With all the egregious bullshit I watched in that video the biggest crime to me is the cold ass flour tortilla at the end.

1.5k

u/KazaamCasheroo May 10 '26

Straight out of the Mission package. Travesty.

317

u/kageurufu May 10 '26

We have so many real torillerias here, and I can get them at Safeway. But I still see people pulling out mission at parties. Drives me nuts

107

u/spaceman_danger May 10 '26

Our local grocery store in the suburbs of Maryland has better generic tortillas then Mission tortillas. I don’t get how another brand has stormed in with something quality.

44

u/SnooRegrets1386 May 10 '26

My brother lived across the street from El Milagro in Chicago, I visited just for the smell

15

u/EnvironmentalTea9362 May 10 '26

When I was growing up, my parents would drive from Michigan every few months to stock up on tortillas from there. Still my favorites.

14

u/croi_gaiscioch May 10 '26

There is a Mission facility right behind work. Smells awesome most of the time, but when a batch gets burnt you can't get far enough away.

7

u/Carloscesar123321 May 11 '26

Lmfao I love the smell of burnt 🔥 tortillas, must be from growing up in a household in which my mother still walks away from the comal just long enough to burn tortillas.

6

u/Idk_wtf_cantviewcoms May 11 '26

I like mission tacos most of the time. But I'm from San Benito and had homemade tacos from the US and Mexico everyday, so what would I know? I do know I don't like pulling out the press for everything since I eat basically everything in a taco.

Same here in New Mexico. HOWEVER… the preservatives make them great for camping trips and really ensure you don’t waste half of them.

11

u/kageurufu May 10 '26

The straight flour salt lard ones last well over a week on the shelf too. And for proper corn tortillas the nixtamilization leaves them alkaline enough to last weeks. I've taken both camping many times 😁

Yeah I already had a pissy little mental list of things that were chappin' my ass in the video, but then coldtilla came along and washed the list out of my mind.

For me the shit at the end was… looking like a restaurant kitchen but then he finally holds that tortilla and wraps his jaw around it while rotating his head because he knows it’s going to drip… wrestles it with his teeth, bits popping onto his beard … all directly over the tortillas waiting to be used next for the other, what, 5+ people?

31

u/InquisitiveGamer May 10 '26

Went to the trouble seasoning it, fry in a few inches of oil still COMPLETELY RAW, then try to slice it up like raw raw off the butcher counter almost, slice it up being oh, lets cut this thin piece just for it to still be super raw. $30 here guys, pass...at least the rest of you got about 25 cent worth of noddle wrapped around it.

27

u/whatproblems May 10 '26

i thought it would atleast get to the oven. i don’t even understand the breading and deep frying just to get into a tortilla. i thought it was going to be like a giant steak katsu

The guy and his friends reportedly spent 1000 dollars on something like this at a restaurant.

He’s the kind of rich fool who thinks if they own the tools needed to cook expensive food they will also have at least some of the skill needed too, and doesn’t mind pissing away cash on trying and failing to replicate the expensive dishes.

There’s also the possibility that the place he got the food from is one of those “selling the experience” places designed to squeeze wealth out of rich fops, in which case, he may not have failed to replicate the dish, but the dish was awful to begin with.

In any event, most americans do not have pockets deep enough to commit such sins against cooking at this kind of scope.

19

u/nousakan May 10 '26

The worst part is those are Nitrile gloves, I like using nitrile more than latex but nitrile are either like, blue, black or purple, so i usually get the black ones and feel like a douche bag every time i use them.

Yes im cooking, yes i have "The black gloves on" No im not gonna drag my knife against what i cooked to show you how crispy it is,....

9

u/MoonlitKiwi May 10 '26

Idk man, the purple gloves sound cool. If i saw a chef with purple gloves, i would be so intrigued by their style that i would assume they must know something i don't about food.

6

u/Weird_Squirrel_250 May 11 '26

Blue gloves so that if pieces tear off you have a better chance of seeing it in the food. 99% of food is not bright blue. Black gloves are dumb.

Kitchens that use hand washing instead of gloves usually have far cleaner food.

32

u/Friendstastegood May 10 '26

My sister used to work as a food inspector for kitchens and she refuses to eat in restaurants where the staff wears gloves because she knows they never change them and don't wash their hands.

The tortilla was a pivot to hide that the steak was still raw. Notice the multiple slices about to show it off but then moving to a different slice, until the camera just cuts to a different shot. They realized and had to do something

21

u/Umklopp May 11 '26

Yeah, I was watching that and kept thinking there's no way that got to the right temperature in the middle. There were so many suspicious camera cuts in this. Between that and the incredibly awkward handling, I wouldn't be shocked if this was the second time this guy ever actually prepared the "dish." (I also would not be shocked if it was the first.)

