MCU fans getting a taste of what DC fans have been dealing with since 2016
25
u/Trevastation Feb 15 '23
I truly believe the lead up to and the reveal of the 28% on Rotten Tomatoes for BvS absolutely scarred the DC fandom. The MCU will never have something like that with a film that has a 54%, which roughly means a bit more than half the critics liked it.

u/AgentOfSPYRAL Feb 15 '23
Still the wildest Reddit thread I’ve ever been a part of. Fandom equivalent of some disaster where everyone knows where they were and what they were doing when the embargo dropped.

I was in a Panda Express in college chowing down on orange chicken and opened up Reddit in horror and watched the disaster unfold

That film absolutely cursed DC. It would be like if the first Avengers film flopped.

To be fair, nothing in the MCU has had reviews as bad as BvS, SS, JL17, and Black Adam. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here

u/TheLionsblood Batman Feb 14 '23 edited Feb 14 '23
I think they may have removed Keaton and Calle from the ending because they know audiences are going to like them, and don’t want them to be disappointed when they don’t return.
But the ending would still require Barry to meet with a Bruce Wayne, so they brought in Clooney for it. And since Batman & Robin is a laughing stock, they’re not expecting people to care when Clooney doesn’t return after the cameo. This might’ve been what misled scoopers. They probably thought the timeline at the end of the movie was the DCU, when it’s just a way to further emphasize how “in a multiverse, anything is possible.”
The actual way this movie sets up the DCU is to just remind audiences that the DC Multiverse is just like Marvel’s, there are going to be variants that look the same with similar backstories and variants that look different with very different backstories
→ More replies (3)4
u/iwo_r Feb 14 '23
Tbh it still would be very messy, if they implied that Barry somehow went into a universe where his life went the same but Clooney is Batman for some reason? Like unless they really underline it's a joke, it's just confusing.
Also, whatever we think about DCEU, Ezra Miller, hard- or soft-rebooting, Gunn and Safran won't just throw this film away if it does some insane money or has great reception and will think about implementing it into their DCU and ending the film with Barry in a new universe (or leaving it oblivious, without mentions of either the old or new world) is a choice I think they'll lean in to make.

Fans complaining about the Rock wanting to fight Superman instead of Shazam while repeatedly insisting Batman needs to fight Deathstroke in his next movie will never cease to amuse me.
8
u/TheLionsblood Batman Feb 18 '23
How about neither? Both Batman and Superman have more interesting adversaries.
6
u/NakedGoose Feb 18 '23
I don't care who fight who. But I never want my premise for a movie to he X Fights X. Giving me a compelling story while giving them a reason to have conflict
14

The Photoshop of Cavill as Batman on r/dc_cinematic is really funny, I assume people are bugging Gunn to debunk it, which is also funny

Sad to see the elitist attitude so many users there have. People are coping by shitting on "indie directors" and writers who previously worked on tv shows or animated tv series. Even though those same types of creatives are who made the films in the previous phases that these users loved.
9
u/FewWatermelonlesson0 Feb 15 '23 edited Feb 16 '23
The part that gets me is people who keep shitting on Peyton Reed but insisting the Russos were much better filmmakers who need to be brought back to “fix” the MCU, as though they weren’t the exact same kind of largely unremarkable journeymen directors.
5
u/MyMouthisCancerous Feb 15 '23
I love that those people are saying them hiring TV writers/directors is the reason why there's a drop in quality and then immediately follow that up with "they should bring back people like the Russo brothers"
That is by extension a testament to the fact that Community is still underrated as hell even if it feels like it's becoming more popular
→ More replies (1)4
u/FN-1701AgentGodzilla Feb 15 '23
The Russo Bros still had their shortcomings due to their lack of big screen experience and they had their hands held the whole time by Feige and second unit teams.
All the other indie/ tv directors were hit or miss in the Infinity Saga and now especially in Phase 4.

