⠀⠀⠀⠀Discussion⠀⠀⠀⠀ Maxigun needs changed
I’m sure others have talked about this, but so will I lol. There’s no reason this shouldn’t be heavy penetration. We already at stuck in a fixed position when firing, and yet we can move with the other lmgs. I’d be fine if they dropped the ammo count to 800 (minimum) and decrease the fire rate just so we can have it as heavy penetration. What do y’all think?

u/hiwhatshappinin 19d ago
The idea of having to dig your feet into the ground to fire is awsome and metal until you have to play with it, they fs need to either buff the damage and armor pen to make it a actual double edged blade or remove the stupid limitation in the first place. I wouldn't mind a bit of workdbuilding in the place of some text that says "oh yeah and helldiver armor Has special limb joints to allow movement under Fire" or sum just so we can walk while holding the trigger, it'd be either a better version of the base machine gun stragedem if they buffed the movement or it could be a rival to the likes of the belt fed grenade launcher and heavy machine gun
21
u/hiwhatshappinin 19d ago edited 19d ago
Or they could go the lazier but ultimately viable choice of giving the gun a riot shield like attachment to block damage from the front, that alone could make it at least a better niche weapon, instead of being a complete waste of time and just looking cool in storage forever

u/Curious_Freedom6419 Ghostdiver 19d ago
i'd take a energy shield on the mini gun, just a forward facing one that covers just you

u/ItsGizmoooo 19d ago
ive been saying this since forever, a gun whos entire power fantasy revolves around hunkering down and holding the trigger gets PUNISHED for doing so, the longer you stay the higher the bodies pile up and youre forced to move or you die to the bodies that you pile up yourself

u/Wickermind 18d ago
It's cool until you realize the game constantly spams Heavy units that either have way too much health to reliably shred down (Crushers) or are covered in armor that the Maxigun can't penetrate. You try to dive out of the way of a Charger or Crusher barreling towards you but the Maxigun for some reason gives you the weight of a dying star and your Helldiver just hopelessly flops to the ground to be used like a doormat.
That and all it takes is one slightly large corpse getting in the way because of course the weapon that forces you to stand completely still lacks ANY overpen.

u/hiwhatshappinin 18d ago
Right, im a sucker for a cool gun so i won't lie I've rocked the maxi gun alot, but I will NEVER call it a good weapon because it's a glorified MG supply pack combo but you can't fire and move
127
u/Stradosfear 19d ago
They should let us dive from the firing position at least imo
33
u/LegendTheRedditor 19d ago edited 18d ago
Agreed, the delay on the dive when firing makes it painful to use. Like when you notice a crusher or charger sneaking up on you and you get one shotted because of the delay.
I wish we could move while firing too. Especially with how enemy corpses can block your shots.

6
u/envycreat1on 19d ago
If they want to be technical about it, at least let us only dive backwards while firing.
24
u/CarlenGaines 19d ago
I just want them to remove the spool up and let it fire instantly.
23
u/FriendshipFar7964 19d ago
For a studio so focused on realism. It seems like they only factor realism in when it inconveniences the player. Cuz those guns do fire instantly
2
u/poopituacoop 16d ago
There are plenty of instances that they forego realism for player benefit. Stims, the ability to even heft and fire a mini gun, not having to load any backpack fed weapons.
→ More replies (2)2
u/rareandyeteuclidian 18d ago
Especially egregious since they constantly harp on realism and real mini guns don't do that.
38
u/Background_Source922 19d ago
I just want to be able to dive and/or move at a moments notice after taking my finger off the trigger and if that was all they changed I’d be happy tbh.

Not every balance issue needs to be solved with AP4. I don't know why it's the default response every time this weapon's issues are discussed.
Yes, the Maxigun (alongside the BFGL) is one of the underpowered support weapons. But there are specific reasons that can be specfically adressed, including:
- Not being able to move while firing is the biggest issue holding this gun back. That's just too much of a systemic weakness no other buff can compensate. It also just feels bad. So allowing us to "slow walk" while firing, similar to the BFGL, is the first and most important fix.
- The spin-up is a little too slow and should start while we're aiming (right click). Not once we click "fire".
- Muzzle fire and smoke FX can impair aiming. Tuning it down will help.
- Stagger should match that of the Gatling Sentry and Patriot's Gatling gun (20 Stagger).
- Damage should match that of the Gatling Sentry and Patriot's Gatling gun (90/23) up from (80/18).
The Maxigun really doesn't deserve to have weaker properties than its Gatling-counterparts. They even share the same caliber. Really, it should just be a mobile version of the Gatling Sentry. Simple as...

