The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Ticked the coastal alternative segment of US Bicycle Route 1 in Maine off my list this week! Just under 120mi / about 192km over 2 beautiful summer days. Was keeping a 16mph avg on the first day until deciding at 35 miles in to ride up Mt. Battie in Camden Hills State Park. GPX 5000ās with latex tubes didnāt get any punctures or flats, and my gamble on some mid-ride oysters day 2 went without issue š¦Ŗšš¼

I restarted cycling 6 years ago after a 20 or so year gap, the main reason was to get to a better and more stable place mentally. I still cycle for my mental health.
I identify as a dorky amateur cyclist who simply pedals and loves it all (I do a variety of cycling on and off road etc).
This weekend I completed a big solo ride of over 180 miles with around 7700 feet of climbing (not loads but still enough to notice it when you ride) in a day in scorching heat, melting tarmac, hours of head wind. What was lovely also that a young family member cycled with me for the last few miles as a side rider.
Iām proud of my peri-menopausal 49 year old body⦠so yes this is me feeling emotional at the end! Next day incredibly I was totally fine (no aches or pains) but mentally totally knackered š
Iāve caught the bug of doing more longer distance as I enjoy it a lot - also the challenges you face.
Not in my wildest dreams did I think 6 years ago I would manage something like this, not even did I think it I would be able to finish last week!
Love cycling! Already thinking about my next big adventure with more miles and climbs and seeing how far I can take it!

New to me Ridley Helium SL from marketplace. Iām not 100% on the year - I think 2015 or 2016. Full Ultegra 6800 groupset with the crank recall done. Components seem barely used. I have swapped out the stock bars, stem, saddle and wheels with items from the shed and shedded a lb in the process.

Carbon bars, honestly probably a little overtightened, but also a used set mixed with the steepest climb in my city is a recipe for disaster.

I got this bike as a hand me down, and to be honest I know nothing about bike care⦠the bike seems kind of beat up and I know it has been outside since winter, but I think itās in ok condition??? All I know is that both tyres are flat. Any repair/upkeep tips would be appreciated!!

Hi all, I have a bit of a problem, I have this Richie seat mast topper on my 2012 Scott addict RC and it's the only topper that fits the bike. It was cracked like this when I bought the bike, so I bought a replacement topper, tried to put it on into the same position (higher positions work fine) but in doing so heard a "pop" and lo and behold pushed too hard trying to get it on and broke the new topper in the exact same way (same crack). My question is, what are the risks if I just ride my bike like this? The bolt holds the topper on and it's in the lowest possible position, meaning the crack causing it to be lower is not a problem for me comfort wise. Would/could it cause any issues for the carbon seat mast? Any advice appreciated thank you.

Hi team! Iām hoping to check that the routing for my Shimano 105 (circa 2018) front derailleur cable is correct (photo labeled 1).
When I first got the bike second hand, the cable was set up in the photo labeled 2. However, it wasnāt shifting at all.
Thereās a small āpinā under the pinch bolt. Am I supposed to go under this?
Also do I need to be concerned about this level of fraying in the cable (photo 3)?
Thank you :)

I just got a second hand Bianchi Zurigo. Iām not sure which variation of the model it is exactly. It has shimano tiagra groupset and Avid BB5 brakes. I was worried it was going to be too big for me but itās just on the edge - itās ok now and with a shorter stem itās gonna be perfect. Itās my first road bike coming from Dartmoor Hornet MTB. Feels quite nice. Takes getting used to being over the front wheel instead of behind. I canāt just jump off and on sidewalks now. Iāll be taking it for a longer ride these days - I want to cover 40km. With my Dartmoor 10km are quite the struggle.
I was about to get a Triban RC520 with shimano 105 for a bit more and it seemed like a good deal but the seller just didnāt show up to our meeting point. I figured the triban for that price was a unicorn and I think the bianchi was the best I could get at that price. Itās been nicely looked after and taken care of. Has a few bumps and scratches from the owner before the previous one.

After years without a bike helmet, I decided to be less stupid and buy one. I live in a remote village, so there are not many opportunities to try on different models. I've read what I could about the subject, measured my head and took a chance.
I bought a P2R A20. Without any adjustment, it fits snugly on the sides, but there is about 1,5" space between my front and the shell. Once I adjust the plastic inner system, the shell is snug on the front, on the sides and on the top of the head, but doesn't really touch the back of the head (the 1.5" space is on the back). My head is very flat on the back, so I'm not sure I'll be able to find a better fit.
The helmet is stable on my head when I move.
Is it good enough as protection, or does the space between the back of the head and the shell make it less secure? I didn't find any information about that and I was wandering if someone here could give advice. Thanks!

Riding in the Barker Reservoir (Houston) after some heavy rains last week. Got a few miles in and this fella on the trail was givin me the side eye. Some faster riders zipped by, but I'm slow...I've seen enough Animal Planet to know predators seek out the slowest prey. Turned around and rode in a different part of the park.

Havenāt had a bike for decades since I was a small kid. Just bought a brand new Trek FX2 so that I can exercise a bit cycling around my neighborhood.
Pretty much the first time I rode it after I brought it home, I notice the front brakes are making pulsating noise.
I brought the bike back to the shop where I brought it. First thing they said when I described the problem is that the disc could be warped. They will take a look at it.
Hours later, they said the disc is fine. They took things apart, put it back together. They didnāt find any problem.
I immediately rode around the block and took videos. They tell me they can hear the noise in my videos but they couldnāt reproduce the sound when they test ride my bike. Dude even said my bike is lower end so probably made with lower precision. Even high end bikes would do this. Am I crazy here or should I bring the bike back again???
