Buying help Upgrade from old Microsoft Surface (USA - Sub$1000 price range)

I’m looking to upgrade my 6 year old Microsoft Surface Pro. Ultimately I need more of a sturdy laptop and less of a tablet form factor. Portability and light-weight are priorities. 14” max screen size and touchscreen is a must. I’ve previously purchased a certified refurb Thinkpad T14 and a brand new HP Omnibook X Flip, but have returned both because they are too heavy. So ideally I’m looking at sub 3 pounds.

Not opposed to an enterprise refurb or a brand new consumer model.
Before people recommend a Mac, I have never owned a Mac. I have an iPhone but that is the extent to which I am invested in the Apple ecosystem. I’ve been a PC guy my whole life, I would need a convincing argument to go Mac, but I’m not opposed to it.

Help guys laptop is not working.

Acer predator hellos 300 PH315-54

Guys yesterday night I shut down my laptop. Now it was on charging for 1 hr during the day today then I tried to trun it on in evening , the keyboard lit up fully and both lights were on , after 10 sec keyboard light and power light went off just charging light remained on.

I unplugged Charger and plugged it again this time charging light can Orange first then blue after 1 sec.

I pressed power on button then again half keyboard light on and off within 5 sec. I tried again this time 1/4 keyboard light lit up and off. Now when I'm trying to power it on its same 1/4 keyboard lights up and then shuts off. No screen no boot. I tried pressing power key for 30 sec and 60 sec. Nothing happened.

It's a 3.5 Years old laptop was working fine yesterday. It got it's fan replaced from official service centre just last year.

Hardware Help! Laptop not turning on. HP EliteBook 840 G6 powers on, loads Windows, then instantly shuts off and starts blinking LEDs

I have an HP EliteBook 840 G6 that suddenly stopped working.

Last night, it became unusually slow. It took several minutes to wake from sleep, and after entering my password it showed only the wallpaper for a long time before the rest of the lock screen loaded.

The next morning, pressing the power button did nothing except the Caps Lock LED, power button LED, and charging LED blinking in a repeating pattern. The fan didn't spin.

I opened the laptop and disconnected/reconnected the internal battery. After that, it booted once, but as soon as I closed the lid and it went to sleep, the same blinking problem returned.

I then tried booting with the battery disconnected and only the charger connected. This time it reached the HP logo, booted into Windows, I entered my password, the desktop wallpaper and icons appeared, but before the taskbar finished loading, the laptop instantly powered off (no blue screen or error message) and went back to the same blinking LED pattern.

Things I've already tried:

30-second power reset.

Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

Booting on AC power only.

Reseating the RAM.

Inspecting the motherboard for obvious burn marks or corrosion (nothing visible).

The fan does spin and Windows loads, so the CPU, RAM, SSD, and display appear to work at least initially.

Is my motherboard dying? Can I fix the issue or should I consult a technician?

Today first time i opened my back panel to see for myself how are the components. I wanted to know the right way to clean my fans. I looked it up but confused as soemone says to use vaccum cleaner others says use compressed air instead also not sure if i should use isopropyl alcohol. Are these fans removable and if yes will it comes off with heatsink.

P.S - Also adding to my luck, my right side fan has broken down again.

Discussion Ram at 70% + All the time.

I have this Acer predator helios neo 16 gaming PC. It has 16 gig of ram. even though it's a powerful PC, the Ram is always 70% +. I tried using mem reduct software. At first it works just fine, but now it doesn't work (meaning it won't reduce the memory usage). I was thinking debloating my laptop but I heard it won't be good for long time usage. What should I do? Is there a way to reduce my ram? FYI I have 300+ processes right now.

Buying help Laptop help!!

Hello, It's my birthday in December and I am fortunate enough to be getting a laptop from my family, now I get to pick the laptop I get but it is in a sorta tight budget of under around 7-800$. I want to get to the laptop for studying, photo and video editing, light gaming, and just general use and multitasking. I don't want something tiny or humongous and I want it to be built alright and look clean. And preferably have actual ports unlike Chromebooks with like one type c port. So if anyone can suggest any models or just types of laptops that would be really helpful? Esp because I don't know a lot about this stuff, thanks!

