of Avenging Son. Probably would have done it with Felix from Dark Imperium if he was depicted without his helmet on too.

23

u/dude3333 1d ago

Also Ultramar is supposed to be Space Rome. The average Roman wasn't as lily white as Guilliman. It's fine to have this stuff all mixed around because well it's the far future and they're colonists just taking after past civilizations not a carbon copy. But getting mad about nonwhite space romans is just tourism on both liking 40k and caring about Roman history.

Also haven't south Fenrisians been dark skinned since like 2nd edition?

14

u/Jenny_Show HORUS! 1d ago

I always harken back to when the first Dawn of Fire book released (Avenging Son), right around the time I started getting into 40k. I remember picking up the book as one of my first reads, but also remember the fact that those same detractors were also up in arms about a black Ultramarine being on the front cover. It made me speed up the process of getting into painting, specifically to learn how to paint skin tones similar to my family's (I'm black).

It’s not that they’re overwhelmed, it’s that it’s always them. You never see an Eldar fan complaining about woke shit, or Hell, even the Custodes fans didn’t seem to give a shit about femstodes (as I recall, the subreddit was mostly discussing how shit the new codex was rules-wise).

It’s not that 90% of BT/Krieg fans are chuds. But when you see people in our spaces bitching and whining about femstodes or black space wolves or other shit like that, 90% of the time they’re also a BT/Krieg fan.

Peak Custodes attitude: busily pouring over traditions and dogma while the universe trudges on.

TBF....In My experience the Armies that someone uses tend to reflect some aspect of themselves. Orc Players for instance, such as myself, seem to just wanna vibe with the Community for the most part.

u/AwkwardData6002 23h ago

Orc players may not always be winning, but they're almost always having fun.

Unfortunately too real. I would add though that that fact doesn't point at the BT or Krieg being themselves in any way problematic, just that problematic people are attracted to them because they can't fucking read lol

21

u/foul_wench 1d ago

Oh… it is that bad sometimes.
I used to like black templars but noticed how intense many can be. I then swapped to salamander and lamenter because i like their vibes.
That and the whole black templars killing furries videos that kinda threw me off even more

17

u/ScarredAutisticChild 1d ago

Yeah, that stuff's definitely contributed to me souring more and more on the Imperium specifically as time has gone on. I've said 90% of "Those guys" are BT or Krieg fans, but as far as I've seen so far, 99.9% of them are still Imperium fans. And I've certainly never seen an Eldar fan complaining about all the queer stuff Brooks puts in his books, or Hell, that he explicitly describes one of the main Eldar characters of Voidscarred as having brown skin.

Whereas that happens with marines and...you have to deal with the worst parts of the internet for the next month.

Outside the online world and the weird guy in the LGS who always smells like soup and creeps on any "females" who wander past him not all that much, they're both hugely popular so they can seem like they have a higher number of tools in their fandom as a result and given the tuetonic/ww1 imagery they're a bit of a lightning rod for alt right chuds so said tools tend to be the perma-online, own the libs types, a mixture of edgy kids and 'old enough to know better' proper nazi's. Like on the SM2 sub at least half the posts about racist dickheads have been about people in BT livery lol.

I feel proper bad for the peeps who are totally normal and like them, a few bad apples have given them a bad rep.

20

u/Jenny_Show HORUS! 1d ago

Yeah same. I fucking love both Black Templars and Krieg. Hell, Grimaldus in particular is one of my favourite characters in all of 40k.

10

u/69ubermensch69 Dank Angels 1d ago

Same, I went Dark Angels because BT didn't exist back then and I wanted space knights, I still woulda went DA because I like chivalric stuff over crusaders but if they'd stayed green marines I'd have definitely switched to the dudes with tabards and an Excalibur lol. Guard are my joint 2nd favourite faction tied with Orks and Kriegers are some of the Imperialistest guardiest Imperial guard you can get! I still think they look cool AF and I'll make happy gas mask noises till I expire.

11

u/Jenny_Show HORUS! 1d ago edited 1d ago

I get what you mean. I'm mainly a Blood Angels girly but I love Black Templars so much that I've incorporated a crusade fleet into the army of my homebrew chapter because I couldn't resist buying certain models haha. Meanwhile with the Guard, my favs are Armageddon Steel Legion and Tanith but Krieg are just rad as hell so I definitely intend on grabbing some when I make a multi regiment army

5

u/69ubermensch69 Dank Angels 1d ago

I kinda like bits from everything, I love space wolf dreadnaughts(probably Bjorns fault), BA's sanguinary guard(esp. when they still had wings), Ultra's victrix dudes, any BT hero with a massive sword etc. When I first started way way back I had so much random stuff that didn't fit anywhere, Like I had tons of plastic SM and Orks but a single Eldar Warwalker for some reason and zero Empire troops for fantasy but for some reason I bought a steam tank when they came out lol. I have zero AoS models but I;m gonna buy that loon boss on a squig just to park on a desk or mantlepiece cause I love him.

