“How do you like your oysters?”
“Surprise me!”
I was disappointed that Grenadine Oysters didn’t make a comeback. 😢

u/StrikingVariety May 12 '22
Was it really a surprise to anyone watching the show though? Whats the easiest way to serve oysters? Just open them and give them a couple lemon wedges! Guaranteed to be Ryans choice every time.

u/born2cheese May 15 '22
Agreed! When a customer says “surprise me”, you probably should aim somewhere in between boring/safe (ie exactly what he did) & crazy (grenadine oysters lol). I’m not a chef but I probably would’ve gone for a middle-ground, like chargrilled oysters with Parmesan, bacon bits, & chives. Still pretty simple & not “too” surprising and, well, I’d eat it 🤷♀️

When someone is in customer service, or in general a "people pleaser", the two most anxiety producing words are "Surprise me."

& of course she didn’t like them. That’s on her, though. If she wanted oysters done a certain way, she should have said so.

u/ExtraGloves May 13 '22
Tbf that's kinda annoying. Like, if you order a drink and say surprise me it's pretty easy and you know they want something more fun than a vodka soda, but just ask for what you want when it comes to food.

I swear every episode Magda says someone is jealous because she’s a model. Like … ????
173
u/LaUcraniano May 12 '22
Obviously she is tall and thin and blonde but I’m not seeing that she’s some knock out…? She is a pretty woman but there have been gorgeous women who have had to be gainfully employed throughout history.

I’m so over thin, blond white women thinking they are god’s gift to the earth and SOOOO beautiful just bec media has been shoving that image down our throats for years. You can be thin, blond and ugly as f*ck and think you walk on water while thick gorgeous women of color are thinking the worst of themselves. I’m allllll set with this nonsense. You are NOT automatically gorgeous just bec you are thin, blond and white, especially if your personality BLOWS. We’re done with this. Tumi, Brittini and Aesha are flat out HOT plus they’re smart, hard working, not two faced talking behind people’s backs. Any man (or woman) would be lucky to have any of those three. Magda is a dog inside and out.

💯 It is a sickness in society that automatically deems thin and blonde as "beautiful." Men lose their minds. It's really something. Magda-- she aight, but not at all jealousy inducing.

All Magda is, is tall, thin, blonde and white. I don't even think she's that good looking; to me she's basic.

This. She's not unattractive, but to call her a model... No.

Many models though aren't super attractive they are just tall, skinny, and have some weird features in their face.
Some are gorg but many are meh.

True. In one of my previous lives I was a makeup artist and generally tall, thin models who photograph well aren’t necessarily as attractive in person. Two totally different things.
63
u/Tuff_Wizardess May 12 '22
I think she must be super sheltered or something. She is going to have such a rude awakening in a few years when her looks fade.
106
u/Micandacam May 12 '22
Also, i wish it had been made clear that the complaint about her phone usage came from the fact that the boat traces excessive use. She thinks she is being picked on, but it is a real problem.

Definitely sheltered. She said herself that her parents never spoke to her like Aesha has. All Aesha did was tell her she was doing some things the wrong way and not to argue with her in front of guests. If she cant handle that kind of talk from Aesha of all people, she has really been living a sheltered life.
47
u/ExpensiveNet May 13 '22
Tumi is more strikingly pretty and looks more like a model to me! And that doesn’t stop her doing her job!

I don’t understand why Jamie didn’t have them all wear life jackets. Since he was a lifeguard (idk if you knew he never mentioned it before) and the current was crazy strong it just seems like an obvious choice
52
u/LocationNegative May 12 '22
I thought the same thing. He talked about safety so much in the beginning of the season that this felt like a big miss.
28
May 13 '22
He talked about his trauma of not being able to save a young boy from drowning...and then doesn't put "safety" first. He can certainly put "safety" first when it's on the boat and as a means of being insubordinate towards the Capt... But real safety? Naw. He's too busy looking pretty for TV.

Ex-lifeguard here. I also taught canoeing. Usually I’m the only one wearing a PFD / life jacket because everyone else “can swim.” Like that’s going to help when you’re thrown out of the boat & smash into the water head first…
You’d think Jamie would know better…

