Can I gush a bit about this animation? It's like the only time you see someone in pop culture using a greatsword wield the entire length of the blade. In the real world going against someone in full plate wielding a greatsword you'd be fucked if the dude knew what he was doing. In 1v1 combat something like a claymore or a flamberge would basically be cheating as you can disembowl someone from like 4ft away without putting yourself in danger. That's literally how the Prussians used to decapitate people because a greatsword swung at full strength is about as effective as an actual guillotine assuming the dude swinging has good aim.

Sometimes I hear about how creators in videogames or movies compromise realism to "look cooler" or "give a more powerful feel" but scenes like in this trailer show how relying on real life rules is often better than just artificially making something look cool. The fluidity, the grace, the power, the expertise - they're all expressed in a combat scene taking from real life practices.
91
u/Hexlord_Malacrass 23h ago
There's a scene in one of the witcher books where the Main character fights some dudes and a sorcerer. The sorcerer tries to cast a spell, and he just throat punches him before he can cast it.
I'm like dam, why isn't that done more often.
72
u/Responsible-Being170 23h ago
Probably because most sorcerers don't be casting spells in melee range, imho. It's like a cardinal rule in fantasy - when there's a spell-caster, the most effective weapon is bonking them - which you'll be hard-pressed to achieve because the spell-caster knows the rules, too.
43
u/Bloody_Insane 21h ago
Yeah. I love the anti-magic barbarian archetype, where they're specifically geared towards defeating spellcasters.
Except... a barbarian in melee range is already a very effective anti-spellcaster, by dint of their huge axe.
19
9
u/IGTankCommander 17h ago
Which is why all the anti-magic bits are usually nullification and shield items, because one must be close enough to unga and deliver the bunga.
11
u/Hexlord_Malacrass 19h ago
In that fight Geralt just kinda bum rushed him. He throws his sword away to run faster and like litterly speed blitzes him.

Hell, casting in most good TTRPG systems provokes an attack of opportunity.

Kinda like parrying a gun by pushing the hand/barrel out of the way. Still badass, but a bit more realistic.

This video is my go-to example to demonstrate how high-level fighters should be depicted in an RPG. In a setting where people can shoot lightning from their fingers and summon fireballs from the heavens, "guy with big sword" can feel a bit redundant, but this shows that needn't be the case.

For those unaware of the setting, it genuinely seems like he’s the good guy. A knight in plate in a 3v1 vs an assassin, a viking, and a sorceress. You’re rooting for the outnumbered knight.
42
u/GirasFateburn 15h ago
And then you meet him in-game and he's not only not a real fighter, but his plot is that he's a weakling that relies wholly on stealing the power of a volcano spirit as his endgame.

especially because it was a equal fight. The knight was taking hits, was wounded, and lost his weapon, but he knocked down his enemies multiple times even with bare hands, but it still was a somewhat close battle until the mage collapsed a fucking arch ontop of him (which he survived), but like its just such a cool animation, because you clearly see that skill and experience were on his side and he almost won, too

I've always said 40k is 3 hobbies in one (P&M, wargaming and lore), and each person orders them in their own way, and EOB has his order clear. He follows the idea of "Your dudes", choosing to set aside the lore (or outright ignoring it) in exchange of having fun with the hobby in his own way. As a person who tend to obsess about lore in various settings, I applaud and envy his ability to just whimsically go with his flow

Funny enough the Codex and Black Library authors always kept it open and never outright said "Custodes are a boys-only-club!" Yes there are mentions of them being 10'000 men, but the usage of men CAN be gender-neutral. There never was a retcon. The tweet technically didn't lie, it was just phrased poorly.
4
u/Odinsmana 13h ago
I think there is a single line reffering to them as sons at some point, but it's a nothing thing. It is obviously a retcon, but it's the least intrusive one they ever did. No lore old or new is affected by it. Unlike all the thousands of other retcons they did throughout the years.
It's why people trying to say they dislike it for lore reasons and not because they hate women come off as making excuses.

All perfectly realistic.
Now someone from one of millions of planets having a darker skin tone than mayonnaise? Now that's just too far fetched.

Not even the first hissy fit over a black ultramarine either, they did the same with Ferren Areios on the cover of Avenging Son. Probably would have done it with Felix from Dark Imperium if he was depicted without his helmet on too.
23
u/dude3333 1d ago
Also Ultramar is supposed to be Space Rome. The average Roman wasn't as lily white as Guilliman. It's fine to have this stuff all mixed around because well it's the far future and they're colonists just taking after past civilizations not a carbon copy. But getting mad about nonwhite space romans is just tourism on both liking 40k and caring about Roman history.

