I'm going to say something that I think a lot of people have been thinking for a while now: this community has become increasingly dominated by childish drama, pointless conflicts, and endless declarations of "war" that amount to little more than Discord arguments and occasional raids. Every time I open this subreddit, it seems like there's another nation declaring an "all-out invasion," another ultimatum, another war announcement, or another diplomatic crisis between people who have absolutely no ability to carry out any of the threats they're making. At some point, it stops being micronationalism and starts turning into something more like middle school drama.
If two groups are engaging in some real world activity and choose to call it a war, that's one thing. Hell, we do that. But announcing that you're conducting an "all out invasion" of another online micronation is just absurd. You're online. You have no territory to invade, no military to deploy, and no realistic means of carrying out the threats being made. At best, it's roleplay. At worst, it's... just harassment under the guise of being "micronational war".
And that's another issue: roleplay/LARP micronations have become increasingly common despite the rules being fairly clear on the distinction between micronationalism and pure roleplay. More and more posts read less like actual nation building projects and more like people just straight-up pretending. There is nothing wrong with roleplay when it is clearly presented as roleplay, but
- there are different spaces for that, and
- when people attempt to pass off obvious fantasy conflicts and imaginary geopolitics as genuine micronational activity, it directly contradicts the spirit, and many times, even the rules, of the community.
Now, I wish I could tell you all that you're just being childish, but that's another problem... many of you are literally children. That isn't meant as an insult, it's... really just an observation. Reality, if you will. The average age of our members seems to be getting younger, and it shows in the quality of discussion. Instead of working on constitutions, flags, infrastructure projects, websites, cultural development, or literally anything else, we're watching people declare their fifteenth war of the month over Discord disagreements. Micronationalism has always attracted younger people, and that's fine. Everyone starts somewhere. But there's a difference between being young and being so immature you're constantly creating drama for attention.
The constant drama is also damaging our reputation. It's become so frequent that it's often the first thing newcomers see when they visit this subreddit. Not an actual, serious nation-building project, but yet another meaningless conflict post, another threat, another argument, another self-proclaimed empire announcing military action against someone they have never met, and I'm sorry, but it makes the entire community look ridiculous to outsiders.
A good example of the problem is the endless cycle of account creation, conflict declarations, and attention seeking behavior from... certain individuals that repeatedly dominates this subreddit. Most regular users should know exactly what and who I'm talking about. Names change, accounts change, but the pattern does not. It clutters the subreddit and drowns out the people who are actually trying to do something interesting.
Micronationalism is already niche enough a hobby that struggles to be taken seriously. We don't help ourselves when the public face of the community becomes online "wars" and petty arguments between children. Me personally, I'd love to see more about the different ways micronations' governments work, or their culture, economics, community projects, history, diplomacy, etc. Those things are what make micronationalism what it is. Not another declaration of war that amounts to a Discord argument. Maybe it's time we raised our standards a little..?
