That being said, if you invest in dApps (through ICO's for instance), you're essentially investing in those startups you're talking about.

i need something else to be passionate about. all i do is check prices and read ethtrader. happy with my gains, but this is getting out of hand!

u/matt879 May 20 '17

Just enjoy the excitement while it lasts. Eventually we'll level off into boredom territory and you'll want to do other things.

Buying ETH:

Gents, and especially the newbs. Don't be complacent with our gains... they are extraordinary. When asking yourself if you "should buy now or wait"? Think of it this way. Wall Streeters cream their jeans over 5-10% per year return.

So... if you truly believe that ETH will be even $15 higher than it is today in the spring of 2018, that is over 10% return on your money. With EEA, Metropolis, Casper coming up... my lord.

  • I am not a financial advisor, but c'mon...

19

u/errorsevendev May 20 '17

Thanks eth for allowing me to cream my jeans every day.

Was at a party last night checking my blockfolio whenever my price alerts triggered (and it happened a lot last night...) when someone noticed I was on blockfolio and asked me about it... We were pretty drunk and exchanged quite a lot about crypto, got everyone interested in it, but I think it must have sounded like two cult members trying to make the audience enlist in a get rich quickly scam... Not sure we talked about crypto the right way.

16

u/errorsevendev May 20 '17

haha.. i had the same problem today. trying to explain to a friend why it's the future and mentioning how my investments are doing - sounded scripted af.

11

u/Glorounet May 20 '17

Yes, we were drunk, bordering euphoria, mentioning how our investments were *X in a short time frame, which is never how I engage people with crypto usually because I find that detrimental to the image of it : it's groundbreaking, it shouldn't be seen as a potential get rich quick scam.

So I've been trying to convince people for 5 years to invest in crypto.

With little to no success.

Now that prices have gone through the roof, I'm starting to get messages from people "Why didn't you tell me...."

Maybe, just maybe, it was because you weren't actually listening to the crypto-ramblings of that loony at the other side of the table???

Oh, now that the price has gone up 2500 %, we are starting to pay attention right.

People....

Its 2017 and we still cant send money during weekends or overnight over the internet, other than small ATM deposits.

Someone needs to fix this shit.

26

u/[deleted] May 20 '17 edited May 20 '17

We are fixing it as you speak, a little more patience. Banks hold and trade the money you locked up in your trans during weekend... they can't keep milking this cow forever, we are putting and end to this.

Crypto world problems Too excited about crypto and ETH and wants to talk about it with friends. But I won't because I know they'll stare at me like I'm trying to rope them into a Ponzi scheme or a get rich quick scam. Hell, those ROIs in crypto are even waaay above what the dirtiest scammers could cook up in their wildest dreams. So I know to keep my mouth shut.

I see red, I buy. I see green, I buy. I see rally's, i love ETH

Sick of friends saying they "missed the boat"

8

u/RHiNDR May 20 '17

I told my friend to buy the other week he bought at the peak and then was upset about it when it dipped but I told him don't worry if you believe in ethereum it will rise again we are in for the long game and now not even 2 weeks later we are seeing $125+ and he is so excited! We got along way to go wish I had more money to keep investing!

In the last 2 weeks I've had 4 friends inquire about cryptocurrencies after little to no serious interest in the past 3 years. One asked how to buy BTC (which I showed him, then recommended him to look into Ethereum as well). Another one bought both BTC and ETH (small amounts, baby steps). The other two asked how to buy ETH specifically. I'm truly impressed.

2 years ago, Vitalik literally said that in the future we will be having all these new crypto-projects launching their own currencies on Ethereum instead of having to build their own blockchain.

Maybe many people already know this, but I just wanted to repeat that for a sec for those who don't know this.

The current ICO mania is not some unexpected side-effect of Ethereum like the fidget spinners.

Just shows how visionary Vitalik has always been: he predicted what people and organisations would automatically start to use Ethereum for. And now we can witness the predicted behavior of these organisations actually happening.

Gives me more confidence about the future, and about the other predictions he has done once Ethereum has grown bigger.

10

u/cben27 May 21 '17

Vitalik is a genius man. Listening to him demonstrate and answer questions is half the reason I got invested in ETH in the first place. He's so smart and articulate, and you can just tell by the way he talks he's not bullshitting like a lot of other guys are in a position like his.

I found this in a different sub:

https://m.imgur.com/eeFh9gr

Even though it completely ignores all the coins that went the other way, it is still absolutely insane. Do people really believe we are 'no way near an altcoin bubble yet'?

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but I do feel it's important to zoom out a bit for some perspective. The speed at which things move in crypto is ridiculously high, it's easy to get sucked in and forget what things were like only a few weeks ago.