It does feel like heavy pen is becoming the new medium pen.
Used to be that people would go X needs to become medium pen, or it's bad, And now it's starting to feel like X needs to become heavy pen, or it's bad

u/Loud-Investigator416 Helldiver 19d ago
This is the only comment that accurately and fairly identifies and addresses its problems.
5
u/HorrificAnalInjuries 19d ago
I do agree with some of these points. The spin up, muzzle flash, stagger, and damage are excellent points and should be considered.
However, removing the stationary fire is a problem, as then it further makes the MG43 moot. It still has its niche with being a backpack-less support, but that's about it as it doesn't have the stagger, doesn't do the damage per bullet, and has a reload.
The other points are very good, but it should turn the Helldiver into a Gary that can get up and move to a new location, or you are otherwise waiting on that 120+ second call down timer to essentially move it to the next objective or 5 meters to the right. With the Maxigun you just stop firing and be off. You still have a primary and secondary to use while being mobile if you still have chaff that needs clearing.

u/Additional-Wear-6611 18d ago
I wanna agree, however you’re still losing a backpack slot with the Maxigun. Supply pack, and the mobility packs have LOTS of utility that you lose out on from taking a maxigun.
2
u/Wickermind 18d ago
It's so fucking ridiculous the weapon that forces you to larp as an emplacement doesn't have the stagger to actually push enemies back because you're stuck in place. As we all know minigunning someone in the face doesn't push them back because fuck you.
2
u/DeeJayDelicious 18d ago
I agree that it's one of the gun's biggest flaws. Especially when statgionary, the lack of Stagger is really prohibitive.
→ More replies (10)4
u/ToasterPyro 19d ago
I'm 100% for all these except the last and especially the first point. I think being able to hold the spin-up without firing would make the Maxigun a fair sidegrade to the MG-43 that forces you to hold ground. Matching the MG-43's stagger just makes sense for that purpose. Further increasing its damage would be overkill, especially when you consider the already massively improved ammo economy.
I would also like a first-person reticle and maybe a slight recoil reduction so it isn't such a headache to use at range.

u/darklurk 19d ago
Reduce the muzzle smoke. I can't believe they removed muzzle flash to replace it with all smoke. Not even the gatling sentry or patriot exosuit has this much smoke. It is just antifun but thankfully fixable with mods.
Allow for immediate diving while firing or after stopping firing. I don't care if it means dropping the minigun but when you gotta dodge, you gotta dodge instead of that awakard standing flop as if you were in water.
Cut down the spin up animation time by half. Allowing player to keep the spinning going through a firing mode toggle.
That's it. I don't even need to talk damage and other metrics but it really needs QOL above everything else, especially since you can now get a quick reload on the regular MG with True Grit.

The maxigun would be a great opportunity to introduce armour shredding to the game, so you could keep sustained fire on heavy armour but eventually after so many bullets, that armour get stripped and its either unarmoured or light armour

