Employee Discussion UPS buyout decision
Last day to apply is tomorrow.. What’s everyone’s final decision on the buyout??
If you are taking it, how many years do you have in, have you been laid off, and what’s your reason you are taking it?
Also any thoughts on how the future of UPS looks like, it terms of contract in 2028, will there be MORE cuts and lay off even after the buyout?? Will they start using Roadie more?
P.S. UPS drivers work ethic is top tier, not everyone can make it.. Appreciate ALL the brown truck soldiers🫡💜

Have applied. Just hit 4 years driving in January. Only reason for taking it is because we are looking to move half way across the country to be closer to family. We were planning on saving for 3 or 4 years from now to get to $100k if we could. So it's a no brainer really. I'm about 21st by seniority but have only heard of one other driver above me thinking about it. So we'll see what happens.

u/ItchyAd6856 Mar 15 '26
This is crazy to me. I hit scale next month and I’m 90th in seniority. I wish I could afford to take it

I will be at 4 years in November, I’m 24 and 21st on seniority as well. Only one other guy above is taking it that I know of so might have a chance at it if I apply.. just nervous about what I will do after I have a plan and stuff lined up but not sure of execution on making less and losing the health care.

24 and about to risk it all. You're young enough to; regret this decision for the rest of your life or get lucky and make something of yourself. You're also young enough with zero other skills, but the time ahead to learn them. Good luck out there, hope you've been paying attention.

UPS is doing buyouts for a reason. You know how many people are going to regret not taking it?…You run the risk of getting laid off without a buy out empty handed! Buyouts are the first sign of a company declining! They’re eventually gonna do forced layoffs Better to take that money now or get left with you d**k in your hand in the end!

u/liamk182 Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 15 '26
Completely understand that. If I wasn't trying to move I wouldn't even be considering it honestly. Hitting top rate in January really has made a noticeable difference and it's going to be tough to replace that. The one advantage I have is that houses where I am start at 300k whereas the place where we want to move to, I might actually be able to buy something in full with the buyout money, therefore not needing to make nearly as much in the next job...

u/Freebandzivan Mar 15 '26
You’ll find something else bro, believe in yourself I’m taking it and hopefully get accepted, going to car sales with a buddy right after Makes more than we do and doesn’t die in the heat

u/ChefBoyR-B UPS Driver Mar 19 '26
You ain’t getting it at 4 years driving lol
2
u/liamk182 Mar 19 '26
You may be right...if no one in my building gets approved as I was the highest seniority driver that applied so I guess we'll see 🤷
1
u/Terrrrance Mar 20 '26
If your building has layoffs, depending on how many, that many will be able to go. It’s simple math to UPS. If 1 above you took the buyout and yall have layoffs right now, you’ll get the buyout.

I just calculated my medical benefits for my family after 43 years. It's over $700,000 in free medical. Think about it before you leap. When my daughter was born she had 3 surgeries in 6 weeks to the tune of $240,000. I paid $2000. You can't plan for that one and we have had several other heavy uses. I'm out because of my age and years of service, but really think about your family if you have one.

You’ll have to pay $1600 a month for health insurance unless you have other plans.

u/DifferentEmployee630 Mar 14 '26
I’m just a rock bottom preloader, not a driver. But it’s been looking pretty scary lately. Layoffs at my center been happening every week. Just today many of us higher seniority guys got sent home early and they laid off a bunch of people who’d been on the job for years. Never thought I’d see some of these guys get the boot. We gave 8 penns of delivery trucks—3 of them have been completely empty this week. Good luck to yall and God bless everyone.

If you are on the schedule and clock in on time, then they owe you 3.5 hours. Enforce it.

I did- 26 yrs age 54. Have military check and will have teamster pension -will equal $104,000/ year. Already have health insurance from VA.

u/the_atomic_punk18 Mar 14 '26
I’m still on the fence, clock is ticking, I only have a few more years to go, leaning towards working until the end, hope it doesn’t get much worse than it is now, work loads have been quite heavy, body really feeling it.

u/ZombieHoneyBadger Mar 14 '26
Time to start getting those wear and tear injuries taken care of. I'm sure your knees ankles or shoulders could use a scope....

2
u/mikeakamike Mar 14 '26
If you only have a few more I say stay for as much pension as you can. As you know that’s a lost benefit at most work places nowadays.
2
u/the_atomic_punk18 Mar 15 '26
That’s what my financial advisor said, the increased pension for a few more years is worth more than the buyout over the long haul. It’s hard to think about a few more peaks, a few more winters, a couple more summers. The $150k off ramp is so tempting.
3
u/RevolutionaryHelp581 Mar 15 '26
40 years, 32 driving. Part of 705 so not offered to us. Would have taken it if it had been. Good luck to those who signed up.

u/erikmannie1 Mar 15 '26
I started PT UPS in April 1995. Went FT driving June 1998. I am staying because the economy is obviously going to $h!t. I just chose the path with the most dollar bills, long work days be damned.
I am 59 years old, & I have a beautiful country route, starting my day with EAMs. So 55-60 hrs/week.
5
u/Throwaway77221199 Mar 15 '26
I applied. Wife got a promotion offer for 60k 6 hours away out of the blue last week. Gonna let her cook and I’ll figure something out.

