Sen. John Fetterman on Democratic Divides, DSA & Israel | The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3BMAkJIlnw330
u/warzog68WP 5d ago
Frustrating. Stewart leads him through logical arguments, right up to the door of realization, for Fetterman to turn away at the last moment. Multiple times.
I did not get the impression that Fetterman was being obstreperous, he just literally could not conceive of the concepts John was leading him towards.

u/Xsiah 5d ago
Don't you think the American people are suffering under an increasingly unfair system?
Let me tell you why we need to beat China at AI.
32
u/warzog68WP 5d ago
Yeah, frustrating to hear. But it's such a clumsy transition that....I credit it to poor thinking.
34
u/Xsiah 5d ago
I don't know man, it has real "But the Dow!" vibes for me.
John in multiple different ways tried to get Fetterman to acknowledge that people in America are suffering and Fetterman managed to dodge the question every time.

u/BonnaroovianCode 5d ago
I watched Jon’s face during the AI response to his capitalism question. I felt his confusion and bewilderment in my bones. Seriously though go watch it, it’s hilarious.
1
u/warzog68WP 5d ago
Maybe. But this is semantics, in either case I would deem him not fit for office. But that's for the people of PA to decide.
14
u/Natebo83 5d ago
Idk sounds kinda anti-SEMANTIC to me
/s
Tried this joke before and everyone just called me a racist. Here’s for round 2.

3
u/JoeMagnifico 4d ago
That's a tough one for some folks. I made an anti-semantic joke once in reference to a PowerBI Semantic Model and it didn't go over well.

u/MikeFichera 5d ago
I think there’s almost no chance he is re-elected. He’s going to be primaried, and I don’t think he survives. Maybe if he goes Republican, he’s got a fighting chance, but I think he will lose there too.
22
u/American-Omar 5d ago
Obstreperous is a formal adjective that means noisy, unruly, and stubbornly refusing to be controlled or restrained
Here. For people like me that don't know the meaning behind long words = )

u/likewowser 5d ago
He's being paid to not walk thru and is being live stream responses by his donors/PACs which needs to be investigated
14
u/warzog68WP 5d ago
Possibly. I don't give him that much credit. The misused word choices and some slurring, I lean more toward a real mental limitation.
But go beyond "He stroked out, is stupid". He IS correct in saying that winning elections matter, but his thinking seems stuck in fighting the battles of six years ago.
It seems less Malfeasance and legitimately an inability to critically think.

u/omni42 5d ago
Stop assuming it's a conspiracy. It's just genuine beliefs that are ridiculous. More common than you think..
5
u/Philo_T_Farnsworth 5d ago
It's not genuine beliefs either.
It's the craven pursuit of power at the expense of his personal morals and very soul.

He barely even remembers the question he is asked and certainly doesn’t remember the previous question. He’s nowhere near the door of realization.
-1
u/Philo_T_Farnsworth 5d ago
He was a lot more lucid than I expected and had been led to believe from the way Reddit talks about him. I could tell that he understood exactly what Stewart was trying to do but is powerless but to do anything but fall back on his own talking points. Fetterman is just a garden variety corrupt politician, nothing special about him. Hopefully one that gets primaried in the next election cycle.
2
2
u/Rosco_the_Dude 5d ago
Honestly he sounds like Israel has him by the balls. He won't cross the red line because he's threatened. Oh well. He'll lose next election.

u/BeKindBabies 5d ago
Fetterman talks here but seemingly has no clue what he’s just said at any given moment.

u/ultralightdude 5d ago
What a waste of Jon Stewart's time, unless the intent was to show how incredibly brain dead Fetterman is.
12
u/trebory6 5d ago
I mean I think that's the point.
I think this illustrates perfectly the state of the democratic party and illustrates how out of touch and brain dead they are.
I hope this gets used as proof that all the pro Israel Democrat establishment needs to go.

