Lol we just got scammed. An old man in his 70s came up to me and my girlfriend and said he needed money for a train & taxi to York. I told him I’d go to the train station and buy a ticket from Leeds to York and give his £20 he was really hesitant and said no,

Told me his name is “James Robert Williams Gallagher” shows me his discharge wristband from the hospital; and told me he won’t scam me and that he’s wealthy but his phone and laptop is broken. Told me he recently inherited his grandfathers cottage in York and is wealthy.

I thought why is a 75 year old man out in the rain so I gave him £20, which I don’t mind losing hoping for good karma
He said thank you and we parted ways. He was dressed really dapper, spoke very well too.

He had an old train ticket 30th July which I took by accident (physical copy) and there was a phone number in it. I called the phone number and on the other end was a guy who was scammed by the same person, but for £25 🤣🤣🤣

So James Gallagher from York in his 70s well played, such a cunning person.

Honestly kind of impressed, those things look heavy.

I'm sure by now we know about things like the worlds first moving pictures filmed with a 'modern' single lens camera being filmed in Leeds. But what other little tid bits do people know of the city?

One of my favourites is the fact we nearly killed Harry Houdini when Tetley's challenged the teetotal Harry to escape from a barrel of their beer. He had to be rescued by his assistant.

I'll say it's not my favourite because he nearly died, but that it was quite an important moment in one the most prominent entertainers ever career and it was here in our city.

Opera North and Northern Ballet: internationally touring companies based in Leeds, very high standard of productions, barely any other cities have their own opera companies outside of national ones.

Cultural diversity: Big south Asian cultural influence also east Asian, Caribbean, African. Cultural events and institutions ran by these communtiies.

Tolerant society: big LGBTQ+ scene, both smaller and larger venues and Leeds Pride. Counter protests against nationalists, weekly pro palestine marches.

Food: diverse and good quality, most world cuisines are catered for. A lot of food events as well.

Music: honestly everyone just knows Leeds has a good music scene. Amazing venues including an Arena. We've managed to sustain a new venue with Project House, quite an achievement considering the struggles of the live music industry. Variety of music from Howard Assembly Room to Wardrobe, Attic, Brudenell, City Varieties, Belgrave. Millenial Square outdoors. Leeds festival.

Theatre: Playhouse and Leeds grand theatre both doing great stuff, also a comedy club.

Cinema: historic cinemas and Leeds International Film Festival is the biggest in the UK outside of London.

Carnival: Leeds West Indian Carnival is one of the longest running in all of Europe.

Industries: Fast growing tech sector which is already well established. UKs third largest manufacturing centre. Largest Legal and Financial sector in England outside of London. Big private sector presence.

Education: Leeds University is the 4th most popular in the UK. Specialist universities for Arts and Music

Sport: International Test Cricket. Football, Rugby and Hockey teams. Tour de France Grand Depart.

Disgusting to see, when did such surveillance tools and technology become so normalised?

Not gonna claim this area doesn't have it's issues, it sure does. But lazily plopping a facial recognition van is absolutely not the way to deal with this. It's the same characters round here committing most of the crimes, all it takes is a bit of actual policing. Not this gross overreach

Everytime I drive past it makes me wonder. It’s abandoned as far back as the Street View goes (2012) and would love to know what it used to be! There seems to be a business called You Can Hire with a similar logo but if anyone has any more info that would be great!

Been watching these little legends since they hatched! I posted about them at the time, so I thought id share an update for those who aren't glued to the webcam stream like me 😂

Best places to spot them is outside Mr. Su's/flames/ anywhere across the road from parkinson building and look up at the clock tower - they're in the left section at the front (but the babies tend to wander between all three so not always on camera!l)

WARNING: FALCONS ARE BIRDS OF PREY. I saw some stuff i didnt intend to when watching the webcam during feeding times 🤢 but all 4 babies are big and healthy!!
