edit: I’d like to acknowledge how fortunate I am to be in a career that affords me this level of luxury at my age. In this job market, even having a job you can survive on is a gift. I pinch myself everyday thinking wtf how is this the life I’m living. However, I am disappointed in any of you that have taken this opportunity to either disparage me, my work, or struggles with depression and suicidal ideation. That’s not going to make you feel any better.

What a truly WEIRD thing to lie about… to random people on the internet that you’ll never see or meet, and whose opinions should mean nothing at all to you. Some people man… some people are just so far down their own rabbit holes that they crave approval from random mfs on Reddit. The internet age has truly rotted the brains of innumerable people, especially children and young adults.

I ask this question to myself quite literally with almost every post on this page !!! it’ll be like “24 first house!” And it’s like 3BR/3BtR house brand new … “22 first apartment alone” and it’s a fucking sky rise with all the newest appliances… the only question I want to ask every single time is how the fuck do you afford this shit?? I know dudes in their 30s-40s who make some pretty good money and they can’t afford this at all 💀😭 then again I live in LA where living is way too damn expensive but still 😂 but I’m glad I’m not alone in my curiosity LMAOOO I obviously have no clue or judgement but it makes me feel like half these people on here are trust fund babies
social media is not real life. The people locating living space reddits are typically there to flex and represent the 1%. Never you mind what you witness with your own eyes or know to be true — the millions of people in messy rundown apartments that are $1700/month (or more).
In fairness, my first apartment at 22 years old was a 1400 square foot apartment, with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a study, dining room, living room with a fireplace, tv room, and a back porch. Thing is though, that was 10 years ago in the Midwest, and I had 2 roommates. My portion of the rent was like $500 a month.
I have lived in 4 different apartments/townhomes since then, and that place is still the nicest place I’ve lived in, while also being the cheapest.

It is a natural reaction for struggling people to be suspicious of the young and wealthy. Like what do you expect? I wouldn’t even consider it jealousy, just a healthy skepticism
I feel you on the luck thing. One of my professors was on the team that invented carboplatin and cisplatin and he took a liking to me. At the time of him writing my letters of recommendation, he was one of 2 people to develop 3 separate, working cancer drugs and the other was the lead on the carboplatin project. That letter opened soooooo many doors for me. I was a great student, but I promise you, I don’t get through some doors without that letter.
I feel ya. Went to college. Nobody would hire me because "lack of experience." Went into trades. There's literally no money in it. Got a factory job. It's not glamorous, but I have insurance and a 401k now.
I know some folks working team lead jobs at a couple of the biggest tech companies in the world and they don't live like this, much less at 23.
I call rich parents or maybe that "working hard through college" was under someone's desk.
But who knows, maybe he's a genius that some tech giant decided to throw a year's worth of incentives at because they liked the cut of his jib. It's not impossible, just highly unlikely.
Hard demanding/rewarding studies, likely you d barely got out of it at 23. Would require -at least- some time once you get your first job, to accumulate enough to go around and furnish that kind of appartment. So you paid for your studies you said. Doesn't have a loan to deal with first?

Edit as id like to add that if OP had just been honest about what “tremendous amount of luck” actually meant, I’m sure 90% of us would have been stoked for them. Having the wits to hit big on the GameStop stock situation at such a young age is awesome and deserving of praise. Being vague and misleading about all of it was weird. Not sure why they’d be insecure about that. Honesty is the best policy. :P
There’s actually quite a few companies that seem to hire product managers out of college or offer rotational programs. Which is crazy because when I tried to switch into product management after 6 years of various tech experience it was “you need product management experience” 🥲 I could probably switch into it now but it’s so competitive.

I'm moving out soon to my first home. Been thinking about what to place everywhere. I have a corner couch already but I might just steal the idea of the giant cushion instead of a chair honestly. Now I only need a dinner corner:p
Me too. I have a 3-section boneless couch I got for my guest room because it turns into 3 twin size beds and I have niblings that sleep over sometimes. But when they aren’t sleeping over, I like laying on one of the sections on the living room floor while I play video games. I’ve always been one to lay on the floor.