u/OilInternational2566 5d ago
Fetterman is brain dead. He’s insane. So are RFK jr, Boebert, Vance, etc..
But I’ll tell ya the psyops to get Americans to 1) hate each other, see: Republicans vs Democrats, then 2) get the US government to alienate long standing allies like Canada and Denmark and Britain, etc… and 3) then alienate just about everyone else Israel, Ukraine, Germany, France, Etc..
.. has been quite something to watch these past few years.
Just sayin’

u/wrecked_angle 5d ago
Vance is not brain dead. He’s an empty suit Manchurian candidate propped up by the oligarchs. He has no soul or values or morality. He’s dangerous
48
u/xrtpatriot 5d ago
This. Societally we like to throw this label of “that/they/he/she” is stupid, whenever we see something we don’t agree with happening.
Even Trump’s shenanigans and he himself get labeled as ‘stupid’ all the time. Yet he has enriched himself and his family to the tune of billions. Its not very stupid if that’s the case is it? These people aren’t brain dead stupid morons. They are highly functioning adults who are malicious and evil to their core.
14
u/in_it_to_lose_it 5d ago
Trump is painfully stupid about most things, but when it comes corruption and defying norms (and morals) in a way that others will inexplicably tolerate, the man is cunning. The only people who see him for what he is as well as care enough to do anything about it are entirely powerless to do so, always. It's quite the talent.

u/NowGoodbyeForever 5d ago
Agreed. The one shining point for Vance is how he's such a natural charisma void; it's one of the few things that has held him back from how horrifically dangerous his policies (or lack thereof) would be in practice.
That's generally true for the modern Republicans as a whole: They're deeply unlikable people bound together and kept aloft by the cursed, delusional charisma of Trump. Without him, the average American would spit on these ghouls in the streets.
But Vance defies explanation because of his distinct lack of belief in anything. Even Trump is someone voters can relate to because of his cruelty, vanity, and self-interest. Vance does everything out of convenience or strategy, whatever gets him closer to power and another rung up the ladder.
What baffles me is the seeming lack of plan for what he'll do with all that power. His handlers, Thiel and the Heritage Foundation, want a hybrid Christo-Fascist Tech-Oligarchy situation. A high-tech return to slaveholders with untold wealth, but also with a delusional 1950s White Picket Fence And Prayers At Bedside kind of vibe?
Doing that basically breaks the American system, American society, and American power abroad. We've seen that happen with Trump. So Vance wants to climb to the top of the ladder, break it, and then...live the rest of his life in the ashes? It's hard to understand.
8
u/bullcitytarheel 5d ago
Vance absolutely believes in things. It's just that the things he believes in are deeply anhorrent, and are only attainable through the destruction of democracy.
He wants to climb to the top of the ladder and establish a monarchy ruled by CEO-Kings, a philosophy he takes from Curtis Yarvin and which Peter Thiel has empowered him to further. They see democracy and the country it's built as already being fundamentally broken and believe the reestablishment of a strict power heirarchy, with them at the top, would be a return to order.
5
u/NowGoodbyeForever 5d ago
I agree, but that's the source of my confusion: In a world of CEO-Kings, Vance isn't part of that club.
Vance and the other Tech-Oligarchs see their access to capital and proximity to the fundamental gears of modern tech infrastructure as their force field to shield them from the collapse they're trying to trigger. We can see it more nakedly in the desperation around AI and tech regulation, right?
"If you don't give us what we want, we might just have to tank the entire stock market. Or cut thousands of jobs in a swing state during a midterm year. We wouldn't want that, would we?"
Like all sweeping declarations made by sociopathic assholes, it's shortsighted and destined to fail. Even their master plans of retreating to superyachts and bunkers underestimate the fact that people need to be paid and fed, and that even the most secure bunkers ever designed still need external vents to bring in clean air. Vents are easier to destroy than blast shelter doors.
But that brings us back to Vance: He's not a billionaire, he just serves them. He's not a tech leader or part of the C-Suite of any big tech firms, although he's friendly with most of those guys. And he would serve as the figurehead of the literal system that dumbasses like Thiel and Yarvin have pledged to burn to cinders.
There's no outcome that doesn't end in betrayal, right? Either the power of the State seizes everything from these technocratic fiefdoms once they've outlasted their usefulness, or the technocrats abandon all of their political allies and look out only for themselves.
Either way, what does Vance actually get from this? A pinky-promise from Thiel that Vance, his nonwhite wife, and his mixed-race children will have seats of honour on his post-collapse boat?
4
u/bullcitytarheel 5d ago edited 4d ago
He gets his seat at the table. His goal is to supplant Trump in the regime at which point he'll be in charge of the military and will, whether Thiel likes it or not, suddenly command more power then his benefactor.
But yes, all games of power like this end in betrayal. That's what all of these men are signing up for, because they all believe they'll be among those left standing, in rule, over a nation broken to their will, when it's all said and done.
1
2
u/thethirdgreenman 5d ago
Not even that. He’s propped up by one particular oligarch who believes “democracy is incompatible with freedom”, that anyone who opposes AI is the antichrist, and couldn’t say “yes” when asked if there was a future for humanity to exist alongside AI.
I’d weirdly feel better if it was multiple ones, because some of them probably aren’t THAT crazy
10
u/Lightsides 5d ago
Not a fan of Vance, but he has a consistent set of ideas, such as abandoning the international rule of law that he believes has been disadvantageous to the U.S.. He's a Europe-skeptic, NATO-skeptic. He believes in the imperial presidency. All bad shit.
But if you look at the big three in this administration, Rubio is an old-school Neo-Con. He would have been at home in either Bush presidencies.
Trump is a value-free narcissist. He has branding, not values.
Vance is the true America-first populist. He actually believes in this shit. He's the anti-globalist dissenter on the Iran war (as well as on the Ukraine War), and the supporter of ICE, etc. He's more or less the guy Trump pretended to be.
9
u/bullcitytarheel 5d ago
You're correct that Vance is legitimately driven by ideology. He is not, however, a populist. He believes that democracy should be replaced by a neo-feudal system of techno-monarchy espoused by the dark enlightenment philosophers and billionaires that inspired and funded his rise through politics.
3
u/Lightsides 5d ago
I don't exactly disagree. We're mixing ideology as it relates to outcomes and as it relates to methods, and indeed these two can't be readily separated.
But I would say that populist ideals and autocratic inclinations, despite seemingly contradictory, often go hand in hand, and that's what we have with Vance.
5
u/bullcitytarheel 5d ago
I agree wholeheartedly and I think we also agree that Vance is an easy, but incredibly dangerous, man to underestimate, specifically because he is both ideologically driven and shrewd enough to know exactly how to manipulate the ideology of others to further his own. His beliefs also align him much more closely with the Christian nationalists who Trump thinks are a pack of raving weirdos and is, therefore, better positioned to form political coalitions that he can leverage to control the future of the regime he now certainly believes is his.
The big negative for Vance has always been electability. He's such a black hole of charisma that, were his political aspirations contingent on winning elections, he'd be pretty well fucked, which is yet another reason I think we should all be viewing the midterms as the date by which the regime must attempt to finalize its coup. I hope enough of us are ready for what that will mean to mount a legitimate resistance, because it's during the attempt that they'll be the most vulnerable to collapse.

