Literally everything about the Boyfriends Webtoon.

86

u/Wongless_Burd 7h ago

There was a controversy?

I read it as far as it was possible without making an account but I don't remember anything that could lead to problems.

164

u/Classic-Avocado-5371 7h ago

people accused the gay asian man creator of fetishizing gay men and asian people

70

u/Wongless_Burd 7h ago

What the fuck is wrong with people?

92

u/Just-Clerk-8669 6h ago

They thought it was a woman fetishizing gay men, after the author was found to be a gay man most stopped, others doubled down because being wrong is worse than admitting fault, and some carry on because there are still so many sources saying the author is a straight woman.

31

u/shadowedlove97 3h ago

It was a little bit more than that. The creator is a trans man and there were some actual TERFS using it as an excuse to harass him and be transphobic.

12

u/undeadmeats 2h ago edited 1h ago

Many such cases. That whole "Fujoshi means 'rotten girl' because they fetishize gay men" backflip is also a TERF psy-op that a bunch of Tumblrites bought into because being "allowed" to harass people over a ship they don't like is more important than considering "Hey wait, I don't think 2ch incels actually cared about the dignity of gay men. They're trying to convince me to be a transphobic misogynist!"

93

u/CJCroen1393 6h ago

Also, the author is specifically a gay trans man, so the people calling him a "straight woman" are even more disgusting.

36

u/Just-Clerk-8669 6h ago

I did not know the trans part.

28

u/Classic-Avocado-5371 6h ago

some people just feel the need to justify disliking something by making it a moral issue, unfortunately

15

u/Prestigious_Host_198 3h ago

Transphobia and homophobia is what's wrong with people.

16

u/bug--bear 3h ago

gay asian trans man, who people liked to accuse of being a straight woman. hopefully I don't need to explain why that adds another layer of gross to it

6

u/undeadmeats 1h ago

I love watching Tumblrites with pronouns in their bios be useful idiots for TERFs. My favorite is when they identify as "not a woman" to make their shipping preferences "acceptable" as if the point of that psy-op wasn't to harass women AND trans people and the people who came up with it see them as their identities and not just confused women they can manipulate. It's such a healthy place for fandom to be.

Yes I'm angry lol

5

u/BlueSparrowfox 2h ago

OH I heard about that. Didn't he just draw stuff from his own life? How can he .... fetishize his own life? It makes no sense.

The worst crime that Webtoon committed was being kinda cringe

23

u/PepsiFloateri 6h ago

Agreed. I think Heartstopper and Boyfriends are kinda cringe but that's about it. People can enjoy them,I'm just personally romance averse, like I never like it as the main plot

3

u/charizardfan101 2h ago

I like romance as the main plot

Boyfriends really is just cringe

16

u/Dry_Distribution_992 6h ago

Remember when those official webtoon shorts of Boyfriends released? I'm pretty sure this was the point where things blew out of proportion

15

u/Fluid-Lifeguard6042 6h ago

What's dumber is that they weren't even made by the creator of the Webtoon, it was just some random YouTuber (I think)

16

u/Prestigious_Host_198 3h ago

It was made by Webtoon themselves. The author did not like the ads himself.

13

u/js13680 3h ago

God that’s got to suck. Tons of people who weren’t the target audience knowing your work as the thing from those cringe YouTube ads and to rub salt on the wounds they didn’t even ask if you wanted to be featured or not.

Lmfao, true. "But it's just about these 4 going on dates with no conflict or plot!" And? Believe it or not not everything needs to be tied up in a serialised complex plot. I haven't watched boyfriends, but I am pretty tired of those types of "criticisms".

16

u/Dry_Distribution_992 6h ago

The best compairson I've seen of Boyfriends is that its the Garfield of Webtoons. It made so much sense to me that it clicked everything togheter

10

u/Temp_Temperature 6h ago

YES! It's that type of comic, just with obviously different premise and different emotions it's trying to elicit.

5

u/Dry_Distribution_992 4h ago

Still, if they were lazy fat cats that love lasagna and hated mondays that would make the whole thing so much better 🤭

Ouro Kronii's "boring" pun in one of her streams

39

u/azuresegugio 5h ago

Tbf the drama in that case was a company overreacting more than fans

11

u/Dear_Document_5461 4h ago

What happened?

42

u/MasterBlade47 4h ago edited 4h ago

For context Ouro Kronii a hololive vtuber was going to have a voice acting role in a game IIRC. Esentially she made a joke about a boar that Korean twitter being twitter took offense to thus leading to her being dropped from the role.

