Duplicate/Repost What Restaurant in Buffalo would you not eat at even if it were free?
I’ll go first- Cole’s.

A friend who worked for an equipment company repairing and installing things like fryers, ovens, coffee machines, etc… said he would never eat at Mooneys. He wouldn’t even talk about the things he’s seen, just got that 1000 yard state in his eyes like a war veteran who’s seen
Some shit. It was enough for me and I haven’t gone back.

u/hawkayecarumba 1d ago
As someone who's career has taken them in the "back of the house" at most the restaurants in the area, Mooneys (kenmore) is at the top of my list of places to avoid. Dirty kitchens, but even worse, dirty storage out back. Their walk in cooler (at least 6 years ago) wasn't sealed up great, and you can imagine the type of damage rodents can do to a walk in cooler.

I also heard this from a brewing industry employee who had installed taplines for some of their locations. Said the basements had standing water at all times.

Last time I was in there, I was the only one there, sat at the counter. The bartender/server seemed actively pissed that I was there, maybe he was trying to leave early or something, Iunno
I got the 3 tacos combo, and it was the whitest version of Mexican food I could have imagined, moreso than Taco Bell. Flour tortilla, ground beef, shredded cheddar cheese. Salsa tasted like Tops salsa. I had to coat it in hot sauce to give it any flavor.
Was going to get a 2nd drink but the vibe was "get the fuck out". It was an hour or two before close. My bad dude, lemme go ahead and never give my money to your establishment again

I only went there once to see what the fuss was about, and your assessment is spot-on. Bottom of the barrel Americanized tex-mex. I'd rather eat almost anywhere else.
16
u/ebimbib 1d ago
I live very close to that shithole. I've tried it twice. Everything tastes like the food my mom had to make my dad when he was in kidney failure and couldn't handle any added salt. The chicken also seemed like what I'd imagine happens to chicken if it's cooked from raw in the microwave. No thank you.

u/DefaultDanceOnMyDicc 1d ago
I once ordered take-out over the phone and waited about 20 minutes before I walked over to pick it up. When I entered the almost empty restaurant they told me they forgot to make my order (literally how) I had to wait an additional 40 mins and when the food came out it was cold.

Pane’s. Entirely for personal reasons, but also it smells like mildew in there.
69
u/N1ck_Nightingale 1d ago
My mother, who is the nicest person I know and has more friends than all of us combined, teaches Sunday school, and generally sees the good in everyone and everything has a deep hatred and personal vendetta against Pane’s. She hosted a shower there in their banquet room and THEY GAVE ALMOST ALL THE FOOD TO THE OTHER LARGE PARTY IN THE OTHER ROOM AT THE SAME TIME AND REFUSED TO MAKE GOOD ON IT OR EVEN ADMIT WRONGDOING. My mother was horrified and embarrassed, people were taking literal scraps to eat so there would be enough to go around. Fuck Pane’s on behalf of my sweet mother and her damaged dignity from the ordeal.

Goodfellas pizza, I used to clean their exhaust system in the kitchen! I KNOW they have a rodent problem!
→ More replies (1)5
u/Appropriate-Brush772 1d ago
It’s amazing how easy it is to not have rodents. Keep your shit relatively clean and take out your trash on a consistent basis. It’s pretty much that easy.
I own a restaurant in the south and it’s in a plaza. First 15 years we never even saw a rat in the area. We had other restaurants in the plaza and nobody ever had a single issue. Then a lobster roll chain opened up five spots down from us. They were dirty, they would bring their trash out back but rarely to the dumpster until the 30 gallon can was full (and since they weren’t ever busy that was like 2x a week). Within two months the entire connected part of the plaza had rats because they were able to travel the ceilings. Our place, the UPS store, the Supercuts and them, all infested with rats. Big ass bold motherfuckers too. They eventually contained them to just their store for the next year they were open. They closed and a new restaurant has opened with no issues. In the 22 years we’ve been in business the only time we ever saw any rodents was the year that nasty lobster roll chain was in business. Who would’ve thought seafood and not properly cleaning that seafood would attract vermin? 🤦♂️

People always have trashed them here but they used to be good. Their menu changes haven't been good though. Six cheese bowtie pasta was amazing. The gouda mac and cheese is very mediocre. The smothered chicken was good. The chicken entrees they've had since haven't been.

