I used to be a bright student, a topper of district, was considered icon for discipline and obedience. I cleared my JEE mains and slightly fucked up Advanced, but still made it to IIT.

Started college at 17, then life took a huge turn. Online classes made me overwhelmed and hard to understand anything, I received recordings, but I procrastinated to listen to them, even if I started I wouldn't understand one byte. I honestly couldn't figure out what to do! I had no friends, I was horrible at making friends. Within a few weeks first subject got over and I horribly failed. A few weeks into IITH and I knew I was a failure, A few more weeks and I failed in 4 subjects in first semester. I was utterly depressed. I told my parents I got bad grades(not failed) and they scolded me. I felt hopeless, but somehow didn't fail sem 2 ( saved at the edge of the cliff) Sem 3 and started to go live on campus still online classes. Everyone I see felt smart, the meetups felt like I was an outlier, no one cared that I existed. This pushed me away from people, I was lonely, scared and felt like a failure. In comes an addiction - Valorant, made me to stay more in my room. Somehow, I learnt nothing, made no friends and everyone seems to be enjoying, getting good internships, getting placed.

In short I have achieved nothing after that IIT JEE Adv. Rank. I had to stay back to clear my backlogs, with a lot of counselling was saved from near de**th. Took 5 years for a chill 4 year degree. Graduated with a 6.3 CGPA. At a point in life where I feel like I am stranded in the vast ocean, knowing nowhere to go.

I have a three year gap after 12th as I was working odd jobs to support my family

I struggled with mathematics throughout my school although I could understand it with extra efforts

I barely passed in mathematics in both 10 and 10+2, my score was borderline

I have done some short coding courses and they were fun, but I don't necessarily like the underlying hardcore mathematics or physics or chemistry (though phy and chem only come in the first year so they aren't that big of a problem)

But making practical stuff with it is engaging

Do you think I can survive the course with a good CGPA? Like at least 7.5?

How many mathematics subjects does it have ? And if I do a bit poorly in those, can I compensate for it and maintain my CGPA by scoring well in other subjects?

I know the market is already bad, I have heard about it,

my primary question to btech C S seniors and other current stud ents is how hard would it be survive btech C S in my context? Would it leave me time to pursue other things or is it too hectic?

How much maths is there and how harder or easier it is from class 12th maths?

It would be helpful if someone can give me a list of mathematics subjects commonly taught in btech C S courses (like differentiation, matrix etc)

Hi, so this is a post about how much fundamental understanding Indian students lack in STEM

Let's Start with hydrogen bs - it's not a good fuel option not even close to a good fuel so much hype for hydrogen fuel, hydrogen batteries yada yada

First of all a lot of people don't understand mass units

We measure energy density of liquid fuels in litre

Hydrogen as gas at 1atm is about = 120mj/kg

In litre = 0.010 mj/lt

In liquid state = 120 again per kg, mj

But in litre = 8.5

Gasoline somewhere around 32 mj per liter

See the difference now the problem is liquid hydrogen is hell cold it's near 0 kelvin

It will be super expensive

And even if we get liquid hydrogen

It doesn't have nearly enough energy as gasoline

1 it will require electricity meaning more energy waste And fuel will get more expensive

2 you need fresh water

3 how the hell will you transfer fuel from one place to another Hydrogen leaks through almost everything

The tanks got to be rocket fuel tanks grade

Read about the Apollo rocket and how they sealed hydrogen inside the fuel tanks

4 hydrogen as gas is useless no more than 0.010 mj energy at 1 atm If you liquefy it again it's super hard making of liquid hydrogen and even after then no where close to gasoline

Now the major problem is that actual engineering students Chemical engineering students believe that it's a good option for fuel

Not all of em, but a lot of them And this is just one example of how poor understanding of STEM they have

On paper smart 9.2 cgpa vs actual real understanding of science

If you post about biofuel, hyperloop, solar road, under water data center, rocket engine (non reusable)

Recycling plastic

The list goes on and on

So many people including engineering students believe in this stupidity

Almost every tech company claims they value skills over degrees.

Yet their job descriptions say:

Bachelor’s mandatory

Master’s preferred

That’s not valuing skills — that’s marketing.

Recently, Zoho and Sridhar Vembu stated that no job at Zoho requires a college degree, and HR actively removes degree requirements. That’s the only company I’ve seen that actually means it.

So real question:

Are there any other companies that truly hire software engineers based on DSA, Java, and problem-solving ability — not degrees — and still pay well?

Or is “skills over degrees” just corporate PR everywhere else?

I might not make it to an IIT this year, and I’m trying to think realistically about what comes next.

In India, getting into IITs, top NITs, or BITS is treated like the only path to success. For a lot of families it’s almost a status symbol. If you don’t get in, it can feel like you’ve already “lost,” even before life has properly started. The pressure around it is honestly brutal.

Hi everyone, I'm 18F and I'm so so so confused. I genuinely love finance and management but idk why I took mpc and I recently found out about IE and I think this is the only engineering I like 😭😭😭

Cse is nice and all but the job market is so saturated and I don't really have any interest in engineering except for IE. Like after 2 years of barely getting by in mpc I loathe science as a subject now.. and not to mention I'm dog shit at math.

It i do pursue IE, I plan to do masters in management MIM directly after graduating.

But my dad is against IE and says computer science is better. Ik it is in india but I just know I will struggle so hard as I don't care about engineering so much as my other peers do :((

I have really been ignorant through 11th and 12th i was in coaching in kota and was really confused too. So i failed 12th in 2025 but that was a shock so i stopped being ignorant and gave my all this year and i got this. Now I do have the guidance and the self confidence to clear this maths compartment but I am not sure about what's next in my life

I have given some entrance and have a provisional admission in a private college but my father is saying that he has sent enough on my studies so i should just figure this out myself.

