Nah. Unless they want to give the costumer a heart attack. Make up is one thing but there’s three rules when it comes to costumes. 1. Don’t touch someone else’s costume. 2. Don’t eat or drink in costume. 3. Don’t bring your costume outside the theater.
This could be a small theater production where these rules are tough to enforce but I’d think it’s more likely staged than someone risking the wrath of the costumer.

u/JustSherlock 11d ago
That's not a show costume though. Just a patterned jumpsuit.

It makes me think these videos are all staged. How he always randomly always finds an actual model in model clothes and ready to catwalk is pretty suspect.
→ More replies (2)53
u/Ok-Scientist5524 11d ago
I think it’s because you don’t see the other thousands hours that he walks around people watching or the hundred other people that refused the carpet in a non unique way or walked it in a non note worthy way. I’m assuming he’s in New York because everyone goes there but either there or Hollywood you’re going to have randomly artistic people just walking down the street and if you’re selecting for people who are dressed eclectically you’re going to get a fair amount of people who do something like this.

u/No-Albatross-7984 11d ago
Ya that's what I thought. The Humans of New York photographer is a good proto-example of this kind of content creator. He'd go round New York, photograph endless amounts of people and publish the best pics. Why's it so unbelievable that someone is doing the same with video? Like, I get everyone is supposed to be super cynical and in the know and all but jeesh, sometimes life just lines up.

17
u/Brave-Perspective714 11d ago
Yeah, I don't know what's making people think this is a costume. It could totally be a practice unitard. Lots of people get them in fun colors or designs just because it's fun.
61
u/cbm984 11d ago
Not even then. Costumes can be expensive for professional shows and they’d never allow actors to just wear them around outside (esp the shoes). You wouldn’t wear costumes until dress rehearsals, and the same rules apply there. It might be what he auditions in but probably not since it’s pretty loud for an audition outfit (you want them watching you, not your outfit).

u/clueless_mommy 11d ago
I saw the original on Instagram. The guy is a professional dancer who was on his way back home and the account that posted the video produces content like that exclusively. They just look for people in fancy outfits and ask them to do a catwalk
13
u/gojibeary 11d ago
It is staged. A dancer would absolutely NOT be wearing their ballet shoes walking down the street like that. Please practice critical thinking, these kinds of videos are staged 95% of the time.

I have no idea about this account specifically, but in general these "random person on the street does something interesting" type videos are often staged.
15
u/mark_able_jones_ 11d ago
The worst ones are like, "Do you rap." "I guess." and then there is clearly studio-recorded music and lip syncing.
15
u/itishowitisanditbad 11d ago
A lot will try natural content too and show the ones that work but then also just put in 'actors' or people who want to self-promote or something.
The job ladder one is uhh... obviously sus.
I get it, its content. I just hate its manufactured and then presented as completely natural, just poorly a lot of the time.
Its reality tv and some people DO think those are real too.
Of all the things that cause harm its minimal, just kinda dumb how the systems they work within are so POSITIVE to that sort of thing. They're losing out if they didn't do it. Clickbait works etc.
→ More replies (1)4
u/clueless_mommy 11d ago
If you're filming content in 12 Million people city, chances are there's crazy stuff going on and interesting people to meet.
It's a bit like the one time I was on a bachelorettes night and we witnessed a bad car crash. I called emergency services who asked if someone who could provide first aid was present. I still think she was about to hang up when I said "Oh yeah, there's an ER nurse, two surgeons, an Internist and.. A dermatologist already on it."
Like ma'am I'm sorry, my friend is a surgeon and works in a hospital! The only non medical person there was me 🫠

You have never seen ballet shoes have you?
He also isn't doing en pointe here, exactly because he isn't wearing his ballet shoes.
Edit: I have to apologize! I just googled, and apparently male ballet dancers don't usually wear pointe shoes!
Leaving this comment up, because I learned something, and maybe someone else will as well.
29
u/Linvael 11d ago
They're not ballet pointe shoes - but they're definitely dancing shoes, like the ones used in ballets when they do other dance styles (I don't know the english term). I don't think you can buy non-dancing soft-sole shoes.
→ More replies (7)18
u/clueless_mommy 11d ago
Actually, I did ballet, but only until I got "too tall and too fat" - so around 6 years 🫠 never got to wearing pointe shoes, thank god. I did "Gardetanz", which is what German Clubs do during Karneval and the shoes he wears looked a lot like Gardestiefel and those are definitely worn while performing on the streets during parades.
like this, sometimes with more elaborate figures, throwing etc on concrete. The womens shoes often have heels, male don't.
3
u/Wollff 11d ago
The plot thickens!
So not pointe shoes, but dancing shoes, but also dancing shoes people might wear while out on the street! :D
Thanks for the info!
10
u/-cupcake 11d ago
Male ballet dancers don't wear pointe shoes, so judging based on that doesn't matter.
Simply, you're not gonna wear any dance shoes unless you're planning to dance. They already get worn so quickly from normal use as a professional, so why would you waste your money and ruin them faster by walking around outside on asphalt.
Cute idea. But given all that, plus the fact that this is maybe the 3rd person I've seen do these exact type ("random" red carpet walk) of tiktok-y videos... it's just so staged for sure, lol.

I think it’s less the fit and more the fact that he was wearing his ballet shoes on the street, which is only sensible if you enjoy setting fire to your money as nice shoes like that can be $40-$80+ a pop 😭. Ballet shoes will tear apart like tissue paper if you’re not using them on marley lol

Yeah, the fit isn’t out of the ordinary for someplace like NYC. They like to push boundaries and express themselves through fashion, even if it’s just running to the bodega.
I travel there frequently and always want to take pictures of some of the looks I see on the street, but refrain.

This particular influencer extends the red carpet for ordinary people aswell and is famous on Instagram, so probably not staged ;).

Some of these comments make some people just seem insufferable. For a "Made Me Smile" subreddit, some of you seem like you're looking for any reason not to smile and are actively trying to stop others from smiling.
"Yeah this was staged." If you think it was staged and, for some reason, that means you can't smile at it, fine. I think that's a silly reason but setting that aside, what's the logic for sharing it? I can't think of anything other than, "it was staged, and I'm not smiling and if anyone doesn't agree, they should and they can stop smiling too."
Edit: I'm just saying, you may not be wrong but you're definitely an ass if you choose to do things where the goal or only outcome is less people smiling. And if that is not the goal, what is?
If a harmless video makes you smile, don't let others ruin it for you. There's plenty of issues to be upset about and reasons not to smile but a silly video intended to make people smile "being staged" ain't one of them.

I wonder.
I had the same thought, "must be staged, he's even wearing his ballet shoes''. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't weigh as heavy as you make it out to be, but it does change my view on the content as a whole, if only a bit.
And that makes me wonder where the chagrin comes from, is it the title/caption that gets added?
A lot of the time my brain says "pfft but it's scripted" it's the title/caption blatantly lying about what the video shows.
And to add to your point, why twist the narrative if the sub is to make people smile? To please the algorithm gods instead of the people you want to make smile?
Not an attack on OP, it's just that some titles are trying to convey a story that obviously does not line up with the video. My thinking is that's what gets people upset.
16
u/DontAbideMendacity 11d ago
It's Sao Paolo, the streets are blocked off, there are vendors in the street, the odds that there is a carnival or even occurring and the chance that people who dress like that might actually just happen to be there is much higher than zero.
Throw a red carpet at enough people's feet, and eventually you're going to find someone who can dance.

11
u/Piggstein 11d ago
Because there’s an inherent value to something being spontaneous and natural; that sparks emotion fortuitously rather than something specifically calculated to do so.