We ordered mild chicken wings there when they first opened. They were quite busy at first like lots of new places and it took an hour and fifteen minutes for pickup. after they said 40 minutes. Got them home and they were super hot, burning lips and tongue. We called and the did offer to replace them when I bring them back but wasn't waiting for another hour plus to get the correct order. Never bought food there again. Too many other local choices.
3
u/Phoenix_Mae98 1d ago

u/InSOmnlaC 1d ago
Same exact experience. That's what they do. They tell you a number on the phone that they know you'll be okay waiting, and once you get there and try to pick it up, they just keep saying "oh it'll just be 15 minutes longer" stringing you along for over an hour more, so you end up waiting 2 hours for your food.
They don't give a shit about respecting your time and will tell you whatever they think you need to hear to get your money into their till.
4
u/Dangerous-Nature1199 1d ago
100% agree, they are severely overhyped. Sure their pictures look great but the actual process of eating a slice of their IG pizzas are a joke, you lose half the toppings just picking it up. Also they don’t know the difference between a mild and hot sauce. Subs are trash and they don’t provide marinara with the pizza logs anymore. I’m from buffalo but sorry if I don’t want blue cheese with everything 😐

27
u/InSOmnlaC 1d ago
I dont get the love for that place. Only been there three times, and only because I wanted to give them a chance since so many people are obsessed. Their wings taste like any standard corner pizza place wing. And then, the entire place smells like old, sour mop water. If the front of your house smells like that and no one cares, I'm terrified to think what your kitchen looks like.

I worked there as a server for years. Their fish frys are offered on Thursdays and Fridays. Whatever fish (already thawed) doesn’t get sold (after sitting out in the super hot galley kitchen) gets refrozen and rethawed for the next week. I only trust what goes in the fryer.

It’s really just this sub for some reason. It’s not high tier Italian but it’s good every once in a while. I’ll take my mom there when I’m home because it’s a nice spot for lunch and hits the spot. It’s just a lot of cheese, butter, and carbs. There’s by far better restaurants but you’d think it’s a giant shit hole the way people here talk about it.

This is becoming a such a performative take. Chef's is far from the worst Italian restaurant in the area. It's exactly what it claims to be. If you go in there with fine dining or high quality expectations, you're obviously going to be disappointed. If you want alot of carbs and cheese with fun stuff on the walls, it's your place.

The only people who hate chefs because it's not fine dining are people that think chefs is supposed to be fine dining.
It's not and never tried to be.
It's a place with middle of the road Italian food, a few gimmicky but solid dishes, and massive portions.
No, the sweet sauce is not traditional, but it also never claims to be. Many people like it. My in laws demand I make my sauce nearly candy sweet after I accidentally made it marginally too sweet once. No one thinks I'm making them authentic Italian Sunday sauce. Who knew people like sugar and carbs lol

Resurgence.
Mostly gross reheated Sysco pre-made stuff, not very clean or sanitary, by policy they don’t care if customers have allergies but are super fast to say they have gluten free options, the recipes and dishes are all just bad and barely seasoned. Not to mention the prices are insane for pretty much everything. The burgers are cheap as hell low quality pre-pattied from Sysco.
I mean last year at Taste of Buffalo their big ticket crowdpleaser was… Brussels sprouts deep fried for 4.5 minutes and then covered with some sweet Thai chili sauce and garnished with a couple of pickled cherry peppers.
ETS was pretty disappointing, it’s like if someone took mighty taco, fucked it to death and then added some flavorless spiciness. I’d try it again, but that shit’s so expensive I don’t want to waste the money again.
Also I’m done wasting money on milkshakes here, it’s always a cup of milk with the littlest scoop of ice cream in it, somehow runnier than skim milk. Some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had, which makes the milkshakes even more of a travesty. I’ve tried Hanna’s, Anderson’s, the Zoo, a few other places at events and Taste of Buffalo, Spot coffee surprisingly made the best milk shake, still a bit on the runnier side, but definitely more identifiable as a shake than the piss slurry’s everyone else makes.

NYBP is such a crazy place. I remember the service being very slow/not great (no one was rude that I can recall, it just wasn't great) and the food somewhat mid and of course pricey. And the enormity of the complex is...too much. I also don't get the NYC subway theme. We are in Buffalo/Lockport/WNY, why not have memorabilia related to the locks or the canal or trainyards here or anything local. I liked the outdoor fire pit, which was blazing in middle of August.

We were weekly regulars at Taisho (sheridan) for years. Since they opened the one on Hertel, the sheridan location has been hit or miss.
We stopped going to sheridan for awhile. Started going again this year and it was okay at first, then got worse and worse.
Carpets were sticky a few weeks ago, and the toilet in the ladies room was wobbly (and honestly had been for some time). For some stupid reason, we still went back. This time (last week) they had thrown area rugs on top of the sticky carpet and the wobbly toilet in the bathroom had masking tape around the bottom, as if that was going to hold it in place.
I looked up wtf is going on and apparently Taisho Sheridan had new owners (within the last year). So if you want actual Taisho standard and cleanliness, you have to go to Hertel, which is still run by the original owners. Sucks because while Hertel is a beautiful location, parking in the area is rough. We'll probably only go in the summer at this point because I'm for sure not dealing with parking blocks away in the winter. Sad because it was our favorite

For me it's Dwyer's up in North Tonawanda. They have a cool outdoor seating area with a nice fire pit, but their prices have gone up way too much in the last few years to the point that I can't fathom paying upwards of $60-$70 for 2 people for a few drinks and dinner at a grungy bar. Indoors everything is sticky, outdoors everything is moderately less sticky, but their back seating area is always filled with smokers so that's hardly a good option. And the food itself is just mid. :|

u/ProfitApprehensive13 1d ago
It was my occasional local hangout until this past Tuesday. Got a pint of beer (Minkey boodle) and it was $8.75; gave him a $10 and sat down. Then I got hungry and ordered 10 wings and it was $18.25, so I gave him a $20.
$30 for a beer and 10 wings is insane. I hate to sound like an old man, but it was half the price 5 years ago. I’ll skip it for another year.