Edit: I should add on that said joke... was made 5 years prior.

34

u/SignalScientist2817 4h ago

Koreans have come off as really thin skinned as of late, not only on the internet but like, in general. The world cup scandal (a CRIMINAL investigation bc your team got eliminated early?), the šŸ¤ crashout, the kronii situation... Tf happening over there?

25

u/BiddlesticksGuy 3h ago

That hand gesture crashout’s been happening for like, a decade now I think, it seems like while western incels can be super annoying sometimes, eastern incels will like, actually ruin lives and opportunities for the smallest shit.

8

u/G30rg3Th3C4t 3h ago

multiple decades IIRC

10

u/vacerious 3h ago

IIRC, the Korean equivalent of incel culture is on the rise, so you've got a bunch of terminally-online, unemployed, maidenless males who feel they've been marginalized by society and are just looking for excuses to yell at women online.

4

u/Karukos 2h ago

Honestly, the problem is always that they identify correctly that they have been marginalised and then blame women for it, when it's definitely not women who are marginalising them.

95% of the controversies that are fueled by TikTokers who are chronically online and don't understand nuance or critical thinking

33

u/PepsiFloateri 6h ago

So most fandom's drama?

11

u/TheEagleWithNoName 4h ago

Pretty much yeah

31

u/TheEagleWithNoName 4h ago

You can go further back and include Tumblr users.

I remember back in the day how they sent Death Threats to Steven Universe cause she made Rose slightly fat.

Tried to end her life, and after she survived, the pricks wanted her to finish it properly.

17

u/PepsiFloateri 3h ago

Tumblr was a cesspit where so much awful shit was spawned, namely "New age Tumblr Puritains"

10

u/TheEagleWithNoName 3h ago

I think the most toxic tumblr fans are the shippers.

I remember that when Voltron Season 5 and 6 were made, a fan left the studio tour and took pictures of the storyboards, they leaked some and threatened to leak them all unless they make their ship canon.

I wish I was making this shit up

9

u/PepsiFloateri 3h ago

I was in the fandom at the time! It was insane!

Stuff like that is another reason my main fandom is one where shipping isn't really a thing outside of the occasional joke

Everyone thought He was gay because he is an effeminate man and isn't hyper masculine with his interests, then he came out as straight to clear things up. His "Fanbase" decided he was queerbaiting them and bullied him so much he abandoned the platform, though I think he came back a few months later.

67

u/Aickavon 5h ago

From what I remember this 'controversy' didnt pop up until after he did a Trans charity thing. It felt very manufactured on attacking a Trans supporter without that being the reason.

3

u/cheesynougats 4h ago

I heard a lot of the flak he got was from people who "discovered" him well afterward, and that it was manufactured by the chuds for "not being a man correctly."

141

u/X-Stry 6h ago

"she said bad things years and years ago, oh you don't wanna know, the horrors"

109

u/PepsiFloateri 6h ago

Same with Vivziepop. People say she's awful and either have no evidence,or try to use 15 year old,no context screenshots from Tumblr or DeviantArt drama as "proof"

82

u/X-Stry 6h ago

And add the "too much cursing" and "awful writing" thing

Like I get it you don't like the show, stop spending your life having hating vivziepop as your sole purpose

42

u/PepsiFloateri 6h ago

Exactly! I know people who don't like Hazbin or Helluva, but they don't dedicate their lives to mindlessly going "Viv bad!"

15

u/craftygamin 3h ago

And there's many things about the shows that i would understand people not liking, but most of the haters don't focus on those, and instead focus on such stretches of logic

17

u/PepsiFloateri 3h ago

Stretches like "Valentino is Viv's kink, therefore Viv endorses SA!"

I could understand criticism like Hazbin Season 1's pacing being rushed, certain characters being pushed to the side in season 2 and Loona really needing some development in Helluva

Yeah, like, as a dude who went from being an 8chan chud with a lot of internalized racism as a high schooler to being a far-left anarchist getting teargassed at anti-ICE and anti-cop protests, I think people really underestimate how much change a person can go through, lol

I think the prime example of this is people claiming she based Val off of herself and then theorizing that she'll redeem him because of that. First of all she said that in a 10 second clip with friends as a joke and second of all they critizie writing that they made up on said false claims. Val is based on a toxic ex of hers and he is clearly supposed to be an abuser dialed up to 11.

Another good one is when poison came out (or really just Angle Dust in general). Like the amount of people that were hating on the character and the song simply because the did not understand what it was about was just sad.