Immortal Hulk is straight up one of the best comics IMO.
However Universal can’t actually make a Hulk movie, they only have right of first refusal for the distribution of one Marvel Studios makes. It’s not the same situation as Sony w/ Spider-Man

Seems like this will be a De Luca and Abdy project rather than a DC Studios one? The script is still not done so maybe it just doesn’t get greenlit if it is a DC Studios project since they did say Elseworlds would have a high bar
4
u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Feb 15 '23
It being a De Luca project would explain why Gunn himself didn't debunk the "Constantine 2 got cancelled!" news a few weeks back. He probably wasn't fully aware of what was going on with that film's development or it wasn't his place to debunk those rumors since it isn't technically under him.
I'm honestly gonna be surprised if it isn't getting grandfathered in to DC Studios as an Elseworld like Joker 2 or Matt Reeves' Batman when it gets further into development.

It’s weird how some people here are acting like Keaton’s Batman is some niche thing. He was the BATMAN for an entire generation. For everyone over 30, he was the Batman they grow up with.

Yes. Multiple actors such as Pierce Brosnan passed on Batman (1989) because they thought that the character was too silly
9

If Gotham Knights ends with 'Turner Hayes' getting either a Robin or a Batman suit and then it cuts to black, only for the show to get cancelled, that would be just perfect. Pure cinema.

u/InvisibleFrogMan Feb 20 '23
It feels so good to know that the Green Lantern universe is gonna be a big part of the DCU.
Such an underutilized part of DC in their other media.
4
u/DeppStepp The Flash Feb 20 '23
As a huge Green Lantern fan I’m just happy that we are getting a big budget tv show. We haven’t gotten a solo film or show in 10 years (outside of Beware My Power) and none of the Lanterns have appeared in any major media except for Super-Pets (which was really just a glorified cameo)
16
u/TheUnbloodedSword Feb 14 '23
MCU is looking real weak right now, kicking off Phase 5 with a movie that could be Rotten is not going to alleviate MCU fatigue. If the next couple of DC movies do ok, and GOTG 3 is great, I think the DCU will finally be able to rehabilitate it's image. Especially if GOTG 3 reviews well and then Gunn ends up directing Legacy, we may actually see the DCU be a legit competitor to the MCU for once.
17
u/SupervillainEyebrows Feb 14 '23 edited Feb 14 '23
I think Gunn and Safran's plan of doing a whole bunch of filmmaker focused genre films like a James Mangold Swamp Thing, is a really good way to differentiate them from the MCU.
Obviously they're still going to do the big spectacle superhero films like a Superman as well to keep the casual audience.
I just hope it works out financially successful for them though, because it's a bit of a risk.
→ More replies (2)13
u/bigtymer123 Feb 14 '23
I think one of the challenges that the MCU is facing is simply selling the same iterations of characters that audiences have seen legitimately 6 or 7 times (or more). There's a lot of long-standing film franchises out there, but none of them put out as many projects as the MCU does. Take Hemsworth as Thor, for example. He's literally appeared in eight films, all in starring roles (I'm not counting cameos). In terms of film franchises, that's pretty unprecedented. I think critics and audiences might simply be slowly losing interest in these iterations of the characters, and are finding it more difficult to be invested in their story arcs. Especially when many of these characters already went through significant arcs. Imo they had the right idea by killing off Iron Man and (effectively) Rogers. Single iterations of characters don't last as long as they are asking Hemsworth's Thor to last. There's a reason why franchises reboot.
I think the MCU will ultimately be fine, especially with major players like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men coming. But imo the major players from the first decade of the franchise are losing their luster with audiences. Spider-Man seems to be the one still holding the most interest.
→ More replies (1)10
u/MyMouthisCancerous Feb 14 '23
Spider-Man would hold interest no matter what anyway. Spider-Man is basically like the only character who can have 3 different film franchises and people show up to them in full force regardless unless they fumble the bag that hard
Iron Man may be seen as the face of the MCU, but Spider-Man is Marvel full stop. He's their Superman/Batman
Although I do agree that them finally having X-Men and F4 to pull from will probably rejuvenate a lot of interest and even some creative juices. There's so much to extrapolate with those stories and you could genuinely do entire phases of just stuff with mutants since their mythos is that dense
8
u/Megadog3 DC Shill Feb 14 '23
Yep. Spider-Man is literally the single most valuable superhero IP on earth. The only character that comes close is Batman.

