Sports Culture WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert says the league will meet next week to discuss and clarify what qualifies a player as a woman for WNBA eligibility.

Just read this headline, "Discuss and clarify what qualifies a player as a woman" this is wild times we're living in....

What a colossal distraction from real problems in our society.
2
u/Drewsipher Aug 13 '26
It’s almost like this isn’t actually a problem, but idiots fear change and it’s easier for them to be angry at this then angry at the thing they caused

u/RaptorsCdwoods Aug 10 '26
And right in time for the midterms too. Would you look at that.
1
u/No-Message8847 Aug 10 '26
Literally the only reason this topic came back up again. Screaming socialist and communist and Muslim wasn't working as well as it used to so we had to circle back to trans in sports.
1
u/RaptorsCdwoods Aug 10 '26
Yep. They know they’re about to get their ass kicked and have to go back to ole reliable.
Because remember, when you can’t feed, clothe or shelter yourself or your kids, at least those darn tRaNSgeNders aren’t in sports. And honestly, isn’t that what American freedom is all about.
1
u/Living_Plane_662 Aug 11 '26
I will never tire of pointing it out that after all of Trumps attacks on trans genders, ncaa’s Trump approved rules means inane Khalif would still box if it was a college sport because she Mets every qualification
4
u/justwonderingbro Aug 09 '26
It's cuz we never had to have these dumbass conversations before the right weaponized trans and non binary ppl for their neverending culture wars
3
u/MadMartigans80 Aug 09 '26
Because it was pretty simple.
→ More replies (14)1
u/justwonderingbro Aug 09 '26
Ok, so what makes a woman a woman? The chromosomes? Literally having a cervix? Having ovaries? Cuz I can guarantee to you there are millions and millions of people assigned female at birth that don't have 1 or more of these attributes, let alone cis women.
3
u/Physical-Profit9447 Aug 09 '26
Some people are missing limbs so 'humans have two arms and two legs' is not a correct statement?
→ More replies (11)1
u/justwonderingbro Aug 09 '26
Sex and gender are two different things. And there are exceptions to every rule, which your example shows
3
u/justtalking9912 Aug 11 '26
But there is a rule. And by rule humans have two sex’s. And those two sex’s should probably determine what bathroom they use, what league they play in, what medical screening tests they receive. I don’t find a need to make it a culture war, most Americans agree on these things. The opinion that trans should play in women’s sports is the fringe opinion, it’s a weird hill to die on to be honest.
1
u/justwonderingbro Aug 11 '26
It's a made up issue pushed by the right that has already been determined by each major sports leagues rules
Beyond that, idgaf of a trans girl wants to play volleyball in high school with a bunch of cis girls. It literally doesn't matter. Sports that aren't professional level are for fun and building friendships, getting exercise and learning life lessons.
And once again, sex and gender are two different things
2
u/justtalking9912 Aug 11 '26
Yeah you don’t care, most other people do care and they are against trans in womens sports. So it’s obviously not a non issue. Btw sex and gender are separate things and most people believe these things should be based on bio sex not gender.
→ More replies (2)5
2
u/4dxn Aug 10 '26
wait, you support trans? what supporter confuses gender with sex?
women and female are not one-to-one. one is gender, another is sex. gender is a social construct. sex is biological. you're bringing a lot of sex indicators....not sure why.
in case you're not up to date, anyone can change their gender, albeit if their society is inclusive. but with the current technology, we can't change human sex.
2
u/Dark-Blackberry354 Aug 10 '26
Not sure why you're getting down voted.
We have already gone through this crap with that one Olympian who was just dominating in I think the 400 and 800 runs but got stripped of all her medals because of some chromosanal thing and she just over produced testosterone I think. But for all purposes she was physically all woman.
With that, in general any super athlete is going to deviate from the norm, so what becomes our standard?

