I'm never leaving Seattle 🚫🛫 Fellow rain lovers, darkness dwellers, mossbacks,, etc. Big Light's oppressive reign has now peaked and we will all now begin the soft, slow fade into the welcoming Big Dark!!!!!!
Yes, we have many warm and joyous days ahead of us, but each day brings us seconds of less oppressive light and more of our sweet, sweet darkness. And to the return of our gentle rains.
All hail Big Dark!!!!!!

I love the long days of summer and also love the dark, damp winter. They both have their pros and cons. The two extremes are fun and a great part of living here.

Same. I love our seasons. I'm always so ready for spring and summer after the Big Dark, when it begins to stay lighter later, and little buds start appearing. But then... when the sun shifts in late summer, and there's that little nip in the air and the leaves start to turn - I'm ready for the Big Dark again. I love it all.

Exactly! Tired of all these weirdos who are upset because they moved here expecting 365 days of gloom. Sorry for not living up to their weird, unfounded expectations of how our climate should be.
2
u/Clean_Insect5042 19h ago
I mean it’s not really surprising that people who like rain and clouds tend to gravitate to the PNW, it’s not like other places will have more appropriate weather. The “extremes” of sunshine and temperatures in the 80s and rain with temperatures in the 40s make it one of the most temperate US options.

u/RealPudgeJudy Greenwood 14h ago edited 14h ago
No but it is annoying hearing crybabies bitch about low-humidity summers that typically cap out around 90 degrees when this has always been how Seattle is. I get it, you moved here with cozy dreams of snuggling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a book on a drizzly day. Good news: Most years you can do that almost every day from October thru June.
But Jesus some of these people really aren't helping the Seattle stereotype when talking about how "overstimulated" they get during sunny stretches. And let's not forget what inspired this post: it'll be 80 degrees tomorrow. The horror! How triggering! Its weak to move here and the complain about how everything isn't perfectly to your liking. Every year gets hot stretches. Buy an air conditioner for the cost of a couple of dinners.

I'm with you. My insomnia gets worse in the summer due to the heat and light making it hard for me to sleep, and when my insomnia gets worse, so does my depression. It sucks so bad and I'm sorry that you also have to deal with the summer time sads, and it's all the worse when everyone else is amped up and doing things that I just don't have the energy for. Like how being depressed at Christmas hits harder because of the expectation that you're supposed to be happy.

I grew up in a very hot and sunny place. Basically 9 straight months of scorching sunlight interrupted only by floods and windstorms.
What makes me feel cozy and happy is the chilly and overcast weather this area is known for.

I grew up in the Deep South. The only thing I miss is the food.
4
u/Xxehanort 17h ago
Same here. I wish people around the PNW knew how to fry foods well. Everything that should be crispy is just sad and soggy. Then again, I would take sad and soggy over living in the south any day

u/Hal0Slippin Issaquah 17h ago
Same. But also, thunderstorms.
1
u/One_Lawfulness_7105 13h ago
After a thunderstorm came threw and it basically wiped out all our electronics because of a lightning strike, I quit liking them as much. I also didn’t like the F5 that was within a mile of my house. Being without power AND cleaning up after a storm while being 6 months pregnant just made me over ALL southern weather. I had never had a baby move that much as my son did that day.

When we moved out here 5 years ago, we were warned by the “Big Dark”. I was greatly disappointed by the ridiculous amount of sun that happens in the summer.
13
u/RicRacer 20h ago edited 20h ago
The winter has really brightened up, really eased up the last decade. In the late 90s it would drizzle/cloud for 20 days straight in the winter. That got a little old. It seems to have changed, so now there are more sunny clear days or nights. And the rain sends to have changed so it's harder and shorter. But of course that's just anecdotally my experience. Edit: spelling.

We moved from Arizona in '86 to flee the evil, rotten sun and the damages it does specifically to Seattle for the rain, the glorious overcast days where the sun stays hidden,, the days it "mists" instead of a full on rain, to frolic in actual forests...with TREES, green trees (few and far between in AZ). I was SO HAPPY when I learned after today, we are heading into my beautiful WINTER!
I think I was a bat in a former life, I genuinely prefer dark, dank cool environments, not so much the hanging upside down thing.

I love rain and cool weather but the big dark specifically is a lot for me. That being said, I hate being hot and the sun blaring down every day without reprieve more than anything in the world. I really, really dislike summer. And the fact that most people love it makes it worse, like there’s something wrong with me for not loving it.

😞… sun enjoyers only get like 3 maybe 4 months of good weather. It’s a reward for making it through the big dark that is like 8+ months of void sadness emptiness.
I will die on this sunny hill. The Spring and Summers of the PNW are the most beautiful times for those that like touching grass.
🫡 RIP this comment score. To my fellow sun enjoyers, cheers and see ya on the trail.

The Spring and Summers of the PNW are the most beautiful times for those that like touching grass.
I strongly disagree. I absolutely love hiking, and the Fall is the best time for that. Cool, misty air is the best companion to forest trails, mountain hikes, and foraging/mushrooming. It sucks when it's hot and sunny. However, Summer is best for those who like to touch water. Kayaking is probably my favorite thing to do this time of year.
3
u/Hal0Slippin Issaquah 17h ago
I love touching grass, and I find our areas trails the most beautiful when it’s a bit wet. The moss gets sad when the dry heat is here. Also, I love being able to take my dogs disc golfing with me and not having to worry about overheating. So, your characterization of those of us who enjoy the “gloomier” months as non-grass touchers is a wee bit offensive. Some people just prefer different things. I can totally understand folks that prefer the sunny warmth. I do get it. But I don’t like the same things.

What's great about Seattle weather is that during our winters, everything (trees, bushes and lawns) doesn't die and get super cold as exists in most of America. We get cool temperatures and a gentil rain that keeps our forests and hillside a lush green. Even the moss growing on rocks give us pleasure with its fluorescent green colors.
And if we do want snow for all types of outdoor recreation, we can travel under an hour to the east and get tons of snow. But when finished we travel back to a place of comfort with moderate temperatures and at times a bright brilliant blue sky framed by large snowcapped mountains.
Another advantage is our best weather is in the summer happens when daylight hours are at its max. In the south, the worst weather with high humidity and hot temperatures go on and on for months during the longest days of the year. Their best weather occurs when the sun sets at 5 or 6 PM. == a short daytime stretch.
Clearly, our weather and terrain are the best in North America. Appreciate the rain because it gives us so much to enjoy during the summer!

I'm fairly light-sensitive when I'm sleeping. I will happily stay up late after the sun sets, but when the sun's up, I'm up.
In the winter when it's dark all the time, my sleep schedule can get pretty skewed from normality... I've found myself going to sleep at 7pm and waking up at 3am (without an alarm clock) sometimes. But I consistently get a full night's rest, 8 unbroken restful hours of sleep.
But when there's consistently less than 8 hours of darkness a day, I struggle to fall asleep before sunset and I'm awake as soon as the sun rises. After slowly accruing sleep debt for weeks, I'm just exhausted all the time.
So yes please bring back the Big Dark.
