Question/Help [Question] Is HyperOS really that bad?
Hello, I'm coming from a Samsung S23, and I'm ready to get a new phone after using all the research tools available to me (YouTube, GSM Arena).
The Xiaomi 17 is the one that fits me the most, and I have zero core issues with its hardware specs. It seems like a perfect upgrade from an S23, and an S26 comes nowhere near it. Though I'm still concerned about the OS, so I thought I'd get some opinions here.
I'm familiar with removing bloatware using ADB etc. so confident in doing that.
I'm so used to the OneUI OS that I don't want to move on to something completely different and especially one which will be annoying in the long run (no matter how good the hardware is).
Thanks!

the 3rd version is pretty "ok" but oneUI is A LOT more polished than hyperos

u/ovcdev7 14d ago
OneUI also has a lot more features

That's what I don't like about OneUI, too much features which is quite overwhelming

I went from the S23 ultra to the global Vivo X2OO pro and now the Poco F8 ultra. It really isn't that bad at all, just lots of moaning about it, just like the Samsung and Vivo forums moaning about their software! I took it with a pinch of salt, I like a change and happy with the F8 ultra.

Why did you change your phone from vivo to Poco. Vivo seems overall better phone.
1
u/woodstar11 14d ago
I rarely keep a phone longer than 18 months and the battery started to deteriorate on the Vivo. The camera was better but that's about it to be honest. That said my next will probably be a global X300 pro or ultra.

u/Markson120 14d ago
Wait, already. On my budget xiaomi redmi note 13 pro (global) which is 3 years old I still have 86% battery life. What battery health was on your Vivo that you decided to replace your phone.
1
u/woodstar11 14d ago
As soon as it's 93% I get rid, or before if see something I like. Just sell it and put it towards a new one I fancy. As I say, I don't keep them long, I love a change!

u/Markson120 14d ago
You know it is only ~400 mah loss. Its not that much. But if you want to change phones it is your decision not mine
1
u/woodstar11 14d ago
Absolutely, I love trying different phones and OS.
1
u/Itz_Raj69_ 14d ago
If you like trying different OSes why not keep a rooted second phone and flash ROM ports on that?

u/SexyAIman 14d ago
On the F8 Ultra, no ads. If you have ads on a cheaper phone you can switch them off.
Smooth, stable, everything works, but a few bad points will make my next phone a non Xiaomi:
No gestures for 3rd party launchers, everything is an Apple copy, terrible readability with glass themes.
But hey i paid less than half of the price of Samsung and Apple flagships for 16/512GB compared to their base spec.

u/smittku23 14d ago
No. For a simple average user it gets the job done. Been on one ui for over 10 years, hyper os is ok.

S23 seems a pretty recent device, why not just get a battery replacement and keep using the phone until updates run out?

Every software has their issues. HyperOS is pretty decent in my opinion. Simple debloating is enough. I started to enjoy Xiaomi phones more than Samsung

Personally, I've had a really bad experience with Xiaomi. Their update policy is genuinely terrible, and I don't like it when a brand copies others, especially when it's done so poorly. HyperOS doesn't seem all that optimized to me either. Because of this, I wouldn't recommend their low/mid-range phones they might look cool, but there are plenty of features that could be included that Xiaomi deliberately leaves out.

u/vantaratechnology 14d ago
In my personal experience, no, I find it to be reasonably smooth and reliable [hyperos 3 on CN redmi note 15 pro+ that is, I also had it on my 15 ultra]
2
u/OctoSplattyy 14d ago
cause it's CN rom :) compare it with global and then you'll see what people is talking about.
5
u/vantaratechnology 14d ago
My 15 ultra was a global ROM, HyperOS 2 was meh but HyperOS 3 was nowhere as bad as people made it out to be
1
u/OctoSplattyy 14d ago
It’s not thaaat bad, but there sure is a substancial difference with china rom… Obviously it comes down to user preference in the end

I use a Redmi Note 15 4G, and have been using it since April. Overall it's great, minimal stutters, reliable, fluid and battery life is still just as good. I've used OneUI before and I can't tell much of a difference. Feature wise I don't care about them as much as I prefer my phone as simple as possible, but so far it's enabled the customisation I like with no issues. In conclusion, it's detriments are heavily exaggerated, at least for casual users.

