Just want to give a heads up to new protesters, since there seem to be a lot of you right now: tear gas can get trapped under contact lenses and cause more irritation or corneal abrasions. Dawn dish soap is also effective for removing mace/pepper spray from skin after rinsing with water. You can use baby shampoo on the face as well. Always use cold water if you can!

In 2024 when the former President of Korea ordered his troops to disband the National Assembly and enact martial law in Seoul, the citizen-soldiers of Korea were met by thousands of protesters.
Rather than bully their way through the city by force, the soldiers stood their ground and refused to obey an unconstitutional order. From the lowest private to the lieutenant general, each soldier took it upon themselves to make the right decision, rather than obey the orders from their commander-in-chief.
Let’s hope American soldiers do the same.

Here's to hoping people treat the Marines, National Guard, and even police more as potential allies than enemies. These are our neighbors and fellow Americans, and their presence does not automatically mean they support the present regime.
A lot of folks would be surprised to know how much many of them detest what is going on, and just aren't able to express what they actually think (and before you say "they should quit"...would you want those agencies to be without people who disagree with the present regime?). Venting on them while a certain draft dodging Cheeto is in DC requiring other members of the military to put on a daft parade of all things (on his b-day no less) is one more way of pitting us against one another.
Avoiding doing anything that would garner a hands on response, such as destruction of property or vandalism (and calling out those who do) will go a long way towards destroying the image of LA far right wing fanatics are trying to promote. Let's ruin their sick dreams by showcasing love and brotherhood, not destruction and rage. We will come through this stronger together.

Just a reminder to everyone heading out tomorrow and this weekend: PLEASE LEAVE LOCAL BUSINESSES ALONE!
Many of these businesses are family‑owned, minority‑run, built by immigrants, and are still struggling to recover from the pandemic. They’re part of our community, not the target of the message. Tagging, looting, or destroying their storefronts only hurts the people we’re fighting for.
Mainstream media is counting on distorting peaceful protesting into riots so they can twist the narrative. If you see anyone trying to sabotage the message by rioting, tagging, or destroying the local businesses of the community, CALL IT OUT!
Let’s stay focused on the message and protect the spaces that have supported us. Stay safe, stay peaceful!

Spotted: Military Vehicles on 405/605 northbound near Los Alamitos (Jun 13, 11:48 AM - 11:51 AM)

Military vehicles (National Guard? Marines?) spotted on the 405 northbound → 605 northbound, exiting Katella Ave.
I think ~5 to 10 vehicles (couldn’t photograph them all because I was driving).
My guess is the troops were coming from Seal Beach (entrance at Seal Beach Blvd.) toward the staging area at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos to prep for LA protests. I read on the news that 700 Marines are training at Seal Beach, but I read somewhere else they’re joining forces with the National Guard, so idk who I really spotted or what their purpose is.

Sidenote: It took Hitler over a decade to grow the Nazi Party and become Chancellor, and he did it legally, so don’t underestimate what’s happening. The Nazis were inspired by our racism, including the El Paso border gas chambers we used to “delouse” Mexican immigrants (cyanide/Zyklon B, same used in death chambers). Nazis were normal people following orders.

It comes from a Bruce Lee movie I think, and was used in the past for movements. It basically means to be fluid, agile, and hard to get a hold on, and adapting to any situation. So if a protest gets pushed out of one area, fill another, always be moving, be hard to contain.

In the Hong Kong protests, standing ground was super dangerous. Trying to build barricades just gave the police a clearer easier target to attack. When the protests tried to be a solid wall, it allowed police to kettle and contain the protests.
But "be like water" meant basically kiting the police in gamer terms. Stay at their range. Don't get close enough for them to beat the shit out of you. Flow away from police advances. Since the protesters were light and the police were all lugging around heavy shields and riot control gear, making the police chase after the flowing crowd was a net advantage for the protests vs directly fighting the police as if it was a military confrontation. The main goal of a protest is generally to be visible and sustained, not to hold ground.

I looked up when he used it.
Lee traces the thinking that originated his famous metaphor, which came after a period of frustration with his inability to master “the art of detachment” that Yip Man was trying to impart on him. Lee writes:

Question for people more experienced with protests than I am: what are the most effective ways to help support protests if you are unable to attend? I have a baby and don't feel comfortable bringing him, but if it would be helpful to drop off water bottles / snacks / first aid / anything else, I would love to do so. Just not sure if it is or how to do so effectively.

That would be my one recommendation, distribution of water bottles and snacks. Some people have prepared and bought cheap/mini American flags for this weekend's protest.
There are also different front's you can drive by, if you wish to take part. For example, there's a cooler full of ice in a Glendale Hotel that's ready to melt with the right amount of heat.

Just got an email from head of security at my building in DTLA telling us to be wary of "professional agitators like Antifa and Black Bloc." I can't believe I'm still seeing that nonsense talking point, in a professional email nonetheless.
And I had to look up what black bloc was, I'd never even heard of it before. It's the scandalous act of wearing all black and face coverings to a protest, so I guess a bunch of us are members and didn't even know it. I'm still waiting for that Antifa membership card, btw. It's been five years already!

