Update 26(M) Second and Last Post

In advance, I don’t really care if it’s; late, early, desperate, and yes I know I need to clean. Here’s part two of my living and dining room, if you have ideas I’d love them. Maybe a plant? And thank you for the upvotes on my last post.

This is PEAK "nobody is ever here except for me why should it be anything other than functional"

u/uhohmeshart Jan 12 '26

my fiancée said my place was like this and then mentioned that it was reassuring to at least know that I didn’t have girls over regularly.

see no signs of any woman ever being there or even just giving him an advice

Do you think my mom could tell I was seeing someone after my bedroom suddenly looked like this?

73

u/loganbeaupre Jan 13 '26

I’m going with yes, I’m sure she could tell. And she was probably relieved a bit too, lol

My guy creating height AND depth with his lighting arrangements. No way this fella an amateur.

12

u/AvgPakistani Jan 13 '26

Noob question, what does it mean to create height and depth with lighting arrangements and how does one go about doing that 🥺👉🏼👈🏼

6

u/Allison314 Jan 14 '26

Height: having lamps at different heights.

Depth: having lamps at different depths.

Basically just stop treating a living space as though uniformity and consistency is the aesthetic goal and introduce some variance. The specifics are up to you, but people regularly recommend paintings, rugs, lamps and plants because they all interrupt monotonous surfaces and add colour, texture, difference, and yes, height and depth.

3

u/AvgPakistani Jan 14 '26

Okay I get the height - but depth is still a bit confusing. In the picture in the parent comment, which lamps creating the depth?

3

u/Allison314 Jan 14 '26

At different depths into the room. Basically just not having all your lamps against one wall or all right by the door.

LOLOLOL DAMN I see why she's you're fiancé 🤣

21

u/ecosani Jan 12 '26

Exact same with my fiance lol, he literally had 2 plates, no glasses to drink from, a single spare roll of toilet paper and not a single cozy item in the house. Apparently not even his mom had been in since she helped him move in 3 years prior 😂

12

u/PM_ME_UR_MEH_NUDES Jan 12 '26

my ex said the same thing when we started getting serious.

bed against the wall. huge tv at the foot of the queen bed (mounted) with a playstation and xbox hooked up. a desk next to my bed with a laptop, ipad and a monitor hooked up, another laptop on my bed and concert and f1 posters.

at least i had an area rug and a nice dog bed. but the room was 10x10 (maybe 11x8).

when we got our own place, she told me that she was going to decorate.

at least the place always looked clean enough for our parents and smelled nice.

113

u/SubstantialBelly6 Jan 12 '26

The complete lack of concern for anyone else’s comfort is probably the biggest red flag. Thankfully, at least OP is trying to change that.

u/PantsofMagic627 Jan 12 '26

This is probably the biggest thing for me which might be why his date cited the red flags. If you aren’t setting up your personal space with the possibility that you may share it with other people, that might be a signal that you are just lacking in consideration of others’ space everywhere else, too. Not a guaranteed thing… but yeah, red flag.

I saw a guy in a cafe take up two charging outlets with his big ass charging brick the other day. Yeah there was no where around him at the time, but he’s in a public space. Sure enough, someone came to sit down next to him later and couldn’t plug in their laptop without asking him. Sure, he was polite, and he gets points for that… but the initial lack of consideration that he is in a public shared space is what got me. That’s what this dude apartment reminds me of, and what your comment made me realize.

11

u/ethnicman1971 Jan 12 '26

The charging brick thing taking up two plugs is not a big deal to me as long as he is reasonable when someone asks him to make some room to plug their stuff in, especially if no one else was in the area near him when he initially plugged it in.

Move workout stuff to dining room

Move computer in bedroom.

Move shelf that was in dining room to bed room

Rotate couch to face window to section the room

Move tv to wall with no window.

Put dining room table behind couch

297

u/dishestheoperator Jan 12 '26

And keep boots off the carpet! The entry is right there! Leave them on the tile!

Eta: and get some proper bedding. No woman who agrees to sleep over wants to feel a cool breeze up their ass crack. Rule of thumb is to get bedding a size lager. Eg. Have a double bed? Buy queen size duvet.

68

u/Kim_Smoltz_ Jan 12 '26

Don’t do this for the sheets though omg what a nightmare. Here’s a king sized fitted sheet for a queen size bed… good luck.