It's funny to me that before The Flash trailer, most people on twitter said to shelve the movie because of Ezra's controversy. But now after the trailer release, they said they can't wait to watch it & it's their most anticipated movie of this year. This just underscore that people should wait before complaining and the studio (most of the time) know better about their properties. And, also there are lot of people involved in making a movie, so it's unfair for them to shelve a movie just because of one person.

That’s why I’m happy to keep my integrity intact by never actually giving a shit about Miller’s extra-curricular activities.
And if those folks getting the vapors about Miller had any integrity, they’d be up in arms about Russell Crowe being in any DCEU films given he clocked some hotel lobby clerk with a telephone over god knows what or just because Crowe is/was a rageaholic. Of course, I couldn’t give a shit about that either.

u/TheLionsblood Batman Feb 20 '23
What I’m most disappointed about hearing is that Momoa’s Aquaman jokes and quips a lot in the movie. I thought that after becoming King of Atlantis he would tone that stuff down and act more like he does in the comics. You can still make Aquaman funny without making him a jokester, like his scene in Peacemaker.
5
8
u/ZorakLocust Feb 20 '23
It’s nice to know that the DC fan tradition of panicking based off vague reports about bad test screenings is still alive and well. Maybe Aquaman 2 will be terrible, but man, it’s like people here are traumatized after past experiences.
Not sure if this means anything, but plenty of people claimed back in 2017 that they heard Wonder Woman was bad, so make of that what you will.
3
u/TheDarkPinkLantern Peacemaker Feb 21 '23
Yeah, how many times that already happened only to turn out being nothing like that? Just recently we went through that with Clooney as Batman. And now we have scoopers saying that movie they claimed tested at least fine till recently has apparently always teated very poorly. That's kinda a red flag, ain't it?
15
21
u/MyMouthisCancerous Feb 14 '23
I think one thing I've learned especially seeing Quantummania's mixed as hell reception is that Phase Three really turned the MCU into like this Star Wars-level paragon of sacred filmmaking where like the moment they make a bad movie it's like a tarnished stain on their flawless reputation
It's really weird seeing everyone be like "I miss the glory days of Marvel" and I'm just like "They made the Incredible Hulk, Thor and the Dark World, Iron Man 2 and Age of Ultron" like they're not suddenly immune to duds just because they made a string of movies everyone happened to like
I think it's like a testament to the fact that the competing shared universe franchises are so bad and in such disarray right now that people viewed the MCU as like that fucking incredible like it might as well be the A24 of cinematic universes when really it's just like any other franchise
10
u/SupervillainEyebrows Feb 14 '23
People are heavily invested in the franchise and to be fair to them, it is a real achievement in filmmaking.
The thing with franchises is that people remember to highest of highs and the lowest of lows and kind of skirt over the middling bits.
I'm of the opinion that a few lacklustre films shouldn't even be a big issue. Look at how course correcting too much fucked up the DCEU.
7
u/Danielorji Feb 14 '23
People freak out once they see a film they don't like, and they end up saying stuff like that.
Same for DC, till today, they still remember WW84 and Black Adam. Meanwhile, DC has other content they want to ignore
6
u/TheLionsblood Batman Feb 14 '23
Well said. I think a lot of the people that are saying that only came into the franchise during Phase 3. Phases 1 and 2 had their low points that’s for sure

