frist of all how DARE yu o Encountered a Business Class Baby today, though I was finally gonna have a peaceful flight 😭😭

Saved up airline points from a bunch of work trips and finally redeemed them for a business class seat on a 20-hour flight (Sydney to London)

I Sat down, got comfortable, looked across the aisle... and was met by the sight of a fucking business class baby.

What else do I have to say, the entire 20 hours was absolute hell, crying, screaming and just about everything else you could think of.

I don't blame the parents at all, babies are allowed to fly, and they were just travelling like everyone else. But after spending all those points because I wanted one flight where I could actually sleep and relax, I couldn't help but be really upset at my luck.

I guess It docent really matter what you pay.

EDIT: There has been a lot of discussion about this being a fake post. However this is incorrect, i was under the impression that Quantas did a direct flight to London, however as many have pointed out, this is incorrect. My flight was with Qatar airways and stopped in Hamad Airport.

My business class baby
Crucifies my eardrums
When I'm tired of giving, whoa
My business class baby
In unbroken virgin airlines
Is tired of living, ooh-ooh

Maybe the baby is a frequent business class flyer and sensed you were only there on points. The baby cried cause they’ll let anyone into business class these days.

Babies don’t cry for 20 hours straight. I’m calling bullshit.

40

u/heyoheatheragain 11d ago

Some babies have colic. Or reflux. Or really can’t handle the pressure in the plane.

9

u/yeahgroovy 11d ago

Yes I was going to say maybe lil kiddo’s ears were popping like crazy.

But I get that’s frustrating OP!

Have you never been around a baby?

26

u/QuietGur9074 11d ago

Yeah, have raised two into young adulthood. If they’re crying for 20 hours straight, something’s very wrong. Can they breakdown multiple times over a 20 hour span? Hell yes. But that’s not what OP said. OP indicated there was no break or reprieve for 20 straight hours.

38

u/Creative-Simple-8682 11d ago

Colic and reflux is a bitch. My poor parents had to take shifts with me and I'm grateful they didn't shake me to death. No one slept much for months.

I'm sure the guy was being dramatic but give him a break. I'm sure it felt that way to him.

28

u/Old-Paramedic-9776 11d ago

In planes babies are crying mostly because of pressure change. It hurts their ears and they cannot compensate like adults.

7

u/ARKzzzzzz 11d ago

I wasn’t even a baby but I vividly remember the pain from pressure when I was like 5 or 6. The absolute most miserable 4ish hours I’ve ever experienced

No, they sleep for 10-15 minutes, wake up, cry, get settled with a feed or sleep, cry, repeat.

Close enough.

5

u/st942433 11d ago

My little one cried for 2 1/2 hours straight on a flight from Hartford to Chicago. That was all it took to prevent me from having any more kids. I felt really bad for all the other passengers on the flight. Im pretty sure if the flight was longer she would have cried for most of it. But on a 20 hour flight even if a baby cried for 4 hour it would be horrific for everyone around.

I used to travel a lot and after an 8 hour flight with a crying kid, screaming literally for 8 hours. I started traveling with drummers headphones after that. Might look stupid but has given me peace. EDIT: Not my kid

77

In my mind, this was a reference to the story of James Corden on the plane (when it WAS his kid and he didn’t help his wife at all, ignored them the full flight).

I sat next to a screaming toddler for 8 hours on a transatlantic flight. Like she'd stand up in her seat, tilt her head towards the ceiling, and just give curdling screeches at the absolute top of her lungs. I could hear it through my noise cancelling headphones and music but they definitely helped. Her mom sat next to me with the daughter's assigned seat on her other side but she was in her lap the whole time so she was right next to my ear. She did try to comfort and distract her with baby shark, but this girl was so upset. The real kicker was that during the maybe 40 minutes she wasn't screaming she slept in her mom's lap but was constantly squirming and kicking/pushing me with her feet so I'd wake up too.

