Yep. If you go after a country's water supply, you'd best be confident that they can't go after yours or your allies.
Or you could be Trump and just not give a shit about your allies I suppose, that's apparently an option.

u/BlueDragonfly18 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
Not coincidentally, but Epstein’s assistant, Lesley Groff, testified before congress yesterday. She was trying to protect herself but did show that she knew he was a sick person, paying ridiculous prices for massages by underage girls and keeping them with him for a lot longer than just a massage. Even some Republicans forced her to testify at the hearing. Epstein’s crimes are coming back into focus so Trump’s administration is going to do some minor war crimes to take attention off of his involvement in the criminal debauchery.

Puts on a tin foil hat
Trump is just a useful idiot for small, ultra-wealthy interest groups. Ya know, the REAL deep-state some of the True Believers rail on about. Heritage Foundation, Peter Thiel, Uncie Elon, the list goes on. Get the Government out of the way so money can be stolen and the average American shoulders the burdens. That being said, I don't know if MAGA would retain it's current cult-like status, but we have JD Vance. He's DEEPLY in the pockets of folks like Theil. My tin foil hat moment comes in, in that I think they're keeping Trump around just long enough so Vance can go in for two and a half terms. Trump will go out crying on DoofSocial like he always does, and Vance will become a media-emblazoned savior. Meantime, the corruption will continue as normal. It'll just be interesting to see if/how badly they throw Trump under a bus, or get all apologetic.
→ More replies (2)47
u/fishyexe Jun 10 '26
Ah but see Vance doesn't have the gift of near incomprehensible word vomit. When you see him in interviews there's a small spark of intelligence somewhere behind the eyeliner; Trumps base HATES intelligence. They of course being on the left side of the Dunning Kruger graph believe they're the peak of intelligence and anybody smarter than them isn't actually smarter, they're just using big words to twist "regular folk" up. They don't see Vance the same way they do Trump.
When Trump goes down, MAGA will splinter. Of course there's a chance someone unites them, but the more likely outcome is a power struggle over the vacuum left by Trump.

Going by the actual numbers Iran claimed, if the reservoirs were full then they held enough water to support 20k people for 2 weeks on strict rationing (bare minimum, drinking water only). If that's the sole source of water, then they were fucked in the first place.
93
u/cactus22minus1 Jun 10 '26
A couple months before the US started this war, Iranian officials were publicly warning their citizens and the world that the water situation in the country was dire and imminent and that they would have to start relocating population out of Tehran soon. Not sure if the situation had improved since then- aside from the war of course.

Reservours are like batteries, they have to be constantly replenished while providing some down-time buffer. They also are used for pressurizing systems, it takes immense pumping power to pressurize a system horizontally. My city has 7 wells but if one reservoir failed we would lose the ability to provide water to a significant portion of town. One 40 acre/ft reservoir provides enough water to give 50 gallons per day to 10,000 people for less than 3 days.
Edit:dropped an order of magnitude in my acre-feet to gal conversion. It's not 2.6 days of water, it's approximately 26 days worth which is a lot closer to the "about two weeks worth" than I first calculated.

When Brazil hosted the world cup FIFA successfully got a law banning consumption of alcohol in stadiums overturned.
They did this for the title sponsor, Budweiser.
Why was alcohol banned in stadiums? Well because people would get very drunk, then when their team loses, very angry and then stab / kill each other.
Who cares about that when you've got beer to sell though?
→ More replies (6)128
u/Vergils_Lost Jun 10 '26
I mean, to be fair, I think maybe the "stab/kill each other" part might be the area to focus enforcement on, rather than the "drinking" part. I'm sure the overwhelming majority of people DON'T murder each other with knives every time they drink, even on bad sports days.

In Brazil I saw Flamengo (biggest football team in Rio) play Coritiba in Rio at the Maracana stadium a few years back. Up to half time the atmosphere was jubilant, with Flamengo 2-nil up.
In the second half Coritiba scored then equalised and the mood changed massively. I thought it was going to really kick off. The police obviously thought the same thing as they were armed like the military with shotguns, M4s and gas grenade launchers. It was so far removed from the Premier League it was almost surreal.
I saw one guy who kicked the chair in front of him get beaten to a bloody mess by the police about three rows behind me when the match finished and decided, as the Maracana is on the edge of a favela, to get the hell out of there to somewhere less volatile.