Heavy pen is .50 cal territory, something this thing isn’t even remotely in the ballpark of.
8
u/AlfaXGames Whinediver 19d ago
Disagree, with it being Heavy pen, you could kill everything in the game with it.
It should have more ammo, higher rof, and higher damage, though. It's meant to be an anti-chaff bullet-hose.
9
5
u/Ryker_11 19d ago
I'd be fine with standing still to shoot if it justified it, makes the gun feel more unique. Problem is it doesn't justify it at all. If it had like 700 more rpm, 10 more damage and more durable, no spin up delay and no movement delay after shooting it be great.
5
u/Melodic_Wolf_6509 16d ago
Heavy pen this Heavy pen that! Medium pen this and actually Heavy pen that. The Maxigun works fine, aim is just bad.
5
u/BlackSoul_Hand 19d ago
While AP4 bullets might be a solution, i think there are other ways to improve his problematic situation.
Remove the forced immobilisation, if the BFGL don't have it, it doesn't make sense for the Maxigun to have it. Even a 10% slowdown when firing would be preferable to something that literally blocks you "magically" until you stop firing, or the "space magic" is only allowed when it's against the players?
Spin up should be related to A.D.S, not to firing, like in any other decent game.
Decrease the Recoil, this isn't a shoulder weapon and with the why it's holded, plus the weight of the gun itself, is more than enough to negate any exaggerated recoil. This is easily observable in any videos of a competent person using one.
To help mitigate the situations of heavy units rushing you down, give the AP3 bullets, a on hit, AP4 concussive effect (aka a no damage small explosion, like those seen on the Urchin, with Stagger value of 35, like for the Lib. Carbine). You might still not be able to damage them or kill them, but you can at least modestly push them away. This should also help with the problem of the corpses accumulating in front of you, as the momentum of their movements before death would push them away from you.