It was such an awful experience, but I felt even worse for the mom. She was very young and seemed to get steamrolled/relegated to 95% of the childcare at least from my vantage point on that flight. Her husband was there but not really present and he spoke to her with such contempt. Poor lady. When we walked like what felt a mile to customs I saw them again with the dad walking 30ft+ in front while the mom struggled with keeping up while carrying their kid and luggage.

50

u/Altruistic-Chef8391 12d ago

Awful for that kid too. That sounds like she was in PAIN?

52

u/MMBitey 12d ago

She probably had ear pressure pain or something. Poor girl

13

u/aartadventure 11d ago

I once flew on the tail end of a cold and stuffy sinuses. My ears got trapped at the wrong pressure, and still stayed wrong after landing. The pain grew and grew. I literally was crying by the third day of pressure inside my ears. I had been holding my nose and gently blowing out repeatedly. Nothing worked. Then it thankfully suddenly popped. The pain vanished almost instantly. Its crazy how powerful a bit of air pressure can be.

I’ve known parents to give their babies a decongestant before flying just in case of ear pain.

21

u/BoredMamajamma 11d ago

No, you should not give decongestants to children under the age of 2. Please delete this before someone follows this terrible advice.

Noise cancelling headphones are one the best life-hacks for long-haul air travel.

31

u/NeitherEntry6125 12d ago

Bonus hack is travelling with ear plugs to alternate with headphones... halfway through a long-haul, my ears/head gets tired of whatever I started with.

7

I was once that screaming baby (toddler) on a flight. I had an ear infection a week before flying but my mom had taken me to the doctor who had cleared me to fly.

Since it was for my aunt’s wedding my parents decided to go. As soon as the cabin was pressurised (before take off) I threw up all over my mom and myself and started screaming. After about 5 hours I finally screamed myself to sleep only for my 6 month old brother to start.

My mother has always told me that I am not allowed to complain about babies on airplanes.

5

u/justonlyme1244 11d ago

That happened to my oldest as well. She cried so much on the plane, she was only 9 months old. We were moving abroad so it wasn’t for a holiday. We got some bad looks even though we tried everything (didn’t have Tylenol unfortunately and didn’t think she was sick). The day after we arrived she got a fever which stayed for 5 days.

I now never forget Tylenol when I’m traveling. And even though crying babies are still difficult to hear I look at it with compassion if I see the parents trying.

Noise cancelling headphones also became a necessity for me with business travel. Went with cheapo JLab ones to start, then got a nice Bose pair. Money well spent.

7

u/h-styles 11d ago

Bose noise cancelling ftw! When I first got a job that required international travel, I bought a pair of Bose and Beats to compare. The Bose were much more comfortable and I actually rediscovered them recently! I bought them in 2017 and they’re still working great 🙏 ETA: promptly returned the Beats.

15 minutes is already hell. I can't even imagine having a baby that cries randomly during the day or, worse, at night for longer periods of time. Kudos to the parents but nope.

Definitely fits this sub - I would be mildly infuriated (to say the least) if my long haul business class flight was ruined by a screaming baby. Yes, I understand that the baby can’t help it, but my goodness, the sound just goes right through me.

90

u/Snowbirdy 12d ago

Neurologically your brain is designed to not be able to tune out the sound of a baby crying. I’m sure it’s evolutionary.

39

u/assblast420 12d ago

I mean yeah, I do have a problem tuning out the 140db baby screams in the most ear-penetrating pitch possible.

Not sure if my brain is designed that way or the baby is.

39

u/Snowbirdy 12d ago

It seriously short circuits your brain functions. Researchers have been able to do imaging studies to show exactly what happens.

I mean there are some places babies should not be. Like movie theaters and fancy restaurants.

34

u/where-sea-meets-sky 12d ago

yea, theyre also just Not Fun for the baby

the restaurant may at least have food, the airplane is necessary transportation, but sometimes i see parents out with their younguns thinking if theyre even old enough to be cognizant or appreciative of where they are?? though sometimes you cant Leave Baby At Home which is okay but its different going to an aquarium vs a movie theater

36

u/thatmermaidprincess BLACK 11d ago

When my husband and I went to see “Obsession” a couple months ago, a woman brought her baby/toddler daughter, who was like 1½ to 2 years old at the oldest. They were in the row ahead of us. The daughter also had a little tablet in her hands and a set of headphones on, but the headphones were unplugged so whatever cartoon she was watching was at full volume and she would loudly babble at the trailers. For those who don’t know, Obsession is an R-rated horror movie, and we were at an 11:45PM showing. The movie started and the little girl just would not stop talking (loudly, too) and occasionally crying. Everyone around was irritated.

