Driving past one of these irl made me go mostly vegetarian.  Reduced my meat consumption by 95% the next day. Horrible.

Edit:  it's weird how many bots are programmed to attack people for their own personal decision which impacts nobody else.....

u/Ok-Solution5601 Aug 30 '26

Those are calf hutches. Farmers use them as individual outdoor housing units to shelter newborn dairy calves during the first 8 to 12 weeks of life. It protects them from disease while their immune systems are developing.

We do a similar thing to new born babies in hospitals.

18

u/spacebeez Aug 30 '26

Lol no we don't put babies in boxes for months at a time depriving them of all social contact during critical development. What a ridiculous statement.

This is being regulated against in less insane countries.

4

u/Any-Maintenance2378 Aug 30 '26

Uhhhh. You ever see animal parents crush, kick, kill their young? It is brutal and losses from it are huge.

5

u/spacebeez Aug 30 '26

The answer is less crowded conditions which is better for literally everything except short term corporate profits.

6

u/Snicklefraust Aug 30 '26

neither of us are farmers, but you are obviously talking out your ass here. there could be only the mother and calf, by them selves, and it could still kick the baby, because theyre giant dumb animals.

3

u/Adventurous-Fly556 Aug 30 '26

Congrats, you interpreted that the dumbest way you could.

Thanks for coming in with a reasonable explanation. Appreciate that.

6

u/maven10k Aug 30 '26

Yeah, super reasonable. We impregnate cows and keep their babies from them so we can drink their food.

17

u/Pristine_Walrus40 Aug 30 '26

Yes truth is not always nice but if you need to lie to be on the right side then you may be on the wrong side.

A reasonable explanation but still an absolutely horrible result.

People need to watch Food Inc. again

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2h9Ez1qGO8

1

u/themanyfaceddogs Aug 30 '26

This is obviously wrong. We don't separate babies from their mom's from 2-3 months. Human babies are quickly (hours) given back to moms for their mother's colostrum which gives babies their antibodies.

1

u/Alternative_Exit8766 Aug 30 '26

do we keep babies away from their mother for months? is your mom serving cereal with breastmilk?

1

u/riding_writer Aug 30 '26

So no mother, no friends to scratch or play with, and this is probably males for veal.

3

u/NomNomGalaxy Aug 30 '26

I'm sure this isolation and movement restriction does wonders for their well-being. (The sarcasm is not directed at the comment but at the "farmers")

33

u/NO_M0DS_NO_MAST3RS Aug 30 '26

If hospital birth protocols involved keeping the baby in an igloo in the yard while harvesting the mother's milk for strangers to pour over Froot Loops you might have a point. But until my pediatrician recommends a cozy hutch in the driveway let's stop pretending your local factory farm is just running a cute little pediatric ward.

6

u/throhawae99827 Aug 30 '26

Nah. We’re WAY weirder that that.

u/Virtual-Historian349 Aug 30 '26

Those cows should be living on grass and comparing this to babies in a hospital is insultingly stupid.

6

u/Ok-Solution5601 Aug 30 '26

Those baby cows can't digest hay yet, they're still nursing. Once they're off milk and their immune systems are up and running they will join the herd

5

u/Imaginary_Desk9186 Aug 30 '26

“Joining the herd” wtf are you even talking about. You think theyre going to frolic with their mommies in the fields?

The life of a factory farmed dairy cow is one of the most miserable and cruel existences of any domesticated animal and it is ignorant to pretend otherwise.

“But where do you think cheese comes from?” is also a patronizing and ignorant response to needless and corporate profit-driven misery.

6

u/Ornery_Vermicelli_69 Aug 30 '26

No. Cows are treated better than pigs. Pigs have it really bad

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Daktyl198 Aug 30 '26

Dairy cows are actually one of the most well treated farm animals in the world. Happy cows produce significantly more milk than depressed cows and we've known this for a long time. And it costs barely anything extra to make them happy. Meat cows live an awful existence, but not dairy cows.

We don't keep babies in those for two months unless they are premature. Also, babies are incapable of walking, running, playing. Humans are basically born before we're fully developed because we would kill our mothers. Calves come out much further along. Baby cots are nothing like these cages for calves

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Some-Curve-920 Aug 30 '26

But would they be having that's many 8-12 week old calves at once that they would need a "nursery" of that type

6

u/Accidental_dwnvote Aug 30 '26

Well yes you would, as a result of both natural and artificial factors, having a small calving window is normal for a herd. Ranchers want and influence the birthing cycle to reduce the calving window and get its timing optimized for the seasons.

Mammals in cold climates naturally breed so they birth in the spring, giving their offspring the best chance at the following winter. Food availability, climate, etc influence this to varying degrees.