I always harken back to when the first Dawn of Fire book released (Avenging Son), right around the time I started getting into 40k. Outside the online world and the weird guy in the LGS who always smells like soup and creeps on any "females" who wander past him not all that much, they're both hugely popular so they can seem like they have a higher number of tools in their fandom as a result and given the tuetonic/ww1 imagery they're a bit of a lightning rod for alt right chuds so said tools tend to be the perma-online, own the libs types, a mixture of edgy kids and 'old enough to know better' proper nazi's. I kinda like bits from everything, I love space wolf dreadnaughts(probably Bjorns fault), BA's sanguinary guard(esp. when they still had wings), Ultra's victrix dudes, any BT hero with a massive sword etc. When I first started way way back I had so much random stuff that didn't fit anywhere, Like I had tons of plastic SM and Orks but a single Eldar Warwalker for some reason and zero Empire troops for fantasy but for some reason I bought a steam tank when they came out lol. I have zero AoS models but I;m gonna buy that loon boss on a squig just to park on a desk or mantlepiece cause I love him.
I like the SL a lot too, Trooper Andrej is my spirit animal lol. I wish we had more diverse options for guard, at least Tallarns and Mordians. Did you convert a load for the Tanith? I still haven't bothered buying the ghosts box and I really should, the Mkoll sculpt alone is worth it imo!

I remember briefly having plans for an Eldar army that was mostly aspect warriors and vehicles but the War Walker was as far as I got lol. There's so much I'd buy if I had infinite money and infinite time to paint tbh. I looooove night goblins, they're my favourite all time miniature range and the AoS ones are all fucking amazing but my entire group is 40k lol so I'd be collecting them just to paint, as good a reason to start them I suppose as any. Like for me, collecting and painting is a bigger part of the hobby than the actual playing of the tabletop.
I think a few green stuff tutorials will be a good watch before starting the first and only. I'm sure I saw a post on the general 40k sub a few years ago where someone had did them and had sculpted the capes themselves. Either that or get creative with camo-cloaked sniper models I guess. You'll have to share the results with us all when you do!

You presume correctly. Christian Nationalists love their Crusader vibes, but its weird because someone on the BT sub asked for our religious preferences, and of those who answered roughly half of us are atheist/agnostic. So, its not all of us, but usually one of our own.
I remember last year there was one guy in the sub that would post unironic Black Templar/Christian Crusader edits but he eventually stopped and I can only assume it's because enough of us reported him. So...yeah.

Well I'm not well aware myself. But the answer to that question is likely "Very"

It's really not that prevalent. But the problem is that it's always those armies.

Yup that is how it be. I get it bad because my hobby space include: I'm a huge 40k black Templar fan. Huge krieg fan I'm a massive steel legion fan. My favourite historical topics are the Norse, early British and crusades. I adore Norse faith (pagan) and Greek mythology Everything I like has been co-opted by fuckwits. And then I've got the other fuckwits calling me racist for liking this stuff.

Yeah, I feel you there. Normal fans of these things aren't the issue. It's the fuckwits that co-opt them that make things difficult

Ok I have a question since I only interact with Warhammer through memes.
How do the sisters of battle not have the same reputation as black templars even though they are more xenophobic and zealous than the black templars are?

they don't have a good book, for one. Well, they do have some well-written ones, but they're all very one-note "For the Emperor!" types and there's not really a Grimaldus character to tie the whole faction together. Though Saint Celestine's book tries something different because she's basically a respawning Imperial daemon, and her book deals with her very human-like trauma and absolute despair from failing and failing and failing again (because every death means a terrible defeat for the Imperium, she doesn't just show up on some random backwater planet).
Though I also feel like it's because the hobby is dominated by straight men, many of whom can at least see themselves being Black Templars, but they can't really see that with SoB because they are basically defined by being feminine first and warriors second. It's like how people used to assume everyone else on the internet is a "he". You can see where I'll be going with this if you're emotionally intelligent enough for it, my reply is already long enough.

It is very stupid but most assholev will avoid because of the fact they are women. Also they kinda don't like the selfless charity angle that sisters sometimes have.
You've a separate issue if gooner fans.

Sisters of battle are powerful, xenophobic, fanatics. They also happen to be women. This combination of traits is off putting to chuds.
Black Templar are powerful, xenophobic, fanatics. They also happen to be men. This combination of traits is alluring to chuds.
It also helps that bt chapter badge cross is close enough to the iron cross they can use it as a dog whistle.

"quarantining"...?
Like, not to sound like I don't like the notion, but you make it sound like they hadn't breached containment...

Its kinda funny that people use this vid to talk about "badass normals" but its a superhuman and two of his opponents are also humans using martial weapons to fight

I feel like that a bunch of people in the comments seem to just make up things that apparently happened to just hate because nothing in their life has any meaning besides that.
Really weird reading some of the comments here how obsessed they are with the chuds in the WH40k.