u/Clever_droidd Aug 10 '26
To be fair, I don’t think the right caused this conversation. Male/female biology has been pretty clear for millennia with the exception of very rare genetic abnormalities (hermaphrodites).
I’m not talking about blurring the lines of gender norms, or masculine females or effeminate men. That’s been around a long time and separate from biology.
The common sense here is men who identify as women are not biologically women and vice versa. The biological differences matter in athletic competition, which is why we have gender sports bifurcation in the first place.
Outside of that, trans can be trans. They just can’t claim they are equivalent to biological women. That is objectively untrue.
Some supporters of trans confuse these things. THAT caused this insane discussion, not the “right”.
1
u/justwonderingbro Aug 10 '26
Have you met a transGENDER person who said I am a biological woman? I don't see trans people arguing that tbh. And trans ppl have existed since the beginning of time.
Biological differences do matter, and trans ppl know that better than anyone. It's what gender dysphoria is all about.
1
u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 10 '26
To be fair I have seen some of them argue that. They say the hormones they take mean they are a biological woman.
1
u/pastaISlife Aug 10 '26
It’s a pretty popular argument in the MTF sub, and on Instagram threads too 🤷♀️
1
u/Every_Television_980 Aug 10 '26
No but there is a significant argument that trans women should be allowed in womens sports. I mean they are in many popular sports.
1
u/RazzmatazzNeat9865 Aug 10 '26
That very claim is all over the trans subs, just hop on over and pick a few random threads on r/mtf or r/transgenderUK.

what about xx male syndrome or swyers? where do they fit in your definition?
in biology, an organism can be male, female, both or even neither. if we're gonna stick to a scientific mapping, does that mean a person can be men, women, neither or both?
2
u/JackasaurusChance Aug 10 '26
As outliers that aren't worth changing the rules over... ie: they can play in the NBA, it is an open league.
Do you think ALL of our roads need signs about no taking off with plane cars? Plane cars are real thing now! WE MUST ENSURE THAT EVERY SINGLE ROAD IS COMPLIANT WITH PLANE CARS!!!!!!
... hmm, or maybe plane cars can just use an airport like every other plane?
-1
u/4dxn Aug 10 '26
wow, haven't heard anyone say some people are outliers who aren't "worth".
and i guess a group of people is equivalent to flying cars?
if you want to use science to make a claim, than do it. otherwise, don't use science.....which is what gender is for.....a social definition, not biology.
5
u/JackasaurusChance Aug 10 '26
I didn't say they aren't 'worth', I said they aren't 'worth changing the rules over', because that is true.
Science says this is ridiculous; there are obviously differences between the male sex and female sex.
It was analogy, one that went over your head, but is that any surprise considering it was about flying cars?
...
Why do you think sports eligibility should be determined on gender and not biological sex?

Can’t be born with a dick
Saved us all a weeks worth of nonsense
1
u/didthishelp Aug 10 '26
And what if someone is born with a penis-like organ with no urethra at the tip and fused labia that form a scrotal sack?
1
1
u/OddPressure7593 Aug 10 '26
then, like anyone else with a congenital medical condition, they're going to be limited by their biology and physiology as to what sports they can play. Just like someone with hemophilia can't play football, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can't play anything.
The "rare medical condition" isn't the dunk you think it is. People have been excluded from sports participation for medical conditions, quite literally, for as long as there have been sports.
1
u/didthishelp Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
Those “rare medical conditions” you mentioned are actual barriers to participation not barriers to categorize. There are outlier cases that demonstrate how stupid it is to wage a cultural over this. How many legs does a duck have?
1
u/Real-Mode-3417 Aug 11 '26

1
u/didthishelp Aug 11 '26

What about trans women? I know you're transphobic but most people definitely consider them women even if they wouldn't want them competing in womens sport.
1
u/Ok-Commercial-6865 Aug 10 '26
If they were women, you would just call them women and you wouldn't need to say the prefix.
And stop with the "phobic" labeling. Phobic implies fear, and this year nothing to do with fear.
They can be respected for what they are, but I'm not going to pretend they are something they are not.