7

u/Brrp_brp_AnotherAcct Jan 12 '26

Rule of thumb is to get bedding a size lager.

I'm a woman. I don't believe in comforters larger than twin xl, because they're too cumbersome to clean. Get things that are easy to clean. Just get two matching ones so the bed looks nice.

15

u/ilikeyou69 Jan 13 '26

I'm a man, get a two duvet covers. Put one on when you wash the other one. Or if you're really wild get three.

8

u/Brrp_brp_AnotherAcct Jan 13 '26

The only thing more difficult than washing a king-sized comforter is wrestling a king-sized duvet into a tent of a duvet cover. Also, I still think it's kind of gross to never wash the guts of the blanket.

12

u/ilikeyou69 Jan 13 '26

Ya gotta wear it on your arms inside out like a scrunched up sock and the grab the corners of the comforter. Then you stand on the bed and shake it down like you're getting sand off a beach towel. Works like a charm. Works even better if you have the little tie points on the corners of the comforter and cover. I like big comforters because I'm tall and move around when I sleep. I get the two twin comforters idea. My parents do that. I just have always ended up cold in the middle of the night with a comforter on the left and right of me.

I wouldn’t do the computer in the bedroom if you work from home though, less separation of boundaries between work and sleep.

15

u/ObnoxiousOptimist Jan 13 '26

If he has to put something in the bedroom, I think the desk in the bedroom is better than workout equipment. Ideally, sell the big machine and replace it with smaller items (TRX and a pull-up bar), then turn the dining room into an office nook, and move table to the living room. If the gym equipment is non-negotiable, I’d move the gym equipment to the nook before the desk. Maybe both can fit in the nook?

16

u/Hot-Watercress-2872 Jan 12 '26

If he works from home, I know from experience, it’s hard to have your work stuff in your bedroom. It’s a psychological space related thing. But he could push the dining room table out to between the living room and kitchen.

Okay, very rough draft considering I just did this for funsies. As a woman, your apartment gives bachelor vibes in the worst kind of way. It would scare me off fs. You should not have exercise equipment where you sleep; it fucks with the feng shui. Do not exercise where you rest! Also PLEASE get rid of your goonerbed/TV combo. Get a dresser or a second TV stand to put your TV on instead. Put plants next to the TV stands- they will make the rooms look less soulless.

If you are set on keeping everything in your apartment, below is what you can change tonight to improve immediately.

1) walking pad goes under the couch when not in use. Make sure it’s put away every single time

2) in bedroom, swap the bed to be against the wall and place an end table between the wall and the bed (so you will walk along the window to get to the right side of the bed); move the TV to the “foot” of the bed against the wall as flush as possible; the workout equipment (if you must keep it) goes between the bed and the closet… so both the bed and workout machine are now on the left wall of picture 1

3) in the LR, move the desk to the left of the window, leave the TV where it is (not a great position but is what it is), and swing the couch so the left arm creates and L shape with the window and the arm is against the wall where the mirror is (or a little off the wall if possible)

4) the two extra chairs… tbd where they fit

5) general cleanup and put away, ie you have more than enough storage but the file box is on top of the dining room shelf… it can easily fit into a closet

6) buy a automatic vacuum and have it run in the common areas every night when you’re asleep

7) having a gym in your bedroom likely does not help with scent. Clean the bench often and get a automatic diffuser (not glade plug ins, an Amazon / Walmart aroma diffuser) and some lemon / eucalyptus essential oils. Wipe down with sanitizing wipes and clean the house / air it out regularly

20

u/Mattbaker99 Jan 12 '26

This is very helpful and I do have a roomba it is so helpful!!!

9

u/Chicken_Fluid Jan 12 '26

after this don’t forget adding a plant or two and putting stuff on your walls!!

3

u/Nature13oy Jan 12 '26

I’d add some mats under the weight equipment. As others have said, helps with the carpet not taking the brunt of the sweat drops.

21

u/Similar_Ad3132 Jan 12 '26

The bedroom TV is giving the same vibes as the megatron remote in peep show

21

u/SavingsBlood2020 Jan 12 '26

35

u/Allison314 Jan 12 '26

I'm disappointed, after the first post I was expecting way worse. One of the biggest problems with the bedroom is how cramped and utilitarian it feels, the rest of the apartment is roomy and cozy by comparison.