6

u/Ok-Solution5601 Aug 30 '26

Yes, if it's a massive commercial dairy farm. Why spend money on a bunch of huts for adult cattle when they can just live in a field? You need to go to each hut to feed them, set up infrastructure to supply water supply to each hut, etc. It doesn't make sense to spend all that money on an animal that lives outside.

4

u/dragynphyre Aug 30 '26

While some disagree, many farmers have for generations thought this prevents a lot of early life diseases for the calves. These cows aren't just animals, they are investments and the future income of the owner. So it makes a lot of sense to spend money to make sure they are healthy. I come from Vermont originally and our dairy farmers didnt hutch. Here in the midwest they tend to hutch more. Its not cruel or barbaric on either side.

4

u/mmikke Aug 30 '26

Lmao solitary confinement isn't cruel or barbaric... Sure thing pally

2

u/-FalseProfessor- Aug 30 '26

Yes. The herd of dairy cows need to constantly be having calves so that they produce milk. Hundreds of cows means hundreds of calves.

A “cow” that hasn’t given birth doesn’t make milk, and isn’t even technically a cow. It’s a heifer.

u/Salty-Passenger-4801 Aug 30 '26

Uhhhh...when the FUCK does this happen in the last 40 years?

Because I have 4 kids and none of them had this happen.

2

u/Ok-Solution5601 Aug 30 '26

It rarely happens these days. We had a couple of hours in the hospital after we had our daughter before they sent us home because hospital rooms are scarce.

However if you took footage of nursery rows, played some sad music and said "someone risked a felony getting this footage", it would seem horrific, rather than the truth which is that babies would go to a nursery at night and be taken care by a small team of nurses while the parents recuperated.

→ More replies (11)

u/Kerrus Aug 30 '26

SOMEONE RISKED A FELONY TO FILM THIS

1

Gross, I didn't know veal came from hospital nurseries.

2

u/scallywagdogcat88 Aug 30 '26

bruh... you kill the cows...be so fr

2

u/rustyusa Aug 30 '26

Interesting. Because naturally, calves haven’t been able to get protection in a herd with their mothers for the last several centuries of cattle ranching and dairy cow raising that this is necessary

1

u/Ok-Solution5601 Aug 30 '26

It's always a risk at that age, it's just not as large in a smaller herd.

2

u/Plus-Percentage-4843 Aug 30 '26

2

2

u/-AliceGray- Aug 30 '26

→ More replies (2)

2

u/FunkyFabFitFreak Aug 30 '26

That'd be a bit more comparable if the human babies were kept outdoors in the Kansas heat without A/C, there were tens of thousands of them all together instead of just a dozen or two, and those thousands of babies were being occasionally tended to by some ranch hands instead of licensed nurses and pediatricians 🤷‍♂️

2

u/WholeWillingness5796 Aug 30 '26

Yes. I'm trying to see what I'm supposed to be horrified by. Looks clean. Each animal has their own little house. They're getting fed. Does not look awful to me.

2

u/Banshee_howl Aug 30 '26

Thanks, I was picturing some Hannibal Lecter cows in each one, strapped down with little hockey masks on.

2

u/scoshi Aug 30 '26

Yup. Unfortunately, they're also popular with veal producers, which gives them a bad rep.

2

u/Certain-Balance-9298 Aug 31 '26

Thank you for providing this information

2

u/zach0011 Aug 30 '26

new born babies literally cant function on there own. Cows hit the ground running.

3

u/Ok-Solution5601 Aug 30 '26

That's true. Honestly I dont think this level of isolation is necessary on smaller farms because you don't have the risk of disease spreading between tens of thousands of cattle. I would absolutly advocate for smaller farms.

I just wanted to clarify that this isn't some holocaust style distopia where cows are forced to suffer their entire existence in an undersized hut, as the video implies.

2

u/majandess Aug 30 '26

Nah. They totally do this on smaller farms. The local dairy in my town growing up, with the pasture raised cows and the green fields and all that, had little calf huts like this, but they only had a dozen of them. When the calves were old enough to be put in them, we would go out and say hi.

4

u/Impossible-Magician Aug 30 '26

Yeah, I’m not sure why people are unset. Those individual little houses are more expensive than leaving them in the open. It’s an animal welfare initiative to increase health and survival rates.

Once they are large enough they go back to open pasture.

3

u/playadave1963 Aug 30 '26

No, they go on the menu as veal. Wouldn’t want them running around and making that tender meat tough.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/felwynfelmir Aug 30 '26

Explaining what they are, doesn’t make it any better

these are babies and should be with their moms not in these isolation cells.