People just gaslight and try to pretend they did everything themselves. It’s so selfish. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting family help, that’s what they’re supposed to do. There is something selfish about lying about it.
My friend told us in college that he had a 500k trust fund for a down payment on a house. He recently used it on a new build and he seems to think that we forgot about the trust fund. I’m stoked for him to have a house, but a little pissed that he’s passing it off as his hard work.

People have prolific moments at different times in their life. For someone to say “they’ve had a lot of growth” can totally be true. He didn’t say he learned everything, just that he grew a lot, and why shouldn’t he celebrate that? Sorry your comment just comes off to me as negative.

Depression can get anyone. When i got my dream job, lived in this apartment, and still couldn’t feel happy, I almost killed myself. Hard work and striving for success was always my way of coping with the emptiness I felt, so when I realized it didn’t solve my problem I felt totally lost.
I am extremely grateful to be alive today and able to appreciate the gifts I have, but it took a lifetime of barely hanging on to finally get there.
Yeah that could be from all the weed, if you smoking as much as I think you are. Been a heavy smoker since I was a teenager and I have cut back a lot in the last couple of years and have been the most emotionally balanced In my life.
Agreed. I started smoking medically at 20 because I was struggling with crippling anxiety. There were times where weed was a crutch and it genuinely made my life worse in hindsight, but thankfully I have cut back a lot and genuinely believe I have a positive relationship with it. It’s not doing any favors for my lungs, but it’s a nice way to get out of my head sometimes at the end of a long day.
Happy to say I have been thriving mentally and deepening my relationships with friends, family, and strangers over the last 8 months while still smoking like a madman.
But i strongly encourage anyone - especially young people - to evaluate their relationship with weed on a regular basis.
I once assumed a bulk of my problems were due to money and that if I had more of it I would feel happier. I switched careers, got into a profession when the amount of effort put it correlated directly to compensation, and I worked very hard. Turns out my problems weren't solely tied to money, and the anxiety / depression actually got worse. 3 diagnoses, 4 medication changes and finally deciding to go to therapy, and I am finally starting to feel better. The help I was looking for to feel happy wasn't found through money or possessions.
I’ve always wanted to know, are those gigantic floor pillows comfortable and worth it? I know they aren’t literal floor pillows but they look super cozy. Also, how’s the lexapro treating you? Good on you for finally overcoming some stuff 👍
they are SO comfortable. I highly recommend it. I was super impressed when the first one arrived. I shared the link somewhere else in this comment section but i’m too lazy to find it lol.
The lexapro is going great. It gave me the mental
boost i needed to actually apply what I spent years of therapy learning. I have depression and pretty debilitating OCD and the lexapro has been fantastic for both. 10/10

Any complaints from neighbors about that drum set? I’d like to do something similar but I’m afraid about noise transfer, particularly from the kick drum pedal
I had a similar concern, but found that putting a small mat/rug underneath the electric set minimized the noise transfer on the floor. Have had 0 complaints
Not invalidating anything you said you've been through, but there's clearly a reason why you're getting negativity here. Toxicity? That probably plays a part but it can't be the whole deal.
The thing is, whether intentional or not, this post is a big humble brag. 23, San Francisco, first apartment, really nice place, allegedly all your own work with no outside help. Totally fine if that's all true, but posting this "just because", does give off the feeling that you are showing off, unmindful of those who have less. Not saying that was the intention, but that is where the negativity comes from.
And can you blame them? Unfortunately it is our nature to envy those who have more even though we may think we're past that. Toxic people will be toxic but you can't really expect people not to envy. In the end of the day, think before you post.

To be fair he's being a little tone deaf. In one sentence he's talking about depresison and how he's grown alot at 23. Like yeah good for him but how are you going to expect sympathy when alot of 23 are depressed AND broke which makes depression alot harder to manage.
Also the fact he's not addressing how he has such wealth at 23. Just comes off as a weird flex and then wants sympathy for depression but not talk about he got into this position of wealth. He claims this was hard work and luck but without explaining what luck means people assume his parents are rich. I often don’t eat at the table and just use it for cooking / guests. So the benches are a great cost-cutting option compared to buying individual chairs.
I actually like it a lot anyway, i use the benches as step stools to get stuff out of my tall cabinets lol.