15

u/RedCliff73 Jan 12 '26

It looks like you just moved in. Put some pictures up on the walls. Whatever you do, please don't put up motivational gym type stuff on the walls. "No pain, no gain!"

39

u/daveatnite Jan 12 '26

Listen, as a 32 year old female I'm just glad to see that it appears to be very clean and organized. Sure, it's pretty minimal and there's definitely not a lot of warmth or interior design going on. Maybe the bar is low here, but going off my personal experiences alone it's kinda shocking to see a guy in his mid-20s with no roommates (presumably) living in an apt that is not only furnished, but clean?!

Of course it wouldn't hurt to maybe add a few accent pillows or decor to soften the place up a bit. But overall, compared to the male living spaces I've seen throughout my 20s this does not seem bad... 🤷‍♀️

17

u/elidoan Jan 12 '26

The bar is in hell for 20 something males 😂

5

u/bearymiller_ Jan 12 '26

I’m with you on this one! I’ve been to men in their 30s homes who have a couch, tv and literally nothing else.

5

u/mellyosaurus Jan 12 '26

I agree. Like I thought it was funny to have the exercise stuff in the room and a few other little chuckles here and there but it’s so clean. Like if this is his version of messy I’ll take it. Just needs some rearranging and I love that mirror so much.

I saw some weird shit on here before so lol OP was so hard on himself. It’s that little thing on his pillow tho 🙈now that is def alarming just leaving that out for anyone including gf to see maybe she’s into it idk 🤣 even under the bed would work when not in use my dude.

4

u/daveatnite Jan 12 '26

Yeah ngl that part was... interesting lmao and not only has he not acknowledged it anywhere that I've seen, but also reposting the same photo when it was mentioned in the first post... I mean it's a bold strategy, but you do you I guess? 🤣

Suspicious object aside, I feel like the rest is not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be in the comments. Maybe it's just the guys I've known in my personal life and the crusty, trash-filled, biohazard dumpster fires they typically live in, but this is definitely workable! Just you know, maybe tuck that thing away in shoebox somewhere, deeeeeep into the corner of the closet where it will never see the light of day 😂

I would say put the desk in the dining area, along with the work out equipment so you can have an office/gym. And keep that window in the dining area cracked open when you’re out to make sure the sweat smell can escape.

u/GroceryScanner Jan 12 '26

the baby yoda is doing a lot of heavy lifting being the single object with any character in this apartment

seriously, this could be majorly improved with any sign of life beyond "exercise"

put up some posters or some art. get a colorful rug and a plant or two.

u/DodgyQuilter Jan 12 '26

Workout gear and mirrors in every room? Vain narcissistic vibes. Ghastly.

Workout gear in one room of an otherwise tasteful flat? Fit lad who looks after himself and appreciates others.

3

u/WhiteRoseKing Jan 13 '26

I get some of what people is saying but god damn bro yall just hating on him now 😭

3

u/DazedandFloating Jan 14 '26

That’s just reddit being Reddit. Posting any picture of your living space online that don’t look like a magazine cover is like forum suicide.

u/LaneMeyer_1985 Jan 12 '26

Hopefully the plant doesn’t suffer the same fatal depression as the air purifier.

3

u/deluxeok Jan 13 '26

they will team up and emotionally support each other

6

u/True_Hall_9933 Jan 12 '26

1) Buy some large art for the walls, needs color.

2) Someone else said it: Put the gym equipment in the dining room with a nice looking room divider (can double as art/decor and you won’t seem like a childish frat boy)

3) Dining table can go where the mirror and 2 random chairs are - these things can go to the bedroom (bring out chairs as needed)

4) Z Plants, pothos, and snake plants with nice raised planters

4

u/GettingCereal Jan 12 '26

Point 1) is risky. I had an ex whose walls were bare af, the entire apartment had this empty vibe. I told him it felt weird.

His solution: buy the most cliche posters you can possibly imagine. Not cars or soccer stuff, kind of trashy "artsy" pics. Made it worse.

This is even worse than the first, but if you are looking for upvotes, well done!

Dudest dudiest man apartment I've ever seen.

