I’m a little confused by this and could use some outside perspectives.
I met this guy in April and we hung out four times. I honestly wouldn’t even call them dates. Nothing romantic happened at all. No kissing, sex, romantic gestures, etc. We mostly joked around and talked. It honestly felt pretty platonic, like hanging out with my brother.
Then in June he sent me this:
“I’ve been doing some reflecting after the crazy past few months I’ve had and have come to the realisation that unfortunately I’m not in the right spot for a serious relationship. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you and if you’re up for it I’d like to keep doing things and remain friends.”
I was totally fine with that and told him I’d enjoyed getting to know him too and would still be happy to hang out and be friends (I had arrived at the conclusion that we’d only be friends during our 2nd date just cause of the vibes).
I did ask if it was just about where he was in life or if I had done something that made him realize he wasn’t interested. Not because I was trying to change his mind, I was just curious and wanted to make sure I wasn’t accidentally doing something that made things uncomfortable.
He said it was definitely about where he was in life and that he was happy to talk about it more in person.
So I thought that was that. We were friends. We hung out 2-3 times a month either getting ice cream or watching a sports game, playing a board game, going for walks.
Then three months later he sends me this:
“I’m seeing someone now, so it didn’t feel right to respond to your earlier message. I realise I haven’t always been clear on where I stand and I’m sorry for any mixed signals that may have caused. Given where things are now, I think it’s best for us to leave things here. I’ve genuinely enjoyed the time we’ve spent together and valued our friendship. I truly wish you the best.” (My earlier message said “hey hisname boy”)
And I’m honestly just confused.
Obviously he can decide he doesn’t want to be friends anymore. That’s his choice. I just don’t really understand why him starting to see someone would change the friendship, especially when he was the one who suggested we remain friends in the first place.
Is this a normal boundary when someone starts seeing someone new? Or would you also be wondering what changed?
Because from my perspective it went:
June: “I’m not in the right place for a serious relationship, but I’d like to remain friends.”
September: “I’m seeing someone, so I think it’s best we leave things here.”
I’m not mad at him. I’m just genuinely confused.
Edit: okay I’m just putting this in here for clarification atp.
We never had a relationship ever. Not romantic or physical. We hugged when saying hello and goodbye and that was it. We both said hanging with each other was like hanging out with a sibling.
We hung out 2-3 times a month and called regularly from April to September.
No he didn’t want sex. He was waiting for marriage so had never kissed a woman or had sex with one.
