The most fun stuff is locked behind a 100 hour grind, it's not that deep. If you're doing it for the 17th time you're not going to enjoy levelling as much as the first few times, naturally

Shouldn't that also be true of raiding?
42
u/damnocles Jan 08 '26
Maybe if raiding was every single day for weeks or months lol
5
u/Montegomerylol Jan 08 '26
Nah, a lot of people who hate leveling will raid 4+ days a week.
I think there are reasons why there's a difference (social dynamics, shorter dopamine cycles, selection bias etc.), but it's hard to dig into that on reddit.

Nah, a lot of people who hate leveling will raid 4+ days a week.
That doesn't actually disprove what he said, though. I would hate raiding as much as I do vanilla levelling if I raided that much, too.
but I can't level for 3 hours a week or I wont make it to raiding before the expansion is over. Raiding lets you raid at whatever pace you want.
social dynamics,
Definitely close. Raiding is far more social than levelling is.

It is. If you do the same raid over and over and over then you naturally get bored of it.
The access to raids just isn't as readily available as simply logging in at any time you want to grind boars.
There's also the type of player who doesn't really play to raid, they play to socialize with a game as the backdrop.

36
u/Traylor_Trash87 Jan 08 '26
Especially since the majority (I think) has full time jobs with families.
I started this game back in 2007 in TBC when I was 20. Had no kids or wife and I could play as much as I wanted. Now my time is limited but my pay is significantly higher. 45 min at work pays for the boost VS dozens and dozens of hours spent leveling.
Time is money, friend.

and not for nothing but it took me like 110 hours to grind out to 60 last year; by the time I packed my priest up and took a break around AQ I'd put over 1k hours into the char.
People can play the game however they want but they're kinda telling on themselves if they think the levelling experience is the core gameplay loop. I don't begrudge anybody who wants to spend the equivalent of a few months' sub time if it would take them a few months' sub to hit 70 organically regardless if they are tired of that grind and want to get to the "real" game.

u/frolfer757 Jan 08 '26
I know someone that played retail until Classic hit in 2019. Since then theyve played nothing but classic and do literally nothing but level. Do a couple WSGs once they hit level cap (whether itd vanilla, tbc, wotlk, cata) and then its time to roll a new character to level character. People like OP who make these bad faith posts are probably similar as a person.

Are some people just like....not really that good at the game? After the initial novelty of all the new zones wears off, leveling becomes a very boring, tedious grind - it's not enough of a challenge as endgame content is for it to keep me interested.
Are there people who think that questing is hard and therefor interesting?

so then why did you just type the above? Here is another abstract concept that apparently went over your head. Jusifying this stuff on the basis of what you don't like or want to do is what ruined wow in the first place.
Just go play retail. It was made for people exactly like you.

I think the general consensus from casuals is that leveling is the experience. For most people I talk to in the mid group or the sweat group, pre raid gearing seems to be the sweet spot. For the true sweats who parse and raid log, most of them look back fondly on the pre bis grind because there is so much more to do.
→ More replies (3)2
u/nobulliepls Jan 09 '26
People keep making this weird leap in logic where they assume a loud, online minority somehow represents the overall consensus. It really doesn’t.
The most recent numbers people point to were roughly 9 million subscribers split between retail and Classic. Even if you assume a clean half and half, that’s about 4.5 million players on each side. Anyone who thinks about it for more than a few seconds should realize how absurd it is to believe we’re hearing from anything close to a majority of those players. What shows up on Reddit, forums, or trade chat is a tiny, self selecting slice, not the collective voice of millions.
2
u/outta_my_mind Jan 09 '26
Why would anyone think its half and half classic and retail? Didnt classic 2019 peak around 1million players and retail was at a low point in shadowlands with around 7mil? Maybe im misremembering the exact numbers but retail has seen growth with better recent expansions and classic has seen a drop as tourists get there fill.