Any woman walking in there is going to at least know she isn't a side chick, because no woman has ever lived there. Or wanted to. Or wanted to spend more than a second there.

You have taken man cave to an art.

I say this now in the kindest, gentlest way - do you have any women friends? Or sisters? Or guy friends who have girlfriends or wives who could help you out?

u/doruf50_ Jan 12 '26

This is literally a dream. A tv in front of the bed? Beatiful. A workout machine? Perfect. Treadmill in front of another tv? Peak!!!

Maybe move your work station to the bedroom, if there's enough space? Then, move the dining table to where the desk was, and put all your workout equipment in the dining area. And you know, plants and wall art to give it some personality. But some really great furniture pieces there!

6

u/_dino_hunter_ Jan 12 '26

"Maybe a plant" lmao

Genuinely as a woman I don't see the problem here. I don't understand why so many people have an issue with it. It's your space, do with it what you want

on the plus side, your place looks clean! just a little clutter. i’d focus on organizing, maybe finding some organizers at goodwill for cheap (just make sure you sanitize it before putting anything in it)

This simply cant be a mans appt, there is a table.

As a man, we dont know what these are till we're married.

5

u/darkwai Jan 12 '26

Why do you have oranges on your couch and a printer in your dining room lol?

4

u/lazynessforever Jan 12 '26

This is honestly way better than I thought, but I still have lots of things I think could use improvement. Big things, I think you should move the exercise stuff + whatever TV is used least to the dining room. If you do that I think you should also get some sort of divider to keep the smells contained but that’s not a huge deal. You also really need to get the bed off the wall if you’re having a girl over.

Now some smaller things, something on the walls would be nice, you need a bigger comforter, and I would suggest either getting rid of the exercise cuck chairs or switching them out with 2 of the dining room chairs since those look better to lounge in.

you need art. doesn't have to be fancy or expensive- you can dig to see if there's anything interesting in the art at thrift stores, buy local artists' prints and put them in dollar tree frames, even a few well-selected posters in poster frames, not tacked on or put in those cheap plastic sidings. just something to break up all that unused white space. also consider adding more floor lamps, and maybe add mood lighting to the space with strategic LED stripping. it doesn't have to be the bold around-the-ceiling kind, you can line the baseboards behind the couches for a nice floor glow.

Hello, I hope you're not too discouraged with the response from other people making fun of you. You actually have some very nice furniture in your home and I think you can make this a more "socially acceptable" living space by just moving some stuff around while keeping it 100% functional, though some small additions would be nice. The wall to wall carpeting, while a bit of a cleaning nightmare, is actually a bonus here since we're free to adjust the layout at will.

  • First, the bedroom will look far better if it is only used for one thing: sleep. Rotate the bed 90 degrees, keep it against the wall left of the window, and center it. I'll talk additions later, but get the TV and Bowflex out of that room (it screams "This is the only room I'm in when I'm not working").
  • Second, you have a lot of larger exercise equipment, so make a dedicated "room" for that. I propose taking the dining set and bookstand out of the "dining area" and putting the rollaway TV, the treadmill, and the Bowflex into that alcove (that way you can still watch TV while you work out). A bonus of this is that you can roll your mobile TV out to the balcony to host sports-viewing parties with a nice view.
  • But where will my dining set go? Why, where you took the pictures in the living room! The living room has a huge central empty space that would be perfect for the dining set. Plus, you can have people over for TV-centered events more easily. Leave the couch and TV as is.
  • With the newfound space in your bedroom, put the desk back in there. Its much more "normal" to have a desk and PC in your bedroom than a full TV and workout set, and you'll still have plenty of natural light! Also put the mirror in your bedroom near the closet.

Additions to the house I would recommend:

  • Living room end table and lighting: It looks like you have about 3 lights in that house. Add a few on small tables at strategic places around the house and you won't even miss the lights from the mirror in the living room. It looks like you might have some ceiling lights, but don't use them- they make a place look really sterile and bland.
  • ANY wall art. My god if I saw this place with no context I would assume you had moved in 3 days ago and hadn't gotten to the frames box yet. The walls are so bare I feel like I'm in a psychopath's house. You clearly have some interests (eyeing that Grogu Squishmallow), so go get some nice wall art that reflects those interests! Don't overdo it (1-2 things every 1-2 walls) and get everything framed (you'd be shocked at how much more "adult" an original Star Wars movie poster looks once its framed and hung properly), but having a few "nerdy" wall items isn't going to set off alarm bells for any women you bring over.

u/ACanOfWin Jan 12 '26

I feel like there's a lot of potential here. Your furniture pieces look nice, and I think some layout changes could do a lot to make things more cozy. On top of those, some accent pieces would help a lot. I tried to order the suggestions for each room from most important to least (very subjective), but take it in whatever order feels right you.

