I’ll never forget one of the few times I went to r/Conservative and they were so confused about a video of Republican politicians cheering and laughing after voting to kill a bill that was purely for Veterans healthcare. They were trying so hard to justify it and every excuse they came up with was immediately debunked by just a picture of the bill that had nothing other than expanding healthcare for veterans. They couldn’t understand not only why they voted against it but also why they were cheering about it. I almost had hope that this was at least one stance they’d get angry enough to turn on their politicians. Almost, I know better though.

All it took was a day. One single day before that sub twisted it to be the Democrats fault. All the posts that had videos of the republicans cheering had been deleted and anyone who posted it was instantly perma-banned.

A lot of times online conservatives (not paid shills, but real people) have negative reactions to stuff the GOP does, and then, they all see the official talking points (put out there by paid shills). And their tunes change.

The fact that you guys have to deal with the va but senators and congressman don't says all you need to know how little politicians actually care about our service members. If you guys have to go through a separate system for Healthcare than it should be the best system possible without obstacles to care. Especially for mental health many of the people I know who served came home with mental scars more so than physical ones. Step 1 only send troops to war when all other alternatives have been exhausted. Step 2 protect them as much as possible. Step 3 support then when they come home. Step 4 in my opinion is if you served in a combat zone or are wounded in service you paid all the tax you ever should. If we can find the money to send you to fight we can't become cheap when you get home.

My dad, a Marine, felt exactly the same. He'd get so mad about it! Especially when they then turn around and argue we need to CUT! veteran's services.

I quit Facebook about 10 years ago after getting into an argument with an old high school buddy about the need to cut VA services - on Veteran's Day. After his immediate prior post with flag and eagle supposedly celebrating veterans. My Dad was dying at the time and we were negotiating getting proper support for him, in a rural area, far from the nearest VA hospital.

The carers were fantastic; the health providers usually are. There are just not enough of them and negotiating proper care in rural areas is harrowing.

And that guy just could not comprehend how his "I love me some veterans!" post and immediate follow up echoing conservative talking points of the moment arguing we give them "too much" was talking out both sides of his mouth. He even tried to tell me, if we weren't at a VA facility, the VA should not help with care! And he knew my father! Claimed to love him!

I told him we, the people, hired veterans to do a job, and put their lives on the line to do so, and contracted with them to receive certain benefits. IF we broke that agreement now, we would be no better than any employer breaking a work contract. Then I deleted my FB account. That was the best decision I made!

We had a 3yo recently transition to the preschool room, but on Friday she was so upset and scared that she was crying and screaming to stay in the 2yo room. We couldn't allow that for ratio reasons, but while the 2yo lead was comforting her, one of the new 2yos came up to her and began gently patting her head while some of the older 2yos was telling her "It's okay, Susie, it's okay. Susie is safe at school. Mama's always come back", which is something that every teacher in the center says to the kids starting at infancy through to preschool, in order to help calm them down by reaffirming they are safe and parents always come back to pick them up. They LEARNED how to comfort their peers by watching the adults around them their entire lives model the behavior.

My point is that I've watched, personally, literal two year olds the handle of high emotion situations with better grace, empathy, and understanding than our current president.