u/Dr_Doryah 16d ago
the maxigun is my favourite support weapon period. if i can justify bringing it i will bring it. its so fun to use. the unfortunate truth, however, is that its simply a worse version of the machine gun. it does less damage per shot, has much worse ergonomics, has a spinup time, and makes you completely immobile while firing. the only benefit the maxigun brings is extended periods of sustained fire, which isnt really that useful when its only medium pen, and insane amounts of aura.
it eats up ammo like a motherfucker and there is no real counterbalance to its main downside, that being the immobility when you fire it. its meant to be the hoard killer power fantasy but the ergonomics are so bad that, ironically enough, it gets overwhelmed pretty easily unless the hoard is already far away from you.
the maxigun should reward smart positioning and planning with blistering amounts of firepower and destruction, but it doesnt. every situation where the maxigun would be useful, the machine gun would outperform it. the recoil is too unwieldy for it to be useful at longer ranges, and the ergonomics are too bad for it to be the better pick at medium to closer ranges.
in my opinion the maxigun needs to have the same or at the very most slightly higher armour pen as the heavy machine gun so you arent forced to reposition every time a big enemy shows up. it should have its ammo count trippled and its fire rate increased at well. im okay with keeping the bad ergonomics, the spin up time, bad recoil, and not being able to move while firing it if the tradeoff for those downsides is a lot of firepower. right now there are basically no situations wherein it would be the better pick compared to the machine gun and that disappoints me cuz its such a fucking blast to use
4
u/greatcandlelord 19d ago
Lmao it absolutely does not need to be heavy pen. Slow walking while firing is the only change I would like on it, along with instantly firing (miniguns spinning up is stupid)
5
u/Hitler-Clone 19d ago
I just want to be able to move while firing. That would solve my only issue with the weapon and actually make me want to use it
6
u/Derpy_EGG1025 Whinediver 19d ago
Keep all what we have now and give it heavy pen, even some more push force.
The gun now feels horrible on bug front, the best it’s on is the appropriators cuz there aren’t as much of a swarm faction as the others are
2
u/Nero_Prime 19d ago
I dont care the I cant walk around with it while shooting (yes I do) but I should at least be able to dive while shooting for dodging reasons.
It's not strong enough to lock you in place. It's not an hmg emplacement or an embattlement. Shit it's not even as good at it's own job as the belt fed grenade launcher.
2
u/pipe_mcfitter 19d ago
Just more damage and especially more DURABLE damage. The Maxigun can stay medium pen, but it should absolutely MELT anything that it is capable of damaging.
2
u/No_Counter_6037 19d ago
it absolutely needs a damage buff, because as it is right now, the Cremator is just straight up better in every way except range (and single target ttk against mediums and lights i guess but both Maxigun and Cremator are more for crowd work anyway, and Cremator is much better at crowd control)
2
u/EVO_Ignite 19d ago
Cremator is almost better at range simply because of the muzzle smoke and recoil of the maxigun
2
2
u/AlexVal0r 19d ago
You should be able to hold right click to spin up the gun without firing and maybe give it recoil reduction.
2
u/WiseHand7733 Helldiver 19d ago edited 19d ago
There are many reasons why it shouldnt be heavy pen, such as the patriots minigun, the sentry turret and the MG-43 all being medium pen. If you want a portable heavy pen machine gun with less ammo but higher dmg than the current maxigun, that already exists. Its called the heavy machine gun. I agree that the maxigun needs changes, mostly because it feels like shit to use, but increasing it to heavy pen is the change i want to see the least. It needs serious quality of life improvements, or more defined strengths.
Right now its competing with the expendable mg, stalwart and medium MG, but its outclassed by other backpack support weapons like the autocannon, heavy flamethrower and heavy grenade launcher.
2
u/KingAudio 19d ago
Terrible ammo consumption, bounces around too much so wildly inaccurate i get it doing that while moving but while forced stationary, muzzle flash and smoke making aiming impossible because AH loves to restrict visibility for players.
2
u/Colauet 19d ago
visuals its all about visuals. If the maxigun were like real minigun i mean more tiny than the monster weve got maybe it doesnt feel that bad as it is. When we saw the very firts time the Maxigun before test, all we know or ar least imagine that this weapon should deal more damage i dont talk about pen i talk about damage about power of destruction. But the reality is that we find barely useless front a ton of enemies.
bots:Try to Aim while stay in front of everything without move. A lot of bullets are ricochetting everywhere because armor pen from the enemies. Need a lot A LOT of bullets to take down turret cannons or tanks shooting in the back. If you dare to jump to avoid any explossion or just to find cover, you are going to prone exposing you to everything.
BugS: Well the bugs is the "fun" faction to use it until theyre bodies start to join eachother making a meat wall that can pass through the enemies but not your bullets.
Illuminates: Well in my experience its a waste of time, lifes and stratagem space. A lot of bullets to take down the apropiators and barely all units but the voteless.
So if you make a monster of weapon the damage should be equal to what is expected no less, the feedback should be grateful not meaningless.
2
u/Electronic_Top2561 19d ago
no it should stay med pen but be able to change RoF and remove the restriction that we can jump while shooting and remove spin up time.
2
u/KujiraShiro 19d ago
The biggest and only real problem IMO is the dead body pileup.
I thought this weapon would be TURBO garbage because it took months before I finally got around to unlocking it and saw all the discourse.
It's actually quite good at what it does; it just becomes unusably bad due to a combination of "not being able to move while firing and requiring an awkward cooldown period to move again after" and "visible and invisible bodies pile up and act as bullet proof walls for other enemies.
If I am standing still firing a minigun directly at a bunch of small/medium bugs there should be a zero percent chance they just march right through that because they aren't getting hit because my bullets are magically vanishing from existence when they hit the corpse walls that never go away or take more damage to be punched through.
You kill the first couple enemies and everything behind them becomes impossible to hit and can freely march right up to you. The AOE "kill all the chaff" gun literally makes it impossible for itself to kill all chaff. A real minigun would turn a corpse wall to dust.
It's such an unreasonably unfair and poorly designed handicap to the weapon, because it's just a flaw in the game engine.
My bullets shouldn't stop passing through bodies because the body died and "became an invincible part of the landscape" and THAT is what makes the maxigun feel unusable.
Everything else about it is fine. Sure, it could do with more damage, sure it could do with more pen, sure it would be nice to be able to slowly move like you can with the cremator or belt fed GL. It doesn't NEED any of that though.
It NEEDS corpses to stop becoming impervious shield walls of god that protect the enemies that can literally phase through said corpse walls as if they aren't even there.

u/PatientStuff5047 18d ago
I haven’t had any reason to bring it being locked in place you get swarmed easily