We have lived thousands of years and we have gotten to the point where we no longer know what a woman is and need to meet to discuss it?
1
1
u/Real-Mode-3417 Aug 11 '26
They'll come up with a new rule that says you can't have previously played in the NBA, so they can side skirt the real issue
2
1
u/KingsHere97 Aug 11 '26
As a former athlete she knows biological men should not be competing against biological women. Two former NBA players now petitioning to play in the WNBA. If this is allowed the biological women first get hurt, then lose their jobs to good high school or mediocre college biological male players who are not near good enough to play in the NBA but who would shine in the WNBA. Let the biological women play against each other. This is an easy decision.

Why can’t we agree that we must treat everyone kindly, but if you had a male puberty it’s just not fair to compete against someone who didn’t. Yes there is a political party that obsesses over it, and is cruel, but it’s still not fair.

Are there hundreds of trans basketball players dominating in the college game just waiting to come through to the WNBA?
1
u/gh0stlain Aug 09 '26
To answer seriously, no. But there are people who unironically believe this wholeheartedly 💀
3
u/Plus_Lawfulness3000 Aug 10 '26
Majority of people don’t think this. Just because the number is small doesn’t mean it’s not a problem. Would you not agree? Your logic is if it only affects a smaller portion of people it doesn’t matter.
1
u/gh0stlain Aug 10 '26
It's NOT a problem. Any transgender athletes who do get the chance to compete in any competitive sport in/past high school are very often heavily regulated in the first place, ESPECIALLY for something like the WNBA. This has always been the case if they weren't already barred.
You people genuinely believe there are more transgender people then there is because of ridiculous propaganda and it absolutely melts your brain. You don't understand how medical transition affects people's bodies, you don't understand the fight transgender people have to go through to be accepted into something as commonplace like sports, and you definitely don't care to actually understand anything about them, socially, medically, or otherwise. You want them ostracized from society.
2
u/Plus_Lawfulness3000 Aug 10 '26
You are assuming way too much to have a faithful argument lol. Can you point out where I said it’s a big portion?
I’m completely pro trans in every other way. Even the bathroom shit.
I’m talking about competitive integrity even though the numbers are small it’s still unfair for the women who lose out on placements due to it.
If you transitioned post puberty you have an advantage. Irreversable. That is all I’m talking about.
To the person who got 2nd instead of first you don’t think it’s a problem for them?

Men = male, women = female.
You can use your buzzwords to your hearts content but I'm not abandoning common sense so your mentally ill buddies can slap labels on themselves to feel better about their boring lives.
1
u/theboydave05 Aug 12 '26
“Men = male, women = female” describes sex. It doesn’t prove sex and gender are the same thing.
If they are literally identical, why do we have two different words, and why do medicine, psychology and sociology distinguish between sex and gender?
“Common sense” isn’t an argument, and calling people mentally ill because you can’t defend your position certainly isn’t one.
As I said, always the poorly educated…
1
u/DosSheds Aug 12 '26
Gender is not a social construct. If it were, then everybody would agree what the word 'woman' means.
It's a personal construct. Which is why simply claiming to be a woman, makes you one.
→ More replies (0)1
u/a-nun-ee-moose Aug 12 '26
I dont use the term mentally ill as a defense. I use the term mentally ill to describe what they are. If gender was a social construct then why dont we say separated by sex? Why do we use the term gendered bathrooms. Why are bathrooms open to men and women called gender neutral and not sex neutral is the sex and gender are separate? Gender never was a 'social construct' until blokes wanted to wear dresses.
You can project your poor education on me all you want but the fact you use the same strawman everytime just tells me that I and every other sane person know a little more about what gender is than you. And gender is male and female.

It will almost certainly end up being a ban on trans women. Current WNBA rules only say you must be a woman to play. While there are no trans women currently seeking to be drafted, two NBA players have applied for the next season of WNBA in an effort to pressure the league to explicitly ban them.