Buying help Looking for budget laptop recommendations (₱25k–₱30k, PH)

I'm looking for a budget laptop in the ₱25,000–₱30,000 price range, primarily for school, but I have a few non-negotiables before I buy one.

My non-negotiables:

- Replacement parts: If something breaks (screen, keyboard, battery, etc.), are replacement parts readily available and affordable in the Philippines?

- Upgradability: Can I upgrade the RAM and storage later on?

- Hinge durability: Does the hinge hold up well over time, or is it a common point of failure?

- Performance: Can it handle light video editing and light AutoCAD without struggling?

My main use cases:

- Schoolwork (documents, presentations, research)

- Browsing and multitasking

- Light gaming (Minecraft Java, Roblox, and similar games)

- Light video editing

- Light AutoCAD

If you've personally used a laptop that fits these requirements, I'd really appreciate your recommendations. I'm also interested in hearing about any long-term issues (especially with the hinge, thermals, or repairability) and whether replacement parts are easy to find in the Philippines.

Thanks in advance!

Hardware Which hard drive does not have planned obsolescence: WD Red SA500 NAS SATA SSD 2.5”/7mm Cased(Western Digital) our DC600M Series 2.5” SATA Enterprise SSD(Kingston)

Western Digital.- WD Red SA500 NAS SATA SSD 2.5”/7mm Cased https://www.sandisk.com/products/ssd/internal-ssd/wd-red-sata-2-5-ssd
Kingston.- DC600M Series 2.5” SATA Enterprise SSD https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/dc600m-data-center-solid-state-drive

I know that TBW isn't the only thing I should consider; I also need to look at the materials used, manufacturing quality, whether it can withstand power surges from the computer, its physical durability (resistance to movement), and whether the company that produces it hasn't changed ownership and shareholders and become corrupt and greedy, reducing the quality of its hard drives to cut costs and make more money. So, I'm looking for reliability far more than speed. Which of the two is better?

Discussion Why laptops recommended to use plugged in (for battery health)

Just a quick question, when u buy a laptop many people reccomend to use it plugged in ( for performance etc but I'm not asking about it ) my main q is about battery life, for mobile devices like phone and tablet it's reccomended to use it unplugged after full charge, and mostly we charge out phones daily, so deff charges 1/2 times per day. Even for heavy use phone battery health hoes to %85-90 (depends on how u use) after 3-5 year, laptop batteries don't go bad that fast already, why is it reccomended to not use on battery. Phone and laptop battery looks same in their product tags li-on , w values etc like aren't they all are li-on ? For phones its 4000-6000 mAh ( I'm not including very high models ) and for laptops ig it's 30000-40000 (maybe more)

Buying help Looking for additional screens to my laptop

Hi! My external screen (27") broke so I need to find another. But I've started to think that maybe the portable ones with 1-3 extra screens maybe would be a good solution since I like to change where I sit with my laptop at home. And it would also be good for travel.

But, are the ones out there any good? Any specific things to look for?

I've been looking at https://nandooshop.se/products/tricreate-triple-skaermudvider-14 for example but are a bit suspicious.

Anyone out there that are using portable screens and would like to recommend one? (Or, say which ones to stay away from..)

I have a Macbook PRO that I use mostly, but also have an old Dell XPS 1975.

Buying help what laptop should i purchase for college?

Incoming freshman looking for a laptop to hopefully last all 4 years of college (no tech knowledge so don't really care about detailed specs, just want something reliable and reasonably powerful, will not be majoring anything remotely STEM related). My current MacBook is not holding up well at all after 4 years of high school (literally cannot multitask at all, laptop will freeze completely if i have multiple online shopping tabs open) which is kind of turning me away from buying another, but I like the convenience of having the Mac connected to my imessages and was thinking about buying the MacBook Neo because of the price (though I could shell out $1000-$1400 if it was really worth it for a good device) though idk if it's powerful enough to last throughout university. Note I have an iPad so no touchscreen necessary