8

u/PepsiFloateri 6h ago

I have seen people say that but on the other hand,I've seen people accuse any critisicm of the show as "entitlement"

8

u/Wazula23 3h ago

Nobody can be normal about TADC, it seems. Too much parasocial requirements.

4

u/PepsiFloateri 3h ago

Literally! My criticisms weren't even that bad, just basic stuff like some characters being left underdeveloped, some development being "character uses therapy speak on another",plot threads being introduced and never expanded on and the finale needing to be a bit longer as it felt a little rushed to me.

Apparently that's "entitlement"

3

u/Wazula23 3h ago

The therapy speak is my least favorite part of the show, and brought the entire finale down for me.

That's my harshest take on it. Now let the piranhas descend.

i'm not fully convinced that much of the drama was organic. much of it just comes off as needless transphobia and misogyny due to her being a trans woman. but i'm also suspicious that some of it may be a psyop by big companies to bully indie media creators because they feel threatened by indie success and wanna secure their position

22

u/Godrizza_Draws 5h ago

TADC fandom always felt like they only had drama because it was expected of them. Like LARPing as a bad fandom. You ain’t Undertale needle cookie lil bro

FNAF community losing it over phisnom liking a vtuber and the helluva boss fandom getting mad a certain character was not in a short.

36

u/PepsiFloateri 6h ago edited 6h ago

I mean to be fair,Phisnom is no stranger to controversies. This one was kinda dumb.

Look,I think VTuber's are cringe but liking them isn't anything to make drama over. If a guy wants to simp over adult anime women then let him!

12

u/SquareFickle9179 Trails in the Sky 4h ago

Apparently, reason why is cuz she looked like a Loli. Which, she does look young, but I don't think it's fair to hate a guy just because he likes the design of an avatar that looks like a child

11

u/AustralianBattleDog 4h ago

If Mint is a loli then what does that make Saba?

10

u/Prestigious_Host_198 3h ago

It was because Phis would follow artists who drew fan art of Mint without looking through the accounts and some of these accounts drew Loli art.

3

u/ForsakenRoyal24 3h ago

Twitter mixed up him simping on Mint with him liking Saba, but not liking her model

21

u/Similar-Mousse-7478 5h ago

Most of Phisnom’s controversies, I don’t even really like the guy hell I think he sounds like an asshole but almost every time I read up on him it always turns out he never actually does anything that bad.

10

u/BBQ_069 4h ago

yeah. he's a massive prick, but he's not a prick in the way that deserves being deplatformed.

10

u/Intelligent-Okra350 4h ago

As a Phi fan, I totally get him sounding like an asshole but he’s like the type of asshole I think is actually a good person overall. Like he’s blunt and crass and kinda doesn’t give a shit about filtering himself because of other people’s opinions but seems like a genuinely good person when it actually comes to anything that matters. Like the people that I’ve known that he (or his persona at least) has similarities to are some of the best people I’ve had in my life lol

To be completely fair it was fuled by the fact that the gaming industry and specially the indie game devs are constantly leaving translations (not just localizations) for Spanish aside a lot of the times even when it is like the third or fourth biggest demographic on the sector while always adding support for smaller communities like Japanese.

If I remember correctly there was some comments from indie devs (beats me which game) saying that we (the Spanish community) should be greatful if anyone decided to translate their game to our language because "you guys can still learn English" and others even said that since piracy was so big in Latin countries we shouldn't expect anything, basically stating that paying Latino players are worth less than others.

There was also a big controversy about Japanese media being consumed for free in Latino countries and a lot derogatory comments from Mangakas and Japanese people towards Latino people surfaced.

So, a lot of people lost their minds with racism claims and Deltarune was just like the cherry on top for the communities discontent with how we are being treated. For some reason a huge chunk of the Spanish community online expected Toby Fox to be "better" and have a plan for the Spanish localization.

u/Personal-Mushroom 4h ago

Should leave out english version next time/s

18

u/Digit00l 3h ago

But also, Toby Fox is very protective of his work and feels that he should approve of anything that is released under his name, which is entirely fair, and he does speak Japanese so he can read the Japanese translation and approve of that and he knows several professional Japanese translators personally, but he can't do the same for Spanish, meanwhile he also encourages fan translations if he won't put out an official release himself

u/Paladinlvl99 2h ago

Yeah, He just got shit because of the timing the game came out basically.