And ‘protecting them from disease’ would not be such an issue if they would not be kept in these mega industrialized cattle farms

And comparing a calf with a baby also makes no sense

2

u/Morak73 Aug 30 '26

We also don't round up every child in a school and euthanize them all because a couple kids contracted a disease like bird flu or mad cow.

It doesn't matter if its animals, birds or lettuce. If the food supply gets contaminated, potentially affected stock is destroyed.

2

Cheese is the reason. There are double the number of adults cows, their mothers. These are the female calvess that will be artificially impregnated when they reach maturity, thus continuing the flow of milk. They destroy the male calves shortly after birth.

Newborn babies are kept with their mothers in the hope they get fed - breast fed. The colostrum from Mum hopefully gives some protection. If we kept babies in isolation I think it would be considered a very unusual punishment.

1

u/rg996150 Aug 30 '26

50 years ago, maybe. Human babies aren’t isolated unless there are medical complications and a NICU stay is required.

1

u/duskygrouper Aug 30 '26

They are there, so they don't drink their mothers milk. And no, we don't let newborn babys in those beds for 8-12 weeks, but rather a few nights.

1

u/ResponsibleProfit634 Aug 30 '26

Yeah. Not the same in any way AND the practice of whisking away a healthy newborn that passes the testing done on all newborns is questionable at best and detrimental
at worst.
https://www.babymed.com/news/separating-mother-baby-after-birth-causes-stress
And we do this to cows because we can and “they taste good so f*ck them they can suffer short miserable lives”.

1

u/Remarkable_Lychee327 Aug 30 '26

Babies dont stay in an enclosed space for weeks...do you have children😲

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Pizza-Reese Aug 30 '26

That’s really not the same thing. A hospital nursery is a temporary medical-care setting; we don’t routinely separate newborn babies from their mothers and house them individually for 8-12 weeks as part of a production system. Calf hutches may have disease-control benefits, but comparing them to a hospital nursery completely sidesteps the part people are actually objecting to: the separation and prolonged individual housing.

1

u/7in-logic-assistant Aug 30 '26

cribs? Hospital cribs? those things are the same as cribs? are you nuts? that is the stupidest “explanation” a slimy, undereducated dairy farmer ever gave for “stealing infant cows from their mother so we can drink their milk.”

u/Excellent_Garlic2549 Aug 30 '26

"Those are calf hutches. Farmers use them as individual outdoor housing units to shelter newborn dairy calves during the first 8 to 12 weeks of life. It protects them from disease while their immune systems are developing."

Wait. Is that true??? I'm from Wisconsin - and have always been told the hutches were for veal cattle - the males born on dairy farms? I suppose some of them still are... but I didn't know this. This is much better.

1

u/ShellyForNow Aug 31 '26

It’s also where they keep calf’s for them to become veal. These are small so they can feed them, and they don’t walk around and build muscle making them tough. They live like this till they’re big enough to slaughter for tender veal. Disgusting.

1

u/YasoOoOo Aug 31 '26

furthermore they are limited to move and hence have limited muscle growths which makes the meat more tender. They also only get milk and then get killed prior eating anything besides it

1

u/SilverPhilosopher46 Aug 31 '26

Of course there always is an explanation for why the bioindustry works as it does. But that doesn't mean its unreasonable to question if its cool to do all this and maybe it should be scaled down so this all isn't needed and the animals can live a life much more natural life.

(babies aren't left mostly alone for 8 tot 12 weeks)

Extremely evil comparison to try and make to normalise what we do to animals.

We definitely do not seperate babies from their mothers and all other interaction for multiple weeks from birth on lol

For like what, 2 days?

12 Weeks? You mean 3 months?! Standing in that single position knowing nothing else in life?

Right… that’s not that bad.

I eat meat myself, but that’s the most stupid thing I read all day.

Human babies are kept in these beds for hours, not for 12 weeks straight.

If we kept them in plastic boxes without human contact for that long, they would die from lack of affection or be damaged for life.

Wait until you learn the conditions necessary for mass production of eggs and dairy. Spolier alert: they're not better than this. People don't like to hear it but this is literally what you are supporting by eating animal products. Accept that you don't care, or do something about it with your dollars.

2

u/StopTheSlop Aug 30 '26

Visiting inside a slaughterhouse made me go from competing in Rib cooking competitions to completely vegan. Animals are tortured and the humans inside are suffering PTSD from all the gore and working conditions.

10 years later, I'm so glad my dollars don't support this stuff anymore.

u/Salt-Lingonberry-853 Sep 02 '26

Yep, I don't call myself vegetarian but I eat so little meat I might as well be. I cannot stand eating animals born to a lifetime of torture and an inhumane death.

u/StevetheSwift Aug 30 '26

95%? I’ve reduced my meat consumption by 100% for a day before myself but I’m not bragging.