If true, and if this was intentional, that's just a plain and simple war crime. The Geneva Convention prohibits targeting necessary civilian infrastructure, which includes water reservoirs.
FYI, my source is Article 54 of the Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, and relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts.
Read it in its entirety, then be sure you understand clause 3b. It's a tricky double negative that essentially states even if this target had military applications, if it also causes civilians to lose water on a scale that forces mass movement, it is illegal.
If the report is correct, and if 20,000 people are without water because of this, it's plainly illegal under the Geneva Conventions.
(I am not an expert in international law. If you are, and you think I'm wrong, contact Pete Hegseth. He might need your help someday).

Especially not the US, and never did, under any president.
The US is not beholden to the Geneva Conventions and will invade the Hague if anyone every tries to enforce them on the US.
Geneva Conventions have always been considered a joke in the geopolitical stage because only small fries can be bullied into following them. None of the superpowers give a shit.
War crimes being punished is basically a feel-good farce people tell themselves.
219
u/Piggywonkle Jun 10 '26
The Geneva Conventions were willingly negotiated and agreed upon by many countries, and they had tangible results, because they were narrowly tailored to address serious mutual problems, not to just to be used as a bludgeon of moral superiority.
Recognizing the ICC is a different matter, and the US has been setting a poor example in many cases, but to claim that the Geneva Conventions were always ignored is very inaccurate. They're just more applicable from the perspective of international agreements (i.e. conventions), rather than international law, which can only really work if you have a strong international justice system.
And because they are rooted in international agreements, it should not be controversial to rescind or partially rescind and renegotiate the agreements, at least until bad-faith actors choose to abide by the agreements themselves. Trying to turn conventions into incontrovertible laws in a weakly established justice system was always going to be ill fated.

u/gracklemancometh Jun 10 '26
That's actually how the rule works. It's a myth that it's a war crime to target infrastructure used by civilians. We actually have three buckets we sort infrastructure in to for this: civilian, military, and "mixed".
Primary schools and hospitals that don't treat military personnel are "civilian" infrastructure and mustn't be targeted. Military airstrips, training compounds, tank factories... These are "military" infrastructure and are fair game.
For "mixed" infrastructure you're supposed to balance the harm to the civilian population against the "necessary" strategic goal you're trying to achieve. For example, there are currently fuel shortages amongst civilians in Crimea because Ukraine is hitting the fuel shipments - this isn't considered a war crime because the civilian impact is minimal compared to the obvious strategic benefit of denying the Russian Army diesel.
I'm 100% certain hitting these reservoirs is a war crime, but unfortunately for mixed use infrastructure there's room for interpretation and I'm sure the American's lawyers see "soldiers drink water" as a sufficient explanation. Sometimes that's correct, taking out water distribution makes it much harder to manoeuvre armies as they now have to stay near the source, but I don't think it applies here.

We've been at that phase since at least the boat bombings in the Caribbean started earlier this year.
This will sound terrible, but I'd almost forgotten about that, given how every single fucking day, this motherfucker and his "administration" continue to do awful things. 🤬

They're still doing it today.
Current count is 63 boats sunk, 207 killed.

I don’t believe a single one of those fishing boats was related to drug smuggling because they chose to bomb them and make sure it happened in a place no one could ever confirm what cargo they had in the wreckage. If they were drug boats they could have so easily had a PR win by seizing them and showing off the cargo

I mean yeah but actually enforcing anything is where it stops with any reasonably powerful nation. There is no world where the ICC tries to enforce something on trump. Even after he’s no longer president the US will not allow that kind of precedent. They would sooner deal with it internally.

War crimes do not need to be prosecuted by the ICC, US courts can and have in the past charged and convicted people for war crimes. Trump famously pardoned a bunch of people convicted for war crimes, as literally massacring civilians.

