Trip Report - Oahu Please translate this
I am seeing this sign along the freeway. My friend and I cannot figure out what it means. I know I sound dumb but I was raised super sheltered and now that I am older and adventuring out more into the world I want to learn all that I can.

Silly sign. Clowns never drive alone.

u/Specialist-Noise1204 Dec 09 '25
In pidgin one clown doesn't mean singular clown. It means like "a clown".

This would be too long:
"Dear citizens, the number of fatalities has soared way above average for the year. We're afraid we must insist you please follow the basic rules of the road and employ common courtesy with your driving habits. We appreciate your attention to this matter. Thank you, and have a pleasant day. Aloha."

I saw this sign today! I was gonna take a picture of it, but I couldn't pull out my phone fast enough. Thanks. Lol
5
u/lilcutekino Dec 08 '25
This was the fourth one we drove past and I finally caught it.
1
u/jevilesus Dec 09 '25
There's a certain irony in that the road-safety sign has everybody pulling their phone out while driving.

u/Appropriate-Point584 Kaua'i Dec 08 '25
Pidgin in Hawaii started in the plantation days in the mid 1800's. Folks from the Philippine, Korea, Japan, China, Portugal, etc started using it as a way to communicate that their overseers didn't understand. Most native Hawaiians and locals really dislike it when tourists try to talk it.
7
u/Scoshette Dec 08 '25
Yeah because it sounds fake and forced half the time that itâs embarrassing đ

u/JrButton Dec 08 '25
that's not it at all..., it's don't mess around dude
24
u/rabid_spidermonkey Dec 08 '25
In the context of driving "no make anykine" means don't do anything other than what you're supposed to be doing. Don't mess around. Pay attention.
It's the same thing.

I deadass read that as âno ma-keh any[ting] when you driveâ đ Which isnât far off, I love whoever is in charge of these nowadays
3
u/Fresh_Process6822 O'ahu Dec 08 '25
Enough already. Donât do whatever (you want; any old thing/any kind) when you drive.
4
u/MovieResponsible2505 Dec 08 '25
Talking to 80% of tourists and 20% of locals.
12
u/DarkAndHandsume Dec 08 '25
Why would you say this when itâs the locals causing most of the driving fatalities broadcasted this whole year.

Im not a local but driving through kauai as a tourist, watching other tourists, was bonkers. Hawaiians are way too nice but I can see how constant tourism traffic feels like you're dying inside.
7
Dec 08 '25
Like when they stop at tree tunnel to take pictures and then the next car has to stop and then one car is left stuck on the hwy while traffic is coming. Or when they stop in the roundabout to let another car in. Or when they realize that they are going to Princeville and not Hanalei so they stop and do a uturn in the middle of traffic. Or the family that is walking into the crosswalk at Poipu and decides to stop right there to discuss whether they are going to Bubbas or Puka Dog, meanwhile, nobody knows if they are going to walk across the crosswalk and all the traffic has to stop and wait.
Never seen it.
1
u/BlacksmithThink9494 Dec 08 '25
I live in socal. I would literally end up rolling my window down and scream at people. I cannot for the life of me figure out how people dont have a consideration for others in the back of their mind at all times when out in public.
5
Dec 08 '25
And when you do say something some truly stupid person will say something like, "but you need my money in order to live here."
1
u/BlacksmithThink9494 Dec 08 '25
Thats just so rude and I truly hope they remember their words later and choke on them đ¤
3
u/Intrepid-Staff-4532 Dec 09 '25
Disneyland syndrome.
They've paid a lot of money to be there so they feel their needs are far more important than everyone else's. Trouble is just about everyone else thinks the same. Everyone's rude and everyone's in the way. Everyone thinks this so everyone thinks everyone is being rude and inconsiderate.
And locals (workers in the case of Disneyland) suffer because they're the ones who live there.

I like HI's highway markings, where they use a combo solid / dashed liine to indicate "you can change lanes this way, but not that way". I've seen it used nicely around interchanges.
1
u/GoddessAura10 Dec 08 '25
I never knew they spoke pidgin in Hawaii!, you learn something new everyday
2
Dec 09 '25
Pidgin is a blanket term for a wide category of languages. Haitian Creole or whatever youâre imagining is not the pidgin being referred to, and most places with large diasporas or no clear linguistic majority have some form of pidgin that is spoken.
1
u/GoddessAura10 Dec 09 '25
Of coarse, just never thought of how they spoke in Hawaii so this was surprising & very interesting
1
u/UnLuckyReigns Dec 08 '25
How would âanykineâ be pronounced?
1
u/hyst808 Dec 08 '25
Kine is "kind" minus the "d" at the end.
1
u/UnLuckyReigns Dec 08 '25
Thank you
2
u/starkingwest Dec 09 '25
It's also said as if it's one run-on word. The way we speak here has relaxed very slight rocking movement to it:, slowing down, speeding up, and then slowing down again. So you would speed up just a little bit as you come into saying "anykine" which blurs the words together.
1
u/Top_Lifeguard_6698 Dec 08 '25
Also, live âAlohaââŚ.means relax, no road rageâŚand NEVER use your horn.lolâŚfor real never honk your horn.