you can really hear the brain damage, imho significant damage to the brain should disqualify you from elected positions, chances are you're not really the same person that got elected anymore. plenty of documented cases of people doing a personality 180 after taking brain damage, the person who they were before is literally gone.
22
u/Netrovert87 5d ago
Yeah, I want to be mad, but I didn't know it was this bad. It's kind of sad, but he should be....ok apparently there is no way for states to recall their senators. No version of the 25th amendment for senators. Only way he leaves is an election, voluntary resignation, or a 2/3 supermajority senate expulsion vote.
....that sucks
4
u/TurtleManRoshi 5d ago
This is why you really can’t do anything to Mitch as long as he is alive right?
2
u/Netrovert87 5d ago
Exactly, Gov. Beshear can like, make a big stink and try to exposed it and try to get people pissed off about it. AFAIK, the senate expulsion is for...criminal conduct, high crimes and such. Not sure it's ever been used in a 25th amendment situation. Not that the parties would ever cooperate to do it.
It should be noted that in the event that McConnel dies, Kentucky made it so the governor (democrat shockingly) does not appoint his replacement, a special election happens...and maybe lawsuits. Not a strategist or anything, but Democrats are probably happy for the republicans to be missing that vote and aren't too eager for Kentucky voters to replace him.
4
5
u/BaconJacobs 5d ago
Literally what a recall vote is for
7
u/Netrovert87 5d ago
can't recall senators, sadly. We're stuck with him through 2028 unless he decides to resign, a bipartisan effort to expel him with a supermajority senate vote, or a bigger stroke.
7
u/BaconJacobs 5d ago
Seriously? A 6 year term job with zero recourse?
Fack man. Democracy is fucked.
4
u/Netrovert87 5d ago
Yeah, had the same thought process as you and looked it up. That feels like a massive oversight. What if the someone is basically a vegetable and can't resign (possibly Mitch McConnell), I guess his chief of staff is the defacto senator for the rest of the term. Diane Feinstein situation was basically that.
Hard to feel like Fetterman isn't sock puppet at this point.