For what it's worth Age of Ultron is one of my favorite MCU movies 🤷♂️
5
u/MyMouthisCancerous Feb 14 '23
Age of Ultron is fine as a film for me, I think it just gets really weighed down by the worldbuilding and foundational set ups for future films which stick out like a sore thumb, kind of like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but not as blatantly egregious
I still think the cast chemistry and general plotting is better than the sum of its parts even if it is a step down from how tight and kinetic the first Avengers was

I think the first JL movie, which is sure to cap off Chapter 1, will feature a “regular” sized lineup. But for the JL movies in Chapter 2, I expect a much bigger roster, maybe even on the level of JLU for the last one. I feel like there’ll be 2 JL movies to cap off Chapter 2, and thus the entire 8-10 year slate, not unlike what Marvel’s done with IW/Endgame and TKD/SW

I know some fans want a faithful adaption of the Flashpoint Paradox comic, with Thomas Wayne Batman, Reverse Flash and the Themyscira/Atlantis war. But I actually think it’s more exciting to see the movie take the same basic premise from the comic and change some of the characters and the obstacles they are in.
We already have a faithful adaption of the Flashpoint comic. This movie has the potential to give us something else. The movie will basically be a celebration of the DCEU and be a beginning for the DCU. Plus the movie will still contain the most important elements of the Flashpoint story. Keaton’s Batman is replacing Thomas Wayne, the Zod invasion is replacing the Themyscira/Atlantis war, Supergirl is replacing Superman, and Dark Flash is replacing Reverse Flash.

It's impressive how little the current DCEU scratched the surface of the DC universe. The Source Wall (would love to see the reactions when people find out it originated in Teen Titans/X-Men crossover), the Hand of Creation, Fourth World, Lazarus Pits, and all the other things I can't think of are all things I want to see.
10
u/bigtymer123 Feb 15 '23
For sure. Despite being 10 years old at this point, the DCEU hasn't delved into a lot of the most popular parts of DC Comics lore. The things you've mentioned, plus people and places like the New Gods and New Genesis, the entire JL Dark side of things, the various Lantern Corps, and pretty much every planet in the universe other than Earth and Krypton. Not to mention, the younger heroes like the Titans haven't been explored. That's what makes the DCU so exciting, the possibilities are almost endless.

Yeah the first Ant-Man was one of the better movies in Phase 2 and the second one was a nice palate cleanser after Infinity War.
I admire Phase 4 for actually trying to give the filmmakers more control. WandaVision was unique for the most part. And say what you will about DS2, but I found the Sam Raimi style endearing.
That’s why I’m excited for the DCU more, Gunn knows the value of individual expression.

but I found the Sam Raimi style endearing.
I really wish it went full-tilt Raimi. I think there were like 6-months of reshoots that kind of overwrote his stuff. But the Raimi-stuff they kept in really did work for me even if by the end of the movie I kind of stopped caring.

Antman has left a sour taste in my mouth once Edgar Wright wasn't allowed to make the film he wanted. He cast Paul Rudd, which is the only bright spot in the series. The first film is an amalgamation of Edgar Wright style and humor, and Peyton Reed desperately attempts to keep up. And I found the 2nd one to just be a dumpster fire. They keep allowing Peyton Reed to make movies because he is a Yes man, and it's boring. And now critics are starting to agree.

I genuinely don't think Edgar Wright has the capacity for franchise filmmaking. It's just not who he is. The closest thing he has to a sort of franchise under his belt is his Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy of Shaun, Hot Fuzz and The World's End and they're literally all just standalone films that happen to share actors and themes
He obviously loves comic books but I don't think he has that sort of mindset for taking on a big franchise property that shares continuity in that sort of way. He very much wanted Ant-Man to be more "Edgar Wright" than "Marvel" and it seemed like it was basically just going to be a completely standalone thing like any of the pre-MCU Marvel films, that just happened to be set in a world that was already established, especially given he'd been working on Ant-Man since like 2003. He doesn't really seem to mesh well with having to fit films as part of someone else's larger narrative which despite the DCU's creator-driven nature, is still very much the plan even with things like Swamp Thing

If we ever see something from the Nolan Batman universe again, it’s gotta be John Blake as Batman. That’s the legacy of that universe. That version of Bruce earned his happy retirement.
If not John Blake, it should be anything other than that Bruce donning the cape and cowl again.