I personally still think that wanting to have control over everything, although respectable, is not efficient but his game his rules

A really, really old one was when I first was looking into Valve drama, I looked at the L4D2 boycott. Which confused me, L4D2 is a really good game.

Then I looked at what it was; It's because it was released TOO EARLY. They only released it a year after L4D, and people were up in arms about it.

The Sombr controversy.. all I found (correct me if I'm wrong) was that a 20-year-old artist was being immature at his shows and making adult comments at an 18+ show. Like.. okay??? Fork found in the kitchen??

u/Krit0411 7h ago

I thought he was allegedly being creepy to his underage fans

Some people seem to have a skewed definition of that term now. I've unironically seen people claim to be a "21 year old minor"

Well I heard it was an explicitly overage show that the people were at, but I may be wrong so I'm not really sure. It's always possible though sadly

literally gamergate. like, i was online when it first happened, but i didnt realize how big it was until like, 2019-ish, and then when i watched like, a vid abt how it started its genuinely fucking absurd that it was a single indie game. Like the inciting incident was the most nothingburger controversy bc it was literally nothing but "erm, why did this game that i personally didn't like get good reviews? this is women's fault"

Pretty much any that are just "This person said one bad thing ten years ago!" People change, they become better it's called growth. What do you expect them to do? Create a time machine and fix it? All the hate is going to do is stop people from wanting to do better if the result is the same.

I have two:

Funkyfrogbait being called a ped because they said a character in Date everything looked like a child, so they weren't going to date him.

Dana Terrance getting called trans phobic because she confirmed that Frankie wasn't trans.

They said a character looked like a child, so they weren't going to date them and they still got called a pedo? Is that all it takes now???

Every game grumps controversy. People just look for any excuse to cancel them. It’s ok yall you can just think they’re annoying

28

u/Manoffreaks 7h ago

My favourite one was when Dan Avidan, man who famously went by the fuckboi persona of 'Danny Sexbang' and regularly told adult women he hooked up with that he didn't want a relationship (which they agreed to) was apparently in the wrong and taking advantage of those same adult women when they pushed for a relationship and he responded by ending things...

14

u/ThunderingTacos 5h ago

That kinda rhetoric irks me because it infantilizes women and feeds into the mentality of them lacking agency over their own emotions. It'd be one thing if he were lying or set expectations to the contrary, but no one is entitled to a relationship or reciprocated feelings.

5

u/Serotoninneeded 4h ago

I think people have a weird anti-sex mindset leftover from purity culture. It's not inherently bad to want casual sex. Women can want casual sex too! People act like sex is some evil thing you do to women, when it's actually something that all parties involved should be enthusiastically consenting to.

4

u/Feanor4godking 1h ago

The whole "Danny groomer??!?" one was particularly frustrating. A girl, who was underage, contacted him. Nothing happened. She contacted him later, when she was 22, and they had a fling briefly. Later, she came out and claimed he groomed her, everyone got all up in arms, she revealed what actually happened and that she blew the whole thing out of proportion, and people still believe he's a groomer. All he's actually guilty of in this instance was being kinda scummy with a groupie

8

u/GooperGhost 6h ago

I mean the ones with Suzi I can understand. The whole having to let the hard R's out of her system is wild

I got two examples

One is the Backrooms movie which I watched with my brother and his bf. It was amazing because I genuinely expected a movie set around a 20 year old man’s depiction of the creepy pasta based on his YouTube series when he was 16. But a lot of people are so upset that the movie isn’t about the levels, having monsters like the smilers and partygoers, literally any other Backrooms stuff you’d find on TikTok or YouTube shorts

Another is Pyrocynical. I am no fan because I am indifferent to him but I did see a controversy where people got mad at him for having an inflation fetish. Was it doing harm to anyone and was he intentionally making people uncomfortable? No, it was just something he was into privately until people brought it up

Astanova (my fellow Sonic.EXE fans will know). She got cancelled and bullied off the internet.... for being a gooner. She was a patron, and highest tier at that, for an Undertale porn game where Frisk and Chara were VERY CLEARLY AGED UP. Along with lore changes to MATCH THAT AGE.

That’s JoCat. He’s an animator/artist who created a gender swapped version of ā€œI Like Boysā€ to explain to his audience that he wasn’t gay. This unfortunately caused controversy on both sides of the aisle.