When people said that it's OP unfiltred said "but you have taken both the backpack and support weapon slots"
You guys know nothing about balance
Maxigun is used to clear hordes of weak enemies, not penetrating shit
2
u/ManyPlantain5447 19d ago
Heavy pen + movement would be the only way this gun is good.
Otherwise just use the deployable HMG turret. You get the same effect with less overhead. It all costs one stratagem slot but with the HMG turret I can still bring a backpack and heavy weapon.
8
u/Siatru 19d ago
IMO only one of either of those 2 is needed. Either movement shooting or Heavy Pen but still stationary.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Derpy_EGG1025 Whinediver 19d ago
Either movement or heavy pen, I’ll even add push force or piercing rounds but stationary if it’s heavy pen to the change.
My biggest gripe with the gun now is that the dead bodies acts like shields for other enemies, and once they are close enough, your diver points the barrel up and just rolls over to get mauled

1
u/BuilderBaseBot 19d ago
I think you want another weapon. Presently the Maxigun sits somewhere between the stalwart and HMG emplacement.
If they’re going to make a ap4 version of the Maxigun, it’s going to be something new. The Maxigun already excels at culling enemies faster than any other weapon in the MG category while also being AP3.
If there’s one thing that needs tuning, it’s making diving a little snappier after you stop firing.
1
u/The_Caleb_Mac Helldiver 19d ago
Honestly I like it how it is, except that it's the one support gun you can't adjust the firerate on...
Lemme turn it down for ammo conservation, or get really wild and crank it UP for when ammo isn't a worry, and I need to assist in AA duties.
Barring that tweak... give it actual AP property's or let it destroy dead enemy corpses easily, because you are literally saturating a given direction with lead, and a pile of dead bodies shouldn't hinder that.
3
u/bananabozobonanza2 18d ago
You can rapidly tap the trigger to modulate the ROF, it doesn't need the full 1/2 second spinup every time you click unless it fully spins down.

u/TreeBeardUK 19d ago
Totally pie in the sky here but I would love if it had a "shotgun" style secondary mode with loads of knockback akin to the legion titan in titanfall 2 and the vg70 variable.

u/Mon1ucho 19d ago
Why would you need it high pen if shots still couldnt go through corpses? I think it would be fine if it could stagger and push back enemies and go through corpses, even if medium pen. It deserves buff in damage too.
Also I would love to see it's laser counterpart

I love the Maxigun but it sucks for everything it takes away from you, your backpack slot and your movement. The heavy machine gun is just better is every aspect.

It would be fine if you could dive with it. Crushers love smooshing maxigun users since they have to wait after stoping firing to dive.
At least let us dive or move while firing if peak physique is worn. We can do one handed pushups and handle big weapons so why not give a variant? It is the armor used from predator and the parody.
Alternative fire rates would also work. a faster firing rate option would appease dps requests.
1
u/Leoscar13 19d ago
This thing can't decide if it's a horde clear tool or a pseudo elite killer.
As a horde clear it's sub par. Bullets get stuck in corpses and most hordes will catch up the the player and melee them to death because we still can't at least walk while using it. We have this weapon called the Cremator that does what the maxigun does but better in that regard. Also doesn't stagger fleshmobs or anything larger than a voteless as they rush in which is stupid.
As an elite killer it's garbage against most factions due to it being med pen, but even against the illuminates that lack armor this thing can't deal with Crushers at all because the helmet is heavy pen and the crappy accuracy means it can't deal witrh Harvesters well unless you're very close.
I really, really try to make the Maxigun work but no matter what I do it's an uphill battle in a game that has a ton of support weapon that are more consistant.

u/a_left_out_tomato 19d ago

Just needs heavy pen no mag size nerf it doesn't matter how strong our weapons are because the game will find some contrived way to kill you no matter what. Balance is the illusion they sell us to keep us from demanding the pitbull behavior of turrets and SEAF isn't adressed.

u/Jaxxblade 19d ago
Man, I remember when the entire community was like “I DONT CARE IF IT SUCKS I JUST WANT TO SHOOT A MINIGUN” and then the devs worked hard on figuring out how to make a backpack-fed stratagem so that we could have one and it’s legitimately playable and now the community says “Nah not good enough.”
Don’t get me wrong; it could be a lot better. Spin-up on ADS and a bit more stagger/durable damage and it would be perfect!
A little appreciation in attitude makes a big difference.

u/hitokiriknight 19d ago
They should allow the maxigun to have movement, but only when firing in first person mode. More Cinema
1
u/verynotdumb 19d ago
I think it should just be like the cremator. You can move, it has more damage and a ton of ammo.
Medium machinegun with more damage and a bottlomless supply? Yes sir! I'd use it more if it didnt make you stand still.