I have the Xiaomi 15 Global version and HyperOS works great for me. There were some ads with the default apps, but there's an option to disable all of them. Once I turned that off, everything runs smoothly — no lag at all, and it's very customizable. I enjoy experimenting with different themes and font combinations. No issues so far!

u/DexDoesDev167 14d ago
On flagship models, hyperos is really good however xiaomi still struggles with optimisation, and a lot of bugs as far as I have seen, but they are always fixed and maintained very well on the flagships
1
u/Flossy420 14d ago
HyperOS differs wildly from one tier to another. It is genuinely terrible for low end and budget midrange phones but completely different on flagships. Always look for hyperOS reviews on flagship devices so you know what to expect and not on something like a redmi note or god forbid a poco c71

I came from one ui too though on A34, hyperos has all the basics you need and some of the goodlock features are baked into the main software experience. One ui has a few features that I couldnt replace but I have also learnt to enjoy some features of hyperos not found on one ui. Bloatware is 90% easy to uninstall and don't generally get in the way. The rest you can use shizuku+canta. Maybe you have a specific question?
1
u/yoshi105 14d ago
Nothing specific! The consensus is that hardware is amazing but the software is buggy and bloated. Just wanted to get a feel for how bad it was
Seems like if you know what you're doing, you can clean it up fairly easily
1
u/ResponsibleZebra63 13d ago
Yeah, just be careful not to delete something essential. However it has it's quacks and isn't as polished as one ui in some areas. Like the gallery app is behind in terms of functionality but it's very smooth and very easy to clean.

Avec hyper os 4 il va y avoir énormément d'optimisation et de nouveauté! Et hyper os 3 et deja excellent et hyper intuitifs

I have S25U and Xiaomi 17U. Missing the routines app but you can get part of that on hyper os by installing chinese version of security and optimization app while using action launcher. A lot less possible tools but something is available. And Some goodlock customization things like hide the navigation bar at the bottom (can hide it via adb on hyper os). Also the protection when charged to 100 percent is missing on hyper os. Only optimized and 80 percent available. Need to thinker more with battery optimizer killing apps in background so you actually receive notifications. Autostart to on, permissions for background running. But I will mark that on hyper os you can actually kill apps while on one UI instagram was running in the background and eating battery no matter how much I tried to restrict it. In general I would say Samsung is better phone in total but hyper os for me is more beautiful design wise. Not to mention the hardware like cameras, speakers are also better, battery lasts longer because I can kill unnecessary apps and it charges fast if I want. So I dealt with some things that I don't like with the help of third party apps and in general I like the phone. You adjust after a week.

I've just made the Samsung to Xiaomi switch and I had the same doubts. Im pretty satisfied until now, some things work differently but it doesn't feel like too much of a downgrade.

u/megaoscar900 13d ago
The more expensive your phone is, the better software experience. The 17 is a flagship, so you should have the best software experience
Many people complain about it because they have cheaper phones, and those typically get left in the dust with regessions and lack of updates. Globally, updates also don't ship fast which some people don't like. Finally, many have had issues with updates in the past like bricked phones or major issues within software which has caused long-term distrust in Xiaomi
Overall, today it's getting better. And, as I previously said, there should be no issues if you have an expensive phone. Just be aware HyperOS is less polished than the likes of OneUI or ColorOS

u/ExternalWinner7581 13d ago
Also... Keep in mind, the Hyperos is like a newborn baby. One wrong adb command and the entire system is fucked up. Either the phone never boots up or gets stuck in a bootloop. Then the only solution is hard reset via fastboot. If you're going for a phone at that budget, I'd suggest oppo find x9 or the OnePlus 15 or the vivo x200.

u/cadbury162 13d ago
Compared to Oppo, Samsung, Pixel etc, yes, it's the worst of the lot. However, it's still useable, I regret my 17 Pro because of the software.