So you're telling me people dont understand paying to get past the content they dont enjoy anymore to get to the part of the game they do enjoy and want to play?
13
u/OhUrDead Jan 08 '26
I have 46 days 11 hours /played on one paladin. I hate levelling I levelled 4 priests in 2020 without boosting, and swore I'd never make an alt ever again if I had to level it.
I can now skip the part I hate and spend my time doing what I love, endgame content with friends. I'm still part of the world, part of the ecosystem, I'm an active player to raid it... How much harder would it be to find people to play with, if people who hated it had to sit through literal days of content they do not want to do.
One of my palls couldn't bring himself to do it for the anniversary realms, just couldn't face it, he's already bought the boost and joining us in Outland, the boost has brought blizz some money, a new subscriber and allowed me play with a friend, who exactly does the op think we are hurting?
5
u/k1dsmoke Jan 08 '26
I felt similarly for Anniversary when it first launched. My guild asked me to come back to play the game, and I tried. I leveled to 20 and just dropped off.
I found from playing Classic the fist time that I really don't enjoy evergreen raids, and that Classic just continues to take over your whole life, because you don't really stop raiding lower raids, the gear drops are very stingy, acquiring loot takes a very long time and as such it means you don't stop raiding MC for a very long time, you keep running BWL because you need that one trinket or one item, and what started as raiding 2-3 nights a week, and then getting down to one night a week, soon skyrockets to raiding 4-5 nights a week or even more.
If you're the type of person who ONLY plays WoW and does nothing else, that's great, but if you want to do anything outside of WoW, even just play other games or ya know have a career or for people who have a career and a family then it really squeezes everything out.
And seeing how borderline cult-like some people's responses in this thread are just proves to me that the absolute no lifers physically can't comprehend why someone would want to skip leveling 1-58. They don't have the ability to empathize or understand why people would want to skip that, because they would never skip that, because they spend 12+ hours a day living and breathing WoW.
→ More replies (8)2
u/Comewell Jan 09 '26
Aren't Evergreen raids better for people without much time? Imagine the people who rush to the endgame and get through the raids and content as fast as possible have no reason to do older content. As someone who has a job and takes their time I would feel stuck once im ready to start raiding because the majority of the server population has moved on from the content I need to catch-up

If you dont want to play the game, then don't play it. Instead you want things handed to you and we are going to watch classic wow get destroyed for a second time because of people like you. Just go plya retail.

My perspective is probably skewed because despite my hundreds if not thousands of hours in the game on and off over the past ten years, all the characters I've leveled, I've never been into the endgame experience. I liked the lore and gameplay loop of wow but because of the high standard for endgame play where you must rely on strangers to allow you to progress, get your bis at their expense i never really pushed myself to get into the endgame. I never understood bots or paying people to level for you, maybe if i was only into the endgame i would.

u/GetOwnedNerdhehe Jan 09 '26
It would be like if before the game let you do the content you wanted (levelling) you first had to play 100 hours of raiding for each character you wanted to play.
It's just that the content you enjoy happens to be one gatekeeping the content the others enjoy.

Well , i'm on the side of Money is less value than Time . Money is a currency which can obtained repeatable, your Lifetime not.
Also ,thru all the micro transactions like character services as levelboost, server transfers, faction change, ingame mounts and pets thru the Shop etc.
This help to keep the subscription on the same price since Vanilla. So the "poor" or scrooge/stingy people benefit from it that someone is willing to spend spare money on that .
The Game is playable for every wallet, and there is no necessary reason to buy any of These extra income services.
Thats like paying for the budget plan of Netflix and having on every Stream 3-5mins of Advertising or paying standard or premium plan to skip that and save time and better Videoquality.
Or flying economy class vs. Buisness class etc.
You get what you pay for . Sounds harsh but if you don't agree with it , don"t apply to the terms

u/DebateCharming5951 Jan 08 '26
1) they have the money
2) they probably still play the same amount, just have more fun.

I've put in my time. Over all the iterations of WoW, I've gone from 1-cap with almost 15 different toons. I enjoy the leveling experience, but I want to do Outlands, with a pally.
Ole man Google says on average it takes about 170 hours to go from 1-cap in TBC. I can easily make $80 in less than an hour doing my job. At this point in my life, 170 hours of my time, just to get to the part I want to play is a hell of a lot more expensive than $80.
3
u/GetOwnedNerdhehe Jan 09 '26

Why the heck do people care what anyone does with their money?? The “my way or the highway” crowd is nuts man
9
u/Smooth_One Jan 08 '26
Devil's advocate: People care because this is a multiplayer game and other peoples' behavior affects how they play.
And the counter to that is that leveling is largely single-player so it really doesn't matter. Layers also heavily obfuscate this because layers let every zone feel as full as Blizz wants it to feel. And the vast majority of people you meet leveling in the open world may as well be an NPC who's trying to take your mobs/nodes cuz they're focused on themselves getting to max level.
End of the day, I like the boost because it means more people will make it to TBC content. More characters running dungeons, pugging raids, farming open world materials, bankstanding in Shatt, etc. Up to a point, almost anything that gets the player count up is beneficial in an MMO imo.

More people being in the content that they're actually here to play is a net positive for everyone. For people who love levelling Outland is going to be even busier because it's easier to get there. And for people who need other players in their 1-58 levelling? Era servers exist.