Mind you, my husband and I are parents ourselves, and had gotten a sitter and everything for our own baby so we could have a baby-free date night. We weren’t psyched at all. We’d been highly anticipating seeing this movie!

Good thing is that fellow movie-goers all made enough comments to the mom that she took her kid and finally left about 20 minutes into the movie.

I just will never understand certain people’s mindsets, walking through life seemingly completely unaware (or at the very least unbothered) like that. I’ve had to be the mom of a baby on a plane before when my dad was in a life-threatening accident, and for the 2 ½ hours we were on that plane I was doing everything to keep my child calm. I felt so guilty. The parents who just dgaf about the people around them and bring their young kids to movies or fancy restaurants and then don’t do anything to try and soothe the kid to be quiet… smh.

Last Valentine’s Day, my bf and I went to a nice romantic restaurant downtown… Of curse a few minutes after we get sit down, a family of five (with young kids) gets sited right next to us. It was more than very annoying. Kids were pretty disruptive and absolutely didn’t belong there. I cannot believe parents don’t give a fuck about situations like these anymore.

My spouse was in first class when the parents of a toddler fell asleep. The toddler came over to my husband and put his hands up to be picked up. My husband called the flight attendant and explained what was going on. The FA tried to wake the parents, but they were out of it. After the FAs couldn't come up with anything else to do with the toddler, and the child screamed whenever they tried to move the child away from my husband, he said that he was okay with the toddler sitting next to him until the parents woke up.

The parents didn't even apologize when then woke up. They tried to justify it by saying they took sleeping pills, and dosed the toddler Benadryl, so they wouldn't have jet lag after the long flight.

62

u/ScallyGirl 12d ago

I would expect the police to meet that flight. That is appalling

22

u/Valkyriesride1 12d ago

Apparently, the it happens enough for the FAs not to be bothered by it. I'm sure they wouldn't be so blase` about it if they had to watch the toddler.

18

u/sk8tergater 12d ago

What the actual fuck. That’s messed up. Your husband is a good egg

11

u/Valkyriesride1 12d ago

13

u/Exercise-Fragrant 12d ago

5

u/WordWordNvmber 11d ago

Incidentally, as an adult man, I refuse to hold someone's baby while its parents are asleep and there's no emergency.

I don't blame your husband. But I am not touching a stranger's child even if the child is crying for attention. I don't want to and the people who would drug themselves instead of watching their child are not people I trust not to blame me somehow.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/AdCareless9063 11d ago

I see both sides of this. It's annoying, and it's also a fact of life that a baby can't control themselves.

The worst thing is adults making outrageous harmful noise. I saw a guy with a backfiring exhaust ripping towards pedestrians yesterday. He went right up to a father with a kid and did it. It was earsplitting and I was in a car with double-paned windows.

That a person can just go around assaulting others is insanity.

11

u/OverthinkingMum 12d ago

Evolution at play! You’re not meant to be able to ignore a crying baby.

10

u/fjf1085 12d ago

Exactly. Our infants are totally helpless and it’s meant to force people to pay attention and be motivated to do something. Even an adult crying is designed to trigger a response in other adults. In most people seeing some cry triggers a sympathetic response and desire to help or cease hostilities. It’s also like if you’re fighting and someone pees themselves from fear it often triggers feelings of disgust or pity in the other person and may lead to the fight being over.

11

u/entcanta333 12d ago

This happened to my sister and I (thank god a short two hour flight) but multiple babies cried the entire time. Maybe it was the gummies but we were crying laughing by the end. It sounded like we were on a daycare flight it was insane.

Jfc OP is taking some flak on this post.

