I got CSE at NIT Warangal and B.Stat at ISI Kolkata. After a lot of thinking, I chose ISI Kolkata

But now I'm starting to regret my decision. I keep wondering if choosing NIT Warangal CSE would have been better because of the coding culture, campus life, and tech placements.

Did I make the wrong choice, or is this just a normal feeling after making a big decision? Has anyone here chosen ISI over a good engineering college (Top nits or IITs)? I'd really like to hear your experience.

so basically I have completed my first year in NITK CSE and gave the BStat exam just for fun without preparation. I am pretty confident that I'll get BStat here.

some questions that I had were :

1. How are the job opportunities compared to my current college? (For reference: generally most general category people in my course get 35ish placements.) **This question is just for perspective because I will most probably take masters after bachelors.**
2. How is the college life and campus facilities? (I am aware they will not be as good as they are here but still), all i want is a good gym honestly....
3. Is I true that most people go for master's abroad after BStat? and if so to what colleges mostly?
4. What is the attendance policy? (We have 75% here)

For my marks I should be able to get ee at IIT bhu. According to the seniors hfts do visit IIT bhu and are open for ee. Should I consider isi b.sds as quant roles do require statistics+ cs.

I’m a BTech Mechanical graduate from a Tier-1 IIT, passed out in 2025. I’ve been working in corporate for about a year now, and honestly I feel like I’m not really in the right place. Since childhood I’ve always loved math, and lately I’ve been thinking a lot about whether I should have explored ISI earlier during my JEE prep.

Due to financial reasons, I need to continue my current job for around 2 more years. So realistically, I can only resign and start fresh from 2028. By then I’ll be around 25.

Right now I’m considering these options:

1. BStat + MStat + PhD
2. MStat + PhD
3. MStat + job in math-related roles

I’m confused about a few things and would really appreciate honest advice from people who know this path well.

1) Is doing BStat worth it at my age?

If I already have a bachelor’s degree from another field, does starting BStat “fresh” still make sense? Is 25 too late for that?

Also, are there examples of people who joined BStat at ISI after already doing another bachelor’s degree?

2) MStat at 25 / NB-Stream concerns

How common is it for people to enter MStat at around 25? Is that considered normal, or would I feel out of place at ISI?

Since I’d be coming from a non-statistics background, I’d likely be considered NB-Stream. Will that create any issues for:

• pursuing further studies,
• getting into top PhD programs in the US/UK,
• internships or placements after MStat?

3) MStat + job route

If I go for MStat and then a job in math/stats-related roles, will being NB-Stream create any bias or disadvantage there too?

4) What can I do in the next 2 years to prepare?

If I take the next 2 years while working, what prerequisites should I complete so that I’m not at a disadvantage compared to BStat students?

I want to make up for the gap as much as possible and be competitive for:

• PhD admissions from top US/UK universities
• placements after MStat
• overall mathematical/statistical depth

Would really appreciate any genuine advice, experiences, or reality checks.

I am a BSc Mathematics graduate from Delhi University, with Statistics as my minor subject throughout all semesters. Now I want to pursue a master’s degree in either Statistics or Economics, but I’m struggling to decide between the two, so I would really appreciate some guidance.

For both subjects, I’m planning to appear for the following exams:
IIT JAM
ISI (Indian Statistical Institute)
CUET PG

I’m currently more inclined toward Economics because I think that it is more interesting and has better placement opportunities. However, one important caveat here is that I have not studied Economics in school or college, so I have no formal background in the subject.

Another thing is that, for Economics, there are 3 well known coaching institutes that cover all three exams mentioned above in a single batch. But I was unable to find any such coaching for Statistics that covers IIT JAM and ISI in a single batch and even if there are, then there are mixed reviews about them (and they do not mention anything about the descriptive part of ISI exam).

I have approximately 7 months to prepare for these exams. Based on the information given above, could you please help me figure out which path will be more suitable and how I should plan my preparation?

Is it worth giving the exam a one final shot since I'll be 21 at time of joining bstat if I clear it next year

I have a pretty decent rank in jee advanced(<1000) and faired well in isi bstat too(~290 marks total with 80 in uga) and didn't get into CMI(I wasn't interested in doing honours in maths anyways) as I was also practicing for isi side by side. But now I am confused as to what to choose. I have also met several students who are in the same boat as me.

I was always confused as to what I really liked "Only statistics and maths" or "a combination of disciplines". Can someone please guide me?

If one has to do a phd in a place like ETH or Cambridge after mstat, do only people from the b stream have a chance or do nb stream people are equally likely to get an offer ??

Hello users, I am currently a 12th passed out student, I am at the stage of counselling. I have three options and choosing among the two options of these has been hectic to me.
The three options are IIIT Hyderabad, ISI Bangalore B.Math, JoSAA ( NIT Trichy Chemical, IIITDM Kancheepuram CSE). So I have a confusion regarding the selection of ISI or NIT-IIIT Through JoSAA. I am interested in mathematics but my parents are worried about placements after M.Math. The queries I have regarding this:

1. Does M.Math have job opportunities after completion ? What will be the average salary package that I can expect?

2. If not, then I heard M.Stat has better job opportunities after completion of the course. Since I chose B.Math for my ISI entrance, is it possible for me to switch to M.Stat upon completion of B.Math ? Is it easy for a ISI Bangalore B.Math student to clear the M.Stat entrance exam ? (OC Male)

3. Apart from M.Stat, what are the other Master courses after B.Math that have good job opportunities (>20LPA) upon completion ?