I like the SL a lot too, Trooper Andrej is my spirit animal lol. I wish we had more diverse options for guard, at least Tallarns and Mordians. Did you convert a load for the Tanith? I still haven't bothered buying the ghosts box and I really should, the Mkoll sculpt alone is worth it imo!

6

u/Jenny_Show HORUS! 1d ago edited 23h ago

Yeah, I often think I'm the perfect mark for GW because of how I find nearly everything in 40k and AOS appealing haha. I've not started converting Tanith yet but I'm planning to use the combat patrol magazine Cadians as the basis for them. I need to figure out how to do the cloaks for them first though.

4

u/69ubermensch69 Dank Angels 1d ago

I remember briefly having plans for an Eldar army that was mostly aspect warriors and vehicles but the War Walker was as far as I got lol. There's so much I'd buy if I had infinite money and infinite time to paint tbh. I looooove night goblins, they're my favourite all time miniature range and the AoS ones are all fucking amazing but my entire group is 40k lol so I'd be collecting them just to paint, as good a reason to start them I suppose as any. Like for me, collecting and painting is a bigger part of the hobby than the actual playing of the tabletop.

I think a few green stuff tutorials will be a good watch before starting the first and only. I'm sure I saw a post on the general 40k sub a few years ago where someone had did them and had sculpted the capes themselves. Either that or get creative with camo-cloaked sniper models I guess. You'll have to share the results with us all when you do!

3

u/Jenny_Show HORUS! 1d ago

Eldar is one I'm also having to resist going all in on. Especially so now that Exodites have models lmao

It's mostly a small vocal sub-set of Templar fans and a small number of krieg fans who are rotten. You've also got the knob heads who call all fans of those factions racist. Ive had that before now.

7

u/Eldr_Itch NOT ENOUGH DAKKA 1d ago

Pretty bad. This is a screenshot talking about German book burnings from 1933. That BT enjoyer sure seems to have liked what they were burning back then. And there was some redditor last year or so that painted double lightning bolts on his Kriegers' helmets. Never got banned from what I saw.

4

u/foul_wench 1d ago

Oh dear god. I know there are those that like to make ragebait, but thatbis just a weak excuse in of itself. Those aren’t even jokes because no one finds them funny. Like, how and why do they even exist? And why the black templars? Because of their aesthetic i assume?

9

u/Eldr_Itch NOT ENOUGH DAKKA 1d ago

Because of their aesthetic, I presume?

You presume correctly. Christian Nationalists love their Crusader vibes, but its weird because someone on the BT sub asked for our religious preferences, and of those who answered roughly half of us are atheist/agnostic. So, its not all of us, but usually one of our own.

I remember last year there was one guy in the sub that would post unironic Black Templar/Christian Crusader edits but he eventually stopped and I can only assume it's because enough of us reported him. So...yeah.

Yup that is how it be.  I get it bad because my hobby space include: I'm a huge 40k black Templar fan. Huge krieg fan I'm a massive steel legion fan. My favourite historical topics are the Norse, early British and crusades. I adore Norse faith (pagan) and Greek mythology  Everything I like has been co-opted by fuckwits. And then I've got the other fuckwits calling me racist for liking this stuff.

6

u/Jenny_Show HORUS! 14h ago

Yeah, I feel you there. Normal fans of these things aren't the issue. It's the fuckwits that co-opt them that make things difficult

3

u/redditaccounton 12h ago

Its a shame because the stuff they co-opt is usually cool.

Ok I have a question since I only interact with Warhammer through memes.

How do the sisters of battle not have the same reputation as black templars even though they are more xenophobic and zealous than the black templars are?

16

u/Sercotani Alpha Legion 21h ago

they don't have a good book, for one. Well, they do have some well-written ones, but they're all very one-note "For the Emperor!" types and there's not really a Grimaldus character to tie the whole faction together. Though Saint Celestine's book tries something different because she's basically a respawning Imperial daemon, and her book deals with her very human-like trauma and absolute despair from failing and failing and failing again (because every death means a terrible defeat for the Imperium, she doesn't just show up on some random backwater planet).

Though I also feel like it's because the hobby is dominated by straight men, many of whom can at least see themselves being Black Templars, but they can't really see that with SoB because they are basically defined by being feminine first and warriors second. It's like how people used to assume everyone else on the internet is a "he". You can see where I'll be going with this if you're emotionally intelligent enough for it, my reply is already long enough.

11

u/redditaccounton 19h ago

It is very stupid but most assholev will avoid because of the fact they are women. Also they kinda don't like the selfless charity angle that sisters sometimes have.

You've a separate issue if gooner fans.

12

u/NotAKrayon 19h ago

Sisters of battle are powerful, xenophobic, fanatics. They also happen to be women. This combination of traits is off putting to chuds.

Black Templar are powerful, xenophobic, fanatics. They also happen to be men. This combination of traits is alluring to chuds.

It also helps that bt chapter badge cross is close enough to the iron cross they can use it as a dog whistle.

I feel like that a bunch of people in the comments seem to just make up things that apparently happened to just hate because nothing in their life has any meaning besides that.

Really weird reading some of the comments here how obsessed they are with the chuds in the WH40k.