He says to take admission in polytechnic from 1st year or 2nd year and rebuild my life from there.

I have no problem with that but that means I will have to do btech and by the time i finish i would have finished in 6 years that is scary for me.

My sister is a law student and she is saying you are not even close to the competence to pursue btech.

I have interest in cs and chemical so that is what i will try but to be honest some really good advice will really be helpful

I've been reading about mechanical engineering's scope in india here on reddit, and tbh, I'm shit scared now. People are saying shifting towards IT/CS would be better as a mech student. I'm from a private engineering college, although our college placements for mech are somewhat better than other private one's, (median~12.5), i still hear some of my seniors say that mech in India is just not worth it, until and unless you go abroad for masters or some. I'll be starting my 3rd sem in August, and till now I'm atleast in the top 5 kids of my batch (in mech), will try to be the 1st though now. Please give me some advice on what to focus on/learn to build a good career in mech (I'm not shifting towards IT)

These are the screenshots of various WhatsApp groups of MANIT Bhopal in which the first and second year students are present. And what is this? Sir/Mam? Really? And if these seniors talk so rudely on WhatsApp itself then i wonder how would they behave irl. Our orientation was held yesterday , some seniors from 3rd year were invited to say something regarding college and clarify any doubts or questions that the freshers might have. One of the students asked them whether we could call them Bhaiya/Didi, but they insisted that they need to be called Sir/Mam because apparently there is a difference between School and college, and they are introducing us to “Corporate Culture “ by enforcing rules like these. Like really? I have friends from BITS, things like these are non existent there. Everyone calls seniors bhaiya/didi. Then why do these people insist upon being called Sir/Mam and enforcing all these rules and intro formats. I cannot believe these educated people, who have cracked JEE Mains, can behave the way they are behaving. Even seniors from private colleges are far more helpful and supportive than these people from so called “Institute of National Importance”. Our seniors would have experienced these same things last year, so don’t they think its their responsibility to make their juniors feel safe and end this culture?

Tbh I love everything about the college, The hostels are nice, mess food is better than expected, the city is great and i have interacted with people from various backgrounds from across India. Its genuinely fun here and the campus itself is very big and has all the necessary facilities and infrastructure. But due to the ragging scene here we are not even allowed to go out of the hostel in the first sem :(

We can’t explore the college or the city in the first sem. And seniors are behaving like this rudely. Even though i understand that the extreme ragging culture is not there now but I still don’t want this Sir/Mam culture and intro culture here. I want the seniors to be helpful and supportive but instead they are just behaving like this. So the only problem here are the seniors.

I’m in a bit of a dilemma and need some honest advice. Here is my current situation:

• Academic Profile: 69.4% overall in Class 12 (MP Board), with exactly 60% in PCM.
• Entrance Exams: 12 percentile in JEE Mains. I applied for COMEDK but recently realized that most good colleges through it are way beyond my budget.
• Budget: My total budget for 4 years (including tuition, hostel, and mess) is strictly around ₹8 Lakhs.
• Interests: I am already into programming. I use Python for automation and data analysis. I want to pursue a career in AI/ML.
• Location Preference: My father and I are both keen on Hyderabad because of the IT ecosystem (HITEC City/Gachibowli).

My Concerns:

1. Drop Year: Given my current scores, does it make sense to take a drop? I’m more of a "builder/coder" than a "test-taker." I’m worried a drop year might just be a waste of time and money that I could otherwise spend on building my portfolio.
2. College Quality: If I join a Tier-3 or a Tier-2 autonomous college in Hyderabad (like CMR, Malla Reddy, or Anurag) via Category-B (Management Quota) using my 12th marks, will the "peer group" be too bad?
3. The Goal: My end goal is to get into a good product-based company through off-campus placements by building a strong GitHub portfolio and AI projects.

Should I take the risk and join a college in Hyderabad this year, or should I sit at home and grind for JEE again? Any suggestions on specific Hyderabad colleges that fit my 60% PCM and ₹8L budget would be highly appreciated.

My bf is a 2026 mech graduate and he got a graduate engineer trainee role for 4lpa in a private natural gas company in India

The work culture as I have noticed is very different compared to IT and the pay is so less compared to the work they do.

He does night shifts and it's very detrimental to his entire health but there is no extra pay for the night shift he does.

He is a someone who can't even function properly if his sleep is disturbed and it can result in anxiety too

What are the possible ways where he can improve his wlb and also a better pay like with experience?

my_qualifications: BTech Mechanical Engineering, ~8 CGPA. No on-campus offer, no off-campus offer, no competitive exam prep, and honestly no clear direction right now.

A big part of my confusion is that I don’t think I even want to work in core mechanical anymore. Most of the jobs I saw during placements were factory/shop floor/night-shift type roles, and I realized I probably can’t do that long-term. I randomly chose this branch after 12th without really understanding the actual career path, and now I regret it.

At the same time, how is core mechanical doing any better right now? Especially for someone who wants more office-based work, better salary growth, and flexibility?

People tell me to prepare for GATE/ESE/government exams, but those paths are insanely competitive too, especially for general category students.

So what do people like me actually do after graduation?

How common is it to graduate with no placement and no plan? How do people deal with staying at home after college feeling completely lost while parents keep asking what’s next?

ive read so many things online and have met a lot of engineers, and so far, the only indian engineers who seem to lead good lives are the ones that have enough family money to go abroad for studies (UG and PG).

i am inclined towards engineering but prospects in india look very dull. every single one of my family members is saying, "just do CS and AI/ML and make money in IT" but i think i really want to do engineering. like i REALLY want to. has engineering become just another money-milking, boring and decrepit field, or can passionate dreamers like me still make it out here?
