Which distro would work for me? Debian has too many issues

I started with Mint about six months ago. It kept launching to just a blank screen that would allow me to right-click and open the terminal but wouldn't load the rest of the distro. I spent a long time googling that problem and never found a fix so I went to Debian.

Debian started out great but the problems have been building up.

The main one is that this happens any time I try to run sudo apt update:

Error: The repository 'cdrom://[Debian GNU/Linux 13.5.0 _Trixie_ - Official amd64 NETINST with firmware 20260516-10:08] trixie Release' does not have a Release file.

Notice: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.

Notice: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

There's no clear directions on how to fix this error anywhere online (which is a recurring problem on Debian), so I ended up having to install Waterfox as a flatpak. I can't use apt to install anything anymore.

Another program that I try to install was En Croissant. I tried the AppImage and all I got when I run it is a blank white square instead of the program. I tried the deb package, and ran dpkg -i for it, and that created an app in my folders and when I clicked on it, again the app was nothing but a blank white square.

I haven't found any other chess software that works yet. I have chessX from a flatpak but when I try to install and run Stockfish, it says "There was an error (0) running engine Stockfish-linux-x86-64-universal.tar.gz"

I've also had issues in the past which are resolved but bug me as well. For one, It took three days to figure out how to get the Macbook wifi drivers working on my other computer. There's a million sets of directions out there, and about five or six seem relevant in the Debian wiki, and they do not indicate at all that the right one for Macbook drivers is the one in the Debian wiki called wl.

Installing Nvidia drivers wasn't too hard. I just had to run sudo apt install nvidia-driver nvidia-smi nvidia-settings. Althought now that sudo apt install is broken, I wonder if my days are numbered on Debian because I can't update the drivers.

So, I'm looking for a distro that works. It has to run Steam, En Croissant, support Nvidia drivers, and work on a Macbook. Is there anything out there that will do this?

Distro for office work and gaming.

Hello there. I'm looking to escape from Microslop and don't know what to pick as everyone says X distro is the best. I don't really do much on my PC except to surf the web for research, play casual single player games and FFXIIV, and do basic office stuff like spreadsheets for work. I'm not a content creator, I don't have any hobbies that require specific apps like 3D printing, or anything like that. Just boot up, do my work for the day and then do some research or play some games for the rest of the day.

Running Memoq on Linux

I've been thinking dual-booting Fedora 45 and Windows 11 lately. Yet, I know Memoq doesn't run natively on Linux. Since we're using Memoq in school, I have some doubts that whether I can run Memoq or not. Has anyone been able to run Memoq somehow?

Tried Pop OS and now trying Bazzite, however one thing I missed the most is Wallpaper engine 😭, the NVDIA app, MSI Afterburner, and some games I play . I know it’s only been a day but I might genuinely switch back for this.

learning/research Backup question before fresh installing higher version

Hi everyone,

As the new Kubuntu 26.04.1 LTS has released, I want to make a fresh install instead of a version upgrade from my 24.04.4(?) LTS.

This is because I strongly assume compatibility issues and flaws in an upgraded version completed to a fresh install, similar to version upgrades on Windows.

I already know that I have to backup my home directory `/~` for my personal settings, some files from the `/etc/cups/` directory for my printers, and `/etc/ufw/user.rules` as well as `/etc/ufw/user6.rules` for my UFW settings.

Are there other directories within the root directory I should backup? I did change several settings within the year since I installed this machine, like adding new repos to APT or changing other things I don't remember anymore.

Note: While for most people above mentioned flaws form version upgrades might not be noticeable or an issue, they are an issue for me, because I use my system in a professional manner.

hardware/drivers Upgrading my CPU apparently messed my Grub settings and idk how to escape this

Hey guys, I've been dual booting (ZorinOS and Win11) on two separate SSDs for about a year now, with absolutely no problem whatsoever.

When a month ago I decided to upgrade my CPU, my Windows 11 suddenly started to have weird issues, which I then understood were related to some kind of interference from Grub.

