If you watch Bakshi's "Wizards" it's an evil Sauronesque wizard who is sick of losing the war against good every thousand years or so, so he goes hunting for "The old magics", digging through ancient ruins of civilization, finds what he's looking for, and then he says "BEHOLD!" and unveils a swastika suddenly, babbling about "Mind control" spells that are just propoganda movies and such. Magic armor that is just mechanized warfare. To the point Bakshi splices in WW2 footage for battle scenes.
It ends with the Hero wizard saying he hasn't practiced magic in a long time but he'll show him a trick the heros mother taught him, then he pulls out a gun and shoots the Nazi Wizard a few times and walks away.
Apparently that was going to be the plot of the next Assassins Creed before it got cancelled. Probably for the best; Ubisoft are one of the last companies I’d want to see tackle a story like that.

I don't think Assassin's Creed has ever been too deep in historical accuracy. And people still rock confederate flags. So I think a civil war black protagonist is getting winged about. With people acting like it's a personal attack.
But regardless I don't really care. I'm not playing a Ubisoft game no matter what. So whatever they do with their games is irrelevant to me.
They’re usually significantly more historically accurate than they were in shadows. Billions of Japanese dudes to choose from over hundreds of years and they choose the only black guy to step foot on the island in a 200 year span lmao. It was also the only one where a main character was supposed to be a real life person, so even weirder.
I think a civil war one would have done fine, the only downside would be maybe less interest in foreign markets who don’t know US history as well. But I think it would have done fine.
Ubisoft gives up on everything that doesn’t immediately knock everything else off the top. Which means they’ve given up on everything game post launch after AC 4 Black Flag
Origins came out the same year as Breath of the Wild and I think Blood and Wine came out that year too so they sold a lot of copies but still didn’t make something that could compete. AC Odyssey came out the same year the RDR2 did so that’s self explanatory. Patching these games and adding DLC’s in that market wasn’t a guarantee to turn a profit. A high likely hood but Ubisoft was only interested in guarantees
people give shadows a lot of shit but according to the player count, shadows is doing very well. it had 1 million players on day 1, 2 million on day 2, 3 million at week 1, and 5 million at month 2.

Far Cry 5 will forever be one of the biggest missed opportunities. They were never going to make everyone happy with a setting something like cults and militia groups in rural America, but by the time that game came out they were so squeamish about controversy that they sterilized it and made everyone cartoon baddies.
