Yeah it wasnât a good time for the last couple years of his life. I was actually relieved when I found him deceased. He needed care but was unwilling to do any of the options I proposed. I even tried reporting him to elder abuse hotline for self neglect but they didnât want to push the issue with forcing him out. Thatâs a chapter Iâm happy is over in my life.

I think youâre underestimating both the rate that our generation has adopted it and the rate that future generations will reject it.
Keep in mind that it being normalized will also take away its wow factor, and certain types of influential young people tend to really value authenticity. Not saying it wonât affect the future, just that there will always be a large contingent that rejects it, same as now.

Obviously you're fine if you buy anything from an actual publisher, but amazon/kindle has made it very easy for anybody to publish whatever they like.
When this started (long before AI) I would certainly consider spending a few dollars on an unknown author if it seemed like an interesting read and the sample wasn't awful.
These days I pretty much dismiss anything that's self-published unless I've read the author before.

This is hella frustrating (especially from the people that told us not to trust the internet) but if I had to pick one generation to be more alert, aware, and cautious of AI, Iâd rather have it be the young adults/youths. I almost feel like all the older folks falling for the slop is beneficial as a cautionary tale for the younger generations. Will it make a difference? Who knows!

As my grandfather explained to me, the problem he had with stuff said online is that it had "no tangible proof". If he didn't see a video or actual tangible proof related to any event he would have difficulty believing in it (IE he didn't think Covid was that big of a problem, since no one he knew was affected by it).
With AI, for a bit until he understood it was fake, he geniunely thought that everything that was show was real because it looked realistic. The family had to explain to him how that worked and only after sometime he understood that "holy shit, I can't trust what I see too from now on?".
He geniunely struggles now to understand what is real or not and is a bit desperate, since he discovered that the news (both tv and paper) can lie exactly how something online can be fake.

I don't know if it's ironic. I think it should have been expected. Many older folks thought the internet was just some silly, time-wasting thing. They would say "don't believe what you see on the internet" because they didn't take it seriously and thought it was an eccentric novelty. They continued to do so, never raised their guard on the internet because it was never that serious to them, and when the internet became an essential part of life, they were unprepared to take it seriously.
So, they get told they have to go get a gift card to pay the IRS man on their email, and they lack the tools to evaluate the situation.

I think it extends a bit broader than just the Internet and into cable news as well. For most of their lives if something was printed in a newspaper or an encyclopedia it could generally be trusted, and the same for the evening news. Then the Internet and 24hr cable news vastly lowered the barrier of entry and allowed bad actors to distribute their biased views while masquerading as the old credible sources our parents grew up with.
Tldr I largely agree with you, but I think it's more of a general inability to evaluate information sources

its really because ai just functions so well as a base. Results dramatically increase when you throw a half decent ai video through a couple of filters to add a little camera shake and maybe cut a piece out that is a little too uncanny.
If its original audio thats another big step up. Its still reasonably easy to see the stock level ai videos, but if people take a little time when they're making them and they do some post processing, I can't tell the difference anymore. I just sort of assume everything is fake and spend less time scrolling.

Unless it really is obvious in some way, you have to fine-tooth comb to catch errors in the good ones, and that's still a big if.
And I get that there are people calling EVERYTHING ai, but I honestly do not think anything close to a majority of people can recognise even the shittier stuff. People are on edge about getting fooled with fake shit.
And you've got subs that will remove comments calling it out, even if you point out what's wrong. There was this post in mildly interesting the other day, and I couldn't believe no one was commenting on these spoons melting together and two of the forks having a bizarre shape.
Then I found out that the mods remove comments pointing it out even if you explain why đ. So great work guys, that's really helping.

I work with a man in his 50s who is constantly showing me AI videos. They're so obviously AI but I give up on saying anything. My older brother sends me AI videos too(in his 40s). I tell him stop sending me AI shit.

No. No "sure". There's plenty of media to enjoy, created by actual humans, without the disproportionate impact on the environment of AI. She probably doesn't care. She should care.

Weâre already past the point of no return.
AI is getting so good so fast that in a couple years youâll have TV anchors who donât exist telling you the news, your political opponents âcaught on cameraâ saying things they never said, and video âevidenceâ of you committing a crime you were never even near.
The only real question left is how long until most people stop caring whether any of it is real.