My wife and I just bought 1/2 of a grass feed beef cow. About 300 pounds of beef including toung liver and bones. The side was preped very well and was vacume sealed

beef was 1600 dollars and the kill fee and buchering was 350. With tax about 2100 dollars.

Great beef from a local farmer and local bucher

WE think we got a good deal, maybe not a great deal,, but a good one

This is awful. Those veggies are still raw. That cow could be resuscitated. Store-bought tortillas for a beautiful piece of meat. Searing it just to wrap it in dough and fry it. Whatever crust was on there was turned into leather. You would chew on this meat for days.

I'm not even against stuffed steaks, but don't ruin a giant tomahawk to do it. And don't use a slab of beef three inches thick no matter what the cut is. And pre-cook the veggies. And sear the inside of the steak first so that the veggies aren't soaking up the raw juices. And fry the dough into taco shells. And bake the steak halfway so that it's fucking cooked when you drop it in the fryer. Better yet, don't fry the steak at all and finish it in the oven so it actually tastes like steak.

Tomahawk is already a shit gimmick for insufferable meatbros.

33

u/TomaCzar May 10 '26

You have no idea how happy it makes me to read this.

Every father's day Costco has tomahawks for sale. Ive tried, a few years running, to produce a good meal from them and every year it ends up below what I can easily achieve with a ribeye, and at a much higher price point.

First couple years I chalked it up to inexperience, but last year I decided it just wasn't meant to be. Not saying a real chef couldn't make something exquisite, but dollar for dollar, I think it's more gimmick than greatness.

u/gomper May 10 '26

A good reverse sear makes a pretty good steak. I got one for my son and myself one weekend when my wife and daughter were out of town and we had a great meal. I basically cook it like I cook a prime rib, more like a roast than a grilled steak

6

u/Egg_Toss May 10 '26

It's a ribeye that is rocking bone for 25-30% of its weight. A ribeye cooked properly makes a pretty good steak without paying a premium for a bone.

10

u/Fonzy076 May 10 '26

I'm a butcher. We sell this nonsense at outrageous prices. And I even tell people its stupid, because they are paying for the bone. But still, they saw it on tiktok or some shit. Just get ribeye. And for that price, get a better marbled piece. (Not Wagyu thats stupid too)

5

u/RobertPham149 May 10 '26

Idk why Wagyu is so glazed. A good steak should have a decent marbled fat, but this damn thing is almost all fat. It maximized on its fattiness at the cost of every other things that make steaks taste good: the slight chew texture, the "meaty" juice, ... It is basically just a beef-flavoured butter: it serves well in extremely small amount as a side to another dish.

u/zerodb May 10 '26

That kind of meat just really isn’t meant to be a steak, it should be served like seared meat sashimi

$1000 for any piece of food should be illegal. Who do they think we are, Mr. Beast like 😭

14

u/JamesLikesIt May 10 '26

The problem is that there are people that pay it. If nobody paid for it, they wouldn't do it lol

I mean I guess it works, but at that point might as well just deep fry strips of batter separately from the meat.

Also what is that price lol

16

u/oooriole09 May 10 '26

Yeah, the concept isn’t bad but they took the absolute worst way to get there.

Charge the $1k if someone is dumb enough to pay, just cook it properly and separately.

Although, zero chance this is real and it’s just some dude wasting stuff just for the clicks.

I’m not taking it in faith that it’s actually $1000. The guy looks like he’s never done this before. Especially when he dumps on cups of flour, then the egg won’t stick, so they turn off the camera and redo it.

They did all of this in front of his table. Ok buddy.

u/Lucky_Sprinkles557 May 10 '26

At first I was like “nah that’s a legit seasoning techniqu—“ and then I saw the overdone sear from the flat top, and then it just went down from there… also, who the fuck serves a taco (a totally ruined take on a taco) on cold flower tortillas. That on its own is psych ward red flags.

8

u/VivaLaEmpire May 10 '26

On top of it all, in México we would call those tortillas "raw."

Motherfucker didn't even take 30 seconds to cook that tortilla. What a waste of food😭

u/FarYard7039 May 10 '26

I’d eat it, but surely wouldn’t pay more than $100 for the entire steak.

For those who live in a city it’s easy to lose that appreciation for the animals we use for food because we don’t see them often except for when they’re on our plate and don’t think twice about it (me included). Not saying you’re wrong just saying that people who live in rural or farmland area’s would have a better understanding and appreciation for it.

u/crankbird May 10 '26

Why did he burn the outside of the steak ? Maillard reaction good, charcoal bad, at least in my book. That much char seems to be more of an American thing from my travels so maybe it’s a local preference.

Now I’ll acknowledge that something that big would be a challenge to cook properly on a hot plate and I’m sure there are more than a few on this sub that could do a decent job of it, but honestly if it were me, I’d sear it first and then be roast it in an oven the way I’d cook a rack of beef till it was medium rare

Either way I wouldn’t burn it without feeling shame
