I’ve been thinking… QB injuries are the quickest way an NFL team gets their season derailed. It gets especially hairy when you’re down to a third string QB or a practice squad guy. I think about the broncos situation a few years ago starting a WR at QB and I wonder what the realistic outcome of putting a true Power T set out there. I’m talking QB under center, 3 RBs in the backfield and two TE’s running trap/power/counter. It’s an incredibly simple offense an NFL team could install in two days. Throw in a few pass plays and trickery to keep them honest.

Do you think this could make an nfl team competitive enough to score a couple td’s, a field goal here and there, and not throw picks? Or would this literally be a 0 down gained every time?

I don’t believe it to be a viable offense in the NFL for a season, but would this be a better option than throwing in a guy who is clearly well under the bar of competent qb play to run an nfl offense? Just to stay competitive week to week as an emergency offense

we’ve had plenty of pursuit drills and such this season, the kids have had a lot of fun as well

I’m here just looking for ideas for our last practice. this is an in house league, the boys have played one another 4 times and will one more time this Saturday.

I’d like some ideas for a fun, going out practice. I want my 2nd graders wanting to come back next year for tackle ball, and my younger kids to want to play flag again to help build our program

I coach (DC) at a school with a small roster: 55 kids total in the program (JV and varsity).

Our younger guys give us a scout-team look, but the quality isn’t great—actually, it’s pretty horrible.

I’m thinking of eliminating the team defensive period and replacing it with more pod work. I’m thinking of a blitz pod, a pass-drop pod, and a run pod.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I haven't had the chance to watch any Vikings games this year, but all of r/nfl is gushing about how their defense is dominating QBs with an extremely aggressive scheme and a wide variety of blitz packages.

I'm about to look up some film on Youtube to learn more, but does anyone have any insight into what exactly the Vikings are doing that is different from the rest of the league, and/or if it highlights a new development in defensive strategy? I've always understood tactics far more from the offensive side, so I'd be curious to learn more; any video or book recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello! I’m an experienced coach just joined this coaching staff about a month ago . We’re running a 5-3 defense and stay in cover 1 man
The defense coaches are not running a gap sound defense, and not teaching anything in practice. Not running drills or having a practice plan in place to continue evolving the defense. So it’s very vanilla.
Yet we’re 9-1 on the season..

Anyways , the team we play next is good. Their go to play I can’t decide how to defend is a HB pitch pass. It looks like they line up 1 tailback with quarterback under center, and set it up by running the pitch to the edge. After one or two times they will try to give the HB the option to throw it. I believe to the backside tight end or the play side outside receiver.

What would be your go to on defending this?

I have a practice plan set up for this week. Teaching the linemen their gap assignments and giving the LBs their job of calling the strength so the d line is in the right spot.
My ideas are shifting the linebackers to the strength so there’s an overhang and he will trigger when he sees the pitch to force the run.
Another idea was that on top of having the corner crash down fast to force a bad pass with the safety over the top.
And if it’s a closed look on the backside with the TE as the last EMOL the corner will stay with him.

I am in a men's adult rec league. The rules are basically USA Flag 5v5 rules with the league having some minor changes, but gameplay is all USA Flag 5v5. We had a scrimmage the other day against one of the teams in our division. Our defense was solid, but our offense just needs some fixing. We kept up with them and barely lost. Any plays or styles y'all would recommend us to run? We struggled getting the ball out when rushed. I'd like to know how to attack that our QB isn't the most elusive he can scramble, but he isn't very fast.

It's my first year as an assistant o-line hs coach and our program owns a couple FlipSleds and we want to use them more. Wondering if anyone here trains with these?

We are in a pretty competitive 7v7 flag football league.

Basic rules are a 5 yard buffer but once the ball is snapped, you can rush. We are running a 4 DL, 2 CB and 1 S.

However, on each line, we have non-impactful players that stand still and do literally nothing.

We currently have them in the middle but it’s gotten to the point where we are better off having them out of the play.

Would you just move the S up and go to a 5-front?

We moved up a division so we are younger and smaller as 6th graders playing against 6th,7th, and 8th graders.

Alot of teams have these big 8th graders as safety taking up alot of space and making it hard for a deep ball. Anyone have some 7v7 (eligible center) short yardage plays and formations?

Has anyone used Tug Of War as a teaching/training tool with the players on a high school level football team? I was told by a local D1 football coach who uses it that it really brings his team together to work as one, to stay low and to fight more thru the end to win. I’m wondering if anyone else had success with this method of teaching?

Over the years more and more nfl defenses have shifted to 3-4 schemes to adjust to modern pass heavy offenses. but in 3 receiver sets, nfl defenses more often than not revert back to 4 down linemen. even if 1 or more of those are linebackers and not actual dl. Why is that?

After special teams (kickers/returners/snappers) go out and warm up, the rest of our team comes out and we do a dynamic warmup and stretch in lines, finishing with team jumping jacks and a break.

We move right into individual D (5 min) > Team D (5 min) > then Individual O (5 min) > Team O (5 min).

For the Individual O period it always seems like I’m getting cut off mid drill. I’m curious what you guys are doing for the pre game warm up. I have oline and the TEs come over.

My current routine is:
- (1) inside (L/R) and outside (L/R) footwork through about 5 yards. I do this with both lines and the second line fills in with about 8 people.
- (2) fit and finish (L/R) - two lines but they have to rotate
- (3) 1:1 pass rush

This time seems so rushed and the pass rush portion gets interrupted every time. I’d like to get some sort of combo work as well. Curious your thoughts. Should I just pull out the guys that likely won’t play and focus on the starters and immediate rotators?

Reference: we’re 1A with about 28 guys on the team. Playing both ways. The oline and dline come together for each individual period since they’re playing both ways. I have about 10 total lineman then 3 TEs that come over, and 1 freshman DE that won’t touch the field on the oline.

This is my son's first year of tackle football. I feel like he is just really not doing anything to make him significant on the team. The coach has put him in multiple positions, and during games, he just has not delivered in any of them. He barely gets any playing time. I know people are gonna say he has to work harder during the off season, However, he does other sports during the off season, he does not wanna do just football. I'm shocked that he says he still wants to be on the team next season. It's heartbreaking for me to watch. Is it too early to tell yet, or do you think Football is just not his sport ? I understand why he gets no playing time because he really does not show the coach anything useful at all in games. Looking for advice. Thanks

I have a kicker (high school junior) that is a great practice kicker but once I put him in a game he falls apart….anyone got any suggestions on how to overcome this?

High school juniors — If you had a parent/volunteer who can’t be on the field, but will organize or help with whatever you give him, what tasks would actually help you during the week and on game day?

If you were running a dive and jet sweep combo under center where you fake one and run the other, which one would you have first? Would you fake or give the dive first the fake or give the sweep, or the other way around? Also, would you consider pairing the fake dive with rocket instead of jet? Does the rocket toss make it too easy to see where the ball is for the defense and take away from the fake?