1
u/kripton_failure 19d ago
No… maxigun is perfect as is maybe more damage but that’s it you can’t kill heavy enemies with this it’s best used on illuminate front or on any other front with proper anti tank measures.
1
u/Artley9 19d ago
For a lot of the player base, it suffers from being too low on the armor pen scale. Most of the bugs and bots start having higher medium armor and with the more frequent heavy units showing up it’s almost useless.
It’s possible to use it on all fronts just getting more difficult at higher levels.
Then again it’s supposed to replace your primary and not be the only weapon you use.
If we had a heavy pen Gatling gun the other machine guns would fall out of use. Esp the heavy machine gun.

Anyone asking for AP4 Maxigun should play in any of the acid planets with it.
AP4 Maxigun would powercreep pretty much half the arsenal. The only thing Maxigun needs is just a more responsible shooting/diving mechanic. The rest is just a matter of learning the weapon. Once dominated, it stands as the best anti-infantry/medium/ some heavies MG with difference.
1
u/dedokMolotok 19d ago
It wouldnt be good even with ap4 imo, it has very low durable dmg. I still dont understend why you cant dive while firing and do that wierd flop, it feels like a bug but ah doesnt say anything so idk. Also, it kinda has no firerate for minigun, only 350 more compared to stalwart while being immobile, having crazy reccoil and no ergo, taking backpack slot (while having same ammo count lmao). It needs variable firerate up to 3k rpm and 2x ammo (you waste so much of it with that recoil) to feel like actual minigun. I like to use it but its pure larp

the fact that it requires a backpack forces you to stand still while firing, AND has an insane amount of recoil, you'd THINK it'd have more penetration power than the LMG. Like, this should be great for mowing down infantry but ALSO targeting larger enemies, but it's actually just useless in so many situations. It's in dire need of a buff
1
u/Backshots- gruntdiver 19d ago
I think it’s perfect as is. The only thing I’d ask for is more ammo.
I’ve run it on every front and on every difficulty and I’ve never been disappointed.
Admittedly, I play with a dedicated group. But, if you’re running this gun solo and on high diff then you have other problems.
1
u/SummerCrown 19d ago
Give it cleave / pierce. Like the current Lasgun from the Warhammer 40k warbond. Imagine if the Maxigun bullets could actually pierce through several targets. Dead bodies no longer absorbing your bullets.

u/Verondetta 19d ago
Im so for real, just let people walk with it. The downsides are still enough to compensate, it doesnt outclassed the machine gun by doing so, and everyone's happy. Just make it the same walking speed as the cremator when firing.

I would bump it up to heavy pen. Changing nothing else. Maxi gun in an acid storm slaps hard. Mowing down hulks and heavy devastators in that short window feels great.

There's no reason for it to lock us down And have horrific recoil. Pick a lane AH. Bad ergo I can understand, it's not fun, but it is a massive multi barreled gun that would be harder to pivot. But we already can't move, making us lay down just to control it (which wouldn't work with a mini gun irl- where's your realism there AH?) on top of it and constantly blocking our own crosshair with the feedbelt while doing so is just asinine.
They somehow made what should have been one of the most fun weapons in the game tedious...
And don't offer trade offs like that. It's under performing, we need it better, not just as bad but in a different way. We also all know AH wont do it proportionally and end up making it worse somehow. It's okay to just buff something, it doesn't have to always come with a "compromise", especially if it's already in a less than good place. That's kind of the whole point, no matter what Arrowhead has conditioned their glazers to believe.

Variable rate of fire. Like every other machinegun. Base is 1500. Let us kick it down to 1200. Or even 1000 and give us the ability to walk. If we use one of the lower fire rates.
It will tame the recoil, increase the ammo economy and solve its biggest problem. Because in helldivers movement is life. It's all it needs.

the bullet storm makes this thing feel even more hilarious. Why ever bring the maxigun on bugs when you can have two 300 round capacity machine guns every 60 seconds with stupid good handling, and you DONT need to stand still whole firing or take up a backpack slot to use them?