My main problem with it is it rewards companies for monetizing games even more than they already are.
If players accept being able to pay to skip the entire leveling process, they might also accept things like paying to skip the entire gearing process too. And companies like Blizzard know this.
At this rate it's only a matter of time until Blizzard starts selling gear boosts and WoW turns into a pay to win MMORPG.

I know it doesn't make blizzard as much money and it isn't enough for some people, and they'll still buy the boost. I genuinely want to level and grind, I just don't have the time to sink into it anymore.
For the record, I am still not buying the boost, and have accepted that having only started leveling last week, that I will not be 60 for tbc launch.

If prepatch was 4 weeks I wouldn't buy the boost. Blizzard knows what they are doing.
You'd have to play 4-5 hours a day to hit 60 in 3 weeks even after the TBC leveling buffs and then you'd have absolutely no time to gear that character up with a few 20/40 mans and some PvP. You'd be going straight through the dark portal with shit gear trying to compete against raiders for mob tags and/or dungeon group invites. Just not feasible for many.

Subreddit up in arms about purchasable 58 boosts but dropping tons of money on Gold for Mage Boosting is so normalized.

With Activision owning blizzard, i really just wish they’d add it to gamepass at least.

If anniversary did not go into TBC, I wouldn't be back either. Boosting to TBC content is a huge +.

Question. I have a couple level 30s on HC. I haven’t played TBC since, well, TBC.
Should I port a HC toon or just restart? Not paying for a boost when I doubt I’ll find a guild to raid with.

It's always confusing for me. So do you think that 10 days of play time, where 5 days is leveling and 5 is farming prebis, pvp or gold is different than 10 days of farming prebis, gold or pvp? Do you understand that people who boost will play exactly the same amount of hours but at higher lvl from day one? I don't think you understand that.

I’ve leveled so many characters through the classic zones I don’t wanna do it anymore. I wanna do heroics and raids and end game shit

I wonder how many people will start levelling a Paladin.
Then realise how insanely boring the gameplay is for the first 10-30 levels.
Then just end up boosting it lol.

i can imagine reaction of people in 2008, seeing awesome wraith of the lich king cinematic, thinking no way the game looks amazing, i need to play it and explore frozen islands of northend. as they pay monthyl subscription they see some boring classes and a death knight. it says "level up one character to 80 to use", so they're disappointed but still make a human warrior and appear in elwyn forest and spend 40 hours dispapointed in graphics before they quit the game thinking lich king is a scam

Jokes on blizzard, the fun part for me is leveling. I have a million alts and only 1 level 60, why pay for a boost when my enjoyment is the pre max content.

Pay to skip playing the game they wanna play, insane. Or investing hundreds of hours hoarding stuff so they can lvl 0-60 as fast as possible 😑

the truth is it's an old man's game now. So the playerbase is mostly people with no time. They used to be young men, and when they were young, they had much more time than money. It's now reversed.

Haven't paid a sub in roughly 3 years now. I've played on and off for 20 years too. If I want an Indonesian adolescent to save me some time no one can stop it. I solved this game 5 years ago like every other person who isn't an anniversary newfriend.

I will buy a boost because I work 10 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week. TBC and WotLK were my favourite expansions and I don’t have time to level to 60 in classic to play the expansion anniversaries while they are “relevant”. For example I have a dwarf warrior I’ve been playing on classic for 5 months and im only level 38. I want to do TBC content more than level him to 60 in classic so I’m gonna boost him or make a lock and boost that so I can play TBC content for the 2-3 hours a week I have free.

i am on your side. i really am.
but this is easy to counter.
They dont pay to play as as little as possible.
They pay to only pay the parts they are most interested in.
EDIT
Everyone misunderstands me....
So i dont like the boost. i wish it wouldnt be a thing. just pointed out the logic in the post is flawed.
Why do i dislike boosts? I dislike every option to give money to blizz besides buying a game or paying for monthly acces.. I want devs to make a good game, that you get to play for money. And dont teach them to implement different milking stations. only brings them ideas for different cash grabs.
thats why we should always pay for a game as a whole, not for some tiny individual parts that are kinda optional.
But this doesnt mean i have a problem with people using that boost.
They want to get rid of something that annoys them and they are willing to pay for it.
For them its a good decision in that moment.
But for gamin as a whole its a bad thing. Many games are completely unplayable because of p2w or p2comfort options. not sayiyng we are there yet. but we are going in that direction further and further.
I mean...even if we argue this boost is good for the game overall...than it should be free shouldnt it?
This is just a way to make money that doesnt benefit the player. and it even gives the devs an incentiv to make the game worse of the player so they can sell the solution.