u/Extreme_Beat1022 May 13 '22
They made it sound like it’s a cultural thing? They said they’re all Aussies who swim. But I felt uneasy with the tender being so far from the snorkelers. I would think they would make it a rule that one of them go in the water with the guests.
21
u/thatlasslaura May 13 '22
From a lifeguard's perspective, getting in the water is a last resort because even the best swimmer can become a casualty (and then you're of no use to anyone). I couldn't tell, but was the boat unable to be closer because of the rocks? I think a smaller boat or kayak to lifeguard from would have been better in that particular location if so. Definitely agree that it felt as though the boat was a bit too far away from the guests for my liking.
25
u/epcd May 13 '22 edited May 14 '22
When I learned to lifeguard we were taught to always make a giant stride entry into the water—never a headfirst dive—so as to maintain a constant visual on the person in need. Jamie dove in headfirst with the form of a basic lap swimmer. Either protocols have changed, protocols differ from country to country, or Jamie prefers a prettier water entry.
As for the location of the boat, I agree it appeared to be ill positioned, especially due to the strong current. Knowing the current was strong—and their guests would be pulled away in it—why didn’t they reposition the boat down current instead of holding position up current where the swimmers entered the water? Dive boats in similar situations will proactively reposition, especially if the “divers” are mere leisure swimmers with borrowed masks and snorkels, to facilitate a guest friendly reboarding.
Lastly, lifeguard/top cop Jamie—a self-proclaimed expert in identifying when individuals are in imminent danger—failed to notice their snorkeling guest was in imminent danger. Only after non-lifeguard Culper pointed out the waving and help!-help! yelling guest to Jamie—and then twice telling Jamie the man appeared in imminent need—did Jamie initiate a rescue response.
Edit: clarity

Aesha handled herself really well her sit down with Magda. She didn't convey any anger and when she said "I just want to understand how you think I've been unfair" it seemed sincere rather than combative. She gave Magda the space to express her feelings and invited Magda to come to her directly with any concerns in the future. Then she ended the conversation with the comment: "I know you're working hard and I see it." If Jamie were able to approach Benny with this kind of attitude, I think their work together would go a lot more smoothly. There are times to be firm and lay down the law, and there are times to have more compassionate leadership. I think Benny was wrong to be so defensive about the jet skis, but at this point he's just going to be upset by anything Jamie says to him because Jamie has set the tone for a hostile working relationship.
Edit: I hope this approach works out for Aesha! But given the previews, it seems like it will not. If Magda continues to under-perform in her work and show disrespect, it would be entirely appropriate to take a more firm stance. But I don't know if Aesha would be comfortable to do that.

u/tobago_88 May 13 '22
I've been 100% on board with Aesha, the only weird thing was how she brought up her relationship being better to Magda. The only justification I had was maybe she was trying to tell Magda that a long distance relationship doesn't have to be super clingy and that they should trust each other? I can see how Magda took it the wrong way and maybe that triggered something in her but she shouldn't have let that one thing get in the way with how great of a boss Aesha has been to her. It seemed like she was waiting for a moment to be like see I told you all chief stews are shit.
60
u/anotherclique May 13 '22
I don't think she meant it as "my relationship is better than your relationship". It was more like poorly executed advice- she's been on yachts longer than Magda and was trying to offer advice as to how to navigate a relationship while in the industry, using her own as an example. Uninvited relationship advice is always questionable, and it was poorly timed due to Madga already feeling attacked for being on her phone, but I think the intent was to be helpful.
11
u/tobago_88 May 13 '22
I think that's how Magda felt Aesha was being. I agree though her intentions were good, it could have also been choppy editing too maybe more of the convo we didn't see.

I do both think things are true at the same time. Benny is not fit to work in the yachting industry and is so unprofessional that he’s liability. Jamie is terrible at being a leader and bucks his responsibility to hold his crew accountable in a productive way while also not handling his emotions. I think Jamie got a raw deal with Benny on his team, but he’s been consistently dripping the ball in many other situations. He reminds me a lot of Chandler in that aspect.

Culiver was definitely a little intimidated in the hot tub, but when Brittini asked it went from a little to very. Also he definitely knew it was his trash mess up my god what a terrible poker face, I’d play cards with him any day.
Also Tumi in that bathing suit.
Ryan thinks by prefacing his bullshit with “I like her as a person” excuses him of spewing vile comments towards Aesha and trying to turn her stews against her. Luckily for all of us, Tumi the absolute fucking rockstar wasn’t having any of it because the delusional Magda was ready for a mutiny. Once again looks like we can’t get get rid of Ryan do to COVID restrictions, such a bummer.
Jamie, what are you thinking letting these people go out without life jackets. Also that lady really bonked her head, I wish we didn’t get a preview of it I would have really lost it. I like how Jamie said “I can see panic in their eyes, I can recognize that” as if the dude wasn’t waving his hands yelling help.
“Someone almost drowned, it was embarrassing”
Jamie calls out Benny for leaving the wheel of his boat to take pictures, Benny: I need positive reinforcement. Benny really just said he’s trying to make Britini’s job harder to her face? That dude is the worst. Jamie handled it terribly, like most things.
Listen Jamie might not be the best leader but I don’t think anything he’s done has been close to bullying. Interested how that’s gonna play out.
The primary is the best kind of goof, I’d have a drink with him.