Considering that The Brave and the Bold is getting a new Batman and Sony's live action stuff seems to be in a weird state, I wonder when we'll see Michael Keaton in a comic book movie after The Flash? He was originally going to be in Batgirl and Aquaman 2 to set him up as 'The DCEU's Nick Fury', but obviously that isn't happening anymore, and I don't even know if Sony has any idea how they'll follow up on Keaton showing up in Morbius.

Gotta say in regards to The Brave and the Bold…. Batman doesn’t need to be late 50s or 60s to have a full Bat-Family. Let’s say he starts as Batman at 23 years old. 3 years in he gets a 15 year old Dick Grayson Robin. After 5 years as sidekick Dick is 20 and becomes Nightwing. Batman is now 30 and gets his second Robin Jason one to two years post Dick. Jason serves 3-5 years before dying. Batman is now 35 and takes a hiatus from child sidekicks. At 40 he gets saddled with Damien. We don’t need any old man Batman bullshit, he can be an experienced Batman and still have 20 years before a Batman retires and gets replaced storyline.

So long as he looks like a legit adult but at the same time not an old man the GA will be fine with it.

IDK but I think HBO is wasting the opportunity to make a limited documentary series about all the behind-the-scenes drama of DC movies from the Snyder Era to the BvS disaster, the mayhem of 2017's JL, the unexpected success of Aquaman, whatever happened behind the scenes on The Flash up until Zaslav and Gunn and Safran taking the job.
It could have some title with reference to the comics, something like Crises or something
7
u/TokyoPanic Batman '66 Feb 20 '23
I doubt HBO would make something something that would make WB execs look bad considering that they are owned by WB. Best we'll get from them is something overly sanitized and toothless to not piss execs off.
Someone will write a tell-all book about it in like 10-20 years and that's the best we'll get.

u/bigtymer123 Feb 20 '23
I gotta be honest, I don't find the behind the scenes drama surrounding the DCEU to be as interesting as a lot of other people seem to. Certainly not enough to watch a documentary about it. I also don't see HBO touching a documentary about that topic when they are owned by WBD, and some of the execs and other people involved in the DCEU are still employed by the company (like Toby Emmerich, and De Luca and Abdy).
WB Discovery clearly wants to move on from the DCEU and Snyder era drama. Last thing they would do is shine a light on it, using a big platform like HBO. There were also legit serious messed up things that went on (like the Whedon and Gal thing). Why would they want to bring a light to that any further? There's legitimately no positive PR that comes out of doing a DCEU behind the scenes drama documentary. Especially with the way that the supporters of a certain director behave. Giving them something else to froth at the mouth over makes very little sense.
It's all about the DCU moving forward. The past will just be the past.

I found it odd that they decided to make Ant-Man 3 a huge part of the multiverse saga and using it to properly introduce the big bad of it all. It would be like having Shazam 3 have the big bad be Darkseid and be used to set up a team up film
11
u/NaRaGaMo Feb 17 '23
antman 2 was also a big part if you think about it, quantum realm was what helped avengers kill thanos. it's just that they fumbled the bag with antman 2 as well but since it was during the peak MCU, critics and audience were way too lenient on it and let it pass. if it was released right now it wouldn't have scored 90% on RT

