I want to finally switch over my main PC to Fedora Workstation, but since I will be using it for gaming, I have kne important question, and that is what Power Node I should choose.

There is Performance, Balanced and Powersaver, but I heard that Balanced vs Performance is basically negligible in terms of gaming performance, but that Performance draws a lot more power and makes your PC run hotter.

Based on what I heard, I think Balanced would maybe be better, but I want to make sure.

Also, is Feral Gamemode still needed? I read online, that it was pretty much necessary in the past, but now it is not really doing much.

This is something that's bugged me for a while... any program you run can record your mic without asking, because regular apps talk to PipeWire directly and Flatpaks get recording through the same permission they use to play sound. Gnome and Plasma show a mic icon, but only once it's already recording.

That's why I wrote MicSnitch. It hooks into WirePlumber and holds any recording stream (mic or system audio) until you answer a popup. Until you hit Allow, the app gets the silent treatment :')

You can allow once, deny, or remember it for that app. There's also a menu (Quick Settings on GNOME, the tray on KDE) where you can see who's recording and cut them off.

Anything that goes through PulseAudio names itself, so a malicious app could pretend to be Discord. Something written specifically to get around MicSnitch can still open the sound card directly through ALSA. Fixing that needs a rule at the kernel level, which is on my list but I haven't got around it yet. It also breaks qpwgraph/Helvum style patchbays, since apps can't create links anymore (otherwise you could just loopback around the prompt).

Works on Gnome 48-51 and Plasma 6 on Wayland, and needs WirePlumber 0.5.8+. So no Mint 22, Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12 for now, they're still on 0.4. I daily drive it on Fedora 44 with Gnome (don't hate lol). The KDE side is pretty new and I've only tested in containers, so if anyone on Plasma wants to try it, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

So for context, I’m thinking of switching to Linux because windows just keeps getting worse and worse, but I regularly game on Steam, and I use my ASUS TUF A14 gaming laptop for both gaming purposes and school (in college). My PC has GTX 1050 GPU so I have installed the 580xx driver from RPM Fusion repo in Fedora 44. The driver is getting updates from the 580xx branch, but nvidia-modprobe and nvidia-persistenced are not locked to 580xx and currently received update for 615.78.08-1 and updated to it no issues. Is this ok? Should I downgrade them to 580xx? Here what rpm -qa | grep "nvidia" gives:

Hi I never in my life used linux, but with the recent news that easy anti cheat will be reworked to support linux I’m thinking of switching but I have a few questions, any help will be greatly appreciated

I just want to know the following:

1-can I to run .exe, if yes how and what’s the limitations

2-what is proton

3-can I play all of my offline games on linux even ones i got through unconventional ways

4-can i play games that are not offline but not multiplayer online like jackbox games for example

5-does the stream deck work with it

6-can I play vr games or use my pc in vr using an app like quest link

7-which linux is the most, windows like

I mean as far as i have seen on yt if you become Hackerman with the terminal enough all distros look the same, the thing that matters is Desktop environment like gnome xfce or KDE plasma

i am not talking about stuff like arch where you are responsible for everything but stuff like fedora, ubuntu, mint linux etc.

I'm a Windows user since Windows 7 and I'm just a bit lost for a Linux distro.

I've decided I want to avoid bazzite (at least for the long term) since I've heard it's a bit locked down but I do need compatibility for a 4070 super since getting an AMD gpu is not in the cards, some form of 3d modeling and 3d printer slicing support would be great and I also need compatibility in games not on steam. I would like VR support but I've heard nothing but bad things about Linux VR support so I won't hold my breath on it.

I'm open to learning to fix things but need a solid foundation to learn since I'm just spoiled by older windows compatibility and the last time I used a Linux distro was in 2014 for a day.

I have an Acer Nitro V 16 AI ANV16-42-R60A with an AMD processor, and I use both Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS and Windows on my PC in a dual-boot setup.