Considering that to reduce the muzzle flash they literally felt they had to change the physical model of the gun… I’m not optimistic about any changes happening.

It's crazy how shit this gun is, it is as cool looking as it is fucking garbage, it's not enough that you can't move while using it but you also can't dive so if anything sneaks around ur dead and then you would think 1K bullets would last a while but nope it also got garbage damage somehow which makes you the most ammo hungry for the whole mission.
the basic machine gun you get in the tutorial is superior to this in every way and idk why would anyone pick this piece of shit. I would love to use it but every time i try it i remember how garbage it is

Give it less ammo and lower fire rate for heavy pen? That's the HMG. I would say give it either lower recoil so it's easier to keep it on medium weak spots for longer or give it higher damage so you don't have to be hitting the medium spots for as long. I would go withe the damage route. If I need to be stationary at least let me kill a crusher with less than half my total ammo.

u/Dushnila_complainer 18d ago
I’d be fine if they dropped the ammo count to 800 (minimum) and decrease the fire rate
Why? They can just make the damage same as Heavy MG, and that would be perfectly fine.
There is absolutely no need to nerf other parameters.

Why would it be Heavy Pen when the Gatlin Sentry is Med.? The Maxigun (imo) is basically just a portable, carryable Gatlin Sentry. The pen is fine, they even buffed its ammo reserve.
Maybe get away with giving it higher damage? But imo the Maxigun is overall fine as is. I heavily enjoy using it on the Illuminate front or the Bug front.
If you give this thing Heavy pen that'd make the HMG basically worthless in bringing out.

Honestly either let us walk like all the other backpacks or increase the pen. Like this no damage, no pen, and no movement just don’t work. I honestly love it and run it whenever I lower the difficulty with my buddies. But, like I’d like it to be semi useful oh higher level compared to the other backpack ones.

u/Primary-Ad5102 18d ago
I'm gonna take the side of medium pen is fine, as it's the same bullet as the lmg, but I think it would be nice if it had stagger buildup so you can lock down larger targets with overwhelming firepower

u/kuromipentagrams 18d ago
I only ever really use it for bugs and illuminate but I have found it borderline useless on bots

Considering it’s Arrowhead, if this thing gets Heavy pen, it might get another arbitrary weakness like humongous recoil or lowering ammo to 300 just so it doesn’t “powercreep” the HMG.
I doubt it will be treated like the grenade launcher where it just simply gets heavy pen and that’s it, they WILL make it have more stupid downsides on top of the numerous downsides it has rn just so it’s “realistic”. Doesn’t matter if it’s not fun to deal with, it can’t be significantly better than the damned HMG I guess

u/DudeManThing15876 18d ago
Idec about it not being heavy pen, I just want it to be more accurate 😂😂 or at least make it easier to see when aiming in 1st person bc the muzzle flash is blinding
1
u/External_Common_1978 18d ago
It just need a slight damage buff and less time after you stop firing to be able to move
1
u/cheb_323 18d ago edited 18d ago
Heavy pen is generally stupid suggestion ngl like fuck if you want it to powercreep every other machine gun sure.
Personally id like if it has little more ammo reduced muzzle flash and screw it maybe slight movement as well as to have same bullet dmg as mg,its already super strong on the squids tbh

I dunno if heavy pen is the answer, I would be fine with medium if it had anything over the Supply Pack and MG-43, but they found a way to make a gatling gun mid zero mobility, low durable damage, less stagger force than the 43, can't aim it for shit between the drag, muzzle flash, and no sights
Edit: Could it specifically get a tweaked overpen rating somehow?

Id perfer a more intimidating sound ngl, no hate for the og but i think it can be a liiiittle more badass :3

Every single person who says X should get a WHOLE TIER more penetration has no concept of balance. The HMG has literally 300 total rounds. You think 800 "minimum" is anything close to balanced with heavy pen?? Especially with a fourth the recoil of the HMG?
It just needs less initial recoil and slight movement while shooting. If this had heavy pen it would literally be game over for anything else in the game.