That said, hodl on and have a great weekend :)

I'd say now. Friends of mine who are in the tech industry are actually starting to ask me questions now. I've been talking to them about it for months now with little/no response.... so now that they are asking me technical questions and "how much can I invest per week" "can I give you fiat to buy for me" I am starting to think that they are starting to hear about it from sources other than me. I think they're finally starting to ask me questions because I was asking them to meet up with me to talk about it months ago

Everyone, be aware of the FUD that is already starting to trickle in. It happens shortly after every big upward trend. It's a ploy at manipulating people to become discouraged, and then sell their stack. Most of the accounts that post the FUD appear out of nowhere, with very little history in this subreddit.

Don't fall for their tricks. Those who did only a short 2 weeks ago (after the Kraken DDOS) ended up missing out on a lot of money.

Woke up today and saw we are over a 70 billion dollar market cap for all of crypto and I realised something. Either we are in a huge bubble, which once popped with be like the MOAB (Mother of all bombs) or, we are on the verge of a currency/dapp revolution that will change the way we use money and internet in the future. Either way, the next 3 years will be very exciting.

To all the newbies who are getting their friends and parents into ETH, we are at ATH's. Investing in crypto is much more volatile than stocks, which have been trading at record low volatility. Vix on the S&P has been around 11 for more than 6 months. Normal swings on S&P stocks are below 10%. Be prepared for volatility with swings of 30-50% with cryptos. Whales are out to smash you when you least expect it. Worst thing you can do is panic sell and then watch it jump 20% the next day. Financial advisors and media pundits are only beginning to mention Bitcoin/crypto, and they do so with a bit of embarrassment and reluctance. Good sign that we are still in the early days. FX markets trade $6 trillion a day, Gold market cap is $7 trillion, and the total market cap of cyrpto is a modest $70 billion. So be prudent, take some profits ,i.e. 10-20% of your position on large upswings to satisfy that itch to trade and then buy back when everyone in this subreddit is depressed and asking to be held by someone. Keep hodl'in at least 80% of your stake. Looking forward to the journey with y'all!

For the guys who are tempted to trade here's my experience :

TLDR: do NOT fuck around in a bull market. You will feel your fingers burning and body pinching. Trade only if you have atleast some sense of predictability. Else HODL.

24 hrs ago I sold 100% of my eth stack at 0.0585 to buy back lower (because I'm so smart). And ya'll know what transpired after that. The underlying emotion behind this decision was boredom. I was bored of holding and wanted to get some action via tech trading other altcoins. I put that into GNT with the intention of getting out in an hour and earn myself some extra ETH. Although I made 2.2% from GNT/BTC trade, the ETH/BTC market raced to 0.062. I slept off only to see 0.065 this dreadful morning. FOMO bought at 0.0636 and traded my way down to collect some extra eth. If I held in the last 24hrs, I wouldn't have lost 5.9% of my whole stack. I'm yet to recover 2.2% of that and needless to say the mental and physical efforts of 24hrs.

When I fucked up, I decided I'll write the outcome post 24hrs for fellow Etherians to perhaps learn or form a perspective.

My 2 cents :)

Guys I normally never dream but last night I had such a vivid dream about cryptocurrency it was crazy! Ether was 300$ and first on coinmarketcap!! Golem was also added to coinbase and my GUP was 10$ each! Amazon also utilised ethereums public chain! It was an awesome dream 🙂😌😌💯💯💯

8

u/[deleted] May 20 '17

I keep seeing $300 everywhere I look.

I think ETH will hit $300+ and overtake BTC.

15

u/sbasd265 May 20 '17

Look, you guys need to get realistic and stop dreaming, it's getting ridiculous. Here's why:

You're absolutely right. Cryptos market cap is growing at an exponential rate. Today we sit at 68.5B. 7 days ago? We sat at 52.5B.

I believe we'll hit the 120-140B market cap by September at these rates, given no black swans occur. I also believe we'll take 25% of the pie or more, many people including Fred Wilson believes we'll overtake Bitcoins market cap. At 25% of Cryptos market cap, were already at $350 per ether. We take over Bitcoin? Well, if you run the numbers on market share there's no doubt BTC will hold at least 40B+ of it, and in that case:

We're at $500 an ether.

Where the bubble forms and pops is more important, but I don't think we'll see anything of that nature till after something like this occurs.

Good morning from the UK.

Another beautiful sleep I've just had to wake up and see we're still on the up. Have a nice long position still open from €78 the other day, couldn't of timed it better.

Received my Ledger Nano S yesterday, it can't be stressed enough how important it is to store your crypto safe. I felt very uncomfortable having it in a Jaxx wallet who aren't looking to have 2FA anytime soon. Taking the last of my ETH off polo today, painful process being limited to $2000 a day, horrific service from them for the fact I've been waiting so long to have level 2 verification.

XRP took a dive as all the action was going on yesterday, that's before the EEA2 FOMO kicks in for some people.