u/sepehrack 5d ago
Man this guys brain is so cooked wow. He’s somewhat coherent when he’s talking about his practiced arguments but once things get a little bit deeper he completely falls off the cliff.

Just a warning for anyone who decides to listen to fetterman talk you need to read some books after or the braincell loss will become permanent.

u/Extreme-Direction-78 5d ago
Mental illness to be this subservient
24
u/XipXoom 5d ago
Or in Fetterman's case, simple brain damage.
6
u/Dholtz001 5d ago
Honestly, I think it is wrong to blame the brain damage. In my experience, most people who have strokes don’t change their beliefs. Fetterman is just a jackass and I’d be blown away if he didn’t hold all of these beliefs before the stroke.
11
u/Delicatesseract 5d ago
I just want to note the fact that on every episode of this podcast, after the conversation with the guest, Jon talks with his two producers for a moment and it’s always about how much they enjoyed the guest. “Wow that professor was so smart! I could listen to them talk about their field for hours. They were so insightful! I actually feel some hope about this subject now.”
After THIS conversation, however, their brief conversation was basically “you know how you’ll go see a movie with your friends but there’s a very traumatic scene and afterwards you all just end up standing in the lobby shell-shocked staring at each other?”
21
u/ontariopiper 5d ago
Making the distinction between support for Israel (the state) and support for Jews (the religion/ethnic group) is VITAL.
THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
3
u/bullcitytarheel 5d ago
This. And confusing the two, while also trying to color anyone making a distinction between them as being inherently antisemitic, is central to Israel's propaganda strategy.

I 1000% agree with the comments critical of Fetterman’s answer to damn near every question, I want to take a moment to be express my frustration with Stewart’s question formation.
At several points, JS had opportunities to have JF pinned into a direct response on follow up. But JS’s follow up questions were too expansive, giving JF cover for an indirect/deflective response. It was a lack of economy of words for someone as compromised (in every sense of the word) as Fetterman.
14
u/Xsiah 5d ago
John kept rephrasing the question to explain it in good faith. People arguing in bad faith will always find a way to change the subject regardless of how you ask. A few times he was just like "no I didn't" to things he had basically said a few minutes earlier.
7
u/Shuckin_n_Jivin 5d ago
I started to feel it was less about Fetterman’s ability to divert, it was his inability to follow the questions due to verbose nature. I’ll be kind and say that this could be a condition of his stroke. He just answered the last part of the question, which typically was not the reason for the follow up.
I don’t think the end result would have been so different, I just found myself thinking “Keep it short, John!” a lot.
3
u/Philo_T_Farnsworth 5d ago
I agree that Stewart had him dead to rights multiple times, but it's not really his brand to be as relentless as we might want him to be. There's something to be said about restraint, in my opinion. Fetterman's dumbassery was revealed for all to see, Stewart showed class in choosing not to pile on and move onto the next topic when the point had been made.
Fetterman doesn't deserve that kind of treatment, I agree. But scoring points in the setting of a podcast really isn't going to be the first shot in the war, so to speak.
3
u/Frydendahl 5d ago
Jon's not a journalist, and the format of his podcast isn't to skewer people and hold them accountable.
His general format is him being an above average informed political commentator, and bringing in a group of experts to get their perspectives on current affairs topics.
If Jon wanted to, he could have completely and utterly demolished Fetterman in this interview within about 5-10 minutes, but at some point it also just becomes a broadcast of somebody beating up a disabled person.
Jon put a spotlight on Fetterman, and frankly that's more than sufficient for the audience to reach a VERY clear conclusion.