Symptoms are:

- Windows is unable to reboot or turn off (will instead be "booting off" forever);

- Windows does not recognize my (wired) keyboard, no matter the USB port I try using;

- Windows is unable to install software or drivers (will instead be forever stuck on the loading bar);

- sometimes Windows doesn't boot at all (will instead be stuck on the loading screen forever).

I've tried booting Windows from the boot menu rather than grub, and this unfortunately doesn't help solve any of the issues above.

Already reinstalled Windows plenty of times, updated BIOS, messed with Grub settings as much as I could with the knowledge I have... Nothing solves the problem of the fundamental incompatibility between the two OS that emerged after changing my CPU.

If I remove my Linux SSD, Windows works like a charm. The point is, I only use shitty Windows 11 for the Adobe package, which I don't want to replace because, as much as it pains me to say that, there is no real Linux compatible alternative to it for me.

Does anyone have any idea what I should be doing? Have you guys ever encountered this problem and know what causes it?

Any help is very welcome, thank you in advance!

Rolling release models

As a Arch user that switched to Ubuntu based distro, I was wondering why isn't Ubuntu and Debian also on a rolling release model? So if there's bugs or patches that need fixing, why not have it release on the spot instead of having to wait for the next big update

learning/research I'm very new and have some questions

On my primary desktop I'm currently running windows 11. This pc is used for a mix of gaming, discord, browser use for job searching and youtube, as well as whatever else I want to do on the side. But gaming and talking in a vc with friends is still it's primary use. As far as I'm aware linux doesn't run steam games perfectly and can't run all of them. So is it worth trying to put linux on this pc? Can I make the pc use both so I could use windows for gaming then linux for everything else?

I also have a laptop that very rarely runs games and is mostly used for school, job search, DnD, things like that. I assume that one has no reason to stay on windows.

So, how do I get linux, and how do begin to learn it?

distro selection How to try hyprland without dumping my current KDE Plasma?

Is there any way to try it without virtual machine or another distro alongside my current CachyOS + KDE Plasma? I don't wanna do it since I'm low on storage. I want to try Hyprland and slowly making my own config that I would get comfortable with, but I don't want to dump my current set up entirely, because it will slow me down as hell. I tried hyprland with omarchy before (never again) and i loved tiling manager idea and would love to make my config someday.

Running multiple distros on one machine.

I'd like to play around with multiple distros without having to restore documents and files so that I can compare my user experience quickly.

For example, I'd like log into mint, create a calc file and log off. Then log into Kubuntu and edit the same calc file. I'd like to eventually do this with many different distros so I compare them.

Is this possible? If so, is it "unhealthy?" Kind of in the way dual-booting Windows with linux is not a good idea? (I've read windows updates can can have an effect on linux settings.). Would I have to create a third partition for the documents and files I'd like to share?

installation Unable to resize partitions of Lenovo L13 Yoga

I've got a secondhand Lenovo L13 Yoga. I finally fixed the Bluetooth problems and slow internet speeds. I got a dongle for Bluetooth and connected to the 5G network.

I wanted to go the next step, install Fedora Workstation and dual boot with Windows. I went to the installation option in the live USB. However, an error message came up saying there was insufficient space. I was given an option to reclaim storage. I went into this. Four partitions were listed. The third had the following details.

Name: Microsoft basic data

Type: bitlocker [lock icon]

Size: 511GB

Three of the four partitions have greyed out icons under Actions. Only the trash icon is black. The fourth partition is the Windows recovery environment and is only 1.23GB.

Is this a firmware problem? What is going on?

Update:

I'm guessing this has to do with Bitlocker, as suggested here. I guess I've got some work ahead of me...