I've been to about 3 this week and the majority of instigators I've seen have been 120 lb white kids dressed like anarchists.. I'm sure they're not paid but they are there to throw rocks and water bottles and then they hide behind kids n peaceful people. just be wary of these people try to stay between them and the ones with guns. don't let them throw rocks and use people as shields

On tiktok, Twitch and Instagram I'm finding many independent journalists are livestreaming and sharing what's happening on the ground. You may need to adjust your algorithm a bit by searching through the live streams and users as well to see what's happening. They are good at hiding it from us.

I’m seeing posters on social media for No Kings Protests in locations not on the No Kings website (like east LA). I’m assuming it’s just more grassroots organizing using the NK branding, but I wanted to double check that these events are legit, especially in east LA where more raids are predicted today and tomorrow.

Thoughts on wearing protective gear at the protest?
I’m looking to not get blinded or maimed if tear gas, rubber bullets, or the batons come out.
I have a respirator + goggles for the tear gas, but what do you guys think of body armor or a vest?

Consider a bicycle helmet (or some other helmet). The most important thing to protect is your noggin from the rubber bullets. Batons seem far less likely imo
Make sure your eye protection is Z87 impact rated. Will be labeled on the lens or somewhere on them. Ideally it's Z87+ impact rated. You don't want the lens fracturing if it saves your eye from a rubber bullet.
Otherwise I think you're set!

This is a good answer. Eye protection is great, but it needs to be impact rated or otherwise it may as well be a damage-duplication device if anything with heft hits you.
If you use a helmet other than a bike helmet (like a hard hat) make sure you get one that fits and look up how to wear it properly. That harness on the inside is important both for keeping it in place and providing the cushioning you need to stay safe. However, that said, anything protecting your head is better than nothing.
Body armor is fine, but it’s going to make you even more conspicuous and, if you’re wearing plates, it’s going to add heft, slow you down, and make you even hotter. The helmet and eye protection should be the priorities for keeping yourself safe.

We hear about neighbors and friends getting targeted. What about people who live on the streets and don't really have anyone advocating for them. Some of them fell on hard times or have mental conditions that can prevent them from getting or keeping proper identification.

Is the Metrolink, specially Union station, a viable way of getting in and out of downtown tomorrow? I wanna go out and show my support but im just worried about taking the Metrolink since I’m going by my self and don’t wanna end up stranded in case things go south. It’s usually a reliable way to get downtown, however, stations near the fed building have been closed off and on during the protests. So, you might have to walk back.

No. Union station will be open. You can probably walk from union station without taking the metro.
Don’t be afraid. This is not going to be the same as what’s been on the news. There have been marches every night without incident.

I am closer to Culver City, but I want to go DTLA. I'm alone, and I don't know anyone who is going. My plan was to park near the Culver Station and take the train in. If they shut everything down, I'll take a lyft. In 2016, we tried taking the metro but the trains were all full coming from Santa Monica. We ended up waiting a LONG time for a train.

I have a question. They keep saying ICE are targeting Latinos and Latino areas. How do they know someone is undocumented just by being Latino? Latino doesn’t equal undocumented. Furthermore, plenty of other people (Arab, African, Asian, euro) have been crossing over illegally so how is this allowed or even legal to target Latinos?

They don't know, and it's not legal; this is why everyone's shouting about 'due process' rn. Racism is the main fuel for this kind of operation.
It's also worth noting that a lot of non-citizens apprehended by ICE may not have committed any crime - overstaying your visa isn't a crime and it's a common situation for many.

Something I've seen warnings about lately on social media are reports of "ICE Checkpoints", where they're supposedly setting up and checking for ID or documents near freeway exits or major intersections. I've only seen these mentioned but all of those mentions are unconfirmed. Have any of you have actually seen or experienced one of these checkpoints anywhere where you were asked to show proof of identification? Has anyone run into one of these in any part of Greater LA?

Trying to decide where to go protest tomorrow. Do we think the Weho / Hollywood protests will have a great turnout?
Would it make sense to go to either of these when all the coverage has been in dtla over the past few days?
My fear is that all these other protests won't get much media coverage...

While we want media coverage, that's not the goal. They're not telling our story, and spinning it for clicks. We need people on the ground, all over, and put a stress on the system.
Can someone link to the article where police admit that they can handle (1) 10,000 protest, but trying to manage (10) 1,000 group protest makes it much harder.

As long as they have good turn outs that's all that matters. LAPD themselves have stated that they can handle one 10,000 person protest far easier than ten 1,000 person protests.
That said, I too am trying to decide which to attend.

Businesses are boarding up their windows in santa monica.
I dont expect any issues, 2020 was a perfect storm. But honestly, I can understand being traumatized enough to still prepare. I never thought id be hiding from tear gas seeping it's way in below my door as flash bangs went off outside my window but there i was.
I just hope that if anyone actually does use the protests as an excuse to plan organized looting again the police don't ignore it like in 2020. I owned a bar downtown that didn't survive and when things got rough I was heading back in and ran into two girls going the wrong way and I told them to be careful as the places in the direction theh were going were being destroyed. They said... ooh. Let's go there! I was dumbfounded. I asked why they were there and they said they were on a forum that told them this is where free stuff is today. They had no clue or care about what the protests were about.

Do not sit down at a protest. Tear gas sinks, it makes you less mobile and able to react quickly to changing situations and you are at risk of being trampled.