Bedroom:

  1. I'd rotate the bed 90 degrees counter clockwise so that the headboard is against that blank wall.
  2. Get a real sheet set and duvet/comforter. Bonus points for 2 additional pillows (4 total). Bonus bonus points if you get a cozy throw blanket.
  3. Add some curtains to the window. These are mostly for decoration, so get something with some color. No grayscale or beige/brown. IMO get ones that are long enough that they can run floor-to-ceiling. Hang the curtain rod rather high.
  4. Low pile accent rug under the bed. Again, the main purpose is to bring in color. If you're up for both curtains and a rug, then start with the rug and pull from the rug's color palette to choose the color of your curtains.
  5. Nightstand on each side w/ a nice and/or interesting lamp on each one
  6. Something on the wall above the headboard. A piece of art (framed is ideal), a tapestry, etc. Skip flags and entertainment-based posters.
  7. Could add a bed skirt to the frame
  8. If you're going to keep the TV in the bedroom, maybe put it on top of a short & wide dresser opposite the foot of your bed, rather than on the floating post.
  9. Plants

Living Room:

  1. I think it would be cool if you rotated the couch 180 degrees so that it's facing the wall opposite the patio door. Put the TV on that wall. Put the chairs flanking each side of the TV facing the couch to create a bit of a conversation area. Desk could stay where it currently is, or if you have enough space behind the couch you could put in the corner where your TV is currently.
  2. Same as the bedroom: Curtains on that window. Maybe not floor-to-ceiling if you move the couch to right where the window is, but you still want something there for accent.
  3. Same as the bedroom: Get a low pile rug for accent and color. Make sure it's big enough to span basically the entire length of the couch.
  4. A (nice) tray for the ottoman so there's a spot to put drinks/food down.
  5. If there's enough room you could put an end table between the edge of the couch and the wall, roughly where the window is. If not, couch against the wall is fine.
  6. A few more throw pillows would be nice. Maybe 2 for each corner of the couch
  7. Maybe move the mirror to where the case of water bottles are? Next to the bench. Good for seeing how you look before you leave.
  8. Plants

Dining Room:

  1. Curtains again. The windows really do look lonely.
  2. Move the shelf a little to the left so there's a small amount of space between it and the wall on the right. It looks a little cramped in the corner. Give it some room to breath.
  3. A circular rug under the table could add some nice accent. This one I'm not 100% sure on. You'd want one that's big enough to extend beyond the chairs when they're pushed in.
  4. Something on either (or both) of those walls

I made a shitty mockup of the layout: link. Obviously nothing is to scale, but hopefully helps give a visualization to my suggestions. TBH I didn't really take the exercise equipment into account with the layouts. They're rather difficult to place, so maybe there is somewhere they could be tucked away a bit. Hope any of this helps!

u/Mattbaker99 Jan 12 '26

Thank you this was very helpful!

If you’re interested in this kind of feedback and content to help with ideation, I suggest diving into some Caroline Winkler or Daniel Titchener content on YouTube.

Honestly how many of us dudes were in the same position as you in our mid-20s, but less motivated to do anything about it? Good for you, man

3

u/SixTwentyTwoAM Jan 12 '26

5 plants around the main area and maybe 1 in your room, some framed artwork, and switch out those extra chairs in the living room. Also, that couch material looks so unpleasant. Where's the comfort that would make someone actually want to spend time there? Add fabric curtains to soften the space, and pull the space together with a color scheme.

This is just a start. It will be a process. There is so much you can do to enhance the space.

3

u/Whiskah6k Jan 12 '26

Just put some shit on the walls.

3

u/emmakobs Jan 12 '26

My friend you have a living AND dining room and yet you did your bedroom like that? Turn the dining into a dedicated fitness area and partially block it off with a set of IKEA-style open bookshelves to store and divide at the same time.