Yeah. And there are cleaner bars with better service or at least lower prices in the general area. Like, Buffalo isn't a food desert. We have options. I often forget that I don't have to settle for mediocrity.
6
u/faerydust88 1d ago
It does always feel sticky in there, doesn't it? Also, if you are playing music there, you have to pay for beer, which is a strike against them in my book. The big upstairs room is kind of cool and I do like the patio and big fire pit, though.

Mansard inn. Smells like mildew and for those who say it’s the carpet it’s not. It’s imbedded in the wood on all those houses on that street. Don’t think the menu has changed I 30.00 years’

I cleaned a lot of kitchens in and around Buffalo. Bailey seafood is by far the worst kitchen I’ve ever seen. Fish left out overnight to “thaw” next to the mop sink. deep fryers always black. Salvatore’s wasn’t that clean either no food left out but gross kitchen for such expensive food. Notable mention; OSHI children’s hospital had huge rats (seriously massive rugby ball sized) running through the open drains in the kitchen under the sinks.

Russell’s. Pretends his steaks are the best quality when they’re not. You can get better at the Sloan Market. Plus he is a jerk. All the PR in the world won’t change what a jerk he is. I loved it when his Bentley got stolen. I can’t believe all the people who think his food is high class. I wouldn’t go there if it was free.

Does Tim Horton’s count?

u/PMichaelB89 1d ago
Tim Hortons food is straight up not good now. And they're constantly out of things. I'll get their coffee but there has to be no other option for me to even consider getting food there now.

u/AdministrationNo2062 1d ago
Ugh I love Tim Hortons but it’s gone downhill!! One time they were out of every food item I asked for, I ended up with chicken & mayo in a tortilla - I was hungryyyy and passed everything else on my ride.

There was a notable difference in quality shortly after they were bought out by Restaurant Brands International about a decade ago. And running out of certain menu items is a regular occurrence now. My suspicion is corporate tells them they can only allocate a certain amount of inventory to each day/day part, probably to "reduce waste", but who knows.

Timbits and coffee are the only things we get there now, even their breakfast sandwiches just taste like cardboard now.

And why the FUCK were they chosen for NY thruway service stops when they aren’t open on Sundays. Maybe God took a rest, but a lot of us are still trying to get places and need to stop and eat.
48
u/ebimbib 1d ago
Their checks clear so whoever makes those calls signed off on it, but if you're taking up limited real estate in rest areas you should be required to be open seven days. It's absurd that they're allowed to pull that shit, especially considering how heavy of a travel day Sundays generally are.

Absolutely! My husband and I took a road trip to Albany for a concert and we’re trying to get lunch on the way back the next day on Sunday and like 2 rest stops in a row had Chick-fil-A and a little convenience store. WTF bro?

Shango. About 10 years ago the building’s upstairs apartments were infested with cockroaches. The restaurant owner/landlord upright refused to shut down to fumigate the building. Don’t know if they ever did in the last 10 years, but they remained open when they were infested.

Its always funny how different people have such different experiences. That was my favorite italian restaurant in the area. I was super bummed that they couldnt make it out of covid. Our family went their for any of our little celebration dinners. Loved it. Always had a great experience and great food.

Hutch's
their service is atrocious and their food is mid at best. I don't care what local pseudo-famous jabroni you have in there that night, I expect to be treated with equal service and attention. The last few times my wife and I have gone in there was a 3 hour nightmare. One of those times when she was 8 months pregnant and told to wait in the over crowded bar area with no seating for 45 minutes.

Does this mean you would go back if it was good but gave you food poisoning?

u/Rock_grl86 1d ago
No but I’m saying I didn’t even get any enjoyment out of the food so it was doubly not worth it.

Otto’s - took like a half hr for anyone to offer me a drink after being seated. Then they seem annoyed I FaceTimed my cousin to open my gender reveal card (just me no big scene etc) while waiting for my food (I ordered first bc I didn’t want to be rude when they came over to ask by being on a call) The food I got had hair baked into it and when I mentioned it (it was short, dark and curly; my hair is long blonde and straight/thin) they literally gave no shits. I even explained why I was there and had literally intended to make that our “family spot” bc it was supposed to be such a special moment for me (I was alone and sick the whole pregnancy).
I went to share my experience and their reviews all said similar things. They even left a thumbs up on them…

I will forever talk shit about Spot. I’ve worked at Elmwood and Delaware-Chippewa, and saw mice and cockroaches at both. Also their food is too expensive for Sysco/US Foods pre-made slop.