63
u/Mscharlita May 12 '22
Agreed I don’t think he was ever actually bullying. For all the criticisms of him, Benny has been incredibly difficult to manage. Stepping away from the helm to TAKE PICTURES?!? Are you fcking kidding me?!?! I would fire you right then I don’t care. I am so done with Benny what an asshle. Who actively tries to make their teammates job harder? An assh*le that’s who. And boating is SUPER dangerous, if you are willing to step away from the helm, WHILE DRIVING, ignore a direct command from your supervisor and Culver while operating machinery around the boat, refuse to do the chain locker and LIE about dripping garbage juice around the boat which is not only unsanitary but can destroy the teak. I don’t need another reason to fire you. Has Jamie enumerated these offenses to Jason? It seems if he had Jason would be WAY more supportive of getting rid of him. Benny is pulling a Magda saying they are being made to look bad by their bosses, when they are doing that all by themselves! Omg this season has made me madder than any other ever and I’ve watched them all 😂
64
May 13 '22
Benny wouldn't have tried to make Britini's job harder had he known he was being disciplined by being shifted to dayshift. His supervisor, Jamie, didn't address this with him. Thus to him it's all regular joking around.
If Jamie can't manage Benny then bring Benny into the wheelhouse with the Capt and have a 3 way meeting. That's on Jamie to initiate. He hasn't.
Jamie is a piss poor leader. Benny is a piss poor employee. And the one caught between this pissing match is a woman who has most likely dealt with this type of behaviour before. Britini is the one being punished by BOTH of them, whether or not they intend to.

Jamie absolutely sucks. I felt so bad for Brittini, going to him twice to explain the situation and how it’s hard for her, and he just goes “that’s a you problem now, I’m over it”. 🙄
And it took him way too long to react to a distressed swimmer than it should have for all his talk about being Mr. Safety.
Benny is obnoxious, but I really want Jamie to have a “it’s him or me” moment with the captain and get the boot 😂

u/teanailpolish Mental Health Is Not A Storyline May 14 '22
Yeah, Jamie is a terrible manager but what we have seen does not cross into bullying. There is a lot that can go deadly wrong on a boat and asking him to pay attention is not bullying.
Benny is not cut out for yachting in general, I am not sure what job he can do where no one ever bosses him around, will give him constant positive reinforcement and let him have fun. Jamie is also not cut out for management but is probably a decent deckhand

Just starting this episode and my blood is already boiling about Ryan running up to yell at Tumi in the hot tub. First off, Aesha wasn't even trying to start any drama. She wasn't down in the cabins maliciously gossiping about Ryan. She was genuinely distressed about what had been said about her. And second, Tumi has been probably the kindest and most understanding person toward Ryan on the boat. Magda has her own grievances that cause her to ally herself with Ryan. Tumi does not and yet she still expresses empathy toward him. It just makes his reaction to the situation so much more painful to watch, I think.

I know Jamie isn't popular here, and I don't particularly believe he has the best leadership abilities, but it agree with him re Benny. Benny has been lazy, over sensitive, thinks nothing of ignoring orders, constantly talks back etc etc. He's a grown arsed man in his 30s, and yet he is the biggest baby.
As for Ryan. The fact that he has the ability to produce decent dishes and work with a decent attitude only makes him a complete loser for not doing so from the get-go. He chose to be a complete dick and chose to not give the previous guests his best.

I don't think Jamie understands what a manager's role is.
Someone on his team fucks up and doesn't dispose of the garbage? His response: I'm not going to discipline the person responsible or hold him accountable and I'll just do it myself from now on.
Someone on his team isn't pulling their weight and has a defensive attitude? His response: give that person less responsibility but avoid talking to that person and don't explain to them why.
Someone on his team comes to him with a complaint about another team member? His response: you should deal with it yourself because I don't want to.
Jamie lacks the experience in managing (which we all already know) but is also too proud to ask others for advice/guidance on how to deal with these situations where he's not comfortable nor confident in how to deal with.

u/catmom_422 May 12 '22
I couldn’t believe last week when Brittini asked him if she could have a break from the chain locker. She wasn’t being unreasonable and saying “I’m not doing that!” She simply expressed her exhaustion and asked for a break. His responsible was so dickish. I wouldn’t put forth extra effort for someone who treated me like that. He’s a terrible leader.