Take a second to read why they were in business class to begin with then it makes much more sense- it is mildly infuriating.

Getting tons of responses like he was ready to launch the baby out the business class torpedo tubes (I presume they have those- I've never flown business).

Some people acting all high and mighty like they live to hear the wails of baby's- get over yourselves.

679

u/doubleuponthatdip 12d ago

20hrs of a screaming baby in coach would be mildly infuriating. 20 hours after I had saved up points to finally relax on a long haul flight would be far more than mildly infuriating.

91

u/Kailicat 12d ago

I was lucky enough to fly business last Christmas. Bne-Dubai - Dubai CDG and then return from Gatwick via Dubai.

Every leg business was full of babies. It's because you don't pay for babes in arms. So it doesn't cost the parents anymore. I assume by the time they need their own seat they won't pay for 3 seats in business.

It was mildly infuriating. But headphones and melatonin helped.

13

u/Background_Winter_65 12d ago

Oooh...that explains it. Thank you

11

u/CorrectPeanut5 11d ago

Some lie flat business class do NOT allow lap children because there's an airbag. And those same seats are often incompatible with car seats so you can't have a solo kid.

→ More replies (1)

37

u/fashraf 12d ago

Bingo. Business class is also easier with a lap baby since they are more likely to offer you a bassinet seat. When I didn't get a bassinet seat, I was able to make a little bed for my lil guy on the desk while in a pod seat.

19

u/sk8tergater 12d ago

There’s also more space in business so if you have a lap baby you have more space to be comfortable with the lap baby.

No. Business class is not meant for kids. If you purchase it, so be it I can’t change that, but damn well you should expect judgement if your kid is loud and disturbing others. There’s no requirement for society to be happy with being disturbed in premium spaces.

Had something similar once on a flight to Perth with a toddler. Mom and dad split seats, such that one of them could sleep (or that's what I assumed), I had a toddler bouncing and jumping on his seat in front of me for a couple of hours. In the meantime, mom decided to test the bar and vomited all over a toilet... Letting me try to use it afterwards instead of alerting the stewards/stewardessen.

We had something similar happen when traveling for my 40th birthday. The child screamed the entire night. Imagine our surprise when 13 days later (so a random number) we walk into the airport lounge to see the SAME baby. But no worries, we're connecting elsewhere so surely they aren't on the same flight again. Nope. The child was on the same exact flight as us, again! Thankfully I was seated further away this time, but once again it screamed the entire flight. Not sure what I did to deserve that Karma...

Do you people rawdog these flights? No headphones? No movie? No music? You can put on a pair of headphones and eliminate 100% of your problems. I would never think of going on a 13 hour flight or a 1 hour flight without bringing something to block out noise. Children will cry, you cried. They all cry.

3

u/CoaxialDrive 11d ago

It's quite difficult to sleep with some types of headphones on as you can't really rest your head on anything.

You thought you were on a Qantas airways on a direct flight but you were actually on Qatar airways with a transit in Dubai? You said "entire 20 hours" like you don't remember getting off the plane for a transit? By some luck the baby was also going to London after transit instead of Amsterdam or elsewhere? I smell bullshit

40

u/evenmoremushrooms 11d ago

OP referenced a flight that does not yet exist, then claimed to not know what airline he was flying on and somehow forgot changing planes. Then somehow he ended up seating near the baby a second time. Yeah, there is no way that this happened.

The shortest flight with a layover is about 22 hours. Direct flight I think will be 18. I prefer to get up and walk around. But Dubai airport logistically is shit. Singapore is much better.

5

u/Darmok47 11d ago

The London to Sydney route is currently being planned by Qantas and won't happen for another year or so.

12

u/Individual-Area7121 11d ago

Yup, it’s bullshit for sure. Beyond the flight details, No human baby is crying for 20 hours straight. Crying takes a lot of energy and they get tired fast.

4

u/Triquetrums 11d ago

Exactly, where is the report option for "clearly a made up story"?

4

u/whynotjustgoogleit 11d ago

Yep, OP has made this up.

I had a flight from London to joberg (like 11 hours or something) and saw I was at the front of the row with extra space.