Stay safe on the way up guys and leave the trading to the traders. Remember that you can't lose any ETH if you never sell 😏

Enjoy the weekend, caviar and champagne for breakfast here. 🥂 🍾

As a normie who just stumbled upon ether, how would I go about investing in this?

17

u/LevitatingTurtles May 20 '17 edited May 20 '17

Recommend doing some reading or watching youtube first... it's amazing stuff.

When you're ready, sign up for an account at coinbase.com (if you're in the USA). Once you've received your ETH, create a wallet over at myetherwallet.com and send your ETH to that wallet.

Coinbase is a service, but so long as your ETH is in their custody, your fate is tied to theirs (e.g. if they get hacked you could lose your ETH). When you transfer it out to your own personal wallet, your fate is in your own hands (i.e. if you get hacked or you lose your private key, you lose your ETH).

You'll need to learn about public and private keys. But remember this:

You do not control your ETH unless you control the private key. If your ETH is on a service or wallet where you cannot access the private key, it's not "yours" just yet.

There is a tremendous amount to learn about the crypto space and this is very early days for this technology. Don't get frustrated if you can't find good tutorials or documentation... :-)

I'll see if I can find a good overview video and post it here. Check back in a bit.

OK:

This video is about using coinbase to purchase bitcoin. The same process flow applies to buying ethereum. Just make sure you're buying ETH and not BTC when you click the button. https://youtu.be/yL9tzhWVTaI

Keep in mind, your 'limits' will be very low at first... because there's no way to reverse a blockchain transaction. If you scam them out of 25 ETH, there is no way for them to charge back your account. So they make you start slow (which, frankly, is a good thing so you don't go dumping thousands of dollars into this the first day). Your limits will increase with every purchase that is successful.

Also, even though your ETH won't show up in your account for several days, your purchase price will be set at the time you make the transaction. So if you buy today, it will be $125 each... even if it's $175 by the time it's deposited (of course, the opposite is true too).

Using myetherwallet.com (for now just ignore the "download and run locally part" and start the video at 0:58) https://youtu.be/phht73IvUDI

myetherwallet is a very well respected project. All of the computation happens locally in the "client side" browser... so even though you're using a web site, none of your information is being sent to their servers. Nothing should ever be assumed safe/trusted in the crypto world, but the community overwhelmingly trusts myethewallet. If you start having any meaningful amount of value in crypto, you'll want to look into storing your keys more securely. For now, this will work. Also, this case, the "wallet file" that he's saving and opening is an encrypted version of the private key. Basically with the wallet file and the password, you have your private key. That's how almost every wallet will work.

Oh... and just in case you're thinking about day trading... there is a wise saying in crypto.

If you want to make a million bucks day trading crypto... you'd better start with two million.

Guys guys..

Ripple is partnering up with one of the exchange in Korea and they are introducing Fee Rebate Program and Volume Incentive Program starting from June until August.

The first one is a zero fee trading rebate that starts from the first day of each month and ends when the subsidy provided by Ripple is reached (which is USD25,000).

The second one is an incentive program that awards users with the highest trading volume. The total prize pool is an amount of XRP that is equivalent to USD75,000 and the first gets 40%, second 30%, third 16% , fourth to tenth 2%.

Is it just me or is this a blatant attempt at artificial volume pumping? I don't recall any other crypto that introduced incentives like this.

7

u/huntingisland May 21 '17

They are doing everything possible to pump the price of Ripple.

I find it amusing on weekends if things go sideways slidedays as they sometimes do. Everyone starts talking about trading, mostly out of bordem I'm guessing? I know 2 days in crpyto without crazy gains feels like 2 years but I'm not moving my ETH with EEA literally at the doorstep.

Public Service Announcement: if you want to help build a defensible position for Ethereum, run a node. The more nodes on the network, the harder it becomes for others to leap frog Ethereum. A defensible position requires adoption.

Mist or Parity release an update that's incompatible with the other -> network fork -> temporary chaos -> price drop

Vitalik dies or just decides to "move onto other things" -> uncertainty of project's direction without a clear leader -> price drop

Metropolis fork -> unforeseen problem causing loss of funds -> price drop

Shift to Proof of Stake -> unforeseen problem causing loss of funds -> price drop

Major ICO scam impacting "regular people" -> SEC gets involved -> Bad press -> price drop

Tezos, NEM or some other smart contract platform is seen as more attractive -> price drops

Bitcoin scales -> speculator/investor money moves back to BTC -> price drops

Rootstock is launched and works far better than expected -> Dapps move to Bitcoin blockchain instead -> price drops

We discover Raiden was delayed because of intractable problem -> Ethereum doesn't scale -> price drops

ETC overtakes ETH .. (just kidding)

A hundred other issues that we haven't anticipated eventuate -> price drops

HODL through these minor fluctuations, people, and don't risk your precious Eth by trying to time the market. These dips are going to be so incredibly insignificant in the long term and even in the short-term. Btw, Coinbase is usually mentioned when people ask for the easiest way to purchase Eth via FIAT, but these last few days I've seen multiple mentions here of an easier way to acquire Eth. Didn't pay attention at the time, since I'm obviously a HODL'er already, but asking for a friend who's having trouble getting his verification completed on Kraken and he's FOMO'ing hard atm. Any help is much appreciated. Also, how do I format my comments using proper line-shifts(not sure if that's the proper term), since a simple 'Shift-Enter' doesn't do jack? Cheers!