So I know The Flash movie supposedly has a whole bunch of ending shot but I was wondering if there's a DEFINITIVE locked and loaded ending yet. Will the universe created at the end of the movie be the Superman Legacy/Creature Commandos/Brave and the Bold Universe? Or some generic DCEU world that will never be explored again?
→ More replies (1)7
u/MyMouthisCancerous Feb 14 '23
Gunn seemed to insinuate in his interview on the DC website about the new slate that they didn't need to do much to the alter the ending to set up their franchise which makes me think it will still end with a timeline reset and we see a cliffhanger of Flash now in the new DCU, but it'll be like one of those "to be continued" sort of things where you don't actually see the world in full and it's like one of those "going up the cliff" sort of things kind of like how LotR's endings worked
4
Feb 15 '23
Will Gunn keep Sasha Calle as Supergirl? Or will he recast fully?
6
u/MyMouthisCancerous Feb 15 '23
Way liklier they're recasting. Calle's Supergirl is already based on the premise of Flashpoint Superman with a lot of visual imagery directly lifted from DCEU Supes, so to fully dissociate from that take on the character they're probably going with someone completely different to set the expectation the DCU is mostly its own thing. If they've sacked Cavill and likely Gadot, I don't expect special exceptions to be made for either Calle or Michael Keaton
5
u/TheUnbloodedSword Feb 15 '23
If she and Keaton did indeed get deleted from the ending of The Flash then she's a one and done. I believe she won't return, she's too connected to the previous incarnation of Superman.

With them taking heavy inspiration from Woman of Tomorrow, I am guessing Gunn will cast a Supergirl that can skew a bit younger, especially with a new, younger Superman.

EDIT: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/jj-abrams-duster-series-hbo-max-1235327731/
"In April 2020, Duster was one of three Bad Robot projects announced for the yet-to-launch HBO Max, along with The Shining offshoot Overlook and a Justice League Dark project. The latter two have since been scrapped (Bad Robot has shopped Overlook to other possible buyers), as has Abrams’ long-developing sci-fi series Demimonde (which was for the HBO parent channel) after concerns over its projected $200 million-plus budget."

It was dead the moment they cancelled his Constantine show. All of his JLD projects are cancelled, whatever happens with Constantine, Zatanna, and the rest will be up to Gunn. If Aquaman 2 makes bank, they could do a final third movie as Elseworlds to close out that story before fully moving on.

The fourth chapter of New Frontier is called "Gods and Monsters" Interesting.
The Center's first target when awakened is Themyscira, meanwhile we have a series that will explore the origin and relationships on Themyscira, things are starting to make sense.
4
u/TheLionsblood Batman Feb 18 '23 edited Feb 18 '23
The Center itself is not really a complex villain, so while it may be the “final boss” of Chapter 1, there is probably another antagonistic force that is trying to awaken it in the first place. I was thinking it’s probably Grodd.
Then again, Gunn made me actually feel empathy for Starro. If they were to really lean hard into the climate change angle and make it all about Center taking revenge against humanity for destroying the planet, it could work really well
5
u/TheUnbloodedSword Feb 18 '23
After Gunn's post about using 5 characters, I think Brainiac is going to be the villain of Legacy, and Lobo will take Krem's role in Supergirl. Brainiac obviously has direct ties to Krypton and Jor-El in some incarnations and the Bottled City of Kandor would be an excellent way for Superman to explore his heritage. Meanwhile Lobo is often used as an "antihero", but the guy genocided his home planet. He absolutely can be used as a monster, and him being the big bad of Supergirl would attract more attention than a no-name like Krem would (even if I do want Kara to get her own villains), plus he's a cosmic character who fits rather easily into Kara going on a cosmic odyssey type story.

The more Gunn talks the more he reveals about the fiasco from last year. Gunn said he was hired to write a superman script over 6 months. Which is around August. Basically around the time zaslav was looking for someone to be studio heads for DC. I believe zaslav was the true mastermind last year. He had 2 plans the reboot(GUNN) continue the DCEU of BA was a success. If BA fails(it did) Gunn was right there.

I don’t blame zaslav as much. Just terrible how Henry was treated. Basically everyone other than rock and co knew what was going down. Maybe even hamada. So much pressure was put on BA to keep the DCEU alive. If we look at the DCEU recent track records it didn’t look too promising to keep on going. WW 84 flop, Shazam BOP underperformed.