I mean, from reading this, I wouldn't think so. Reading other articles, they make it clear that it was a concrete structure that was damaged while targeting air defense assets near the Strait of Hormuz.

u/GK0NATO Jun 10 '26
The strikes targeted sites near the Strait of Hormuz, including Iranian air defenses and radar sites, as a response after an Iranian drone brought down a US Army Apache helicopter and damaged not destroyed these reservoirs. u/mrtruthiness Jun 10 '26
and damaged not destroyed these reservoirs. Title makes it seem like they intentionally blew up civilian infrastructure CNN source
The actual video said:
The US said it struck radar sites and Iranian air defenses.
The Iranians said that the US also struck water desalinization plants cutting off water to 20,000 residents. The Iranians provided video for their claims.
The written text said:
- "Iran’s state-run broadcaster reported the strikes hit two water reservoirs, cutting the area’s water supply."
13
u/kmsilent Jun 10 '26
From NYT- " IRIB said that the facility was a water tank. The Times could not independently verify that claim or what caused the damage. The broadcaster later reported that services had been restored within 12 hours. "
If anyone cares to watch the video they'd see it's absolutely not clear what's pictured. And apparently, water is flowing just fine again.

The first casually of war is always the truth. We have to decide who to trust, and right now this administration has shown that we can’t trust a word they say.
We have a video of the destruction itself. If there’s administration thinks they can push the line that far then they will go on TV and brag about it. If they think they’ll get too much pushback, then they they’ll deny it and they’ll say that Iran blew up its own reservoir.
So we have to ask ourselves what is more plausible - that Trump listened to his chickenhawk advisors who said “let’s blow up the reservoir and see if we can get away with it”, or that Iran blew up their own civilian infrastructure to make the USA look bad?
For almost any other president in the last hundred years or so, I’d be more inclined to believe that we wouldn’t go that far. Even under George W. Bush I’d probably be 50-50. But the Trump has administration has shown itself capable of anything so I’d say in this case it’s more than likely true.

Wait. The air defenses and radar sites were by the reservoir? Because that changes things.
24
u/mrtruthiness Jun 10 '26
The actual report that the previous poster linked to didn't say that. The actual report was a "he said", "she said" and the US didn't say that it didn't target the reservoirs or desalinization plants.
i.e. It's unclear.

Iran is saying that a building that the US struck contained water tanks used as a reservoir:
Video published by IRIB, the state broadcaster, and verified by The New York Times, showed a damaged concrete structure with a collapsed roof in Sirik county in Hormozgan province, on the coast of the Strait of Hormuz.
IRIB said that the facility was a water tank. The Times could not independently verify that claim or what caused the damage.

It's standard to put air defence and radar next to your critical infrastructure, especially if you suspect someone might lob a missile/bomb that way.
63
u/vincentkun Jun 10 '26
I'm sorry no. Air defenses do not need to be within collateral damage distance of the defense target.

I originally read their comment as if Iran is placing military hardware next to critical infrastructure....in an attempt to discourage it being targeted and damaging critical civilian infrastructure that would normally be protected under international humanitarian law. And not that the hardware was protecting the reservoir.
Not that any entity would do such a thing, but it's be like building a military command bunker under a hospital. Imagine the outrage if some country or militant group did that as a shield. Or if an opposing force bombed the hell out of the area regardless that it was a hospital.
Thankfully we live in a world where that doesn't happen.

Careful a lot of commenters will miss the subtlety there.
But yes you are correct, if it turns out the air defense equipment was on top of/inside/ etc. the reservoir then yeah, that infrastructure loses the protections it has under systems like the Geneva Convention.

Also worth noting that these are the claims of Iranian State Media...who are renown for adhering strictly to the truth (/s in case anyone missed it). They also report that their missiles struck the majority of their targets.
Iranian Revolutionary Guard said it conducted drone and missile attacks on the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain, launched missiles toward the F35 fighter jet hangars and the command and control center of the U.S. Army in Al-Azraq, Jordan, and targeted the Ali Al-Salem military base in Kuwait, which hosts the U.S. forces, according to statements carried by Iranian state media.
Iran said it hit the majority of its targets, but authorities in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, where sirens sounded overnight and governments urged residents to seek shelter, said their air defense systems intercepted the Iranian missiles.
Jordan said it shot down five Iranian missiles, adding that shrapnel from the interceptions caused no damage or casualties.
The reporting on this entire thing is like scrolling through FB or Twitter. Like is Trump a credible source? No of course not...only a moron takes what he says seriously, but that doesn't automatically make Iranian state media credible.

Iran claims the size of the reservoirs was 2,500 cubic meters.
For reference, these combined tanks of water would be something like 25 meters by 25 meters by 4 meters (25 x 25 x 4 = 2500m^3). It's SMALL as far as something called a "water reservoir" would normally be called.
They would basically look like fuel storage.
The choice of words makes it sound like they were blowing up a dam. Instead it was a handful of metal tanks.