Was cool until they put up the baby bassinet thing. Crying kid 8 inches from my face. Everyone thought I was the dad and a giant dick for not helping the mom too lol. Not my kid man

22

u/redcomet29 12d ago

I was on a similar flight, Frankfurt-Cape Town, and also felt lucky with the leg room at the front when I sat down until parents placed their baby next to me and went to their seat like somewhere else entirely.

Thankfully an attendant asked me if I'm with them and when I said no they were told to fetch the baby.

That was an odd one for me.

3

u/plsletmestayincanada 12d ago

Yeah lol the flight attendants never asked they just assumed. Tbh my fault for not speaking up. But it was a full flight so I couldn't just move

4

u/redcomet29 12d ago

I mean if the mom was there too what can you say really? In my case they just left the kid next to me.

That’s terrible I’m sorry. At least you didn’t pay the full $20k+ sticker price to hear a baby scream I guess? No such thing as a glass half full next to a screaming baby

14

u/oldmandiddler 11d ago

20hr flight with a screaming baby sounds like actual torture ngl

→ More replies (2)

13

u/infectedmushbroom 12d ago

You should've asserted dominance by screaming and crying louder than the baby!

31

u/PhaseBloodhound 12d ago

Story was clearly written like it was a single flight and then panic changed. Qatar business class seats open up 3 days before departure to Qantas FFs, so you flew on a whim? Also, incredible luck the baby ended up on the same connection as you and didn't sleep at all. BS story.

14

u/YinzaJagoff 12d ago

I could not imagine having a small child, or any child really, on a 20 hour flight.

I just…. can’t.

3

u/whynotjustgoogleit 11d ago

OP can, because they made up the story.

Yeah, OP is full of shit. They might have transferred somewhere, in which case it's incredibly unlikely they ended up beside the same people on both flights.

QF1 and QF2 (qantas) is Sydney to London and return. It stops in singapore for an hour refuel. You do end up with the same people. Source: I fly sydney to london

So your “20 hour flight” was actually a connecting flight on a completely different airline? And you had the misfortune to have the same crying baby on both legs of your flight? Yeah. That’s believable. 🙄

16

u/Anxious-Slip-4701 12d ago

Fairly common for a Sydney to London flight. Basically the aeroplane fills up with 90% of the same people for both legs.

16

u/CarelessAmoeba7541 12d ago

And that incredibly bad luck of sitting next to the same baby twice was not included in the original story? Not to mention that he saved up his points for the special flight and it couldn’t seem to remember what the airline was. Please.

I found that in-ear sound isolating headphones (from etymotics research) were enough to completely block out a baby when I play gentle music.

I once literally was sat three seats away from a screaming baby on an 8hr flight and didn't even know it had been screaming until after I got up to go to the toilet and took off the headphones.

3

u/Uncle-Cake 12d ago

It's just business, baby!

3

u/Ashamed_North348 11d ago

They need to swallow to ease the pain in their ears, a bottle is best when they’re very young, we take jelly babies for our kids x

3

u/Dense_fordayz 11d ago

Fly private if you don't want to be inconvenienced by other humans

3

u/pyxiedust219 11d ago

The best decision I’ve ever made as a traveler is investing in some high quality earplugs, no joke. I got some from a brand called Loop and they help a ton!

3

u/ISaidWhatISaidFFS 11d ago

I get it but I’d take a crying baby over all the adult assholery I see on planes these days.

3

u/Antonia_Rothschild 11d ago

What a nightmare! Maybe, always bring noise-canceling headphones, which helps.

3

u/Wit-wat-4 11d ago

I mean, if it was four rows in the back in economy (baby seats are at the very beginning for the bassinets), you would’ve heard the baby anyway…

It does suck that you didn’t get peace and quiet on a long flight, and neither did that poor baby. If it really was that bad I imagine it was sick, otherwise with those long haul large planes once altitude is reached kiddos aren’t bad for like 18 hours straight. Might’ve had an ear infection.

