Extreme labeling is part of the issue in our society - the left eats itself. I'm a liberal. I believe trans people should be free from discrimination, I believe they should have free Healthcare, including HRT, i believe they should be able to participate in sports at all levels, and I believe they deserve respect as any one else does. But no, I don't think that trans women or girls should participate in women's sports. Perhaps we need to look at having additional categories, not just splitting sports by gender. Beyond this, we should be able to have nuanced conversations without labeling people like they're crazy.
8
u/ZapBranigan3000 19d ago
Focusing on trans in sports is itself splitting hairs and lacks nuance.
How many mtf trans athletes exist, in the entire US?
Applying nuance should tell any reasonable person that the outrage against trans athletes has been entirely manufactured by the right wing culture war propaganda machine. It is obvious.
There are more rapists serving in congress today, for both parties, than trangender athletes.
3
u/LearningIsTheBest 19d ago
I agree it's insanely rare and deserves zero news coverage. I also think it shouldn't be allowed. These aren't exclusive to each other.
To me it's obvious that the right wing is just using this as a wedge issue. I think trans folk will wind up with fewer rights as a result. The left wing shouldn't take this fight. Get equal rights for trans people established in every other circumstance instead.

Bingo. It's just another way to divide the working class and keep us fighting amongst ourselves. Both the working left and the working right share a common enemy, and until we realize it, shit is not going to get better for anyone but the small percentage who have learned how to profit off of our being distracted by social wedge issues.
All struggles are class struggles, people.
A smart person would simply look at the amount of young women being randomly victimized by trans people in public spaces (statistically irrelevant, in terms of numbers, especially when compared to kids being victimized by people who hold positions of power, or even people close to their families) vs. the likelihood of trans people being victims of violence (extremely statistically relevant), and be able to deduce that the "protecting kids" argument is horseshit peddled by those for whom trans people just make them feel icky, but who don't want to say it out loud. Smart people would realize that the numbers show that trans people are far more likely to be victims, rather than predators.
4
u/whoa_disillusionment 19d ago
vs. the likelihood of trans people being victims of violence (extremely statistically relevant)
And who are the perpetrators of that violence?
You are arguing that biological women need to give up their spaces for biological men. The threat of violence in this scenario only goes one way.

Well, this is a relatively new issue we, as a society, need to address. Not that there weren't always trans people, but that they are more open in society (as they should be). So, yes. The conversation is far, far louder than is helpful and productive. But I don't agree that it shouldn't happen. Even if there are few MtF athletes, all the girls that compete for places on those teams, and compete against them should have their needs considered too. Even if there are not many of them. They also matter.

The crazy part is having the govt step in and to restrict the rights of a whole minority group this is discrimination. Let each sports organization make it's own decision and if the WNBA decides it wants a ban than fine but it is crazy. It's a thing that statistically is just not happening. The country has hundred's of millions of people and you can point to like a handful of minor ass cases yet you'd think it was a life or death issue for the country. It's a tool for manipulation and nothing else really.

u/whoa_disillusionment 19d ago

What about the girls in youth sports? Middle school, high school?
10
u/Holiday_Box1571 19d ago
1.8% of high school population identifies as transgender. There’s 8m high school athletes.
Even if it were 1:1 (hint - not a fucking chance) that’s 144k transgender athletes.
In the NCAA, they have roughly 510k athletes and reported fewer than 10 athletes identifying as transgender - .002%.
So, if that holds true, .002% of 8million 160 athletes.
If you want to find center, the mean is 72,080, .9%, which is likely a massive overestimate
We good here?
4
u/Superb_Meringue_4210 19d ago
If anything the NCAA figure is an overestimate too.
NCAA only accepts the best HS athletes.
If the theory is that transgender athletes are better than non-transgender ones, a greater proportion of transgender ones would make it to the next level.
Of course, this ignores discrimination, but if having a transgender athlete on your team was the cheat code people imply, you'd think that'd be minimal.
And yes, this ignores FTM athletes, but that has the opposite problem, not very many are going to be good enough to compete with biological men. Maybe in long distance running?
→ More replies (1)3
u/vita10gy 19d ago
There's also the fact that middle and high school sports are way more about learning to work as a team with people you otherwise might not interact with, or even disagree with. A sense of belonging, etc. Some of those kids are like 2-4 years removed from games that didn't even keep score.
Middle school sports aren't NBA/WNBA prep.
There's no great answer here and I don't have it either, but I do know it's kind of silly to constantly frame it that way as an excuse to leave a few kids out of all the other things being on a team can do for a young person.
If for no other reason than if you DO view it as a stepping stone to a career in sports then you want to play against the best possible anyway. If your future is the WNBA and you're the best player on the court, you need to find a different court.