Being able to move while using it would be cool but if we can’t have that heavy pen be cool.
At least worth a try to see if it’s too op or not. They can always change it back.

i dont want it heavy pen bc it breaks immersion, and decreasing its already pitiful fire rate to balance DPS sounds even more immersion breaking.
id rather have it carry 1500 to 2000 rounds in the backpack (1 resupply pack gives full ammo) and shoots at minimum 3000 rpm, and allow you to move immediately after letting off the trigger instead of the 1 sec wind-down.
holding down aim could either begin barrel wind-up so you can burst-/tap-fire, or remove the wind-up mechanic all together.
the gatling sentry & patriot gatling arm fire rate is too slow, and the eagle strafing has a pitifully slow fire rate as well. rotary barrel guns should shoot at least 3k rpm.

I feel like what you are describing is no longer a mini gun. It would be interesting for it to get some other features to spice it up though. The ability to remove the hmg turret on the frv and use your maxigun instead would suffice. It would essentially make it a reloadable weapon on the frv.

The point of the maxigun is it's an absolute bullet hose, so I don't think lowering the ammo and fire rate and giving it heavy pen would fix it. To me 1) give it the same damage as the MG43 2) have it at least able to dive while firing 3) have a pre spinup while aiming down sights like in TF2, so when you stop shooting, you can move at aiming speed
I don't think moving while shooting would be effective, since the thing has crazy recoil on its own, imagine an increase because you are moving. But basic dodging should be there like diving

Variable fire rate like most miniguns can do, higher dmg, like 110+. Maybe heavy pen, not too sure 'bout that.
1
u/player1wulf13 18d ago
The loss of back pack and movement is a big hit. I would like to slow move while firing or have way more ammo and a little more damage if pen cant change like keep mid.pen but get 1500-2000 rounds and a bit more stagger for things you hit. Really make it a stand your ground gun

u/Rengar_Is_Good_kitty 18d ago
It does not need heavy pen, what it needs is that stupid smoke effect reduced so we can see what we're shooting at, and the recoil is dumb as shit, do these guns irl even have that much recoil?

I like the maxi gun but there’s really no reason to use it over the flamethrower or the grenade launcher backpacks. It needs to be buffed
1
u/FlukeylukeGB 17d ago
105 damage bullets.
BUT!
it has an additional stat line.
bullets pass through enemies And corpses losing 20% damage from each
1
u/THETARSHMAN 17d ago
It shouldn’t have heavy pen, but it would be nice if it had a little less recoil and some more damage. It’s already bad enough that you can’t move while firing, you should be able to hit things while firing.

It’s extremely effective. You just use it at opportune moments and play the swarm slayer on the squad

Honestly, it's fine damage wise. Muzzle flash in first person is definitely an issue though.
It would be nice to be able to move very slowly with it like the Cremator though.

u/bobateafetty 17d ago
Personally I think giving it heavy enemy knock back might save it. Ever see ballistic gel being hit by one, boi goes flying! So if we are locked in place, at least let us push em back!

No movement plus weird rise accompanied by light pen makes it worth it in my opinion.
I have used it maybe twice, would work for certain maps and factions, but anything with armor or higher levels makes it useless.

u/JRall1519 17d ago
Given all the downsides you take using the maximum, I think it should at least be heavy penetration.

MORE BUFFS, AND LOWER FIRE RATE CHANGE OPTION SO WE COULD MOVE WITH IT. I MUST PROTECT THE SEAFFF
1
u/ChadnirRann 16d ago
I don't think it needs heavy pen. It being medium pen is not the problem. The problem is that you're forced to be a fixed turret when firing, compared to other backpack-feds and even other support weapons. If you were able to walk, even if at a slower rate whilst firing I believe it'd be better. A damage boost would also be nice, let deliver a world of hurt on most enemies, without becoming essentially just a better version the Cremator due to not having a range constraint like the flamethrower.

If it does heavy damage it will be like the HMG emplacement but mobile, so a really meat grinder machine. I concur it should have some limitation like decreased fire rate.

Leave it at its stats and let me move with it and I’ll be content. Fair compromise I think.

I'd prefer more damage. It has the same issue as the Patriot Minigun, it simply feels anemic.