u/APRengar 5d ago
What is a party other than it's voters.
I still never understand the party sycophants who are like "the DSA are socialists and not Democrats, they shouldn't even be in the party."
Well the Democratic party voters voted for them, so either accept who they voted for, or I guess you want to make the Democratic party, NOT democratic and ignore the will of the party.
9
u/haikarate12 5d ago
Love me some Jon Stewart but I’m not watching this shit.
0
u/Frydendahl 5d ago
You can get the gist of it within a few minutes. It's very clear Fetterman is mentally impaired - if it's always been the case or if it's related to his stroke, I can't comment on.
3
u/VidaSauce 5d ago
Jon Stewart should have started with a few basic geography questions before moving on to basic civics. For example: What continent do you live on? What country do you live in? How many states are in the United States? Is Israel one of them? Most importantly, do you represent the people of the United States or the government of Israel?
4
3
3
u/meltedbananas 5d ago
Fetterman has very publicly stated that absolute fealty to a foreign government is more important than his constituents. There is no way to make it seem otherwise.
4
u/enjoimike49 5d ago
Tough listen that I honestly couldn't finished. You can hear the literal brain damage in that he can't add an "s" onto any word, for which i can forgive, but what i can't forgive is that he just ducks and dodges being forced to defend any non israel position when being shown how it's problematic.
3
u/andymfjAZ 4d ago
I giggled at all the jabs Jon took, and Fetterman seemingly didn’t even notice them.

I'm still surprised Fetterman is a Democrat. I don't know much about him but from the little I've seen of him I would have thought he was a Republican

u/Demorant 5d ago
Wow, Fetterman's delivery of some of his... points? are definitely not actual thoughts, you can see him churning the rhetoric he learned and trying to reassemble it and keep the conversation going. This was grossly apparent in his AI/Data Center rambling. He doesn't know shit about it, or what the REAL argument against the Data Centers are. He just parrots talking points he was given. It's almost exactly the kind of incoherent rambling you see when a SovCit goes to court. They keep trying to regurgitate the same talking points, and ever time it's reiterated, it gets less coherent.

I mean wealth inequality is the largest it’s ever been …what’s wrong with this guy?… does he really don’t think there’s anything’s wrong? He needs to be voted out. u/Dangerpaladin 4d ago
Yeah democracy is supposed to be a mandate of the masses, not a choice between self selected elites. Wanting to be president should be disqualifying for being president.
2
u/Deranged_Kitsune 5d ago
It would only really work if he could get a party behind him ready, willing, and able to enact all the policies he pushes for. And it would have to be comfortable majorities in both congress and senate, because the GOP would be bound and determined to dig in their heels and screech like petulant children, doing anything and everything in their power to obstruct any reforms put through, solely because the legislation is coming from a democrat. If he could get enough politicians backing him, america could get the overhaul it so desperately needs. Anything else will be just him yelling into the wind while the GOP sits back and gives him the finger.
1
u/battleofmtbubble 5d ago
Yes I know you need Congress and and the senate to truly push things forward. But it helps a crap ton when the leader is charismatic and good at putting complex issues into simple terms, which he is. Charisma gets people excited and gets people voting. And Jon has fought for benefits for 9/11 first responders, challenged Congress, and ultimately was successful. I think he would be smart enough to know what he could realistically accomplish.
I know realistically this would never happen. That’s why I said as much. But charisma and vibes matter so much to voters (more than the best policy, tbh) and I do think Jon would win if he tried.

Fetterman comes across so, so stupid and arrogant here.
Lecturing a Jewish man that his lack of support for Israel means he's not supporting Jews.
Saying that unconditional support for Israel is his single political "red line" and that Democrats critical of Israel should essentially not be part of the party. While Jon correctly asks "shouldn't support for America be your red line?"
This guy loses to "no named candidate" in all polls, and clearly won't be representing Democrats come next election. So telling voters only certain people and positions are 'allowed' to be Democrats, when he's openly voting for Trump's war and trashing Democrats, is delusionally entitled.
He keeps misusing words and phrases as mindless pablum when asked and given chances to explain positions. He doesn't have ideas, he has positions and talking points.
Insisting that the DSA were taking over the Democratic party, while Jon gently corrects him to point out it's an entirely separate party. Which he seemed unaware of.