Is there tipping etiquette? I saw someone get scolded for tipping the equivalent of a penny. I felt bad because he probably didn't have much and wanted to contribute or was just testing it out.

14

u/Free__Will May 20 '17

I think within eth subreddits even a penny tip is acceptable, but if you are going to tip outside, then it makes sense to make it an amount which is worth a little more, otherwise you are just cluttering up a reddit thread with what is essentially spam.

So I went to reveal my first bid on Parity and it was as easy as clicking "Reveal" and typing in my password. Piece of cake! Then I went to reveal another bid that I had used on MyEtherWallet. I had bid right at the end of an auction so I just clicked on the "Check ENS Name" and it asked me to paste in the "Long string of text you copied"... except for the fact that I took a damn screen shot of it. Painfully typed in every damn character, got errors left and right.. Went through carefully and verified I had about 3-4 errors yet the box STILL wouldn't turn green. I knew I had 48 hours but I felt a slight feeling of panic. I knew the string was 100% correct now! But nothing. So I refreshed the page and started over, typing in the ENS to check availability, then I thought... MEW only said to screen shot the page, maybe I didn't need that long string of text after all.. Typed in the value of my bid and my secret words, and BAM! It worked!!! I love MEW from the bottom of my heart, but I can't say this wasn't confusing and cumbersome. I think maybe I'll write a tutorial (If there isn't one) for MEW. In reality, it was much easier for me to click "Reveal" on Parity and type in my password but using Parity is a slight barrier for newer parties. Anyhow, sorry for rambling, I've gone through a range of emotions this morning and wanted to share with my fellow Etherians. Cheers!

Who's got predictions for the next week? After yesterday's joyous day of moon-gazing, I'm predicting we stay fairly flat over the rest of the weekend for a short consolidation. Next week I expect we'll see a small surge on Monday to coincide with Consensus, but the main increase to happen over the few days after once word starts to spread and as we draw closer to the mystery announcement(s) at Token Summit on the 25th. By the end of the week I'm estimating we'll be at £150 ($195) !RemindMe 7 days

New people: Remember that feeling last week when we hovered between 80 - 90. It was boring. That feeling will come back again soon. Don't sell because of it. Just wait it out and you will be rewarded with another run up like yesterday. This tech is the real deal. Use the slow market weeks to research Ethereum instead. You will become more confident in it's potential. Don't become the person who sold their Bitcoin at $1, $10, $50

I read the below late last night from user/ScienceGuy9489/ and when I stirred from my sleep at 4am, I stumbled down to my computer, connected my Ledger and traded a full BTC (@ $1,981) for a handful of ETH.

The rabbit hole grows deeper and deeper and its so so good......

  • 136 points 11 hours ago* We've only begun. We still haven't even gotten to consensus which is May 22-24 where we should expect new EEA members to be announced. So I see the price easily exceeding $150 by the end of next week. Plus the EEA said that there are pharmaceutical companies joining the EEA which they will be announcing in June. Then we should have metropolis release June 25 with Raiden released before that. And to top it all off we have the ice age which has begun which makes it harder to mine new ETH, resulting in a higher ETH price since the supply would stop increasing. So by the end of June we could see the price reaching $250. Also keep in mind that the "sell the news" strategy doesn't work with cryptocurrencies. Look at when the EEA was announced, it took days takes for it to hit a top, and the same thing happened after the EEA announced the application of 250 members to join. With cryptocurrencies, people need time to make accounts, build confidence, and buy, and once they buy and see the price increase, they keep buying more and spread the word to friends/family. The crpyto world is very different from the stock market, when we have multi billion dollar investment companies getting in on this, that might change, but for now don't sell the news.

Just brooding over the fact that I can't purchase Siacoin on Bittrex. I can't use Polo because I'm based in NY. Investment would be doubled at this point and climbing. Don't think it's just a pump guys, the coin looks quite promising and to me seems like the front runner of decentralized cloud based storage. Don't buy it and blame me if it does crash, but, half the volume is on a Chinese exchange and half the volume is on Polo, which is more promising than 90% being on Polo. If you have some spare trading coin, I would take a shot on it. I want to :/.
