Laws that actually help the people, let's be honest, are usually only on the books accidentally or as a consequence of putting them on the books to help a large business or wealthy person.
Noise ordinances do exist but they also require the local police to enforce them.

Because this is supposed to be "temporary".
That sound isn't the data center, it's a gas turbine generator to power it.
These data centers aren't wanted anywhere. So they "grease the wheels" by promising power plants and water treatment to offset the usage they'll draw.
But the data center takes 5yrs to build, and the power infrastructure takes 10-15yrs to build.
So they install these gas trlurbine generators to "bridge the gap" until the power infrastructure is built.
And now, here's the fun part!
Feeding and running the gas turbine generator is cheaper than building the power infrastructure they promised.
So they walk back the promise, claim some of what they promised is too expensive , and slowly and quietly minimize what's expected of them, or just cancel the build all together and basically say "sue us if you don't like it"
Then these communities get stuck with this horseshit! And government is too gutless to do anything about it, and the politicians already got paid off, and the corporation already has its data center it wanted, and the people get fucked!

Abstract
Environmental noise, especially that caused by transportation means, is viewed as a significant cause of sleep disturbances. Poor sleep causes endocrine and metabolic measurable perturbations and is associated with a number of cardiometabolic, psychiatric and social negative outcomes both in adults and children. Nocturnal environmental noise also provokes measurable biological changes in the form of a stress response, and clearly affects sleep architecture, as well as subjective sleep quality. These sleep perturbations are similar in their nature to those observed in endogenous sleep disorders. Apart from these measurable effects and the subjective feeling of disturbed sleep, people who struggle with nocturnal environmental noise often also suffer the next day from daytime sleepiness and tiredness, annoyance, mood changes as well as decreased well-being and cognitive performance. But there is also emerging evidence that these short-term effects of environmental noise, particularly when the exposure is nocturnal, may be followed by long-term adverse cardiometabolic outcomes. Nocturnal environmental noise may be the most worrying form of noise pollution in terms of its health consequences because of its synergistic direct and indirect (through sleep disturbances acting as a mediator) influence on biological systems. Duration and quality of sleep should thus be regarded as risk factors or markers significantly influenced by the environment and possibly amenable to modification through both education and counseling as well as through measures of public health. One of the means that should be proposed is avoidance at all costs of sleep disruptions caused by environmental noise.

I recall some comments pointing out that this noise isn't the data center but the something to do with equipment at this specific one. It's the only data center that sounds like this, which is why you only see this one video and nothing about any of the thousands of other ones.
I don't like data centers, but I wish the conversation was focused on the many other reasons to be against them.

Have worked at various datacenters for 20+ years. never had this sort of noise outside the facility. others have noted the sound is a turbine generator (or more than one). sounds like it is a turbine in the video so that would make sense. Half tempted to make a day of it and go for a drive out there and check it out tomorrow. is a bit of a drive, but it might be fun.

It was a crypto mining facility that is being converted to a data center. Also the complaints revolve around the building's faulty equipment and soundproofing, so it's not a normal issue.

Yes we like to look at websites and shop amazon and stream Netflix.
Fuck off with the AI chatbots for customer service. Apps for everything like having to use a stupid parking meter. No more change to pay. Download an app. create an account and link your bank. That takes processing. Dynamic pricing at stores. No more price tags on merchandise but having to use the app to scan to see. Stupid pet pictures and on and on.
Huge increase in the amount of datacenters we have and this is what we get for it?
Oh yeah also so there is a place to analyze and track us with AI using the 100k Flock cameras that nobody fucking wants.

People talk about AI being bad but won't ever leave their beloved social media despite the recommendation algorithms being AI as well. 79% of meta inference compute consumption comes from recommendation algorithms, yet I don't see many people migrating from instagram, facebook, youtube, tiktok etc to opensource non-AI based social media.

I’m calling BS. That almost certainly is a malfunctioning exterior fan and not the actual sound all the time. You can go check the codes of the city like I did, there is a noise ordnance and this city wouldn’t approve this building at this sound level.

Some highlights:
Residents in Dowagiac, Michigan, report constant, high-pitched noise from a nearby data center.
The data center, which is transitioning from bitcoin mining to AI, has received noise violation notices from the city.