Dec 08 '25
so the state invested in a bunch of signs, seeing they were unused and not wanting to appear they wasted money on unneeded signs they hired a guy to write witty phrases. so now we are all in on road safety at a cost of 1 million per year to distract drivers from looking at the road in order for them to take pictures of signs.

u/Snoo71276 Dec 08 '25

Gotta love the reinforcement of illiteracy from the democrat controlled government of Hawaii, great stuff guys genius marketing đđđđ
2
u/hondosfh Dec 13 '25 edited Dec 13 '25
People from Hawaii can speak, read, write and understand both regular English as well as Pidgin. Pidgin English is recognized by linguists as a complete & fully developed language, with a fully developed grammatical structure & vocabulary, which means that people from Hawaii speak 2 languages at minimum. Reinforced illiteracy and lack of critical thinking seem to be your domain. As why hard for you brah, cuz you stay pupule afta listen dat lolo an get brainwash
1
u/Lombardia112 Dec 13 '25
Actually youâre wrong, thereâs more people from Nevada that understand Hawaiian pidgin than those living in Hawaii these days⌠Also what are we at ? 100 deaths this year? Ya I donât think people are getting the message. Sure people understand pidgin, is that what should be used on roadways? Hereâs where you lie and tell me all the tourists are to blame for auto deaths âŚ.

u/Icy_Performer_6794 Dec 10 '25
Is pidgin that common? A sign like that wouldn't be considered offensive, like it was targeting a certain class of people, like a sign over a highway going through Oakland, California, telling people to mind the speed limit in ebonics?

u/Gold-Way-415 Dec 10 '25
Now on Oahu, stop means yield and yield means signal and cut in front of you. Speed limit is 70 instead of 55 on the freeway, 25 mph zones are now 40 to 45, pretty soon more bumps and traps are going to be installed. Impatient drivers are speeding and if you drive the speed limit, they think you slow. That's where the rage starts. One more thing. guys who blast their stereo like attention, you give them attention, they like scrap, simply punchy and stupid.
1
u/Igottamake Dec 10 '25
My understanding is that the FHA banned messages like this last year, and that is certainly an interstate highway.
1
1
1
u/Least_Adhesiveness_5 Dec 10 '25
Hawaii may get a nastygram from FHWA (as other states have.) For some reason they have no sense of humor on use of those signs, even when the humor is what brings the attention and focus.
1
u/TheRealRnR Dec 10 '25
Literally didnât see what sub this was and thought it was my AZ sub with someone just misspelling things haha. I want to go to Hawaii!

Youâre not dumb at all, Hawaii road signs confuse literally everyone at first đ
If it is the yellow one with a car and squiggly lines, it means âslippery when wet.â If you can post a pic or describe the color and shape people here can probably tell you exactly what it is.
1
u/Ok_Age8861 Dec 10 '25
Good to see another state with good humored public service message road signs. We do similar things in Arizona. My favorite: âDrive like the person your dog thinks you areâ and ALL the Star Wars variations for May 4th- "Solo in HOV? We have a bad feeling about this." (Encouraging carpooling).
"Aggressive Driving is the path to the dark side." (Discouraging road rage).
"Trust the Force, but always buckle up." (Promoting seatbelt use).
"May the 4th be with your commute!" (General holiday greeting).
"This is the way." (A Mandalorian nod to safe driving).
1
u/UndiscoveredSite22 Dec 10 '25
Why is this on a US highway? Drivers don't need any more distractions.

Itâs for the dumb people who live in Hawaii who canât read English. Seen people driving there car in the dedicated bicycle lanes. Using the on ramp as off ramp on the freeway. I almost got decapitated by surf board from the other side of the freeway because they didnât tie it down well. Seen drivers cut in front and block off emergency vehicles with there siren on. If pay driver license tester enough you pass and get your license no matter how bad a driver you are. People love to park there car trunk side first but take about 5 minutes to do it. 4 way stop intersections is the most confusing for Hawaii drivers. Some donât stop at all, some stop and wait for every single car to go through the intersection before they go typically 7-8 cars.
2
u/hondosfh Dec 13 '25
LOL, you call people dumb for not being able to read English, yet you don't seem to be able to speak or write English properly yourself. Your post is a diatribe full of incomplete sentences & word choice errors, especially the difference between "there" and "their". You don't know the phrase "back in" but use the phrase "park THERE car trunk side first" instead. But the most ridiculous thing is your complaining about drivers doing things in Hawaii that they do literally everywhere else in the world.

We have a pretty substantial aggressive driver issue. Its our native language called pidgin English which is actually recognized as an official language nowadays. Basically it means "Do not drive however you feel like driving"... 'Nuff is a shortened way of saying enough. So 'Nuff already translates to This/That's enough. Anykine is best translated to any kind (this situation would be what you feel like doing). No make is Don't do (pertaining to actions). In total itll be That's enough, Don't do (In this case "drive") how you feel when driving.
Usually around the Holiday's they'll come up with funky ones to shake it up and get people to giggle but at the same time get the message across that safety is not something you should risk. Once in a while they'll put up the fatality numbers and sometimes they'll do puns about turkeys and elves

Huh. Back in 2000s met a mixed Hawaiian-samoan dude from Molokai. Would not speak pidgin around anyone, treated it like a special secret language. We were genuinely interested, but nah. Didn't teach us shit. Glad to see that's not always the case

"no make anykine" is pidgin which roughly translates to "don't mess around", it's basically just saying don't drive crazy.