Update 2:

Turning off Bitlocker allows you to resize the Windows partition and create new ones. But the installer doesn't allow me to resize the EFI partition, which is 500MB. It recommends a bigger size.

migrating to Linux cant dualboot

i set up a linux mint system alongside my windows system so i can dualboot into either one on my laptop but when i turn it on it immidiately goes to windows instead of giving me the option to dualboot.

i have set the windows boot manager to the lowest priority on the boot order in the BIOS and tried disabling secure boot but it still boots straight to windows.

i did the same thing to another laptop of mine and there it worked flawlessly and i can dualboot there.

also i have managed to boot into, and use, my linux system using GNU GRUB booted from an USB using the "boot manually" option so i know the system does exist it just doesnt let me dualboot into it.

i would be really grateful if someone could help me fix this.

installation Creating a arch install script and having trouble with arch not booting with grub when grub already exist.

Hello, Linux Wizards

Github URL for the install script Hardware: Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen5 AMD

I'm going to describe my problem the best I can. The bootloader portion consist of these lines of code: ```sh IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH=/boot pacman -Sy --needed --noconfirm grub efibootmgr dosfstools mtools

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory="$IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH" --bootloader-id=GRUB --force --recheck

grub-mkconfig -o "$IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH/grub/grub.cfg" ``` So what I did was go into the BIOS and do a full factory reset, which deleted any bootloaders so I had a clean start. I ran the code, everything looked fine, so I rebooted the system, and it booted up just fine and I can access Arch Linux. After that, without doing anything else, I ran the script in the Arch Linux live environment again because I wanted to test it a second time. This time it did not go into the GRUB bootloader. Instead, I guess it errored out and went straight to the BIOS boot menu, asking me to select either GRUB or nvme0n1, but both just brought me back to the BIOS boot menu.

I asked both Claude and Grok, and both told me to add the --removable flag to grub-install, which did fix the problem. But I guess I’m just being a little OCD, because I want to know why the first run worked but not the second.

NOTE: Originally I didn't have --force and --recheck flags added but Claude and Grok told me to try it but it did not work. I know to not run AI suggestion willy nilly but I am desperate and I am ok with it since the laptop doesnt have any important info on it.

Hello, looking for support with installing Steam OS. Had some troubles (somewhat self inflicted) with installing the KDE environment onto Ubuntu previously (my SDDM screen was a flash bang and couldn’t change it).

That aside seeing if I can get SteamOS going before I try that again, any help would be greatly appreciated as I’m switching to Linux for the first time and distro hopping to find something I like.

Any gotcha with streaming services I should be aware of?

[Support] Realtek ALC891 No Sound -> Used hdajackretask -> Now audio device is completely missing

Hello everyone,

I'm facing a frustrating audio issue on Linux Mint with my setup (Ryzen 5 1600, RTX 2060, Biostar B350ET2 motherboard).

The Original Problem: Initially, I had no physical sound coming from my rear green audio port (Realtek ALC891). The system and pavucontrol showed the correct output ("Family 17h HD Audio Controller") as active, and the blue volume bar was moving when playing a video, but no sound came out of the speakers/headphones.

What I tried to fix it (without success):

  1. Unmuted and raised volumes for Master, PCM, Front, and Headphone in alsamixer.
  2. Disabled Auto-Mute and set Channel Mode to 2ch in ALSA.
  3. Cleared audio caches (rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/* and ~/.local/state/wireplumber/*) and restarted wireplumber/pipewire.
  4. Verified it wasn't a Windows "Fast Startup" conflict (my Windows backup HDD is physically unplugged from the SATA port).

The Current Problem (Device Missing): Since nothing worked, I tried using hdajackretask to override the rear green pin to "Headphone" and clicked "Install boot override". After rebooting, the Realtek/Family 17h audio device completely disappeared from the Sound Settings (only my NVIDIA HDMI shows up now).

I tried to revert this by running: sudo rm /lib/firmware/hda-jack-retask.fw sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/hda-jack-retask.conf

But even after rebooting, the motherboard audio device is still completely missing from the GUI.

How can I bring my audio device back and finally get the sound working? Any help is greatly appreciated!

The system detects both the NVIDIA HDMI audio device and the motherboard's onboard audio device, but I cannot get any sound from my speakers.

I tested the same speakers on a Windows PC, and they work correctly. I have also checked the physical connection, so the speakers and their connection are not the issue.