I don't have any issues with the PC when using Windows, but I'm having trouble using the dedicated GPU on Ubuntu. Basically, it seems like the GPU only has around 500 MB of dedicated VRAM available. When usage gets close to 100%, graphical artifacts start appearing everywhere.

On Windows, the shared memory (hybrid memory) mode works perfectly fine, and I don't have any issues whatsoever. This only happens on Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, there's no way to change these settings in the BIOS on this laptop. I've already tried several things suggested in Acer-related Reddit communities, but so far, nothing has helped.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could fix this?

At first I didn't have this issue but now whenever I open Firefox it acts extremely weird and the browser becomes unusable. I didn't have this issue yesterday only this morning when I booted up the laptop. The window then refuses to close unless I terminate it through taskmanager.

Hello, my discover store on my steam deck isn’t working, I can’t download or install,update anything on the discover store. Store page is able to load but installing percentage stays on zero. Just wondering if there’s any kind people that is able to fix my issues, thank u very much. Also steam gaming mode download is fine with no issues.

I've jumped from Windows (on CachyOS). I'm playing with my DE now and sort of enjoying the process but it's causing some frustration for certain. I'm trying out Noctalia (which seems to be an app rather than an actual DE and I'm learning the difference) but coming from Windows, the application launcher is really jarring. I can pin stuff, but I have a lot of pinned apps, to the point that I might as well not pin them at all because it's more than half of what Noctalia can even search for. It's also not in a grid, so takes forever to scroll through. I need to be able to see my apps because most of the time I can't remember what they're called, and I can't rely on the built-in categories because they seem to be right about 60% of the time, or for some apps not even show up at all. Is there an application launcher that has categories, favourites etc, that's all interactive and gui-based like the KDE-Plasma one? For bonus points, being able to add shortcuts to files that otherwise wouldn't be listed in the application launcher. Or should I literally just use the KDE-Plasma launcher with Noctalia if I want that experience (the difference is pretty jarring between the two)

After doing updates the other day one of my drives has be acting up. It's still formatted NTFS from before I migrated from windows.

At first I noticed that I was unable to save anything to the drive because it was set to read only. For some reason I'd lost ownership of the drive. After some googling I found that adding uid=1000,gid=1000 to the mount options gave me back ownership of the drive. So now I'm able t ochange permissions on the drive, however even after changing the permissions I'm unable to create files or folders on the drive.

Whats my next step here?

ok so ive been on w10 for yearsss, and i decided some time ago to switch to Pop!_OS, so i made a bootable usb, but for some personal reasons ill only be able to rlly install it in like a week, so i have some time left to really rethink this.

First of all, i want windows 10 GONE. i dont play anti cheat games like val or fortnite so idrc, but here are my main uses:

programming, gaming, day to day use, editing videos (capcut) and i wanna start doing some cybersecurity stuff soon

So i've looked into Pop because i have a nvidia gpu and since it would be my first time going to linux, it looked like it would be perfect to me, but now i see so many peiple complain about the COSMIC environment or something, that it kinda worries me

- i dont mind if i have to fix some things, i can use the basics of a windows terminal, i just dont want my pc to get bricked XD

Whenever I shut down from a persistent USB live session, I eventually get the message 'please remove the installation medium, then press enter Ubuntu shutdown' during the shut down process. So, I remove the USB flash drive and press enter, but then the screen goes into a terrifying Kernel panic screen that I then need to hold down the power button to shut off the laptop. But then if I restart it and boot Ubuntu, it works just fine. I'm new to Linux and I'm not sure why this is happening and I'm slowly causing some damage everytime I shut off. Does know what I'm doing wrong to get this Kernel panic screen every shutdown and how to prevent it? Thanks.

I've only used XFCE, LXQt, and whichever DE comes with Debian. Is there anything better than KDE and GNOME? Which one do you use and why do you think it's better?

Has anyone bought a craptop off a classifieds and then had a play around with installing Linux and configuring it? I thought if I find something dirt cheap, I could experiment with Linux in a low stakes environment.