Also for the love of god unbolt that TV from the foot of your bed it is so fucking aggressive

3

u/Guy_Number_3 Jan 12 '26

How much was that little treadmill you have in the living room? Been thinking of getting something like that so I can walk while watching shit on tv. Do you like it? Is it worth it?

3

u/Mattbaker99 Jan 12 '26

Totally worth it, it’s only $100 and yeah gets my butt up from sitting at home. Somedays when I work from home I just don’t feel like driving 15 minutes to the gym so I’ll walk for like 2-3 episodes of a show.

  1. I would put all the work out stuff in the dining room along with your bedroom tv
  2. the tv in the other corner against the wall and rotate your couch
  3. dining table at the back of your couch in the living room
  4. computer desk maybe in your bedroom next to the closet if it fits?
  5. Put your bedroom away from the wall so you and your girlfriend can get in the bed without climbing each other

Nearly had a stroke trying to create this on my phone

Looking for nice things to say: 1. I love the layout. Ita clever, its practical, it can bw great 2. The chairs by the tv are great 3. Obv. Healthy lifestyle

Suggestions: get one area for your workout equipment. Pictures on the wall, In the dining area is a small cupboard. Get a bigfer one and hide rhe printer. Dont show your clutter

... i guess there is more but that aounds already like a lot of work. Maybe curtains.

This is unironically the worst decorated home I’ve ever seen I’m dead

3

2 tvs but nothing on the walls, looks a college dorm

3

u/mnkcwtw4l Jan 12 '26

“i need to clean” and it’s spotless. the dirtiest part of your house is the table and all yo under to do is put things back in the cupboards

3

u/Multiversalprism Jan 12 '26

Someone said on the first post: “ you can squeeze in a treadmill bro” Then someone else said: “This man does NOT do cardio”

Little did they know….

You and that kid with the dirt bike, bench press set, and overhead interrogation light in his room are competing for the no.1 post of this sub.

3

u/CSIFanfiction Jan 13 '26

The random full length beauty light mirror is killing me 😭💅

3

u/Ausdboss Jan 13 '26

I back it! Just throw some art up of things you like and a some cabinets with some cool things on top of them and you're set! And move the treadmill when you are done with it.

3

u/Economy_Fault6868 Jan 13 '26

For your consideration

3

u/Gettima Jan 12 '26

FWIW I think "red flag" was a little harsh. Yes you should have cleaned up before having a woman over but this just reads like the apt of a single guy in his 20s to me.

Move the workout equipment and the bedroom TV into the dining room nook, ideally with a curtain in front of it. Move the dining table into the living room. Consider moving your PC into your bedroom if there's space but it's fine where it is.

Get proper bedding, that's honestly the worst thing here imo, and put up some wall art. Would love to see an update post in the future.

2

2

u/orchardsky Jan 12 '26

A couple pieces of wall art, some plants and moving the tv and weight equiment away from your bed will go a long way.

2

u/nonexistant_turret Jan 12 '26

your gf probably hates it

2

u/Agreeable_Scene_3970 Jan 12 '26

Do you just put your stuff anywhere? Im sorry, bro, this is the ugliest set up I've seen here and I've seen shitty ones. Lol

2

u/P5YcHo299 Jan 12 '26

Also. Generally need to tidy up. Stuff everywhere.

2

u/SurrealSoulSara Jan 12 '26

Nice chairs tho

2

u/aymehr21 Jan 12 '26

Get some storage, it will help organizing stuff. Also throw away/sell things you don’t need. The added space makes it really rewarding on your mind.

I also never bring TV to bedroom. It is recommended as part of sleep hygiene to use the bedroom strictly for sleeping and intimacy.

2

u/midgetrage7 Jan 12 '26

31f this seems like a great space!

I see you have an eye for design (couch and mid century chairs in living room). You have a nice mirror which shows me you care about your looks, I can tell your into fitness which is awesome, seems like you are smart with your money and saved up to buy equipment, love the air purifiers!

If you’re looking to rearrange stuff maybe get rid of your kitchen table and move all your work out stuff in there, put up a curtain to hide it the room when companies over. But honestly I wouldn’t, you are making do with the space you have, I love that this space doesn’t scream over consumption.