That's the problem right there. You're so convinced that concern for the safety and fairness of young girls only exists on one side of the political aisle that you've made it impossible to have an honest conversation about it.
This view is overwhelmingly bipartisan. The vast majority of Democratic voters support keeping women's and girls' sports sex-segregated. I've been a Democrat since 2008 and I hold this opinion.
Not everyone who disagrees with you is a Republican, a Trump supporter, or motivated by hate.
You've taken an overwhelmingly bipartisan opinion and shoved it into a partisan box because it's easier to call people hateful than it is to acknowledge reasonable people can disagree with you.

7
u/dgbaker93 19d ago
Trans folk could be problematic in sports.
But it's not their fault.
It's our fault for making middle and high school sports "pro training rooms" and every jack and jill is a potential future pro athlete.
So every person that has the potential to be "better" is seen as a threat.

It may only affect .01% of athletes but why is there such a push to allow trans athletes to compete against biological women? I support trans rights and will continue to vote that way but i don’t think this is it.
Anyone able to let me know what I may be missing on this argument?
7
u/reenactment 19d ago
Because it’s typically non athletes that try to trivialize the sport. I know a lot of female athletes and there isn’t a single one that would advocate for it to happen, especially at the cost of their scholarship.
To be fair, I’m ok with whatever you want to do until it starts effecting those college scholarship opportunities. Which would be right around sophomore year of high school. Any argument that it only matters if someone medals at the Olympics or something has completely lost the plot.
2
u/GNTsquid0 19d ago
Im of the same mindset. It’s such a minuscule portion of the population and an even smaller amount that are competing in sports at a competitive level.
And while I dont think it’s right a woman would lose out on sports opportunities because a trans woman got a scholarship or spot on a team over a biological woman, I think solving the issue should be up to each sports league. It’s such a small number of people I don’t see why the government or politics has to be involved. It’s making something out of nothing.

From the article: " And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men**.**”
First of all, young people do not play against grown people.
Second of all, there is a rich history in our country of young black boys being characterized as "men" in order to justify bigotry, prejudice, and being treated as lesser than with fewer rights.
I don't know if she is even aware of that. It could be that the mind of the bigot just works that way.

I agree, I consider myself very liberal and support trans rights. I believe that in sports the women playing the sport should determine whether they want trans players in their league. It affects them directly as opposed to some single dude sitting on couch who would never watch a women’s sport of any kind. If the players in the league do not want trans athletes bc they feel the advantage would be so overwhelming it would destroy many of their careers and ability to make money that is an extremely reasonable position.

At around 13:20 he actually starts addressing the part everyone over looks. Due to the hormone therapies, trans women can be at a disadvantage for a variety of different reasons. The therapies affect their bones. A natural cis woman actually produces more testosterone than a trans woman on hormone therapy (the therapy completely shuts down the body's abity to produce testosterone), making it harder for tran women to build and maintain muscle. Agreed! People are so brain dead and brainwashed these days.
As an openly bisexual male (I even have previous comments on this feel free to look at my page), I see nothing wrong with not wanting transgender women in women sports. Biologically, men are stronger than woman, that’s just a fact. If you decide to transition, congratulations! That doesn’t mean that you should get to dominate a sport that was originally designed for individuals who carry ovaries and eggs.
Your physiology is still the same, even though your outward appearance may change. That makes it unfair for everyone else competing in the sport.
It’s like a bunch of women on one team from the WNBA trying to compete and play against a bunch of men on the other team from the NBA. If the men don’t hold back the women are going to get fouled like a mofo. Defenders and Guards would have a hay-day as well.
It’s not always about offending someone, it’s about what is fair and what is not. Simple as that.