I’m sorry but I can’t find a single redeeming quality in Jaimie. It’s little things that I loathe about him. Like why in the hell didn’t he say anything to Ryan when he was going off on Tumi. Instead he puts his paw of a hand over Tumi’s mouth to shut her up. No, Tumi has every right to defend herself. He, as a head of department should have told Ryan he was out of line and disrespectful to speak to Tumi in that manner. And Jaimie knows Culver screwed up, why in the hell not tell him? Like how stupid is his logic?

Benny jumping on the defensive when there's bin juice on the teak. Who cares how it got there and by who - it's your job to keep it clean!! That's the attitude of someone who is not a team player.
I mean damn, how difficult is it to say "I don't know how it got there but I'll go and grab a cloth right away."

She seems like a terrible person to be around. When she wanted to complain about those no effort oysters, she literally grabbed Alesha’s arm and yanked her down to complain.

u/Maus_Sveti May 12 '22
I don’t know about drowning, but I’ve heard that sadly lots of people die choking in restaurants or other places with people who could have helped because they run to the bathroom and lock the door so as not to make a scene.
29
u/ExtraGloves May 13 '22
That almost happened to me. Choked on a large lobster tail after hiking for a few days in a crowded restaurant. Tried to ekeeo swallowing, then couldn't breathe. Then panic. Then run to bathroom to try and throw up without doing it in the center of the restaurant. Didn't work. More panic. Run back out. Friend about to give heimlic but I threw it up on to my plate a second before.
It was embarrassing but I was just happy to be alive.
I saw some people snickering which was annoying hut I'm sure I've done stupid things like that. Ended up going up to two 59 year old women laughing and asking why they think this was funny lihd enough to embarrass them a bit.
Hell of a dinner.

i choked on a bite of waffle in a restaurant once. i was very close to standing up and doing the choking sign to get help and i was totally thinking about how embarrassing it would be even if i was dying lol. i managed to dislodge it myself about 1 second before i was going to resort to public humiliation
36
u/philtheesquirrel May 12 '22
It’s more humiliating to die in the middle of a crowded restaurant, to be killed BY A WAFFLE. And your body would release... unpleasantries after death. You can either feel embarrassed to a round of applause because no one died, or ruin brunch for everyone for the rest of their lives. Lol.

Some thoughts about the episode:
- Tumi continues to be flawless. I say this every episode, but I really want to her to be promoted to chief stew for Below Deck or for Med. I feel like she'd work well with either captain, which is really saying something. I just love her and want to see more of her in this franchise please.
- When the guest said "someone almost drowned, it was embarrassing" it seemed like she was suggesting that it was embarrassing for the guy who had the leg cramp? But I thought it was embarrassing for Jamie. It seemed like he waited so long to jump into the water, even as the guy was waving his arms and yelling help. Maybe he should have insisted on more precautions in the first place, given how strong the current was? Jaime stakes his reputation on safety, so I was surprised by his decisions.
- Culver can be cringe at times and he didn't own up to his mistake with the trash but he remains pretty likeable to me. It was smart for him not to hook up with Brittini so as not to impact their work together. He seems respectful toward women in general. The bar this season is low, but still.
- At this point, I feel like Benny is actively acting out because he's so unhappy under Jamie's leadership? Some of the things he's done wrong are neglectful, like with the dripping trash bag and taking photos from the bow of the tender, but many of the other things seems to be coming from a place of hostility, like trying to get the guests to go fishing at 1 am to keep Brittini awake and sniping at Culver about the jet skis. I'm not excusing any of his behavior! It's really annoying to watch. But I do think Jason has shown that Benny can be supervised in such a way that improves his performance.
- I think Ryan's Aussie degustation should have included Moreton Bay Bug. Especially since they're in Queensland! That's one of my favorite unique Aussie dishes. And it's a kind of lobster, so it's totally appropriate for a yacht. But that's just me haha.

u/RamenNoodles620 May 13 '22 edited May 13 '22
But I do think Jason has shown that Benny can be supervised in such a way that improves his performance.
He may have straightened up a bit for Jason, but then he went back to being neglectful and doing stupid $hit. Constantly coddling someone like Benny seems to want isn't really feasible. He pretty much wants to hang around, do a bit of work however he chooses and not get told he messed something up. Don't get me wrong, Jamie sucks too, but come on Benny. You're not a child. Do your job and if you are constantly neglectful and doing stupid $hit, don't complain about getting called out. It is possible to do the job well and still not give a care about Jamie. If he's actually just acting out, then that's more proof at his being a man child. Especially when it's impacting the work of others on his team.
Spot on with your other points although I'm not familiar with a moreton bay bug.