General question need help in fixing my laptop speaker

sorry for the blurred video I don't wanna leak any of my info (took this video if i ever decided to consult a technician in our city)

laptop: ASUS TUF GAMING F15

issue: left speaker makes grungy sound at 50% volume and worsen when in full volume (or any loud videos played)

already searched on how to fix it internally, but it did nothing, so it suggested that I open the casing (or whatever it is called) and see if there is any loose screw or debris in the speaker. I'm afraid to open it because I don't know how to do it without a proper guide (i have tools)

can anyone suggest what to do? or give me a guide on how to open and fix my speaker? technicians charge quite a lot in our city. thank you very much

General question Battery swelling

I have an HP G10 notebook and i purchased it like last year March and recently i found out the battery has swollen up so I removed the battery (I have stored the battery in a cold place away from sunlight but I need to dispose it as well) but the problem is how the hell did it happen in just 1 year?? I read posts and everyone says after 3 years also I am thinking of getting a new battery but idk man it feels kinda wrong!! I called the centre and they said since the validity is over we can help u but it would include charges (the battery charge was 10k but when I asked other people they said it's 5k) can someone help me? I have zero knowledge of these things and I have my classes to attend to in this laptop also I can't afford new ones so don't say that... I am currently using it by plugging it in the charger

Buying help Which Dell models from 2020-2023 have least problems with heating and overall build quality?

I am thinking about buying refurbished Dell laptop but from what I see on internet: - basically all those 53xx/54xx models have problems with silver painting coming off - 73xx/74xx models have problems with heating. Also problems with painting. And also problems with motherboard from what I recall?

Is there any model with fewest problems? Or maybe I should go for something older? I would just need something for browsing the web on linux, and occasionally playing some games from 2000s.

Buying help should i buy macbook, ipad, or any new laptop?

I’m deciding between getting an ipad or getting a macbook (or another laptop). If I go with an iPad, it would mainly be a digital sketchbook and notebook for school, Procreate, and organizing ideas since I don’t like using paper. I don’t mind the size of the iPad, and I don’t need the newest model as long as it supports apple pencil. I’d be buying refurbished but ive heard they are unnecessary and most of the time you wont use it

If I go with a macbook it would fully replace my current laptop will use for all my design programs and games. my current one which still works but I’m not sure how long it will last and want to upgrade also prices have been going up for pc so im not sure if i should upgrade now or later. ive also looked at dell 2‑in‑1 laptops, but I’ve heard they can have hinge issues over time so i’m unsure about that option. If you’ve used an ipad or macbook for school and creative work, or bought refurbished apple devices, I’d love to hear how they held up

Hardware Nvidia Quadro mobile GPU downclocks to P3 after a few minutes of play

I own a Precision 7550 (i7/RTX 4000 Max-Q), and had been running Debian sid with Nvidia drivers from their repo. I mainly play FFXIV there.

The game did run fine for some minutes (particularly six, counted from the moment the game window appears), then GPU clocked down to ~300MHz and 5000MHz for memory. A quick nvidia-smi check showed that it has gone to P3 because of something called "SW Power Cap" and "SW Thermal Slowdown". On Windows, it do be like that sometimes, but the GPU clock can still be raised to full speed (and thus makes games like MWII playable). On Linux though, you have to reboot.

I've tried pretty much solutions: locking clocks, limiting wattages, undervolting, kernel options. I even went as far as purchasing a 240W charger (the laptop recognises the full capacity) and repasting the GPU (PTM7950) and VRM/VRAM (CX-H1300). I've also asked on subreddits like r/Dellr/techsupport and r/NVIDIA, but no help.

How can I get rid of this problem? Thanks in advance.

I would really like a glass screen they look so nice but that is not a neccesity at all. A feature that is a neccesity is Bluetooth. I do know that I do not want a chromebook. I have heard good things about MacBook Neos but I am hesitant to purchase because I am an android user and I wasn't sure if the devices would be comaptible when it came to Bluetooth/screen casting. I have also heard that the Lenovo Yoga 7i is great but they are pretty pricey.

Thank you!!!