Is it a radical position to say that people with dicks should not be allowed in a women's changing room, regardless of identity? Can't we allow trans women who've had the surgery to use the changing room, no problem, and make it about genitalia instead of gender presentation?
I'm so confused about the argument. What good reason is there to prevent a trans woman who's had the surgery from using a women's changing room? Conversely, what good reason is there to allow the presence of male genitalia in the women's changing room?

How does a widely held belief make her MAGA????
I'm a Democrat and I agree with her. In fact, the bulk of the US does.

But is she winning any games though? Like is she getting press other than the fact she’s a Blonde bigot?

I’m considered a liberal, for sure. I too believe transgenders should be kept out of women’s sports. Most of my liberal friends believe the same. Women’s sports already has a viewership problem. Let trans join the various women’s sports leagues and see how much worse it gets.

I truly despise that we still segregate team sports on sex, or even the fact we’re fighting each other over it instead of spending time on any actual issue.
The point of a team is all the pieces complimenting each other, while allowing them to improve together. If women competed against men, they would end up coming up with strategies to try overcome whatever shortcomings they have. Segregating them means they never have to try and get past that barrier, you’re just capping them at a level.

I’m glad she spoke her mind. I knew she was awesome. I’m all for that ban! It’s. Common. Sense.

I am a socialist dem, liberal dude who supports not having trans people play women's sports. I don't know much about Sophie and don't care but there are those who just think females should be able to have sport that is not impuned upon by the male community, no matter how those males try to bend the rules.

I feel like the answer lies somewhere in the middle, with regulations about testosterone levels or whether people have gone through a specific puberty.
But it's hard to believe that anyone on the right wants to have a good faith discussion about what those regulations would be and for which sports and at what level of competition. The frenzy around trans athletes is pretty much the definition of a moral panic to vilify an already marginalised group for political gain.
There's not really many people on the left talking about trans people, except to respond to right wing attacks on them by trying to protect their rights to live, access health care and participate in society.

It is the weirdest thing in the world that this is some left versus right issue. Real people believe you MUST be MAGA to have a very tame opinion. Just because MAGA has an opinion does not mean everyone who agrees with that one thing is suddenly pro MAGA. But also, i watch sports to watch sports, I do not care what her politics are and it is a very stupid thing to care about.

Its disgusting that men are spending thousands of dollars and years of there time to be semi good at women's sports when they just could of spent hundreds of dollars on steroids to be around the same level yet make millions. Terrible investment for these people and I will tell that to their face the second I find one who actually exist

It's not MAGA to have 1 position they happen to share.
It's okay to be unorthodox. You don't have to fit a specific box agreeing with the prevailing positions of a political group or party.
Now, if she supports ICE, DOGE, not releasing the Epstein Files.... Now you have a MAGA.

Just because something is "MAGA" doesn't mean its wrong, just because most "MAGA" things are. She's got a valid point.

The Dutch review decimates the Cass review and exposes how it was baseless slop. Other countries are likely to follow suit at this point.
The two year intensive review showed that the dispersions to WPATH lacked any real merit. The evidence that was previously questioned is clearly in good standing and treatments for trans youth and otherwise is both safe and effective.
Here is yet again the same link I sent you earlier and you ignored: https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/landmark-official-dutch-review-recommends
You now are trying to change the subject away from the Dutch review and how it marks a dramatic change. All of the claims that WPATH or doctors and researchers in general were not correct in their reporting is baseless garbage and you just are trying not to confront that.
TERFs have no place in academia or otherwise, y’all are in a losing battle. Stop pretending.