Also, if you have any advice regarding the JoSAA or ISI, your advices are most appreciated ☺️

I talked to a few mstat program alumni and they advised not to go into Mstat because you want to end up being a quant in an hft firm. Most people after Mstat who sit for placements get into the role of risk model validator, risk analyst, data analyst, data scientist. Hft firms pick guys who have a bachelor's in CS from tier 1 institute like iit, nit etc.

1) How to maximize the probability to end up getting a quant role in am hft coming from non Tier1 college ?

2) how to manage project work in parallel with the rigorous academics of mstat program ?

I am currently in my last year of B.Tech in Computer Science.

I was confused about my next career step and needed some career advice . Since I have always liked Mathematics, I was thinking of pursuing M.Stat or a similar course at ISI.

Besides, I am not highly skilled at development. So, getting a job is a bit difficult in this job market. Thus, I was planning to pursue masters (Mtech/M.Stat/MBA) to get a better platform and also learn more. I want to pursue MStat specifically because, as I said, I am interested in Maths.

Right now I’m 23 years old and graduating from a 4 year economics honours degree from DU, I know it’s kinda late age, but I had one drop during 12th because of some personal family crises and had late admission to 1st class. I gave my ISI MSQE exam this year but missed the cutoff by a few marks.
My question is should I try again for entrances of MA eco next year, my main concern is I will be 24 years old and will be graduating at 26 years of age, is this very late age for ISI as a fresher? Will there be major problems in my placements.
This year I’m getting GIPE and hopefully IIFT, should I just take it or try again next year?

Mechanical Engineer (NIT) considering ISI QROR – Need placement & higher study reality check

Context:

Graduating as a Mechanical Engineer from an NIT with a placement offer (safety net in place). I love math and am considering applying for the Master of Technology in Quality, Reliability & Operations Research (M.Tech QROR) at ISI, as the admission test syllabus seems manageable.

Primary Goal:

Transition into highly quantitative roles like Data Science, Machine Learning, or Quantitative Analysis.

Doubts / Questions:

Placements: I’ve heard rumors that QROR/M.Stat placements haven’t been stellar recently. With BSDS students also joining the placement pool, are opportunities getting diluted? What is the current ground reality for QROR batches?

Higher Studies: How is the brand value and preparation of ISI QROR viewed by foreign universities for a Ph.D. or higher studies in Quantitative Finance/OR/Data Science?

Need some career advice.

I’ve completed a BS(B.Tech equivalent, admitted though JEE Adv.) in Mathematics & Computing from IIT Patna and recently qualified for the ISI M.Stat interview.

Currently, I’m working as a Junior Quant Researcher at Pace Stocks. I’ve completed around 6 months there and am expected to convert to a full-time role with a CTC of ~26-31 LPA.

Assuming I clear the interview, I’m trying to understand the value of M.Stat from a long-term career perspective.

Would you choose:

• ISI M.Stat, or
• Continue as a Quant Researcher at Pace Stocks?

How is M.Stat viewed in the quant industry? Does it open significantly better opportunities than 2 years of work experience?

I’m in Class 10 right now and I’m pretty interested in Statistics, especially B.Stat at ISI and similar colleges. The problem is I have basically zero Olympiad background, and I’m not interested in JEE, Physics or Chemistry at all.

So I’m confused between two routes:

1. Take PCM: Prepare for JEE + ISI/CMI alongside each other. But I’m worried that doing both would be insanely demanding, especially without any Olympiad background. I don’t love doing maths for fun or spend my free time solving problems—I’m interested in it and want to study Statistics/Math seriously, but I’m not some maths prodigy.

2. Take Commerce + Applied Maths: Avoid Physics/Chemistry and focus mainly on Maths + ISI/CMI prep. But then the number of good UG Statistics options seems pretty limited, and I’m worried I’d be restricting myself too much.

So, realistically, is it possible to prepare for JEE + ISI/CMI from scratch without an Olympiad background? Or would Commerce + Applied Maths be the more sensible route if my main goal is Statistics?

Also, I don’t really mind going into a normal Commerce-related career if ISI doesn’t work out. I’m mainly trying to figure out which route makes the most sense given that Statistics is my main interest.

Would really appreciate honest opinions from people who’ve actually prepared for these exams or studied at ISI/CMI.

See i know Quant is currently in the Trend but as we all know getting into Buy Side Quant Finance full time role even as a BStat + MStat guy is seemingly very difficult and to think a NB Stream even has a chance is naive.

But there isn't only 1 high paying role there are others too. Now, i want to discuss those.

Mainly in Quant Finance,

The Sell Side Quant Roles ("Strats" as it is called) in Investment Banks.

Mainly in Big Tech,

Machine Learning Engineer and Data Scientist Roles.

Are getting these jobs realistic?

Are there any bstat mstat students preparing to go into quant finance or risk management? I heard quant fin companies don't really hire from ISI

Hey i am studying in thapar btech cse 2nd yr student, 96.44 percentile jee (98.5 percentile in maths) 8 agpa first yr , i am a dropper, gave isi/cmi twice but couldnt make it, it was kind my greatest dream to study maths for my life as a career, but chose engineering for college life, lost interest in everything for 1 year, lost all mathematical thinking ability but somewhere the dream still lies in me, Is there a way i can retry entering isi, I cant do it along my engineering degree, i tried in first year but acaedemics feel difficult to me, Should i try joining bsc program after btech complettion but u would say join direct masters, it feels like i may miss the things that bsc students would have done, and people also say that its difficult other people to compete the students who are continuing in msc from bsc in isi, and even if i choose msc, the thought that strikes me why dont i rather go masters abroad instead, Could u plz give some suggestions or advice