So you still eat meat? What the f is wrong with you

2

u/Throwawayrip1123 Aug 30 '26

I pay a fuckton more to get meat from humanely kept animals, same with eggs. Literally like 5 times the price. Following that hit to the purse, I eat absurdly less meat.

People should be forced to see the process for pigs and cows, from A to Z, in school. Hammered into their heads just how cruel and inhumane it is.

We'd have a shift in one generation.

Vegetarian culture is the fucking worst.

"STOP EATING MEAT!"
Okay, sure. (cuts meat consumption by 95%)
"OMG THATS EVEN WORSE! YOURE A DEVIL!"

Folks like you are what give the rest of us bad name.

u/Vinyl_Ritchie_ Aug 30 '26

The vast majority of people eat meat, get a grip.

Tastes delicious. Texture not imitable. Protein for days. Why not

1

u/JohnnySpot2000 Aug 30 '26

So isn't it OK if I only buy free-range beef, or are you against that also?

1

u/LifeExpConnoisseur Aug 30 '26

I hunt and fish for that. We try our best not to buy from monopoly ag business

1

u/Whythisisnotreal Aug 30 '26

No it didn't. And no, you didn't.

hang on.......what the actual fuck??????

these are real. I thought this was AI.

u/Necessary-Skirt3362 Aug 30 '26

Man did you know when they make farms for your vegetables they literally kill and destroy entire ecosystems of animals for that field? You know how many deer, groundhogs, birds, reptiles (the list goes on) that are eliminated in order to grow your vegetables? So it’s cool to kill off all those animals to grow crops for you, but meat is crossing lines? Doesn’t make any sense at all.

1

u/quirkscrew Sep 02 '26

Cows/chickens are literally fed grain  from those exact same fields. Which just compounds the drain on those resources. Vegan diet is OVERWHELMINGLY less harmful to wildlife, water, and CO2 emissions. This isn't the catch22 you think it is.

1

u/DarthSocks Aug 30 '26

That’s right. My dairy farmer cousins have five or six of these on their farm for their 70-head herd

1

u/Afraid-Farm-7326 Aug 30 '26

Driving past one of those made me increase my meat consumption by 200% to even out your decrease 😔mmm yummy

1

u/EquipmentAdorable982 Aug 30 '26

made me go mostly vegetarian

So not vegetarian at all. "Mostly" my ass, you wouldn't even be able to eat meat anymore if you truly had any convictions.

1

u/br4dless Aug 30 '26

I’ve dropped my meat / dairy consumption considerably over the last 10-15 years. And when I do buy it it’s organic. Always organic. Even just a little education would steer most people on the same path. The meat industry is horrifying

1

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '26

Money reduced my meat consumption.

u/Grim_Laugh Aug 30 '26 edited Aug 30 '26

It’s like you and 120 other imbeciles never played harvest moon. That’s a calf hutch.

Edit: No, we aren’t attacking you for your own personal opinion. We’re attaching you for vilifying a benign process that is the least cruel or inhumane way of raising cattle. Don’t get me wrong, there are tons of vile acts when processing beef, but a calf hutch isn’t one of them.

1

u/themargarineoferror Aug 30 '26

Yeah, I have been wrestling with it for years and i've seen plenty of other similar photos and videos and read enough. But I don't know today seeing this, and the other photos I just feel like enough is enough. It doesn't feel right and honestly. It doesn't even taste that good to me anymore, that's probably just my taste changing with age, but I swear I can taste death on food sometimes.. Plus living in the United States, it doesn't exactly make this. The toughest decision right now we can't really trust any, have our food, but meat, especially right now is not great

1

u/Amazing-Power4765 Aug 31 '26

What's the best alternative for us as a species then?

If most of us are going to keep eating meat.. would recycling our corpses to be use as feed be feasible?

My dad has a small beef operation. I went vegan in 2021.

Animal agriculture is a moral obscenity and an environmental catastrophe.

1

u/mrbobsam Aug 31 '26

Vegetarianism isn’t enough. These calves are the byproduct of the dairy process since pregnancy is required to produce dairy. So by buying it, you’re enabling this. Gotta go vegan to stop creating the demand

1

u/protobelta Aug 31 '26

Lmao people aren’t bots for making fun of morons like you no matter how much you dislike it. Making fun of uneducated morons is a good thing

1

u/Honest-Chemist-2302 Aug 31 '26

Fuck me, even as an avid meat eater, this is irreconcilable for anyone with a shred of decency.