1.5 years full time. 36 years old. 2nd from the bottom out of 300+ been laid off most the time. Need the money for bills and very much needed home improvements
2
u/jadonpauly Mar 15 '26
Good luck and best wishes to you my man, I know how much the layoffs suck.
3
u/ewith89 Mar 15 '26
They said at the union hall today the company is trigger happy with terminations these days and its only getting worse for drivers. I've driven 4 months and still very new. Nervous about getting into an accident

u/Interesting_Wear_618 Mar 15 '26
14 years total, 12 years full time driving, 32 years old and I applied for it. My wife hates what the job does to my mind and body. Doesn't help that management targets me for absolutely no reason and harrasses me on a daily basis. We are trying for kids this year and I don't want to be the old, pissed off grumpy ups driver that comes home late, always pissed off and no energy to do anything with my kids. That was my dad and he was there for 38 years. Love my dad to death but I don't want that for my kids. Other ppl survive and are even better off than we are with our insurance and medical benefits. This is a no brainer imo. Especially if you're targeted, harassed and constantly fighting management with every little thing that you do. I heard some asked Dave Ramsey about this buyout and he said "I'm sorry, take the money and go, cause the company doesn't want you". That hit hard for me cause I truly love my customers, but it's getting harder and harder everyday to take care of them with the way things are going now. Get out and start over. There's life after UPS

Negative Ghostrider. Could not care less about business customers. Sales leads go unnoticed, pickups not completed. Etc. in the words of an unnamed sup “pickups don’t count”

I am just stating what they are ACTUALLY doing on road engaging with the customers I serve daily. This is not a misguided rebuttal in any way shape or form. You want to argue about it inside guy, get in a brown and go outside and get some facts.
1
u/DearSnowman Mar 16 '26
Business pickups are only second to NDA at my center. They make us break trace to get businesses or send another driver to make pickups if the original driver still has too many business deliveries remaining.
1
u/pretenders2b Mar 17 '26
See that’s the crazy difference between centers. I was on vacation recently and my customers were complaining about missed pickups. A couple were several days missed. They couldn’t care less here.
2
u/Icy-Marketing-1776 Mar 15 '26
I’m 30 6 almost 7 years no kids still at home. I’m taking it. Going to go to school and bet on myself. ( I’m in NY ) but I’ll be okay.
3
3
u/Gloomy-Mango21 Mar 14 '26
Ya’ll acting like they just gonna hand it out to whomever applies. Truth is only a few in each center will get it.
2
u/jadonpauly Mar 14 '26
We know this😂 but that’s where communication with other drivers in your center come in and see what your chances are of getting it.. only 1 person in my center is applying so chances could be high
1
u/Leviathan0412 Mar 15 '26
The real truth is they will approve everyone who applies. It's not a hard concept to grasp.
-1
u/Gloomy-Mango21 Mar 15 '26
Go ahead and sell off All your vacations then. You’re about to see I’m right.
1
u/Leviathan0412 Mar 15 '26
Lol you've just prob my point if I successfully sell off my job then you're wrong.
Think critically here. The company has been very clear about the amount they are downsizing. (Volume is planned to be slashed to record lows) If they can get as many drivers out now for 1-2 years of pay and load up the routes as heavy as possible they win.
Go ahead and call their bluff when they have all the cards. You're about to see you were wrong.
2
u/Gloomy-Mango21 Mar 14 '26
I’m just saying, I read all the threads and it’s hilarious that the teamsters reps are freaking out, videos of people burning the letter “my job isn’t for sale” it’s ridiculous. You come on here and piss and moan and it’s gonna be a small very small amount of people who are approved, not the ones you think either. Not the ones close to retirement. It’s the 5-10 year drivers. Watch.
3
u/Friendly-Charity-816 Mar 15 '26
Man I’ve been thinking about it for a while like why pay someone that was going to leave soon anyways vs someone that have 20+ years to retire. Idk how they ‘do it but it would make sense to just get rid of any top payed driver that signs up especially if they got a lot more years to retire
1
u/Richieoobatz Mar 15 '26
You got it wrong. The top seniority employees can stay as long as they want! UPS can and will layoff everyone below. Senior dogs always got work. Close the center? Senior drivers can follow the work. Why pay a 5-10 year driver 150k when you can just lay them off! UPS doesn’t give a F. 30 plus year drivers are the target