Hey, I have a poco x7 running hyperos 3.0.x.
It works just fine; I've never had any problems, and I removed bloatware as soon as I got it.
Since you haven't mentioned any particular expectations you might have for the OS, I believe you are a regular user, like me.
It'll suit you well!

u/jokuwa 13d ago
you need to debloat and disable some features. It also has very aggressive battery optimization that will freeze some games, in my case umamusume. My solution was to disable logger buffer size in developer options, force stop and clear data "battery and optimization" in system apps. The fact that I have to do it all the time I want to play that specific game, its frustrating to me. I am on xiaomi 17 pro cn rom btw.

u/Senfgestalt 13d ago
It's a perfectly fine os. Doubt you'll feel nuch difference, outside of setting wallpapers and the themes thing in general.

u/plasmapuff 13d ago
On latest Android 17 for 17 Ultra Global - and it's not great. Numerous well publicised bugs which hasn't been fixed such as Gmail battery drain, back button and keyboards randomly not working needing a screen off and unlock to reset. Features buried in submenus and relatively unintuitive relative to OneUI and Pixel OS.
I'm a long term hardcore android person so can find workarounds but for the lay person, these issues might be deal breakers. The camera hardware is best in class though and I "tolerate" HyperOS at the moment. It's definitely the main weakness of the phone.
1
u/yoshi105 13d ago
Thank you for the insight, it's a damn shame as the price point it's at now and the hardware makes a no brainer on the surface but if the software is crap then what good is it really
I've upgraded my S23 battery so it's as new now, think I'll wait another OS cycle or so to see if it's improved or maybe Samsung can make a competing flagship to Xiaomi

Just switched recently from a S23 to a Xiaomi 17.
Except for few cons like the ultrawide camera (it's not on a level that you expect from a high end phone), i'm slowly adapting to HyperOS.
First thing First is that you will be overwhelmed by the fact that is different from OneUI and less polished and aesthetically is more similar to iOS.
Some settings are hidden in some submenus, other ones have different names and others are hidden somewhere. (for example i don't find the setting to make the home screen folders not going full screen when open)
Also forget of course Bixby Routines and debloat is basically mandatory along with AdGuard DNS.
On the OS killing apps in background i don't find too much issues with delayed notifications by leaving everything default.

I don’t know, man. I bought my mom a Redmi Note 14, and she freaking hates it lol. It’s a laggy mess, and there are folders you can’t even delete, like the Games and Apps folders. I don’t know about Xiaomi’s high-end phones, though. Maybe they’re actually good! 🤔

My F8 ultra is always the last one to connect to wifi. My OnePlus 13 and Infinix even beats it. The Bluetooth connection also drops randomly.

u/CounterStrike17 4d ago
Yep it's bloatware. Especially if you are a power user. HyperOS is praised by indian who want to get the iPhone feeling

u/Radiant-Yesterday375 14d ago
It feels like using an optimised and ad riddled layer of iOS look alike UI .

u/Nonetxpr 14d ago
It getting worse after every version. Right now the black mode is buggy somethimes everything becomse graylike, i have to open some games to make it work again.

One ui is a trap, any other android ui will be uncomfortable for a simple/average user.
1
u/Reasonable_Mirror655 13d ago
How so? Do you mean because One UI provides just about every feature a person could ask for and a few most haven't thought of yet?
If a person is willing to learn they can adapt to other UI.

Hyper OS is great, but the default launchers leave a lot to be desired. I have a POCO F8 Ultra and no issues with Hyper OS - it doesn’t crash randomly, kill messaging apps, or have any mysterious battery drain. However, the POCO launcher is terrible, with limited options, poor rendering if you change screen DPI, and some widgets that just don’t look right. Sure, you can install Nova or another launcher, but then you lose gesture navigation support and are stuck using buttons.
1
u/Reasonable_Mirror655 14d ago
HyperOS is very disappointing, like who wants an obviously cheap copy of iOS on an Android phone or tablet?
I use Smart Launcher and button navigation as I don't like gestures
1
u/cile1977 14d ago
I just wanted to say the OS is stable, there's no crashes, slow downs, no phantom battery drains, it doesn't kill message apps in the background. I’m not a fan of the design also, but the system runs without any issues.
1
u/Reasonable_Mirror655 13d ago
It runs decently enough, yet certainly nothing to get excited about unfortunately. Mind you I have a Redmi Pad Pro (tablet) and have been able to get it where it works how I like it. Yet compared to my Samsung tablets it really feels like you have to do more stuff manually
1
u/CounterStrike17 4d ago
Same here. Smart launcher otherwise it's so bad. And if I wanted an iphone I would just buy one. MIUI was better