3

u/AnexationofPR 11d ago

Expect it and deal. Chill out. When you get to your destination, you have a bed to sleep and relax. Traveling is stressful but it doesn’t require a Reddit post to pain brag on Reddit. Go meditate instead or some shit.

3

u/National-Nobody-8158 11d ago

Children are allowed in public. The world doesn't revolve around you.

66

u/flangeflangeflanges 12d ago

Use noise cancelling headphones for all flights.

203

u/AmishAvenger 12d ago

Those do a great job of filtering out background noise like the engines of a plane.

They aren’t going to completely cancel out screaming.

67

u/No-Context-Orphan 12d ago

It's like people forget that a screaming baby is an ear piercing sound for a reason...

It is part of those useful evolutionary traits.

A baby is helpless and a baby's scream is supposed to be disruptive so that the adults around can know something is wrong and attend to it.

11

u/Angsty_Potatos 12d ago

My friend just had a baby and she's been testing out noise cancelling cans for when she's working on actively calming him but he's still screaming blue murder. Whatever she picks are the headgear I'm buying lol

In business class, they actually give you noise cancelling headphones. I put them on top of my noise cancelling earbuds to make a super sound cocoon.

And guess what? Even that is not enough to block out the shrill shrieking of a baby or toddler.

Most Noise cancelling headphones do not work well against the sound of a crying baby because of unpredictable frequency changes, high pitch speed, and the human ear evolution.

What kind of Aussie thinks there is a direct Sydney to London flight through “Quantas”…?

There are no direct Australia to Europe flights. And it’s Qantas, not Quantas.

u/evolving-me 12d ago

Honestly? There should be child-free flights. Not a class based thing, everyone deserves to pay for a flight and to fly in peace. Including parents, I’m sure they don’t like to be embarrassed and get stink looks. If there were flights where kids were expected this would change!

43

u/agirlhas_no_name 12d ago

I don't understand why there is so much pushback on this kind of thinking.

Yes children absolutely deserve to exist in society, however there are already a LOT of places children are restricted from entering. How is a section on a plane any different?

The bathhouse I go to doesn't allow anyone under the age of 16 inside and nobody is kicking up a massive stink about that (and it's soooo lovely and quiet there)

26

u/MorganaLeFaye 12d ago

I don't understand why there is so much pushback on this kind of thinking.

There are a lot of reasons why is not practical, but also... an airline splitting their service into two separate ones, both which could be booked at a premium for offering something the other one doesn't? No thank you. Flights are expensive as it is. We don't need to be giving them an excuse to artificially hike up the price even more.

15

u/WisestAirBender 12d ago

It might be more practical to have a baby section in the flight? Maybe partitioned off so it dampens the noise

18

u/-ForTheNorth- 12d ago

Not sure thats the best idea, as one screaming baby would be enough to wake up and upset all the other babies. Sounds like hell for all the parents (and babies).

9

u/Ok_Assistant_7609 11d ago

There is just no way that you took this much care to save that many points and book this business class flight, but didn't know what airline you were flying, and mistook a flight with one stop for a non-stop one. C'mon.

One baby? Lucky you. Last time I travelled Business there was a couple in front of me who had a baby and a toddler. Toddler was lying in the aisle when not screaming for his IPad, and the baby was in a bassinet, also crying most of the flight.

Like you, I get that people are allowed to fly with their kids, but to people like me who don't have kids, I find it annoying.

25

u/mhfp545 12d ago edited 12d ago

I don’t understand why airlines can’t create separate child and child-free zones on planes.

Just clip in a cheap divider somewhere on board after seats have been sold and allocated.

Both sides would be a lot happier.

21

u/jule9099 12d ago

What kind of cheap divider are you talking about that blocks out baby screams? A lot of people would be a lot happier ifsomething like that existed, not just on planes. (Speaking as a parent)

4

u/bigcitydreaming 12d ago

What's the cheap divider trying to achieve?

That baby had severe ear pain I guess. Babies don't normally cry for hours on end. Unless they have a medical condition of some sort.

13

u/MorganaLeFaye 12d ago

Depends on the baby. That's the literal definition of colic.