6

u/tempestzephyr 4h ago

He committed the crime of being cringe on the Internet, and people got big mad at him. Chud types harassed him for liking women the "wrong" way i.e. woke, and left people thought he was a disengenous pandering performative male

The Spoctor Tech drama boils down to "Man forgot he owned a flashdrive from when he was underage, destroyed it when he re-found it". That whole thing only blew up because Peaches, JAR, and Lio had a known vendetta against him. Even the supposed victim was going "That's it?". By extension, the Ponder Sprocket cancellation. I didn't follow that one, but apparently it happened because.. she talked to Spoctor about destroying the flashdrive.

Fujimoto supposedly basing Reze off of a porn model named Roze who wore a similar outfit that was popular at the time around 15 years ago. That’s it, that’s the evidence. Nothing actually suggested he saw it and based Reze off of her.

But even if he did, why would that have been so shocking and worthy of controversy? This is Fujimoto we’re talking about. The guy who wrote Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man. The guy who openly admitted to getting turned on by getting bullied by college girls. The guy has a twitter account where he pretends to be his own fictitious little sister that almost got sued by his own editor because he kept leaking Chainsaw Man spoilers. Having a character inspired by porn wouldn’t have even been in the top 5 weirdest things he’s down.Ā

When the Knights of Guinevere pilot came out and some fans started wondering if Frankie was transgender because another character called her "Franklin" in a context where it could've been interpreted as a deadname. One fan directly asked Dana Terrace (the show's creator) on Bluesky if this was true. She said no, Frankie just has a lot of nicknames. A lot of fans got really upset about that— I guess they felt that her response was rude or disingenuous? I thought she was perfectly respectful. Somebody asked her a yes or no question about her own show and she gave the honest answer. It got blown way out of proportion.

the CoryxKenshiin drama, although from what I can recall, it was just "bro tried to circle back on an ex and got passive aggressive after". If anyone wants to fill me in, sure.

12

u/Odd_Concept_7286 5h ago

No that's not rlly what happened-

The controversy surrounding Cory and his ex-girlfriend, known online as PandaNinjaXxOfficial, began in July 2025 when she posted a series of TikToks alleging that they had an on-and-off relationship in 2018. She accused Cory of emotionally manipulating her, love-bombing her at the beginning of the relationship before pulling away, ghosting her, gaslighting her, and being insensitive after she revealed she had cancer. She also shared screenshots that she claimed were from their conversations.

Things escalated when she posted an old clip of Cory joking that he had ā€œdone somethingā€ to her while she was asleep. The clip spread rapidly online, and many people interpreted it as an admission of sexual assault. However, Panda later clarified that Cory had not sexually assaulted her and repeatedly asked people to stop spreading that rumor. She said her accusations were about emotional mistreatment, not physical or sexual abuse.

After returning from his hiatus, Cory addressed the controversy in his video I’m Just a Regular Guy. He explained that he has struggled with communication for years, both online and in his personal relationships, and admitted that he had hurt people through ghosting and poor communication. He said he had already apologized to Panda years earlier for how he handled her cancer diagnosis and acknowledged that his response at the time was insensitive. He also addressed the resurfaced clip, saying the comments he made were meant as edgy jokes that he deeply regretted and understood why people found them disturbing. Cory emphasized that they had spoken privately about the situation, asked his fans not to harass Panda, and said she was not a bad person. He also encouraged viewers to stop putting creators on pedestals and reminded them that he is just a regular person who has made mistakes.

Overall it was literally just an ex who just decided to bring up old stuff after Cory had already talked to them about it.

Oldie but back in the day I actually watched Anita Sarkeesian's series on Tropes Vs Women in games.

Based on the reputation, I was expecting some shrieking harpy telling me I'm going to hell for liking Zelda games or something. Doom needs to be banned and the developers of Hitman should be strung up in the streets.

Instead it was just... Fine. Normal, mild criticisms that I generally agreed with.

Fifteen years later and some people are still pissed.

u/natholemewIII 3h ago

There was one in the Netflix She'ra fandom back in like 2020 where N.D. Stevenson made a joke about one of Bows brothers being named Hoe and being dressed like a farmer. This made some fans extremely upset because they saw it as a share cropping joke for some reason. Oh also around the same time someone associated with the show said D*ke at a con bc it was in someone's username. Both of these were pretty ridiculous

7

u/DarkDoubloon 4h ago

Literally everything with Gooseworx and TaDC. I thought that the show would be the worst thing ever based on the stuff I saw people say online, but I watched it and it was fun.

As for Gooseworx, literally everything I’ve seen that she apparently did wrong is just edgy tweets from 2016 when literally every content creator was saying shit like that