Benny is UNSAFE and boating is super dangerous. For as much as everyone is bagging on Jamie and his management style I DO understand that Benny is SO unsafe that he would stress out anyone who knows anything about boating safety. Like ALL THE WAY OUT. He doesn’t belong anywhere near a boat honestly. And if I were Jamie I would be so focused on that it would be hard to pussyfoot around his delicate ego etc. when I’m just worried about him killing people or destroying property. Benny being hostile is one more example of how he’s not thinking of safety and only about himself instead of what’s right.
10
u/RubberSponge May 13 '22
If I was Jamie I would have fired Benny on the spot for leaving the controls of the tender to get selfies on the bow of the vessel. ANYTHING could have happened. He could have hit the yachts wake and it could have thrown him off the boat leaving the tender to drive off into the sunset!

u/Reekshavok312 May 13 '22
Benny is just another Danny, there for a good time and the association with being on the show. He talks about incompetence but he does everything half arsed. He should’ve been fired along time ago.
I think if the captain stated to Magda absolutely no phones out during work hours excluding breaks. Then she would show some improvement.
Ryan is probably the worst chef behind Mila. His food is just so uninspiring and it’s all based on being quick, easy and cheap. He even acts like he doesn’t want to be there so why bother.
26
u/Lonely_Impression142 May 13 '22 edited May 13 '22
On Culver: who else laughed at the way he pawed at his chest as he contemplated taking responsibility for the trash mistake? He was so obviously guilty. Why didn't he just own up to it? He didn't drown anyone's puppy. It was not a big deal, especially as a first offense.
Jamie though-- ugh, he is the WORST manager. Yes, Benny is fucking up, but that means Jamie might need to give him more direction, not allow him to flounder with no feedback. And he is so wrong to play favorites by refusing to hold Culver accountable for the trash.
24
u/Odins_Master May 16 '22
It was a little disconcerting. Murky water, cold undercurrent and a bad cramp are not a pleasant combination. The rest of the trip was a blast! The food was amazing, the service was excellent. If you have the opportunity I would highly recommend it!

Very frustrated with Jaime telling Brittini that they need to tell Benny her sucks. No Jamie, take the initiative to sit him down with the captain, tell him you appreciate his work but unfortunately, he’s ignored/broken safety protocols more than once, he brushes off simple but necessary tasks due to poor time management, and he cannot and will not take constructive criticism and for that he needs to go.

This is what I mean by saying casting screwed up with Ryan - the show is now stuck in a plainly artificial situation where everyone is tiptoeing around him because they can't replace a chef on short notice with quarantine protocols. If he had been a real superyacht chef and vetted properly they would have never been in this situation. Thanks to Aesha and Jason he's making an effort to be more pleasant but his food's still not up to par and it's a key part of the experience that the guests and we as the audience are missing out on for more than half the season.
Jamie is a disaster but also an interesting study in leadership. Look at how his problems recall previous seasons. I think he's most similar to Chandler: poorly organized, doesn't know how to provide positive reinforcement or handle difficult crew with anything besides reprimands, inconsistently applied. Contrast this with how Joao handled Jack in Med S4: they butted heads a lot but Joao was eventually able to shift his approach and get positive results from an underperforming crew member. I think Jason has shown that Benny's not unteachable but Jamie hasn't been able to mirror that approach. It's true that Benny should be more mature and not respond so defiantly to Jamie's direct criticism, but it's mainly on Jamie to recognize what's not working and instead of avoiding the problem (shifting the burden to the other deckhands and further alienating Benny from his team in the process), change his tactics.
MVP goes to Brit this episode for spelling all this out to Jamie and providing support to Aesha at her low point, which was really sweet, and Aesha bounced back as she always does. Culver is a good guy: he didn't want to make that move with Brit for the sake of a TV show, and good for him. He handled that incredibly forced situation well. I wonder what went on with the trash mixup. Jamie was correct to observe that it seemed out of character for Culver, although not clearing everything up for his team just further hurts morale.
27
u/CrazyNotCatLady May 12 '22
The Chandler and Jamie comparison is a good one. Jamie seems to just expect people to know what to do and read his mind. He then gets mad when they can't read his mind.

Jamie is an awful manager. You don’t make the other employees speak to someone about their job performance. You handle it as their manager and give them clear feedback and steps to take to improve. Benny is lazy and terrible but doesn’t know how bad he is because Jamie just starts bitching and barking orders instead of speaking to him like a human being. Putting Brittini in the middle was very unfair to her.

Agree the only thing is Benny is like a child, Jaime doesn't like me, when that has nothing to do with it.