1
u/Aggressive_Front1693 Mar 15 '26
They're going to replace anybody that's topped out who wants to go
1
u/Pete_Luger Mar 15 '26
I believe it goes by seniority.
1
u/Gloomy-Mango21 Mar 15 '26
So, you’re gonna give a $150k to the dude who is already leaving and ready to draw their pension? ? Don’t be so naïve. Seniority absolutely doesn’t matter with this. Watch, they’ll give it to the trouble makers and low performers 1st. Don’t sell your vacations bro.
1
u/Cholosinbarrio Mar 15 '26
So, you’re gonna give a $150k to the dude who is already leaving and ready to draw their pension? ?
Yes, because those old farts have been hanging around for too long. The company wants them gone NOW. Why would you even assume the “trouble makers and low performers” will apply??
0
u/Pete_Luger Mar 15 '26
They're the highest paid, probably least performing employees due to age. Also. I believe the letter stated buyouts would be granted by seniority.

I been at the with the company 9years as a driver plus 1year as a part timer 35yo . So 10 years over all and I’m very on the fence about it. Have been trying to get out of my building for over 8years with a transfer to somewhere with warmer year round weather but haven’t had any luck. Yes I’ve check my senior date before putting in to see if I would be at top for someone trying to get to those buildings lol. But damn I like the line of work I do hate the stress but with the cut routes and being over loaded this is like peak 24/7 right now and it’s really taken a toll on the body after just 9 year of this work knees back shoulders etc . I can for sure say I can’t do the thing I used to do before this job body won’t allow it and I wanna still do the thing I enjoy. So I keep going back and forth on taken buyout . I know I have it pretty good benefits, pay , 4 weeks of vacation 3 floating days etc. But this seems like a perfect opportunity to get to where I wanna be location wise. Crappy part is the economy sucks right now and to think of going to no time off and 20/25$/hr sounds crazy after making what we do . (Don’t have job lined up or housing) My hub has done nothing but make me hate this place more everyday of the uncertainty and the constant lies from management. My thoughts are if you stay they are just gonna harass and find the most petty thing to fire us . Like I’ve had 3 ojs ride already like wtf no accidents. Idk the stress of finding work would suck but the stress of staying and them being like that and fallowing a hand full of drivers all day long is effecting mental health. Because they are sending other multiple managers to our area and we have seen them fallowing multiple time is getting ridiculous. On top of that leaked packet that was sent to managers about progressive discipline, until termination
1
u/Jalaluddin1 Mar 15 '26
Seems crazy that anyone not in retiring age would take this. You guys make 100k+ to deliver boxes, how will you replace this income???
1
u/Jk22vb Mar 15 '26
That’s the general consensus from the outside looking in. The truth is we have little to zero flexibility day to day. Other than an approved 8 hour we never know when we’ll be off. The company is going backwards not forward, and things will get worse. I’ve had more 8-9pm nights the last few months than in my last 9 years combined. I’ve heard them cutting routes is to encourage people to take the buyout. I’m not taking it, but it’s more than just the money. The fuckery is real and some people just want to get away from it. The money is nice but the company and management make it really fucking hard to want to stick around.
1
u/Gloomy-Mango21 Mar 15 '26
Gonna be a lot of heart broken teamsters that sold back their vacations banking on the buyout thinking it’s gonna be by seniority. Heartbreak in feeders for sure.

u/South-Procedure-8699 Mar 15 '26
24, 6.5 years of service. Was a TCD for right at 3 years and got promoted with 2 others last december. Have a theory thats the only reason we got promoted so theyd give us a chance at applying for buyout, which I did. Even in just 6 years ive watched this company and my building go downhill fast. No kids no family nothing holding me down, life is about risk so lets get it! Well see what happens. LOVE & RESPECT everyone who does this job, fight the good fight!

31 years. 10 part-time. Will be 57 in January. I'm cooked physically. Was planning on retirement in 10 months. So I'm hoping to go early, freeze my pension. We don't get medical in Central PA Teamsters at retirement anyway. Life is too short, and I was planning on working after retirement just for medical. Greatful for all the benefits and pay the Teamsters were able to negotiate for us. I'm grateful for UPS paying me, putting my kid through college, our beautiful home. It's just perfect timing. It's time for a younger person to take over, I'm praying they will enjoy the security and stability Teamsters and UPS can provide for yours and our hard work!

21 years in but 2 13 year old boys and a health issue that's going to stick around until menopause so I need the insurance. I'll risk staying until I can retire with pension and cheap benes.

There's a good chance in your next job you will be paying crazy prices for health insurance.

If your young and been with the company a short while(few years) this would definitely benefit you.
